INTRODUCTION The Magma mine, located at Superior, AZ, some 100 km (60 miles) east of Phoenix, was discovered in 1875, and was originally mined for silver. The property was acquired by W. B. Thompson who formed the Magma Copper Co. in 1910. Prior to 1965, square-set mining and cut-and-fill methods were used to mine steeply dipping veins at Magma. Ore was moved to the chute by gravity in the square-set stopes and by slusher in the cut-and-fill stopes. The stopes were gobbed with waste from the surface and development headings in the mine. The original square-set method of mining was modi¬fied in order to extract replacement ore bodies in limestones that dipped at 0.52 rad (30°) and varied in thick¬ness from 4.6 to 38 m (15 to 125 ft). Mining of these ore bodies was done by starting at the upper lateral ex¬tremities and retreating to the access openings. The timber square sets and cribbing were used as temporary support, the ground being allowed to cave as the mining retreated. It was found, however, that mining in such a manner was very inefficient; safety hazards increased be¬cause of the blocky and fractured characteristics of the ore and the weakness of the hanging wall. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining is now the primary stoping method used at Magma, and no pillars are left for later extraction. Four ore bodies are pres¬ently being mined. These ore bodies (see Fig. 1) dip conformably at 0.52 rad (30°) to the east with the host limestone and shale sediments, their average strike length is about 122 m (400 ft), and their thickness varies from 9 to 38 m (30 to 125 ft). The ore bodies are separated by varying thicknesses of barren rock. Three of them come together at various elevations primarily in the area of the main feeder fault, but there is an apparent horizontal displacement of about 23 m (75 ft) on the main feeder fault which complicates stope layout. The method as originally applied has been modified in order to mine more efficiently ore bodies that are 9 m (30 ft) or more in thickness. The modification was made to mine all the ore at a given elevation before dropping down for the cut below. The advantage of this is that mining is done on a horizontal plane and there¬fore muck removal can be mechanized. Also multiple faces are made available, thereby improving overall min¬ing efficiency. Another major change made was to carry a 6.7-m (22-ft) face when mining the top sill and a 6.4-m (21-ft) face when mining under fill rather than the former standard 3.35-m (11-ft) high face. This change lengthens the mining cycle and cuts mat prepa¬ration costs in half. Stopes are laid out (see Fig. 2) so that maximum mining panels are available and yet one stope crew will not tie up too much of the ore reserve. One stope might consist of as many as 20 panels, and these panels are divided evenly on opposite sides of the extraction cross¬cut. The stope layout is planned so that the maximum tramming distance to the orepass will not exceed 30.5 m (100 ft) on the crosscut and 38 m (125 ft) in the panel. Rock suitable for crushed-stone aggregate is almost entirely restricted to the Highlands region of Arkansas, mostly from Paleozoic sedimentary units, but also from a few Cretaceous igneous plutons. Reserves in the state are sufficient for local needs, and Arkansas is geographically well situated for export markets to the south, where resources for crushed-stone aggregate are lacking. A study of 423 quarries, test pits, and exploration sites in Arkansas has been completed to evaluate the relative quality of bedrock units for producing crushed aggregate. Of these, 274 sites have records of engineering tests for stone evaluation done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and/or the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Of the 1,775 sample records from these sites, the most commonly reported parameters are the LA abrasion test and the Na-sulfate soundness test. Many records also have absorption and specific-gravity data, and, for some, petrographic information helps identify the potential for alkali-silica reactivity in portland-cement concrete. By determining the bedrock sources of the tested samples, comparison is made between the various geologic mapping units as to their relative quality for crushed stone.

"The flow field in a rotary kiln, used in an iron ore pelletizing process, was investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model. The model is isothermal, downscaled and simplified. The objective was to examine the possibility of capturing the unsteady motion of the flame seen in the real kiln. The results from the simulations were compared with recorded images of the real process. The results demonstrate the possibility of quickly getting an overview of the flow field in the kiln. The main, unsteady behavior of the flame was captured. The model may be used as a tool in the ongoing work of improving and optimizing the pelletizing process.IntroductionThe pelletizing process, in which the crude iron ore from a mine is upgraded into pellets, is a process involving large amounts of hot air flowing in complex geometries. Flow control is a crucial factor in this process to maintain high pellet quality. The rotary kiln is one of the last steps in the pelletizing process, and this is where the pellets are sintered to increase their strength and metallurgical properties. The kiln burner produces a flame that supplies the entire pelletizing process with the necessary heat.Kiln burner flames are large diffusion flames arising from a jet of fuel from the burner issuing into a concentric confining cylinder with a surrounding coflow of air, called secondary air. To enable combustion, the secondary air needs to be entrained into the fuel jet. This mixing of the fuel and air is the slowest step in the combustion process and therefore affects the efficiency of the combustion. The rate of entrainment depends on the momentum ratio between the burner jet and secondary air. The higher the momentum ratio, the faster the entrainment rate and, consequently, the faster is the fuel/air mixing.The kiln of interest in this study differs from kilns used in other industrial processes in both geometry and operating conditions. A distinguishing feature is the large amount of secondary air being induced through the kiln hood and then transported to earlier stages in the process as air or exhaust gas. The secondary air therefore has a substantial momentum, implying that the resulting flow field has a significant impact on the mixing and combustion process in general and the flame shape and stability as well as combustion efficiency in particular. A systematic study of the factors influencing the dynamics of the flow field in the kiln, neglecting the combustion, is therefore justified."

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS (1994 Agreement), but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing (RAND) that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property (IP) derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

This first section of case histories of mineral discoveries, Vol. 3, covers some of the milestones in porphyry copper and skam exploration successes. It was during the era of these discoveries that large, complex exploration departments emerged as permanent adjuncts of large mining companies. The discoveries helped shape how and where exploration activity was conducted. Probably the most important factor in exploration success is management. Few management people are mentioned in this section or in any exploration history, yet the distinction between success and failure ultimately rested with the decisions they made. One of the most successful groups was initiated by Roger Straus and Herbert Brownell when they sought to make Asarco into an important metal producer. Relying on Clem Pollock and L.H. (Bill) Hart to identify and push worthwhile projects, the Asarco management remade the company. Asarco will benefit from exploration successes com- pounded by that team for years to come. Duval is an example of a management that decided to add metal production to its industrial minerals output. When Page Morris was president, that company opened three major porphyry copper mines and became an important factor in metals. Under the Monis management team, Duval became a leader in exploration. At the other end of the scale are managements that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and by so doing changed the character of their companies in other ways.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. Feed-forward control (i.e. the forward flow of information in a control system ) is a simple and flexible approach to over-all control of a ball mill-rake classifier grinding circuit. The system described here uses mill power, feed rate, mill dilution water flow rate, and classifier dilution water flow rate only, to control mill load, throughput, mill solids, and classifier solids as well as classifier overflow grind. The mill load is controlled by a simple feed-back control loop, while mill solids and overflow grind are controlled within close limits by a unique non-linear feed-forward water control system. In effect the control follows a limited mathematical model of the grinding circuit. The configuration minimizes deviations in overflow grind due to changing ore conditions, but since it is open-loop, and the model is not complete, it is affected by changes in total ball charge and liner wear. These effects are fortunately gradual, and changes in the grind can usually be kept to within ± 1% of a target continuously for several days without adjustment. Control adjustments are made with feed-back from laboratory composites. This control system has won enthusiastic operator acceptance; it is easily started up and shut down; grind-outs have been eliminated along with flotation machine flooding and mill spills. Standard measurements and components are used throughout providing a trouble-free system design at a moderate cost.

The construction, operation and control of the vertical furnace and system components are discussed. Advantages include high efficiency, fuel economy, minimal mechanical apparatus and maintenance, atmospheric and temperature control, ease of operation and reliability.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced fonn of computer graphics where the images are generated based upon where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC-based) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR offers the capability of providing a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. VR has been effectively used by the military for training tank commanders and by hospitals for training surgeons. However, these applications have been limited to small numbers of highly skilled participants. The purpose of this paper is to examine VR's potential for enhancing the hazard awareness of larger numbers of individuals in a broad-based approach to mine safety training, such as new-miner, annual-refresher, and independent-contractor training.

The Picher Mining District, located principally in north-eastern Oklahoma, was one of the world's largest lead-zinc mining areas during its 55 year life. The field covers an area of approximately 72 square miles (186 km.-); an estimated 1.6 x [103 yds3 of material (1.22 x 103m3)] worth in excess of one billion dollars, has been mined. Mining activities were typified by surface exploratory drilling identifying ore distribution and extension of underground workings to the lead and zinc deposits outlined. Exploration holes were either left unplugged or plugged at the surface with a section of a telephone pole. Low grade ore and waste rock were discarded in mined out portions of drifts. These waste piles containing pyrite and marquisette were left underground and oxidized during the many years of active mining. Upon cessation of mining activities in the mid-1960's, the drifts and shafts of the abandoned workings began to flood as the cone of depression filled in, leading to the dissolution of the oxidized sulfides and the formation of large volumes of acid mine water in the mined out openings. The resulting poor quality water, with high concentrations of cadmium, iron, lead and zinc, began discharging at the surface in 1979. Contamination of the underlying aquifer supplying local residents was first detected on a localized scale in 1980. The present surface water and ground water contamination have lead to the area being classified as one of the top ten hazardous waste sites in the U.S. by the EPA under the superfund program.

Exports of crude gypsum from Mexico currently comprise about 60% of all domestic shipments, and about 25% of the imported material consumed in the U.S. wallboard industry. However, of growing importance are the domestic markets for calcined gypsum in Mexico including building plasters and wallboard, which account for 55% of the internal demand for natural mined material. This paper will examine the current trends in the production and trade of natural mined gypsum in Mexico and North America and the opportunities and threats that are facing existing and new suppliers in this changing market.

This paper summarizes the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a longwall installation roadway (faceroad) design methodology that could be utilized by suitably qualified colliery personnel. This goal was achieved in 2012 and the design methodology (and software package) is referred to as Analysis and Design of Faceroad Roof Support (ADFRS). The intended benefits to underground operations, in the provision of this information and resource, are a safer and more productive workplace.

Low-flow reactive-transport processes in Wightman Fork downstream of the Summitville Mine, south-central Colorado were simulated using the OTIS and OTEQ solute-transport models. The simulation was calibrated using data from a synoptic study conducted during October, 1998. Discharge over the 8-km reach from just below the mine site to the Alamosa River confluence ranged from 0.077 to 0.17 m3/s; travel time was 10.7 hours; pH ranged from 4.6 to 5.7. Simulations revealed that mass balance for SO4 was maintained, and that pH, Fe, and Al were non-conservative. Simulations allowing hydrous ferric and aluminum oxide or hydroxysulfate precipitation matched observed water quality conditions more closely than simulations without precipitation.

Northwest Boring, Inc. (NWB) deployed a skinned up AVN 2000AB Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) to install 7.5-foot long, 118-inch outer diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) sections along an alignment between the Fremont (FRS) jacking shaft and the 3rd Avenue (3RS) receiving shaft for the Ship Canal Water Quality SCWQ Project. The alignment includes: a 67-foot long straight section, a 367-foot long curved section excavated along a 650-foot radius curve, followed by a 182-foot long straight section. This paper describes the project including planning and design, manufacturing, equipment installation in the 90-foot-deep FRS jacking shaft, egress through the secants and microtunnel operations required to complete the shaft and install the required casing pipes.

Most of the coal presently used by the utility industry is cleaned at preparation plants employing wet processes. While water is the mainstay of coal washing, it is one of the least desirable components in the final product causing a reduction of the heating value as well as handling difficulties. Currently available dewatering techniques are inefficient for dewatering very fine coal (minus 325 mesh). The US coal industry has expressed serious concern about utilizing advanced cleaning processes such as column flotation because an efficient and economical dewatering process is not available.

Preliminary geophysical surveys for nickel deposits are usually carried out by airborne magnetometer and surface electrical methods. Once an anomaly is discovered by these techniques, one must resort to chemistry to identify nickel and determine its concentration. Consequently, a method to determine nickel quickly and quantitatively at the exploration site could help guide detailed sampling and provide analytical data that might otherwise be delayed at distant laboratories. In addition, borehole probes capable of indicating nickel in the rock adjacent to the hole, should prove attractive to the exploration geologist. With these needs in mind, preliminary investigations have been made to demonstrate an in situ analytical technique which appears feasible for nickel exploration. The method depends on the very high energy gamma rays emitted when nickel absorbs a thermal or low energy neutron. These neutron capture gamma rays should be distinguished from the lower energy gamma rays emitted during decay of radioactive nuclides as in conventional activation analysis.

The energy structure and consumption ratio in China determine the practical demand for the collaborative mining of coal and co-associated resources. The multi-layer mining of coal, uranium, coalbed methane, and oil and gas co-associated resources, represented by the Ordos Basin, Junggar Basin, and Tarim Basin, faces numerous challenges. Additionally, coal has been found to coexist with various mineral resources in 33 coal-bearing basins worldwide. The scientific issues related to the multi-layer development of coal related co-associated resources urgently need to be addressed. This paper discusses the unique challenges and potential solutions in the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources. The challenges include large extraction space, high mining intensity, intense overburden movement, rapid surface subsidence, and severe overburden damage due to repeated mining disturbances. Proposed solutions include the establishment of a correlation mechanism between multi-layer mining and the carrying capacity of the overburden environment, analysis of the impact characteristics of multiple field couplings, and exploration of their superposition evolution laws. The paper also proposes the development of a comprehensive evaluation and prediction system for overburden environmental capacity loss, a global sensitivity analysis model for overburden environmental capacity, and an intelligent identification and early warning system based on multi-source information fusion. These solutions aim to achieve scientific and precise mining with minimal overburden environmental capacity loss. And the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources is a complex task that requires a multidisciplinary approach and innovative solutions, and further research is needed to validate these strategies and explore new methods and technologies for efficient and sustainable extraction.

"The Bankei-Kitanosawa tunnel that is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan includes a 450m long section near the arrival point where mudstone which can liquate out natural hazardous materials such as arsenic and selenium exceeding the tolerance stipulated by country as well as weathered mudstone and unconsolidated sedimentary rocks with small overburden and the competence factor less than 1.0 are present. The mucks containing hazardous materials were disposed into the waterproof branch tunnels created from the inside of the main tunnel. The full face early ring closure method was employed to ensure the stability of the tunnel in the low strength rock masses having no stand-up time. As a result, the waterproof tunnels branching off the main tunnel can manage water tightness so as to ensure safety and relief against environmental risks of the hazardous materials. It is also demonstrated that the full face early ring closure method enable construction of the tunnel with a small overburden in the low strength rock masses. In order to overcome the restrictions, the hazardous materials were designed to be disposed into large cross section waterproof tunnels which were newly designed and constructed in high strength and hazardous material free Andesite. The lining for the tunnels was composed of with shotcrete. In addition, full face early ring closure (Sato et al., 2013) was employed to stabilize the tunnel so as to enable safe tunnel excavation in low strength rock masses where a ground arch is deemed unachievable. This paper presents the safe disposal method of mucks which are likely to liquate out natural hazardous materials as well as the full face early ring closure method and its mechanical characteristics."
