As a supplement to an analysis involving methodologies for the estimation of airflow resistance in shafts used for both ventilation and hoisting, a detailed shaft characterization survey was distributed worldwide. The survey provided detailed information which enabled verification of recommended velocities and established limitations on fill factors and relative velocities. This paper evaluates the information obtained for 37 shafts and presents a statistical evaluation of the results. Apart from airflow rates, conveyance rates, and physical characteristics, qualitative information regarding means of conveyance stability and velocity control techniques at unloading and loading points are also presented. Calculations of fill coefficient, free area velocity, and most importantly, relative velocity between the airflow and hoist, are conducted. These results are presented by frequency diagrams which illustrate the trends, as well as provide limitations for these parameters. The data illustrates that, commonly, the fill coefficient for two or more conveyances, does not exceed 30 %. A limit of 50% is suggested for a single conveyance shaft. A recommended free area velocity of 10 m/s (1,970 ft/min) for combined ventilation and hoisting shafts, is sup- ported by these results. Relative velocities of 30 m/s (5,905 ft/min) are most frequent and 50 m/s (9,840 ft/min) being a practical maximum.

Utilizing the technology developed for oil well stimulation by hydrofracing, a disposal system which permanently fixes the waste has been proven. Large quantities of radioactive waste can be processed by a single well system making this method an attractive method for permanent radioactive waste disposal. The system depends on locating a relatively thick formation of impermeable, but easily fracturable rock such as a shale, creating a horizontal fracture, pumping the waste into the fracture in a form which will subsequently solidify and seal the fracture from the well system. The paper presents the theoretical considerations from creating and extending horizontal fractures and how these considerations were used in designing a waste disposal system which is now operating.

Results for the first underground test of the ventilated drum in a U.S. coal mine are presented. Tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., to evaluate dust control effectiveness in a western mine and for gas control in a full scale laboratory facility. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust-laden air from the cutting zone through twelve water- powered "dust capture" tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. High pressure water up to 1 12.48 kg per cm2 (1,600 psig), released from sprays, induces maximum airflow of 1.89 m3/sec (4,000 cfm) from the face side of the drum and provides cleaning for respirable dust and improved methane dispersion. At the gob side of the drum a deflector plate, attached to the cowl arm, turns the water spray and a proportion of the cleaned air back into the cutting zone. More than 50 ventilated drums have been installed to date in England, and their tests carried out on fixed height and single-ended ranging drum shearers have shown reductions in respirable dust of 60-80 pct, as compared with conventional wet cutting. The U.S. test on a double drum shearer showed slightly lower reduction.

A detailed assessment of acid rock drainage (ARD) potential was conducted at the Quintette Coal Mine site in northeastern British Columbia The site is unusual in that the coal seams contain low sulphur levels as compared to eastern coals (typically less than 0.5%), and the non-coal wastes generally do not to have the potential to generate acid on the basis of static ABA tests. The presence of small iron-stained seeps on the pit walls indicate localized sulphide oxidation, while the overall mine site drainage has remained of excellent quality with extremely low levels of metals after approximately 15 years of mining. Thus the site provides an excellent comparison to more problematic coal mine sites. For the Quintette assessment, static acid-base accounting (ABA) analyses of individual samples were compared to criteria for potentially acid generating materials developed for the U.S. Appalachian coal, as well as criteria developed in British Columbia for hard rock mines. Geologic units were characterized by the percentage of samples, or weighted thickness, that was deemed potentially acid generating (PAG). Links were then made to actual seepage and water quality emanating from geologic units around the site. Seeps at the site demonstrate a large range in pH (2.32 to 8.18). The few acidic seeps (pH < 4.0) were found to contain elevated levels of sulphates, dissolved iron, manganese and aluminum, consistent with the metals typically of concern in Appalachian coal mines. Other heavy metals that were detected in acidic seeps at Quintette included copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium. The use of simple ABA tests, and comparison of individual sample results with the Appalachian and British Columbia criteria, was found to be useful in predicting the probable sources of the small localized acidic seeps.

University of Idaho scientists research under U.S. Bureau of Mines Cooperative Agreement C0278001 constitutes a complex hydrogeological, hydrochemical and metallurgical mine waste management project at an existing Superfund site. Technologies that may prove useful for the extraction of dissolved metals from acid mine water and solid wastes include lixiviation and biosorption. Acid mine water is the major, long-term problem in the valley. We are attempting to delineate the major sources of ground water recharge which feed the acid mine drainage and their hydraulic properties. Grouting of recharge areas may facilitate minimizing the production of acid mine drainage if recharge pathways can be identified.

The current economic climate of low commodity prices and increasing costs has put a lot of pressure on mining companies to ensure their operations will survive through the current economic downturn. While history tells us that the cycle will turn around and prices will go back up again, how many mining companies will be left to take advantage of the next upturn? On average in Australia, the maintenance of mining equipment accounts for up to 50% of operating costs; which equates to nearly $15bn per year. In addition to trying to boost productivity, mining companies are also putting a lot of pressure on reducing costs; all with the intention of maintaining/increasing profit margins and thereby keeping shareholders ?happy?. The whole premise of our economy is based on ?growth? and ?profits?. Movements in the market place force mine owners to ?react? to short term fluctuations. And if that movement is downward; operations people at the sites are forced to start reducing costs. Is this cost reduction done in a logical, systematic way where all risks (short-, medium- and long term) are considered? Invariably, the answer is no! Short term ?fixes? are normally implemented with little, or no, regard for medium- and long-term impact. And the reason for this is that management is not fully focused on the long term; focus is mainly on survival. Decision making is driven by shareholder sentiment and history tells us that this is largely short-term. So given these paramteres to work within, what role can ?Asset Management? play in assisting management to meet shareholder and market requirements whilst still maintaining long-term viability of their operations (to the long-term benefit of shareholders dare I say). As maintenance costs account for nearly half the operating costs of mining companies; the ?smart? management of assets is not only crucial; it is essential for survival in today?s economic climate. What is asset management? Asset Management, according to the UK-based Institute of Asset Management (IAM) is ?the systematic and coordinated activities and practices through which an organization optimally and sustainably manages its assets and asset systems, their associated performance, risks and expenditures over their life cycles for the purpose of achieving its organizational strategic plan.? How important is asset management in today?s mining companies? IAM goes on to say: ?This definition of asset management represents a significantly greater scope than just the maintenance or care of physical assets, and is closer to the central purpose of an organization. Good asset management considers and optimizes the conflicting priorities of asset utilization and asset care, of short-term performance opportunities and long-term sustainability, and between capital investments and subsequent operating costs, risks and performance. ?Life cycle? asset management is also more than simply the consideration of capital costs and operating costs over pre-determined asset ?life? assumptions. Truly optimized, whole life asset management includes risk exposures and performance attributes, and considers the asset?s economic life as the result of an optimization process (depending upon the design, utilization, maintenance, obsolescence and other factors).?

Oil-field brines have been collected and analyzed from Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks in the Mississippi Salt Dome Basin, from Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks, southwestern Arkansas, and from Ordovician and Silurian rocks, southern Michigan. All of these brines are genetically related to evaporites and appear to be brines expelled from halite-bearing rocks, presumably during compaction. The brines in rocks closest to the halite-bearing rocks are uniformly low in lead and zinc suggesting that the metals in metal-rich brines are not acquired within evaporite sequences. The metals in metal- rich brines in Mississippi and in Russia appear to be derived from red beds and may have been originally associated with ferric iron oxyhydroxides. Reduction of these compounds by migrating hydrocarbons appears to release lead and zinc to the associated brines accompanied by the fomation of authigenic ankerite.

A column flotation system was designed to conduct release analyses of a very finely disseminated, stratiform, copper ore from the Denali Copper Prospect, Alaska. Chalcopyrite is finely disseminated in a carbonate matrix and pyrite is disseminated in both the chalcopyrite and gangue, requiring grinding to 20 microns for adequate liberation. A 25 mm x 2.4 m glass flotation column was designed. The ore and its flotation tailings were repeatedly floated to obtain a rougher concentrate, which was repeatedly floated to produce release fractions. These were analyzed for copper, iron calcium and magnesium. Release curves were plotted. The procedure was replicated at each of two grinds; 99% and 88% passing 37 microns (400 mesh), and should find application for flotation characterization and process selection. Bond grindability work was also conducted.

Kennecott&apos;s Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800&apos;s. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott&apos;s concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.

The 345 km long Taiwan High Speed Rail Project will connect the island’s two most populated cities, Taipei and Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung is the world’s third busiest port. The 23 km of alignment on Contract C230 requires the construction of 5,879 m of shallow mined tunnels ranging from 137 m to 1,285 m in length. All nine of these tunnels are mined using NATM methodology. Two of the tunnels, T01 and T08 are in the Toukoshan Formation. This paper will discuss the mining methods, ground support design, and the instrumentation installed to monitor and verify its effectiveness in the two aforementioned tunnels.

The time-worn adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" was never more applicable than when used in reference to coal mine safety. Many individuals have dedicated many hours to developing effective accident prevention programs, and much has been accomplished. Each production escalation, however, creates new hazards and safety problems which need special study and research. It is a never ending cyle. To study the progress of coal-mine safety is to raise memories of many individuals who have been dedicated to removing the hazards that have developed with increased productivity and deeper penetration into the earth for coal. Some vivid examples of this dedication are the works of the men who pioneered the use of the safety lamp and the use of rock dust in mining.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Granduc mine is situated on the west side of Granduc Mountain in the Leduc River area of north¬west British Columbia about 51 km (32 miles) north¬east of the town of Stewart. Entry is by means of a 16.6-km (10.3-mile) long haulage adit from the concentrator site at Tide Lake. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore mineralization varies from dis¬seminated to irregular semimassive stringers generally associated with highly folded and sheared biotite-rich sections of metasediments. The ore bodies vary in width from 3.6 m (12 ft) to over 18 m (60 ft) in a zone some 800 m (2600 ft) in length dipping at an average of 75° to the west and plunging steeply to the south. Capping varies in thickness from 0 to over 300 m (1000 ft). SELECTION OF MINING METHOD In the early stages of planning the primary require¬ments to be met by the mining method were: (1) suit¬ability to high output and productivity, (2) adaptability to mechanization in order to minimize operating costs, and (3) minimization of the costs and the development period for preproduction. Considering these, the selection of a mining method was narrowed to a choice be¬tween sublevel long-hole stoping or sublevel caving. A method utilizing backfill was ruled out as uneconomical, especially since mill tailings would not be readily available. At the time, the following facts about the ore body were recognized: (1) the average width of the ore body was 12 m (40 ft), (2) 30% of the stoping blocks were in areas of 6 m (20 ft) or less in width; (3) in many cases, ore zones were located in parallel lenses or were irregular in shape; (4) major faults were present in the hanging wall close to the ore, with minor faults within the different ore zones; and (5) the ore itself was lami¬nated with fractures and jointing crossing such bedding planes. Considering these factors, the two stoping meth¬ods were compared. Sublevel Open Stoping The characteristics of sublevel open stoping are: 1) It is generally not used for widths below 6 m (20 ft) since the ratio of waste development increases as level intervals are reduced to insure good control of long-hole drilling. 2) This method is used where ground is relatively competent. Otherwise more pillar support is required, increasing ore losses or mining costs with pillar recovery. 3) The method is not easily adaptable to parallel ore zones separated by relatively narrow waste bands. 4) Close control of pillar and stope design will per¬mit some degree of dilution control. Sublevel Caving Sublevel caving is characterized by the following: 1) The method can be used for a variety of ore widths, recognizing that 3 m (10 ft) in width may be an economical minimum. 2) It is particularly favorable where wall rock is weak. 3) The method has flexibility so that irregular ore bodies or parallel lenses can be mined. 4) The need to leave pillars for support is eliminated 5) Dilution and tonnage recovery are interrelated. With concern about the stability of the hanging wall and the geometry of the ore bodies, there was a growing favor to choose the sublevel caving method. However, this method was relatively new to Canadian mining practice. Teams were sent to Sweden to tour mines using sublevel caving and to study their methods and any extraction and dilution problems. The objective was to develop cost and performance data and ore recovery grades and tonnages for feasibility comparisons. Next, detailed mine plans were developed covering a three-year period using sublevel caving and sublevel open stoping. Extensive analyses of the development and production costs for each method were made. With sublevel caving, ore losses of 10% with a 20% dilution rate were used. The same ore loss was estimated for sublevel open stoping with dilution varying from 11 to 15%. As a result of these studies, the decision was made to use sublevel caving partly because slightly lower op¬erating costs, together with higher productivity, offset the adverse effects of higher dilution; and partly be¬cause, at the start, there would be less risk in being able to handle the ground, and the method offered more flexi¬bility. Open stoping was not ruled out for testing at a later date. It was recognized that some other method of mining would be required for mining the ore extensions below the glacier, where surface subsidence must be avoided. During the operating life of the mine, open stoping was tested in narrow width ore zones and found un¬satisfactory due to wall failure. A cut-and-fill stope, utilizing run-of-mine waste from development, was also operated on a trial basis. A sequence was finally estab¬lished that permitted ground control; however, produc¬tivity needed considerable improvement in order for open stoping to be considered as a sole alternative for mining below the main haulage level. At the termination of operations in June 1978 over 13 000 000 t (14,500,000 st) had been extracted from above the main haulage level at production rates varying from 3270 to 7250 t/d (4000 to 8000 stpd). Sublevel Caving Methods Two basic methods were used, transverse and longi¬tudinal. The transverse method was used mainly in the upper C ore body in widths greater than 18 m (60 ft), and occasionally as an alternative to the longitudinal method in localized areas where strike faulting inter¬fered with normal development. The physical properties of an ore body require determination for virtually all mining projects, new and existing. The extent and regularity of such determinations being subject to the size and homogeneity of the orebody. Such properties have an impact at the design stage of new plants, with respect to equipment specification, and thus effects capital costs; and also impacts on the operating costs of new and existing plants, with respect to power consumption, production levels and part replacements. All of these can severely alter the bottom line and can be the determining factor in the economic viability of many projects. This paper examines some of the most common properties that are measured, the procedures utilised in determining these properties, and their variability under conditions of reproducibil­ity, and to a lesser extent repeatability. The properties looked at were Impact Crushing Work Index, Abrasion Index, Bond Rod Mill Work Index and Bond Ball Mill Work Index. A number of testing laboratories throughout Australia and the US were utilised in the survey. The results showed up some interesting and important features of the procedures used, all of which have become accepted industry standards, and which had varying effects on the final result. Tests such as the rod and ball mill indices would appear to have reasonably robust procedures which allowed for the determinations of the respective index without the introduction of significant variations, although there were indications that variations could occur. The other tests gave a sufficiently different picture to be able to suggest that an argument could be made for a more intensive investigation to be undertaken, with the possible outcome that a modified test procedure or an alternative test is required.

There is a natural resistance to change in any form. When it comes to implementing a game-changing technology like autonomous haulage on an operating mine site, the resistance can at times appear insurmountable. Whether based on real information or misguided preconceptions, it?s essential that we don?t underestimate the effort it will take to overcome this resistance, while clearly recognizing when it?s worth the effort. These realizations did not happen overnight for sites where autonomous haulage has been implemented. Nor did they happen overnight for manufacturers of autonomous mining equipment. Caterpillar, for example, began building toward autonomy more than 30 years ago and had a truck operating in the mid-1990s. Lessons learned during those early years led to the realization that there was much more to be learned ? not just about the machines themselves, but about the systems and knowledge that must be in place for a successful implementation. Working closely with customers, initiating real-life demonstrations on mine sites, having discussions with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders ? these and many other activities were necessary before autonomy could be fully and successfully launched. After decades of effort, Caterpillar?s first official commercial autonomous mine site went to work in 2011 in Farmington, NM.

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990&apos;s. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

One third of the world&apos;s and most US kaolin is produced from Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary sedimentary strata in Georgia and South Carolina. The kaolin is part of a belt extending to Arkansas of aluminous lateritic deposits, including bauxite. Original sediments were profoundly altered by chemical weathering during Early Tertiary time. Mining exploits those uncommon deposits where extreme leaching and chemical recombination have produced a clay of nearly pure mineral kaolinite. . Its whiteness, brightness, fine particle size, platelet shape, surface chemistry, and chemical composition make kaolin an important pigment, filler, extender and chemical compound in the paper, paint, plastics, ceramics and catalyst industries.

Detailed mapping, using a large diameter diamond-drill in conjunction with high resolution reflection seismics, has increased known resources of kaolin clay and glass-grade silica sand from scattered deposits generally < 1 km2 to large areas of Cretaceous valley fill up to 130 m thick. Detailed chemical and physical analysis of drill core is presently underway. Silica sand deposits intersected in this study are up to 99.4 % SiO2 without beneficiation. Light grey to white kaolin clays identified by XRD and DT A have concentrations values (without beneficiation) up to 47.28% SiO2, 37.44% Al2O3, 0.45% Fe2O3, 0.49% K2O, 0.07% Nap, 0.07% CaO and 0.39% MgO.

The design and effectiveness of ground consolidation to regain stability of longwall faces vary widely and are often based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. Little is known regarding product migration characteristics or change in rockmass conditions as a result of the application of consolidation chemicals. This paper presents the in-situ testing rationale designed and implemented recently across several longwall operations in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia to provide quantitative measurement of the actual zone of influence of various resin injection products. Product migra- tion was physically measured by monitoring the change in rockmass temperature as a result of the exothermic chemical reaction of the various strata consolidation chemicals used. In conjunction with strata coring and Lugeon transmissivity testing pre- and post-injection to characterise the improvement in rockmass conditions due to consolidation product injection. The results of the testing programme, migration measurements, and rockmass assessment are presented, along with a discussion on how site- based Rock Mechanics Engineers can incorporate the data into the design of strata consolidation plans.

The use of diesel engines in underground hard-rock mines dates back to the late 1940s. For the first several years, they were used only occasionally, being limited to a few metal mines that experimented with crawler¬mounted front-end loaders, tractor-trailer hauling units, a few tractors for drill-compressor mounts, and utility cleanup machines. By the mid-1950s, track loaders had become commonplace in limestone mines and uranium mines on the Colorado Plateau in the United States, as well as in Canada. Use of crawler-mounted tractors as drill and compressor mounts also increased. By the end of the 1950s, rubber-tired loaders and some haulers began to replace the track-type machines and rail-mounted cars that had been in use. About 1960, the rubber-tired machines brought about a new era of underground mining mobility and flexibility, centered on a method commonly known as "trackless mining." Ultimately, many of the underground rail-type systems for loading and hauling were replaced by the trackless mining technique. ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS The size and nature of mineral deposits, plus ground control techniques, historically had dictated small open¬ings to the surface from many underground mines. The small mine openings led to the development of special rubber-tired loaders and haulers designed specifically for access through the small openings. However, some mines, particularly those in massive mineral deposits, are able to excavate and maintain very large openings, and some use modified room-and-pillar systems. With the large mine openings, the use of larger, more produc¬tive equipment such as that commonly found in surface mining becomes economical. In fact, productivity gen¬erally increases at a more pronounced rate than machine size increases because many of the larger machines were designed for heavy-duty shot-rock applications in surface mines and construction sites where the handling of blasted rock is common. Combining greater productivity often inherent in larger machines, with reduced downtime resulting from using fully developed machines with fast parts and service backup, some mine operators have been able to reduce material handling costs appreciably while reduc¬ing manpower requirements for operators and main¬tenance men. Large mine openings increase the amount of rock that must be handled in the development work, and they sometimes increase the dilution in stopes or rooms, de¬pending upon the dimensions of the ore zone. Providing adequate space for the unrestricted operation of large surface mining machines could, therefore, lead to more waste segregation and handling costs. It could also cause greater ore dilution that would result in a lower grade of ore being delivered to the processing plant. The tradeoffs between opposing cost factors must be reconciled and balanced to achieve the best overall cost of the crude ore, concentrates, or product. EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS Loaders and haulers designed for surface mining are seldom used underground in their standard con¬figurations without some modifications. If done, the modifications generally are made by the equipment dealer and/or the user, and the modifications usually include one or more of the following items: 1) The exhaust stack is lowered, and its direction is changed. Usually, it is repositioned horizontally to the rear, or it is fed into the engine fan to diffuse the exhaust gases. 2) The operator&apos;s position is lowered by either lowering the seat or changing the seat to a side mount. 3) The operator controls are adjusted to fit the new operator position. 4) Other components, such as the radiator and loader tower, are lowered. 5) Special bumper guards are mounted at the base of the radiator area. 6) An exhaust conditioner is mounted and con¬nected, using either a catalytic or a water-type condi¬tioner, or both.
