Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature's wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don't exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa's "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

Pittsburgh #8 coal cleaned by the conventional froth flotation was oxidized in a 2-liter Parr Stirred Top Bench Reactor. The oxidation time was varied up to 5 hours; the temperature, from 150 to 225°C, the oxygen pressure, from 15 to 500 psi; and coal dosage, from 15 to 60 grams in 600 ml of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring total acidic group formed on the coal surface as well as by measuring the adsorption of calcium ion from a solution under standard conditions. It was found that the oxidation increased with increasing oxygen pressure without much leveling-off effect. However, the oxidation of coal increased sharply from 150°C to 175°C and then tended to level off above 175°C. The adsorption of calcium was reached more than 3% on the coal oxidized under favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The BTU loss was sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concludes that the optimum oxidation of coal should be conducted at high oxygen pressures around (e.g. 500 psi) 170°C for 3 hours. This study also concludes that the oxidation in an autoclave is far superior to that in a fluidized bed in terms of calcium adsorption, BTU loss and reaction time.

"The Doha Metro Project is one of the most relevant ongoing tunneling projects. The whole project consists of about 100 km of tunnels with 21 EPB TBMs working in the same period. Due to the variability of the geological formations, the soil conditioning is a relevant aspect of this project because the parameters should be frequently adjusted to achieve the best performances of the TBMs. The study of the soil conditioning has been carried out accurately to obtain the best results on site. The study of the geotechnical data, the choice of the most suitable foaming agents and polymers and the laboratory study of the soil conditioning has been a fundamental part of the job. The application of the soil conditioning products on site with the analysis of the TBM data have confirmed the preliminary study results with some correlation between the features of the ground and the soil conditioning parameters to be used. INTRODUCTION Phase 1 of the Doha Metro Underground project is composed by 3 lines able to bring passengers to all the points of interest in the Qatar capital city. The Red Line, also called coastal line, connects the north of the city to the south, and to the new Hamad International Airport, following the coast line. The Golden Line, called Historic Line, will connect the southern area of Doha to the “Aspire zone” the area of the city where many state of the art sport centers are located, passing through the old city center. The Green Line, named education line, will connect the old city center to the Doha Education City. All the lines are realized with 2 tubes, single track. The whole underground project is realized with 21 TBMs, excavation diameter of 7.10 m. The project has been divided in 4 packages, for a total excavation length of more than 100 km. The need to underpass roads, existing buildings, and to excavate, in some areas, at less than 100 m from the coast line, forced the choice of a tunneling system with Earth Pressure Balance (EPB), that involves in the project another fundamental aspect of this tunneling system: the soil conditioning. The soil conditioning has multiples functions in the EPB system such as to make the soil suitable to properly apply the pressure on the tunnel face and to be extracted effectively with the screw conveyor. To properly study this topic it was necessary to study the geological formations to be excavated, the hydrogeological conditions of the underground, the foam injection systems of the EPB TBMs and to perform specific tests to evaluate a suitable conditioning to be verified and adjusted during the real scale application."

The primary and secondary organic matter in sedimentary rocks changes markedly when it becomes heated as a consequence of thick sediment accumulation and normal geothermal gradients, high geothermal gradients, hydrothermal fluids, or igneous events. Contact zones adjacent to small igneous dikes allow sampling of a single sedimentary bed that has been exposed to temperatures in a range as great as 30-500°C. Dike-heated rocks are, therefore, good sites for research on thermal effects because variation of the original organic matter is minimal, the range of heating is great, and the history of rock heating in a dike zone is relatively well established. In rare cases, such as at the dike near Wolcott, Colorado, described in this paper, the rock samples are sufficiently unweathered to allow analysis of secondary bitumens generated by the heating. We show by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and geochemistry the kinds of solid organic constituents in sedimen¬tary rocks and in ore deposits and the effects of heating. The primary phytoclasts that make up kerogen In sedimentary rock and in some ore deposits (pollen, resin, charcoal, humified woody remains, etc.) change in ways that are familiar to coal specialists. Progressive loss of moisture and other volatile matter yields residual kerogen that Is relatively higher in carbon and lower In oxygen and hydrogen, and has greater molecular or polymer ordering. In our contact zone examples, atomic H/C ratios of kerogen decrease from 0.8 (one case from 1.4) to 0.4, the hydrogen index from Rock-Eval pyrolysis decreases from 70 to 5, and the transformation ratio from Rock-Eval pyrolysis increases from 0.06 to 0.5 with increased heating. The visible effects of heating seen by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy include formation of vesicles and flow structure, the development of optical anisotropy and mesophase, change of color, and increase in the refractive index, absorption, and reflectance. Some of these changes In primary organic matter are observed also in secondary organic matter, for example, in solid bitumens in sedimentary gold ores or In lead-zinc deposits. Quantification of color or absorption changes is difficult because it Is hard to make thin sections of organic matter with uniform thickness. However, natural objects with uniform thickness can be used. We show the colors of pollen In rocks from the Salton geothermal field at temperatures ranging from 100 to 300°C, and of pollen heated in laboratory bombs from 150 to 400°C. Measurement of vitrinite reflectance is a practical way to quantify thermal changes of kerogen and minerals of most sedimentary rocks because vitrinite is fairly widespread In sedimentary rocks of Devonian age and younger. For example, the reflectance of vitrinite rises from the regional level, as low as 0.4 % Ro, to more than 5% Ro adjacent to dikes that cut sedimentary rock. This is equivalent to the rank change from subbituminous coal to extreme meta-anthracite. The rise is most abrupt near thin dikes, but when the distance from the igneous contact is expressed as a ratio of dike thickness the reflectance rise is similar for all dikes. Controlled heating of vitrinite-bearing rocks In the laboratory provides a means to assign known temperatures to vitrinite-reflectance values. The derived plots of temperature In dike contact zones have the same shape and level as those predicted by heat theory, and the temperature lines extend toward dike contact temperatures that are about half those of most magmas, as expected if the intrusions did not flow past the sedimentary rock for a long time. The globular submicroscopic structure of vitrinite and Its heterogeneity, which we show by means of transmission electron microscopy, pose some problems In selecting a uniform type of vitrinite for measurement of thermal changes. At present, routine reflectance values of vitrinite dispersed in rocks have a relative uncertainty as great as 10%. Thermally caused chemical changes in the primary kerogen, especially decrease in the oxygen and hydrogen contents, lead to formation of secondary products in the contact zone. The measured changes of secondary organic products in these rocks include formation of peaks In concentration of total extractable organic matter and in hydrocarbons, and in the saturated/aromatic hydrocarbon ratio over the interval where primary organic hydrogen decreases most rapidly--then destruction or expulsion of these products at high temperatures. The odd carbon-number predominance of the C25-C31 n-alkanes In samples far from the dike disappears by about 1.3% Ro whereas the 13C: 12C ratios of the saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons increase over most of the thermal range. The saturated aromatic hydrocarbon ratio at first increases, corresponding to thermal generation of saturated hydrocarbons, then decreases in the most altered samples. One use of organic petrography, in addition to identifying organic fades or thermal alteration, is recognition of sample contamination such as the solid organic additives used in some drilling muds which may contaminate geochemical samples.

The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.

The present work is concerned with selective dissolution of niobium from Gabal El Faliq concentrate sample by using fluoridefree process. The chemical analysis of concentrate sample revealed the presence of high amount of ZrO2, Nb2O5, Re2O3, and HfO2 assaying 33.6, 1.99, 4.8, and 1.2%w/w respectively. Several economic minerals including zircon, samarskite, fergusonite, and xenotimewere recorded in the studied sample. About 98%of Nb content was selectively dissolved at the optimumconditions of 1:2 concentrate sample: KOH weight ratio, 2.5 h fusion time, and fusion temperature of 550 °C. Organic solvent extraction process using Aliquat 336S in xylene was effectively used for preparing pure Nb2O5 (98.95%).

Regulations, such as the MINER Act of 2006, require the installation of redundant and secondary communication systems to assure that contact can be established with coal miners who may become trapped underground as a result of an event such as a fire, explosion or inundation. For half a century, the orientation towards underground communications has been that more complex systems better serve the coal miner. However, if a goal is to provide for an alternative means of establishing communication between the surface and trapped miners underground, then some of the technology employed should be simple, reliable and cost-effective. Coal mines spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on exploratory drillholes to characterize reserves, sometimes decades ahead of mine development. During the pre-mine planning phases, certain exploratory drillholes could be located and then outfitted with a simple communication link that would remain compatible with the continuing evolution of communication systems. Inexpensive links, whose locations would be accurately recorded, would be exposed by continuous miners during mine entry development, thereby allowing an underground phone to be connected to a surface station in the event of an emergency. A latent network of these communication links could be installed for less than $500 each, minimally affecting drilling and grouting operations, and could be designed to be compatible with many communication devices. This research examines methods and materials for incorporating an embedded communication link during pre-mine exploration drilling, addresses significant factors affecting its implementation, and presents a recommended design. Since mine plans are known to change, the objective is to minimize cost so that, if not used, the investment is minimal for a potential secondary means of communication between the surface and underground workings.

Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. The Meikle Mine uses long-hole open stoping and cut-and-fill methods with backfill as the primary ground support technique. The mine operates at 2,858 tonnes per day (3,150 tpd) and has sustained operation in excess of 3,175 tonnes per day (3,500 tpd). Consistent backfill production is critical in achieving these mining rates. The heart of the system is a 7.65 cubic meter (10-cyd) horizontal shaft ribbon mixer located 328 m (1,075 ft) underground. System control is through several PLC's, allowing for a high degree of automation and process flexibility. Aggregate feed is routed 257 m (842 A) through vertical drop pipes in the ventilation shaft, a rockbox, transfer raises, and then into either of two raisebored storage silos. The aggregate is crushed mine waste, nominally 70% 3.8 cm x 1.0 cm (1-1/2"x 3/8") and 30% -1.0 cm (- 3/8"). The binder is routed through a vertical borehole, surge bins, and transfer raises. The binder is a mixture of Type II cement and fly ash. Two primary manufactured fill designs are produced: a high strength mix for stopes which will be undercut; and a low strength mix for stopes with only rib exposure. The high strength target is 5.5 Mpa (800psi) unconfined compressive strength in test cylinders. The low strength target is 2.8 Mpa (400 psi). The systim has allowed consistent achievement of these targets, while experience has allowed reduced costs and increased efficiencies. Fill placement is through 6.1 cubic meter (8 cyd) LHD's dumping into stopes. Specific sills and cut-and-fill drifts are jammed to the back. System enhancements have included colloidal mixers for cemented waste slurry placement and transfer raises for sending manufactured fill to the lower levels of the mine.

For several decades, the minerals industry has used leaching techniques to extract metals from rocks whose grade was too low to be treated profitably using conventional metallurgical techniques, and, as of 1972, about 15% of domestic copper production was derived using leaching methods (Beall 1). Increasing interest is currently being directed toward solution mining, particularly with respect to copper, for basically two reasons. In the first place, geological exploration has outlined several copper deposits of large tonnage and 1m', grade which are buried at sufficient depth to preclude open-pit mining which would make such mineral deposits ore deposits. Nevertheless, these occurrences provide significant potential if they could be treated by chemical leaching in situ. Secondly, the porphyry deposits of the western united States, which provide by far the largest percentage of domestic copper, do not terminate geometrically with sharp borders. These large disseminated bodies commonly decrease in grade laterally away from volumes of rock containing ore grade metallization, and the distinction between ore and waste is strictly economic. In order to extract ore grade material from the ground, a significant amount of rock containing sub-ore-grade copper must also be removed which, when placed on dumps, is amenable to solution mining. These two considerations clearly indicate the reasons for the growing interest in solution , leaching techniques--namely the ability to exploit deeply buried low grade deposits and the expansion of reserves in deposits currently under production.

Separation of geochemical anomalies from background is an important and essential issue in the exploration of mineral deposits. Statistical methods are used to separation of anomaly from background. Fractal/multifractal and singularity methods are very suitable for the separation of weak anomalies. For interpolation, various methods could be used such as most distance-weighting methods, kriging, spline interpolation, interpolating polynomials, and finite difference methods. This paper addressed application of multifractal techniques together with finite difference procedure to detect the anomalous regions. Fractal models such as concentration–area, spectrum–area, and singularity index model were selected to identify Pb–Zn anomalies. In this research, 170 samples from 33 boreholes were taken in the Haft-Savaran area and analyzed for determination of Pb–Zn anomaly. Singularity method was a suitable method for separating Pb and Zn anomalies. Also, the results showed that the geochemical anomaly has occurred along NE–SW trend and is consistent with the sulfide mineralization process and the faults of the region.

In the grinding of dry non-metallic materials such as rocks, ores, gypsum, lime, and cement clinker, it is recognized that only a relatively small portion of the energy is utilized for actual size reduction, and the major portion of the energy used is converted into heat. As a result, heat is generated inside grinding mills imparting to the ground product a higher temperature than that of the mill feed. In some cases, as for instance in grinding cement clinker and gypsum into finished cement, it may be desirable to keep this temperature increase within certain limits, to avoid any change in the properties of the product and, because consumers may specify a maximum temperature of the finished product for reasons associated, with the tulimate use of the cement. The actual proportions of heat and useful work are somewhat indefinite. Some tests have indicated that nearly all the energy is converted into heat, and. other investigators have found that they could account for "everything except the noise." Investigations sponsored by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and carried out with an adiabatic calorimeter, indicated that a surprisingly high 19 percent of the energy might actually be used for size reduc¬tion. However, for the purpose of the following discussion it will be assumed that: (Fig. 1) 10% is lost in motor and gears 10% is lost by radiation and convection from the mill body 10% is used for size reduction, and. that 70% of the energy input leaves the mill as heat in the ground. product. A typical example (Fig. 2) would be a 7x22-ft tube mill operating in open circuit, driven by a 400 hp motor, charged with 77,000 lb of grinding media and producing 70 bbl or 26,300 lb of cement per hour. Reducing this cement from a clinker size of 96 percent passing a No. 16 mesh sieve to a specific surface of 3,230 sq cm per gm (Blaine) will increase the temperature of the cement approximately 143F above the temperature of the feed, as explained later. If the tempera¬ture of the clinker therefore is 125F, the finished cement will be 268F, which in some cases may be too hot. : When cement temperatures approach a range during grinding where dehydration of the gypsum becomes a problem, a logical consideration would be some means of reducing the temperature before it attains the range conducive to gypsum dehydration. Regardless of the varying degrees of heat generated within the mill or mills during grindingto various finenesses, consideration of the maximum safe limit for any type of cement being ground, which may vary fromplant to plant, govern in refining the mill circuit to obtain a safe temperature range. All plants are not necessarily required to do the same cooling job, and may or may not use cement coolers following the grinding circuit. (Not discussed in this paper). In the past, various means have been employed for controlling this temperature increase, Such means have included water cooling of the outside of the mill shell; equipping the shell with cooling fins; injection of moisture inside the mill; ventilation through the mill; and., in cases of closed-circuit grinding, drawing cooling air through the classifier; the purpose in all such cases being to remove heat from the grinding system.

This study summarizes the results of various numerical and laboratory experiments per-formed to study the effect of airflow recirculation on gas concentration. The numerical exercises were carried out on a simulated mine ventilation net-work. The laboratory experiments were conducted at the Mackay School of Mines' airflow monitoring system in Reno, Nevada. In both cases, the airflow was recirculated through the system by means of a main fan and a set of booster fans. The booster fans were positioned to produce two types of recirculation: In line and Cross-cut. For each type, various recirculation conditions were generated by changing the booster fan pressure. During each test, the gas emission rate at the simulated working face was kept constant. The study illustrates the conditions under which controlled airflow recirculation may be used to solve a district ventilation problem.

Breccia pipes are vertical pipe-like columns of rocks that provide conduits for fluid flow and open spaces for mineral precipitation, hence are focus areas for exploration. In the Gallinas Mountains, Lincoln County, New Mexico, there is recorded production of Cu, Pb, Ag, F, Fe, REE (as bastnäsite), and Au from 1902 to 1980, but no production reported from the breccia pipes. Previous studies described the occurrence of REE in breccia pipes, but their transportation and deposition controls are still unclear. The aim of this research is to characterize the magmatic-hydrothermal breccia pipes in order to understand the geochemical and physical conditions of deposition of REE and gold in the breccia pipes found in the Gallinas Mountains. There are more than 20 exposed breccia pipes that form a NE-trending belt about 3–5 kilometers, mostly gray-brown and consist of angular- to sub-rounded rock fragments, some host high concentrations of REE (80,500 ppm total REE) and Au (175 ppb). Preliminary studies suggest they are magmatic and intruded into the host rock and, subsequently, hydrothermal fluids precipitated F-REE and Au along the edges of some breccia pipes. More studies are underway to test this hypothesis.

"Talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic, and lacking in amphiboles. In southwest Montana, talc formed from hydrothermally altered dolomitic marbles, and is still actively mined. These talc deposits are typically in contact with quartzofeldspathic gneiss and marble. Accessory minerals vary between these rocks and the ore producing body; the identification and characterization of such minerals requires carefully selected analytical methods. Recent litigation and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits challenges the talc mining industry in Montana, and elsewhere in the world. INTRODUCTION Commercial talc has been mined from the deposits in southwest Montana since the 1940s, and by 1956 the region had output 200,000 tons of talc ore (Chidester et al., 1964). Commercial talc refers to rocks containing more than 20% of the mineral talc (McCarthy et al., 2006); the ores from Montana typically contain upwards of 90% talc. This region remains the leading domestic source of talc in the U.S. partly due to the reserves in the area, and partly due to the diagnostic purity of the ore compared to that of other regions, some of which are no longer actively mined. The mineral talc, a sheet silicate, is expressed by the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and therefore can form in geologic environments that are rich in Mg, Si, O and water. The protolith for the talc deposits in southwest Montana is a dolomitic marble, but other common protoliths include ultramafic igneous, mafic igneous, and siliceous dolomites (McCarthy et al., 2006). Physical properties such as hardness of 1 on Mohs hardness scale, white streak and slippery feel are among some of the reasons why talc is so widely used as fillers in a number of industries. In decreasing order, ceramics, paper, paint, roofing, plastics, rubber, and cosmetics are the leading domestic industries that use talc despite the decreasing trend in U.S. talc use and production since 1994 (Virta, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanism of talc formation in southwest Montana by focusing on talc deposits and surrounding rocks in the Ruby, Greenhorn, and the Gravelly Ranges, and to relate the mechanism of formation to the composition of talc ores. The compositional data show mineral content of selected ores, and the major and trace element content of those minerals, specifically talc. Our electron microprobe (EPMA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence data for samples from five mines in these three ranges provide continued evidence of the purity of these ores despite claims made during recent litigation that these ores contain asbestos. The five mines that we discuss include the Beaverhead, Treasure, Regal, Willow Creek, and Yellowstone Mines (Figure 1.)"

The Miami In-situ mine of BHP Copper is located in Globe-Miami, Arizona. The mine leaches mineralized leach capping over a supergene enriched sulfide deposit, and has produced over 500 million lbs of copper during the last 50 years. The Miami unit has identified several opportunities to enhance and expand in-situ production. A computer block model consisting of strict geologic controls, mineralogy, and metallurgical data was developed to assist in the determination of the leachable copper resource. An understanding of the accessibility and solubility of the resource to leaching solutions and the integration of hydrogeologic and hydrometallurgical information was necessary for completion of this project.

"A commercially available through-the-earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electricfield (E-field) sensing to send text-based communications through two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivities. IntroductionWireless, through-the-earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point-to-point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. Using this approach, communications are established without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure. As a result, TTE systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers, 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon, 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon, 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker, 2006; Wadley, 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. Peru has become an established mining country. The industry and industry-related businesses account for a significant amount of the country´s revenue, on state and local levels. But like other countries with thriving mining industries, Peru has seen its mining industry revenues fall off in recent years due to a lackluster global economy. And the mining industry in Peru must also deal with increasing concerns about mining?s environmental impacts, local community and other social issues, as well as a regulatory environment that has placed more restrictions on what miners can do. That said, the Peruvian government is beginning to realize how important mining and natural resource development is to building the nation?s economy, improving its infrastructure and lifting its population out of poverty. The government support was evident during the Perumin 2013 mining convention, held in September in Arequipa. In addition to Peru?s President Ollanta Humala speaking at the closing ceremony, the country?s ministers of Energy and Mines, and Economy and Finance participated in the event, as well as numerous other federal and state authorities. Perumin is put on by the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Peru (IIMP, or Peruvian Institute of Mine Engineers). The 31st edition of the convention, billed as the ?world?s largest mining convention? by the IIMP, this event was led by Abraham Chahuan CEO of Antamina and Romulo Mucho (SME member) as president of IIMP, attracted about 118,000 participants from more than 48 countries. This was more than the anticipated 75,000 attendance and well past the 51,000 people who attended the 2011 convention. The last edition of PERUMIN was led by the CEO of Compañía Minera Antamina, Abraham Chahuan and Rómulo Mucho (SME member) and representative of the IIMP. The event attracted more than 1,000 journalists from all over the world, the IIMP said. A total of 2,213 booths from equipment and machinery supplying companies from the five continents were present at the Mining Technology Exhibition (Extemin), including companies from the United States, Canada, China, South Africa, Germany, Australia, Brazil and Chile, among others. The convention has grown so large in recent years, that the IIMP shifted its location from Tecsup vocational school in Arequipa to the Cerro Juli Convention Center. The venue is 116 percent larger than Tecsup, the IIMP reported, covering about 20 ha (40 acres). It was reported by Latinomineria magazine that about 10 million Peruvian soles were invested in the new venue to create a world-class events center. It was also estimated that the event generated more than 234 million soles to Arequipa?s economy.

Thermovision monitoring of surface temperature has been examined for the purpose of detection of spontaneous combustion of early stage. Measurements were carried out in bituminous and subbituminous coal mines. It was found that surface temperature heterogenities can be considered as common phenomenon in mine openings. However, the most of the observed temperature heterogenities were not connected with coal spontaneous combustion of early stage. These, so called [non-spontaneous combustion] temperature heterogenities in surface of mine openings were found to be caused by: l. Different conditions of heat transfer between opening surface and air stream; 2. Low temperature (natural) oxidation of coal; 3. Dissipated heat loses of working machine. Sites of early stage spontaneous combustion of coal were characterized by: 1. More significant, local rise in surface temperature comparing with low temperature coal oxidation; 2. Evolution of carbon monoxide with local concentration near the surface of such site more than about 15 ppm (bituminous coals) or 30 ppm (subbituminous coals). INTRODUCTION Mine fires are a serious hazard to life and result in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Thus, great attention is paid to investigation of new methods enabling already early detection of self-heating of coal. The earlier a fire is observed, the easier would it be to deal with. Detection methods used in coal mines are mainly based on: 1. [Mine air analysis]. Changes in composition of mine air are examined. Products of spontaneous heating of coal, not being present in mine air under normal conditions, are considered as indicators of anomalous behaviour of coal (carbon monoxide, unsaturated hydrocarbons) (Mackenzie-Wood and Strang, 1990). 2. [Temperature measurements]. Sites of higher temperature level comparing surroundings are looking for underground using various direct or indirect methods of temperature measurements. This paper summarizes experience from thermovision monitoring, as one of the latest indirect temperature measurement technique, used for the purpose of early detection of self-heating of coal in mine openings. INFRARED THERMOVISION Infrared thermovision device of AGEMA Infrared systems AB (Sweden) was used for the in situ measurements. The constant value of emissivity factor, 0.95, was pre-set as the most probable level of emissivities of coal and rocks in mine conditions.

An ore-pass is an underground conduit used to transfer ore from one level of a mine to another. This method of transportation depends on the elevation energy only; therefore, it has very low operating cost. However, two inherent problems may hamper this process: (1) hang-ups of interlocked pieces and (2) a sudden release of trapped air from the ore-pass (belching). These events can create unsafe conditions with the potential for catastrophic consequences. This paper presents a summary of CFD modeling studies that were formulated to investigate the pressure build-up and belching of dust and rock particles from long ore-passes. The models were calibrated against field data collected from an actual ore-pass system and used to predict the airflow-pressure distributions in the mine for various ore feed rates and ore-pass geometries. P.T. Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg ore-pass system (240,000 tpd capacity) was used for this purpose. This system comprises of four active ore-passes, with each being more than 600 m in vertical length.
