The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are sometimes large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy/Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study currently underway at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County), West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar retreat mining. The initial findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water bevels at shallower depths.

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. Some of the mineral deposits that are being processed today, and especially those expected to be processed in the future, have relatively low compositions of the valuable mineral. With these low-grade ores, it is necessary to be able to design processes that are sufficiently low-cost to permit exploitation. One approach to minimizing the capital and operating costs for these processes is to use the capabilities of computer process simulation in the design phase of development, to make important technical and economic decisions regarding the evaluation of alternative process flow schemes, the selection of equipment and the choice of operating conditions. There are mathematical simulation models for most mineral processing operations, including several each for size reduction, size classification and mineral separations. To be able to tie these individual operating models together in an integrated mineral process simulation, however, it is important, in fact in some cases essential, that there be a model which describes how the mineral system responds to size reduction in making the liberated valuable and waste mineral particles available for concentration or rejection operations and the locked particles available for possible recirculation. This, then, is the role played by the mineral liberation model, showing the relationship between particle size, quantity and composition throughout the process.

The United States began exporting coal in the late 1800'5, at first in very small quantities to Canada and beginning in 1897 and 1896, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War One when shipments overseas increased from the 8 million tons per year level to 22 million tons. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War 11 when the United States again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the United States was the only country able to supply the large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the U. S. coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 42.5 million tons in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 25 -2 million tons of coal to Canada In that year for a total export of 68.7 million tons. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 76 .4 million tons- -a high I might add that has not been reached since.

"Information diffusion potential of a social media user affects how quickly information about a mineral project can diffuse through that user. If management can use social media and network analysis, in community engagement program, to understand how fast and how far information will diffuse to communities and followers of particular social media users, it can selectively focus on the most influential users. This paper proposes a method to examine the information diffusion potential of social media accounts. The work uses Gephi, an open source software, to extract and analyze data from different Twitter handles to predict their information diffusion potential. The work uses case studies of real Twitter users (e.g. mining news organizations and bloggers) associated with mining to illustrate the approach. The case study results show that there are significant disparities in information diffusion potential that will demand selective attention. This research will help mines develop effective social media engagement strategies. INTRODUCTION The mineral industry provides raw material for industrial activity to support our society (Martens and Rattmann, 2001). Mines have changed conventional mining practices to sustainable ones because of the negative impacts of mining and increased public awareness (Wang et al 2016). The concept of sustainable mining is getting mature as stakeholders (e.g., governments, investors and host communities) are getting involved in mining projects (World Economic Forum, 2014). The failure of mining companies to address the demands of these stakeholders might result in failure to acquire social license to operate (Thomson and Boutilier, 2011). The social license to operate (SLO), if granted, is mutually beneficial to all stakeholders. Mines prefer being granted SLO and keeping it to avoid any kind of social unrest due to their operation (Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014). Mining communities can grant different levels of SLO; ranging from withholding SLO to psychologically identifying with the project (Joyce and Thomson, 2000; Thomsan and Boutilier, 2011). Most of the previous work to understand community perceptions and SLO in mining is generally qualitative (ICMM, 2012a; Thomson and Boutilier, 2011; Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014; IFC, 2014). In particular, there is limited work on how community perceptions change over time due to information diffusion (Boateng and Awuah-Offei, 2017). However, SLO changes with respect to time (Yates and Horvath, 2013), which can result in risks that are not easy to predict. Mine managers and engineers have a desire to understand these changes so as to mitigate these risks (Que and Awuah-Offei, 2014; Que et al., 2015)."

Coal production in the United States in 2009 de-creased to 972.8 Mt (1,072.8 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This is a decline of 8.5 percent, or 90 Mt (99.1 million st) below the 2008 record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.8 million st) (Table 1). In 2009, U.S. coal consumption decreased in all sectors while total coal stocks increased for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2009 was lower by 10 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 30.6 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 16.6 percent. The commercial and institutional sector (which prior to 2008 had been called ?residential and commercial?) is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors and it declined by 8.4 percent in 2009. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports fell from the 2008 levels, while coal imports decreased for a second year in a row. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of the domestic economic conditions combined with the weather in 2009, which resulted in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2009. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 94-Mt (104-million st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the non-electricity sector decreased by 20.1 percent to a level of 57.9 Mt (63.9 million st). The international coal markets for most of 2009 were reflective of a worldwide economic slowdown. U.S. coal exports and imports both declined for the year. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.6 Mt (59.1 million st). This is a decrease of 20.3 Mt (22.4 million st) from the 2008 level.

In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

Vanadium is a transition metal, ductile and silver-gray. It is harder than most metals and steels and it has a good resistance to corrosion. It is stable against alkalis and sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Vanadium is oxidized in air at about 660° C (1,220° F), although an oxide layer forms even at room temperature. The chemistry of vanadium is noteworthy for the accessibility of the four adjacent oxidation states, 2-5. In aqueous solution, the colors are lilac V2+, green V3+, blue VO2+ and, at high pH, yellow VO42-. Considered to be as abundant as zinc, metallic vanadium is not found in nature, but it is known to exist in about 65 different minerals. Economically significant examples include patronite (VS4), vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl), associated to the uranium mineral carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2?3H2O) and in a vanadium mica called roscoelite K(V3+,Al,Mg)[(Si,Al)4O10] (OH)2. Other important vanadium ore oxides are montroseite (V,Fe)O(OH) and corvusite (Na,Ca,K)V8O2.4H2O. Much of the world?s vanadium mine production comes from magnetite-hosted deposits and, to a lesser extent, sedimentary-hosted sandstone.

The impact of fatigue is seen not only in its effect on the job performance of haul truck operators but also on the health of the operator and the productivity at the mine site. Its impact can even extend outside of the mine site to the health and well-being of the surrounding community (Fourie et al., 2010). In this paper, a case study of a small, surface mining organization is presented. The goal is to highlight the fatigue risk management system implemented at the studied mine site. Mine safety personnel who were interviewed discuss the changes made to the infrastructure of the mine, to administrative areas such as the number of shifts and the use of vacation time, as well as the implementation of new technology into haulage vehicles. This paper reviews how these changes are supported in the research literature.

"In the conceptual stages of engineering, benchmarking and empirical ratios are commonly the only references for estimating the production rate of greenfield projects. For underground mining projects, the lack of similar cases often makes the comparison difficult due to each project’s unique geology, rock quality or other singular characteristic. This paper discusses an analytical alternative for determining the maximum achievable production rate for underground stoping mining by modeling production as a continuous process. The results show that long-term maximum capacity depends exclusively on the achievable development rate and the development intensity of the design. In operations constrained by backfill, the development rate could be limited by the backfilling rate. Extraction rate and stope size only have impacts on capacity estimates during the ramp-up period.These findings allow shaping of the maximum capacity profile of a project. They can be used as a tool for quick assessment of conceptual capacities, and sensitivities of mining rates. Benchmarking tests compared favorably with projects, mines in operation and scheduling exercises. IntroductionA key consideration in the value proposition of a mining project is its capacity or production rate (Tatman, 2001). At a conceptual level, it is common practice to refer to empirical references (Taylor, 1986; Long, 2009), rules of thumb (de la Vergne, 2014), benchmark ing studies or consultant experience to estimate or validate a target value. There is, however, a lack of analytical methodology to guide an early estimate of the maximum capacity.Araneda and Gaete (2004) presented an interesting mathematical approach to estimate the capacity of panel caving mines. Using a continuous model, they confirmed that the mine capacity is essentially determined by the rate of area incorporation, in terms of area per period, and ore column height. This simple relationship has been confirmed by multiple detailed scheduling works"

Modern mining operations are increasingly affected by complex economic factors. Broad and rapid fluctuations in metal prices, rising operating costs, socio-political trends and the inherent technical difficulties encountered in most operations, all can combine to quickly change once-profitable ventures into money-losing propositions. Accurate knowledge of metal inventories during all phases of an operation has become essential to wise management decision-making. This paper reviews key elements of metallurgical accounting: sampling theory, measurement technology and computerized data adjustment. Application of current technology to the reconciliation of a hypothetical operation is discussed.

The combination of high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) image analysis and Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) simulations has demonstrated the ability to describe real multiphase flow problems in fine coal filtration. The single component multiphase flow He-Chen-Zhang LBM model was used to simulate filtration with actual HRXMT images of pore network structures produced in filtration experiments. The analysis performed on coal, silica, and glass bead filter cakes showed that particle shape and wettability are two of the most important factors in the retention of moisture during filtration.

Waste treatment in the mining industry is by no means a new problem to this field. In a sense, the entire process from ore to finished product is one of waste treatment - the separation of a relatively minor quantity of desired component from valueless material. Where it has been necess-ary or economical to practice conventional waste treatment or pollution control methods, such as dust collection, water recovery from tailings, or impounding of residues for future treatment, this has been done. Generally the containment of hazardous pollutants such as arsenic and cyanide also has been followed in modern times. But it is only recently, with the public outcry for the elimination of all forms of pollution, "that the industry has been forced to solve what often appears to be a myriad of difficult and costly waste treatment problems, or be faced with the alternative of closing down the operation. It is the objective of this paper to describe new as well as conventional approaches to these problems, specifically as might be applicable to liquid-solids separation methods. Host wastes in the industry are present either as solutions or slurries, or can be most advantageously handled by conversion to this form, such as in scrubbing noxious gases and dusts with water. Separation of the solids and purification of the aqueous effluents are, therefore, often the principle problems.

"A commercially available through-the-earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an underground coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This field study was conducted as part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems. The mine detailed in this paper was idled at the time of the study, which provided the nearest practical representation of a postevent mine shutdown environment. For this study, surface-to-underground and undergroundto- surface communications were tested. Standard deployments of the TTE system using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations. Other arrangements of the units yielded mixed results. Future experimentation is planned to further examine the phenomena observed at this mine IntroductionThe ability to establish effective communication between surface and underground personnel after a mine event is essential for both evacuation and rescue efforts. Current wireless underground communication technologies are reliant on intermediary physical infrastructure, such as antennas and repeaters, to enable underground communications. As such, communications are easily disabled during a mine event because of the inherent vulnerabilities to physical damage (Damiano, 2012; National Academy of Engineers, 1970; Yenchek et al., 2011). A true emergency communications system would function regardless of a mine’s physical state. Through-the-earth (TTE) wireless communication technology only requires the use of a single transmitter and a single receiver to achieve point-to-point communication through solid strata. With this capability, TTE systems have the potential to serve as a true emergency communications platform."

Union Carbide_ began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.040% U308 were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leach project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on-site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. They were most generous in allowing us to visit their site, answering our questions, and were helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. They confirmed our belief that, it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for. conventional milling. Based largely on what we had learned from Western Nuclear's experience, a program was set up involving a laboratory study to determine the characteristics of the mineral stockpiles as related to heap leaching and to conduct a pilot heap leach adjoining our Gas Hills mill. Basically, the pilot heap construction and leach procedure were similar to those described in the literature(1,2) with certain modifications to permit detailed monitoring of the operation. In May, '1972, the decision was made to construct a test heap. The UCC plant at Gas Hills, Wyoming was selected as the most appropriate site for the follow¬ing reasons:

Coal dust produced during the mining process is a prime explosion hazard in underground coal mines. To inert the coal dust and prevent a catastrophic propagating dust explosion, rock dust is applied to the roof, ribs, and floor surfaces of mine entries. Currently, one determination of whether a mine is adequately protected from the coal dust explosion hazard is made by analyzing collected mine dust samples for percent total incombustible content (% TIC). A minimum of 80% TIC is required per 30 CFR 75.403. The as-received moisture of the dust sample is included in the % TIC. Moisture and humidity within a coal mine vary greatly with the seasons, with explosions occurring more frequently during dry winter months. This paper will discuss the fluctuations of the as-received moisture content of the mine dust samples collected by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors in 2010 and the observed fluctuations of the moisture content of rock dust within the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mining Safety and Health Research Bruceton Experimental Mine and the Safety Research Coal Mine over a one-year period.
