Efficient design of grinding circuits for efficient production of ultrafine material requires rapid feedback of information concerning the fineness of material leaving the grinding device. Generating this information requires efficient sampling and adequate rapid characterization of the material leaving the grinding machinery. Recent developments-in electrooptic inspection of dry end wet material leaving a grinding device are critically reviewed. New methods for characterizing ultrafines are discussed. A rapid operating automated cybernetic (intelligent) permeability device for automatic control of grinding circuits using Blaine index and other fineness indices is described.

The Anderson Dam Tunnel Project is a high-priority, urgent project under construction by the Santa Clara Valley Water District in California. The project will provide a new low-level outlet for the Anderson Reservoir enabling the seismic retrofit of the Anderson Dam as mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This paper describes planning for construction of the tunnel through the dam’s right abutment crossing several faults in challenging and variable soft and hard ground conditions. The construction methods include SEM, hard rock drill and blast techniques, and a mechanized 8-foot (2.5 m) diameter microtunneled lake tap.

A digital simulator of classification and grinding circuits is used to evaluate the performances of various flowsheets. For a given flowsheet configuration, unit processes dimensions and operating conditions, the simulator calculates the steady-state values of the process variables. A supervisory algorithm is implemented in the simulator to determine the conditions which meet the required criterion on operation, tonnage and product quality. Calculation illustrations are proposed for the design of wet and dry grinding circuits. The performances of various arrangements of cement clinker and sulphide ore grinding flowsheets are evaluated and discussed.

The oxygen consumption method utilises an oxygen sensor to monitor the gas-phase oxygen concentrations in sealed chambers filled with reactive waste rock with subsequent confirmation of the oxygen content by gas chromatography. Results of experiments utilising low sulphide (<0.5w1%) waste rock yielded reproducible oxygen consumption rates on the order of 10-10 mol O2.kg-1. s-1. Petrographic analysis of the waste rock material indicated that the dominant sulphide mineral is pyrite (FeS2). Assuming a stoichiometry of 1.75 moles of O2 per mole of SO4 sulphate release rates were inferred to be between 6 and 18 mg SO4 kg-1 wk-1 Typically these results are 2 to 3 times greater than measured sulphate release rates from humidity cells. Our findings suggest that this techniques offers a rapid. cost efficient method for determining sulphate release rates in waste rock piles, even at low sulphide concentrations.

Tunnel inspections have traditionally been carried out manually by inspectors writing up observations and taking photos of defects. The results from the inspection and the defects observed are dependent upon the rigor of the inspectors and may be subject to repeatability and consistency issues and is often time consuming with elevated health and safety risks. This paper will discuss work that is being carried out in developing and implementing an innovative hardware and software solution integrating machine learning to automate the process of capturing objective tunnel condition information, offering cost and programme savings as well as health and safety improvements

INTRODUCTION The mining, extraction and refining of metals into useful materials is an honorable profession with an ancient and productive history. Civilizations have long depended upon metals for their implements, structures and machinery necessary for survival, growth, and development. Today, as in the future, metals and minerals are essential to the progress of mankind as we approach the 21st century with technologies and concepts that will require new concepts and production from the metal mining and processing industries. Today is the tomorrow we talked about yesterday and the implementation of new ideas is essential if we are to achieve "Frontier Technology in Mineral Processing". Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art mining, processing, smelting and refining methods historically employed were less than desirable environmentally, which has caused todays public to view the metal mining and processing industry with concern. Presently the ancient rock and chat tips connected with old Roman lead-zinc mines which were worked in Wales are causing stream contamination problems that must be corrected at considerable expense to the local governmental agencies (Firth, J.N.M., et al., 1981). However, improved progress has been made and the environmental control and clean-up procedures utilized by modern lead-zinc operations in the "Viburnum Trend" or "New Lead Belt" of South East Missouri may serve as a model to illustrate how alternative technologies, environmental concerns and cooperative efforts contribute to efficient mineral production within the confines of a U.S. National Forest region without significant environmental impacts. This area received international attention when it was opened within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest in the mid 1960&apos;s. By 1970 it ranked first in the world by producing 432,576 short tons of lead ore and has since continued in this position producing 451,153 short tons of lead ore in 1983 representing 91% of the total United States lead production (U.S. Bureau of idines, 1983). This production comes from a mining area approximately 40 miles long by 10 miles wide extending in a north-south direction. Geologically the lead is disseminated throughout the Cambrain age Bonneterre Formation, mostly a dolomite, at depths ranging from 700 to 1200 ft. (213.4 to 365.8 m). Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chaleopyrite (copper) and silver being recovered as economic co-products. This new mining development in one of Missouri is most scenic areas could have led to a classic confrontation between industries and environmentalists. Instead, through the cooperation of industries, governmental agencies and university researchers, the Ozark environment has been protected, and may serve as a model for future coexistence of the mineral industry with the environment. Cooperative Program Development As early as 1965 five new mines and two lead smelters were being prepared for production and environmental concern was an essential part of that planning. All the mining companies became acquainted with representatives of the various federal and state agencies and scientists from the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). During the next six years, St. Joe Minerals Corporation, American Metal Climax, Inc., Cominco American Incorporated, Ozark Lead Company (Kennecott) and American Smelting and Refining Company participated in cooperative research efforts. The companies also participated in information exchange meetings, the development of improved analytical methods and the utilization of research findings in the modification or construction of pollution-abatement facilities. Early on research was carried out to determine background values and to establish natural baselines of trace metals in the surrounding environment. The unusual topography and drainage pattern of the mining area were helpful since it was possible to establish control sites and test sites below individual mine-mill operations to study waste-water effects on the receiving streams. "Image-based rock fragmentation sensing in mines and quarries includes an important rock boundary delineation step, commonly referred to as rock segmentation. This paper presents an artificial intelligence-based solution to this challenge. The proposed technique encodes prior knowledge of previously analyzed images into mathematical/statistical models. Human-labeled images are used as inputs to train neural networks through an optimization process. The networks can then be used in real time for rock delineation. To build the models, special deep artificial neural networks are used as a pixel classifier. The proposed classifier labels each pixel (edge, rock or fine) by analyzing a plurality of pixels within the image. Advances in machine learning allow the network to contain many parameters. The increased number of parameters is a strong factor in the classifier’s ability to correctly classify each pixel. Deep learning-based segmentation, combined with 3D imaging followed by post processing, provides a unified fragmentation sensing solution. Results from automatic segmentation are compared to human labeled segmentation using the percentage passing curves for 64 rock images. INTRODUCTION Mines and quarries can see significant productivity and performance benefits by controlling material sizes (McKee, Chitmobo, & Morrell, 1995; Sellers & Gumede, 2012). During the past decade, image-based fragmentation analysis has been applied to estimate rock size distributions in order to optimize procedures in mines and quarries. Using a roving camera and operator assisted analysis Maerz, Franklin, and Coursen (1987) measured the size distribution of the blasted rock and eliminated the need for manual sieve analysis. Since then, many others have introduced automated and manual methods for fragmentation analysis and improved upon existing approaches (Girdner, Kemeny, Srikant, & McGill, 1996; Smith & Kemeny, 1993; Palangio, Palangio, & Maerz, 2005; Tafazoli & Ziraknejad, 2009; Raina, 2013). In image-based fragmentation, rock boundaries are identified in the image, and an image scaling is applied to transform rock pixel sizes into real world dimensions. Usually geometric references, such as regularly shaped objects (discs and basketballs) (Siddigui, Ali Shah, & Behan, 2009), or the known size of an excavator bucket (Zeng, Chow, Baumann, & Tafazoli, 2012), are used to determine the proper scaling factor. In recent years, 3D imaging and sensing have also been incorporated to improve rock delineation. Specific methods include using camera-laser combinations and stereo imaging to measure rock fragmentation on conveyor belts (Noy, 2013; Thurley, 2013; Dislaire, Illing, Laurent, & Pirard, 2013) as well as portable fragmentation analysis devices with 3D imaging sensors (Sameti, et al., 2014)."

Commercially mined calcium carbonate is normally found near the surface in the United States. It is nun& either by open pit or underground methods, depending upon its geologic setting. Processing ranges from simple crushing to the more sophisticated ultrafine processes. Intermediate steps are pulverizing, screening, beneficiation, classification, fine and ultrafine grinding, and surface treating. These processes are performed both dry and/or wet resulting in powdered or slurry end products.

The prime movers of the Centralia Project, the surface coal mine and the power plant, private utilities are very aware of public attitudes. They have established and maintain the reputation for leadership in public service and are genuinely concerned that this project initiate the pro-grams and design the hardware to answer the question :What will be the impact of the mine and the plant on the physical environment, i.e., the air, soil and the water." So in the beginning almost as soon as the decision had been made to go ahead with the project, officials of the two private utilities, Washington Water Power and Pacific Power & Light went on record and publicly stated time and again that the overall approach of the Operators would be to do all that was reasonably possible to safeguard the environment. This attitude became part of the thinking of the project planners, part of the design of the power plant and part of the plan for the surface mine. The coal to be mined is from the Skookumchuck formation. The formation is Late Eocene and is made up of poorly consolidated marine and non-marine deposits. The major overburden removal equipment is a bucket-wheel excavator -conveyor system and a 56 yard dragline. Mining of the coal will be done with truck and shovel. The coal is processed, washed and crushed to 1 ¼ " for delivery to the power plant. The muddy water created by the washing process is chemically treated and the solids removed by a thickener-vacuum filter system.

Rock bolting as a method of support continues to increase with applications in many other industries in addition to mining. Nevertheless, with nearly 55,000,000 roof bolts installed in coal mines alone last year, this remains as the single greatest use. While bolts have frequently supported ground where conventional timbering could not, there are relatively few design criteria; and trial-and-error procedures prevail. Furthermore, development of suitable instrumentation that is simple to install and readout, sensitive, durable, reliable, safe and economical in evaluating the effectiveness of a bolt over long periods of time lags behind. Therefore, the pull test continues to be the most popular method of evaluating the applicability of a certain type of roof bolt under specific installation conditions. At Penn State in the Department of Mining, research has been conducted for a number of years to measure bleedoff in carefully controlled laboratory experiments as well as in underground investigations.1,2,3,4 Unfortunately, most of the instrumentation developed has been primarily suitable only for research purposes, not possessing all of the aforementioned characteristics desirable for routine underground use. Other groups also have met with restricted success. Therefore, while relatively crude, the torque wrench continues to remain as the most widely used load measuring device. While both field and laboratory tests continue to be conducted, analytical analyses are attempted to discover the more important design parameters in order that more efficient anchorage might be devised.

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is the method of choice used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970’s, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6560 Mm3/d (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2832 m3/d (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm3/d (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) laboratory experiments have been conducted using cylindrical salt cores from the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP). TDR has been used as an instrumentation technique to quantify the type and magnitude of rock mass deformation. Laboratory shear and tensile tests were conducted to calibrate measured deformation versus changes in reflected waveforms. Coaxial cables grouted within rock cores were crimped to produce localized reference defects. The evaluation of waveform characteristics produced during rock deformation experiments shows a good correlation of cable response to both shear and extension of the salt

The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres&apos; only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or &apos;white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.

The AMAX of Canada Limited Kitsault mine is located approximately 150 kilometers, by air, north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia at the head end of A1 ice Arm, just east of the southern tip of the Alaskan Panhandle. It is presently only accessible by sea or air, although a road is being constructed by the company which will provide access to Terrace, a commercial centre with a population of about 15,000. The topography is typically coastal mountainous with peaks rising to 2,100 meters around the head end of the inlet. The concentrator is at an elevation of 515 meters with the mine at 630 meters. This open pit molybdenum mine was previously operated between 1968 and 1972 by British Columbia Molybdenum Limited, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation. AMAX of Canada Limited has spent $194 million to refurbish and expand this operation.

Utilization of x-ray diffraction data for mineral identification has been well documented and accepted as an analytical tool in industrial and research organizations. However, the search for new methods to minimize errors affecting measured reflection intensities is being carried out by all concerned. Recent application of computer capability has greatly reduced the time required in handling data for mineral analysis and has increased the capability of accepting more data for greater precision. The purpose of this communication is (1) to describe the concept of cross-power in XRD analysis, and (2) to show that direct comparison analysis for multiphase systems has improved analytical accuracy when all available x-ray diffraction data are used in conjunction with high speed data processing by computer.

The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer&apos;s machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

The propensity of coal spontaneous combustion can be evaluated using various laboratory testing methods, such as R70 adiabatic tests, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) tests and critical self-heating temperature (CSHT) methods. Each of the methods has its unique characteristics and index for classifying the propensity of self-ignition of coals. Accountable relationships among the propensity indices of different methods should be established. Using the newly established R70 and TGA testing setups in our ventilation laboratory, samples from U.S. coal mines have been collected and tested. The TGA is a relatively new quantitative method. A test can be conducted in a relatively short time, within about one and a half hours, compared to the adiabatic tests. The temperature and weight of the sample can be measured with high precision and then used to determine the activation energy of the coal, which is a good indicator of the potential for self-heating. Under a specific experimental design, the TGA technique could perform the proximate analysis for determining coal quality parameters (e.g., moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash content). These parameters can be used in an empirical equation for assessing the potential for coal self-ignition. The trend of activation energies determined using TGA techniques is reasonably consistent with the trend of activation energies determined using adiabatic tests. As a case study, a comparative analysis of these two methods for determining activation energy was made on coal samples collected from Indiana. The kinetics of the spontaneous combustion mechanism has been explained. If the functional groups of a coal such as hydroxyl (-OH), carboxyl (-COOH), methyl (-CH3), etc., activate more easily with a small amount of activation energy at a relatively low temperature, the coal will have a higher potential for self-heating. With the kinetic and coal quality parameters determined by the TGA setup, it has been found that the coal with a low potential for self-ignition has low self-heating rate, a high activation energy and a high minimum self-heating temperature.

Operational excellence is generally known as a management system integrated across critical functions that is geared towards continually improving operational performance. Functional areas such as health, environment and safety, quality and human resources are the focus of many corporate-wide operational excellence programs. Operational excellence also focuses on improving areas such as customer orientation, employee empowerment as well as process, and systems optimization. It is widely viewed as critical to sustaining business performance improvement. Although it is difficult to find a universally accepted definition, or even common foundation in many respects, operational excellence remains a popular term in the business world. Many organizations have developed their own version of organization excellence, influenced by such individual factors, other similar institutions or even third-party service providers. A mining organization is no different from other organizations in that adopting and implementing effective operational excellence programs can dramatically improve business execution and performance across regional or global interests. This paper brings together various perspectives of operational excellence and reconciles them for a useful composite for the mining industry. While most agree that operational excellence should include normal functions in a manufacturing operation such as production, maintenance and engineering and processes such as quality, environmental and continuous improvement, many other factors for operational excellence seem to vary from perspective to perspective. Thus, programs that manufacturers engage in may seem the same, but may, in fact, be different in key areas. This may affect organizational performance in tangible ways. Management must buy into the company?s definition of operational excellence and be dedicated to achieving it. A review of many of the existing definitions of operational excellence, explicit or embedded as part of a program, seems to yield the following common factors: ? It should help organizations better execute their processes and services. ? It should be geared towards improving quality ? It requires that the various operations should be aligned with the overall enterprise strategy. ? It should be geared towards continuous improvement. A composite of operational excellence definitions suggest that it is: ? Geared towards helping the organization achieve sustained profitability; ? tied to strategic alignment and business objectives; ? tied to solid investment strategies; ? integrated as part of the culture, process, time plan and performance; ? a relevant performance measurement system; ? extended to include all aspects of the supply chain (including external suppliers); ? integrated with health, safety and environmental (HSE) aspects. And, while the pursuit of operational excellence intuitively suggests that businesses should improve, it is very difficult to achieve given the difficult challenges facing companies today. Mining businesses face numerous pressures to perform in a global marketplace such as demand, energy cost, variable cost and pricing fluctuations as well as infrastructure challenges to further confound the environment. As part of its goal of helping maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the U.S. Department of the Interior&apos;s Bureau of Mines is evaluating alternative technologies to treat oxidized taconites. Since process control is an essential element in the application of these process technologies, research was performed with a prototype monitoring system. A Californium-252 neutron source and a thermal neutron capture- gamma ray spectra analysis method was utilized to measure the amount of iron and the percent solids in the process slurries. The concentrate and tailing streams in a 410-kilogram-per-hour (900- pound-per-hour) pilot plant employing a selective flocculation and cationic flotation process were monitored. The results obtained showed that the thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reaction can be used to provide process control parameters.

Overshot loaders are loading machines which fill a front-mounted bucket by crowding and bucket lifting, passing the loaded bucket over the machine and throw¬ing the load into a haulage unit to the rear. The load is retained in the bucket as the load mass is accelerated in its path over the machine. At the point of discharge, the bucket is stopped suddenly and the load leaves the bucket, following the throw trajectory past the rear of the loader. Fig. 1 shows a typical overshot loader of this type. Overshot loaders were developed for loading in nar¬row drift headings and drawpoints, where it is impossible to place or pass a haulage unit alongside the loader. Haulage access is to the rear of all overshot loaders. The first overshot loader was developed in the early 1930s. The early machines were rail-mounted, air¬powered, and had small loading capacities. To this day, the same basic design configuration exists, and all suc¬cessful overshot loaders still use compressed air. Bucket sizes range from 0.14 to 0.59 m3 (5 to 21 cu ft). The most commonly used machines are rail-mounted, al¬though crawler versions are popular for special applica¬tions, particularly shaft sinking. Rubber-tired machines have found some application where a greater travel distance is required between the loading and discharge points. CONDITIONS INFLUENCING APPLICATION Roadway Type Rail-mounted loaders are used where soft bottom requires rail support or where the long haul is ac¬complished with rail. This situation usually occurs in civil tunnels or in mine drifts that will continue to utilize rail-bound main haulage after development work is completed. Crawler and rubber-tire mounted loaders are used where the roadway surface is rough and lateral travel beyond the range of rail-bound machines is required. Work Area Dimensions The largest rail-bound loaders can clean roadways as wide as 4 m (13 ft) from a single track. Wider headings require multiple trackage. Headroom require¬ments are dependent upon the path described by the bucket as it passes over the machine. The largest over¬shot loader requires approximately 3.4 m (11 ft) of headroom. It follows that the largest heading that can be driven by overshot loaders from a single set of rails is approximately 4 m (13 ft) wide and a minimum of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) high above the rail. The smallest rail-bound loaders can work efficiently in headings as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) wide by 1.8 m (6 ft) high above the rail.
