Diesel fuel usage in the mining industry continues to escalate. This is because approximately 60 percent of all mined materials are surface extracted by large equipment using diesel fuel, which continues to increase in cost per gallon. For example, coal mining uses large equipment such as wheel loaders, wheel dozers, draglines and [ ] dredgers. In one year, three of the largest U.S. coal mining operations consumed approximately 567 million to 852 million L (150 million to 225 million gal) of diesel. At an approximate cost average of $3.25/gal the expenditure on diesel is $487 million to $731 million per year. So, are there any solutions that could reduce this cost burden? Yes, there are. Coal mining companies can extract less ore; use more efficient extracting equipment that consumes less fuel; wait for a significant reduction in the cost of fuel; or find and use technology that would create efficiencies that would lower the cost. Nanotechnology is one such technology that might provide the means to create the efficiencies that will significantly lower diesel fuel costs.

For the design of a coal mine and process plant, a comprehensive foundation of geologic information is essential. Historically, the development, collation, and use of this information for design have been costly and time consuming. With the application of a digital computer, however, the effort expended can be reduced and maximum effective use of the geologic information realized. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility and convenience of using a computer to Store and manipulate geologic data for use in mine and process plant design.

Although considerable progress has been made in the last decade in predicting surface subsidence over longwall panels, a number of important issues deserve further studies in order to improve the techniques and accuracy of subsidence predictions. Some of the problems are: (1) subsidence over the chain pillars between mined longwall panels; (2) subsidence development process after face stop due to either a vacation or the completion of a longwall panel; and (3) subsidence initiation and development process over the setup entry area in the initial stage of mining a longwall panel. In this paper, the measured data related to the targeted problems are presented, the data analysis techniques are briefly introduced, and some of the prediction methods developed based on the collected data are proposed. The proposed methods can be used as supplemental tools for the existing subsidence prediction models to improve their prediction accuracy.

The oxygen consumption method utilises an oxygen sensor to monitor the gas-phase oxygen concentrations in sealed chambers filled with reactive waste rock with subsequent confirmation of the oxygen content by gas chromatography. Results of experiments utilising low sulphide (<0.5w1%) waste rock yielded reproducible oxygen consumption rates on the order of 10-10 mol O2.kg-1. s-1. Petrographic analysis of the waste rock material indicated that the dominant sulphide mineral is pyrite (FeS2). Assuming a stoichiometry of 1.75 moles of O2 per mole of SO4 sulphate release rates were inferred to be between 6 and 18 mg SO4 kg-1 wk-1 Typically these results are 2 to 3 times greater than measured sulphate release rates from humidity cells. Our findings suggest that this techniques offers a rapid. cost efficient method for determining sulphate release rates in waste rock piles, even at low sulphide concentrations.

Predicting rockmass permeability is critical in evaluating various engineering designs, including estimating gas inflow to a longwall mine in the case of a hypothetical breach in the gas well. This study conducted field permeability measurements to validate a geomechanical model capable of predicting rockmass permeability during longwall mining. A series of slug permeability tests were conducted in an active mine in Pennsylvania. A model of the mine was constructed in 3DEC numerical modeling software, and permeabilities were calculated. The modeling results agreed well with the pre- and post-mining permeability measurements, showing the applicability of this tool to evaluate gas well stability near mine workings.

Efficient design of grinding circuits for efficient production of ultrafine material requires rapid feedback of information concerning the fineness of material leaving the grinding device. Generating this information requires efficient sampling and adequate rapid characterization of the material leaving the grinding machinery. Recent developments-in electrooptic inspection of dry end wet material leaving a grinding device are critically reviewed. New methods for characterizing ultrafines are discussed. A rapid operating automated cybernetic (intelligent) permeability device for automatic control of grinding circuits using Blaine index and other fineness indices is described.

A digital simulator of classification and grinding circuits is used to evaluate the performances of various flowsheets. For a given flowsheet configuration, unit processes dimensions and operating conditions, the simulator calculates the steady-state values of the process variables. A supervisory algorithm is implemented in the simulator to determine the conditions which meet the required criterion on operation, tonnage and product quality. Calculation illustrations are proposed for the design of wet and dry grinding circuits. The performances of various arrangements of cement clinker and sulphide ore grinding flowsheets are evaluated and discussed.

The Anderson Dam Tunnel Project is a high-priority, urgent project under construction by the Santa Clara Valley Water District in California. The project will provide a new low-level outlet for the Anderson Reservoir enabling the seismic retrofit of the Anderson Dam as mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This paper describes planning for construction of the tunnel through the dam’s right abutment crossing several faults in challenging and variable soft and hard ground conditions. The construction methods include SEM, hard rock drill and blast techniques, and a mechanized 8-foot (2.5 m) diameter microtunneled lake tap.

"Image-based rock fragmentation sensing in mines and quarries includes an important rock boundary delineation step, commonly referred to as rock segmentation. This paper presents an artificial intelligence-based solution to this challenge. The proposed technique encodes prior knowledge of previously analyzed images into mathematical/statistical models. Human-labeled images are used as inputs to train neural networks through an optimization process. The networks can then be used in real time for rock delineation. To build the models, special deep artificial neural networks are used as a pixel classifier. The proposed classifier labels each pixel (edge, rock or fine) by analyzing a plurality of pixels within the image. Advances in machine learning allow the network to contain many parameters. The increased number of parameters is a strong factor in the classifier’s ability to correctly classify each pixel. Deep learning-based segmentation, combined with 3D imaging followed by post processing, provides a unified fragmentation sensing solution. Results from automatic segmentation are compared to human labeled segmentation using the percentage passing curves for 64 rock images. INTRODUCTION Mines and quarries can see significant productivity and performance benefits by controlling material sizes (McKee, Chitmobo, & Morrell, 1995; Sellers & Gumede, 2012). During the past decade, image-based fragmentation analysis has been applied to estimate rock size distributions in order to optimize procedures in mines and quarries. Using a roving camera and operator assisted analysis Maerz, Franklin, and Coursen (1987) measured the size distribution of the blasted rock and eliminated the need for manual sieve analysis. Since then, many others have introduced automated and manual methods for fragmentation analysis and improved upon existing approaches (Girdner, Kemeny, Srikant, & McGill, 1996; Smith & Kemeny, 1993; Palangio, Palangio, & Maerz, 2005; Tafazoli & Ziraknejad, 2009; Raina, 2013). In image-based fragmentation, rock boundaries are identified in the image, and an image scaling is applied to transform rock pixel sizes into real world dimensions. Usually geometric references, such as regularly shaped objects (discs and basketballs) (Siddigui, Ali Shah, & Behan, 2009), or the known size of an excavator bucket (Zeng, Chow, Baumann, & Tafazoli, 2012), are used to determine the proper scaling factor. In recent years, 3D imaging and sensing have also been incorporated to improve rock delineation. Specific methods include using camera-laser combinations and stereo imaging to measure rock fragmentation on conveyor belts (Noy, 2013; Thurley, 2013; Dislaire, Illing, Laurent, & Pirard, 2013) as well as portable fragmentation analysis devices with 3D imaging sensors (Sameti, et al., 2014)."

Commercially mined calcium carbonate is normally found near the surface in the United States. It is nun& either by open pit or underground methods, depending upon its geologic setting. Processing ranges from simple crushing to the more sophisticated ultrafine processes. Intermediate steps are pulverizing, screening, beneficiation, classification, fine and ultrafine grinding, and surface treating. These processes are performed both dry and/or wet resulting in powdered or slurry end products.

This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta&apos;s Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine&apos;s life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta&apos;s Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

INTRODUCTION The mining, extraction and refining of metals into useful materials is an honorable profession with an ancient and productive history. Civilizations have long depended upon metals for their implements, structures and machinery necessary for survival, growth, and development. Today, as in the future, metals and minerals are essential to the progress of mankind as we approach the 21st century with technologies and concepts that will require new concepts and production from the metal mining and processing industries. Today is the tomorrow we talked about yesterday and the implementation of new ideas is essential if we are to achieve "Frontier Technology in Mineral Processing". Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art mining, processing, smelting and refining methods historically employed were less than desirable environmentally, which has caused todays public to view the metal mining and processing industry with concern. Presently the ancient rock and chat tips connected with old Roman lead-zinc mines which were worked in Wales are causing stream contamination problems that must be corrected at considerable expense to the local governmental agencies (Firth, J.N.M., et al., 1981). However, improved progress has been made and the environmental control and clean-up procedures utilized by modern lead-zinc operations in the "Viburnum Trend" or "New Lead Belt" of South East Missouri may serve as a model to illustrate how alternative technologies, environmental concerns and cooperative efforts contribute to efficient mineral production within the confines of a U.S. National Forest region without significant environmental impacts. This area received international attention when it was opened within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest in the mid 1960&apos;s. By 1970 it ranked first in the world by producing 432,576 short tons of lead ore and has since continued in this position producing 451,153 short tons of lead ore in 1983 representing 91% of the total United States lead production (U.S. Bureau of idines, 1983). This production comes from a mining area approximately 40 miles long by 10 miles wide extending in a north-south direction. Geologically the lead is disseminated throughout the Cambrain age Bonneterre Formation, mostly a dolomite, at depths ranging from 700 to 1200 ft. (213.4 to 365.8 m). Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chaleopyrite (copper) and silver being recovered as economic co-products. This new mining development in one of Missouri is most scenic areas could have led to a classic confrontation between industries and environmentalists. Instead, through the cooperation of industries, governmental agencies and university researchers, the Ozark environment has been protected, and may serve as a model for future coexistence of the mineral industry with the environment. Cooperative Program Development As early as 1965 five new mines and two lead smelters were being prepared for production and environmental concern was an essential part of that planning. All the mining companies became acquainted with representatives of the various federal and state agencies and scientists from the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). During the next six years, St. Joe Minerals Corporation, American Metal Climax, Inc., Cominco American Incorporated, Ozark Lead Company (Kennecott) and American Smelting and Refining Company participated in cooperative research efforts. The companies also participated in information exchange meetings, the development of improved analytical methods and the utilization of research findings in the modification or construction of pollution-abatement facilities. Early on research was carried out to determine background values and to establish natural baselines of trace metals in the surrounding environment. The unusual topography and drainage pattern of the mining area were helpful since it was possible to establish control sites and test sites below individual mine-mill operations to study waste-water effects on the receiving streams. The prime movers of the Centralia Project, the surface coal mine and the power plant, private utilities are very aware of public attitudes. They have established and maintain the reputation for leadership in public service and are genuinely concerned that this project initiate the pro-grams and design the hardware to answer the question :What will be the impact of the mine and the plant on the physical environment, i.e., the air, soil and the water." So in the beginning almost as soon as the decision had been made to go ahead with the project, officials of the two private utilities, Washington Water Power and Pacific Power & Light went on record and publicly stated time and again that the overall approach of the Operators would be to do all that was reasonably possible to safeguard the environment. This attitude became part of the thinking of the project planners, part of the design of the power plant and part of the plan for the surface mine. The coal to be mined is from the Skookumchuck formation. The formation is Late Eocene and is made up of poorly consolidated marine and non-marine deposits. The major overburden removal equipment is a bucket-wheel excavator -conveyor system and a 56 yard dragline. Mining of the coal will be done with truck and shovel. The coal is processed, washed and crushed to 1 ¼ " for delivery to the power plant. The muddy water created by the washing process is chemically treated and the solids removed by a thickener-vacuum filter system.

Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies and miners as well as the dilution of mine air contaminants and must stay open for many years. In this study, standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled and instrumented by researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

Rock bolting as a method of support continues to increase with applications in many other industries in addition to mining. Nevertheless, with nearly 55,000,000 roof bolts installed in coal mines alone last year, this remains as the single greatest use. While bolts have frequently supported ground where conventional timbering could not, there are relatively few design criteria; and trial-and-error procedures prevail. Furthermore, development of suitable instrumentation that is simple to install and readout, sensitive, durable, reliable, safe and economical in evaluating the effectiveness of a bolt over long periods of time lags behind. Therefore, the pull test continues to be the most popular method of evaluating the applicability of a certain type of roof bolt under specific installation conditions. At Penn State in the Department of Mining, research has been conducted for a number of years to measure bleedoff in carefully controlled laboratory experiments as well as in underground investigations.1,2,3,4 Unfortunately, most of the instrumentation developed has been primarily suitable only for research purposes, not possessing all of the aforementioned characteristics desirable for routine underground use. Other groups also have met with restricted success. Therefore, while relatively crude, the torque wrench continues to remain as the most widely used load measuring device. While both field and laboratory tests continue to be conducted, analytical analyses are attempted to discover the more important design parameters in order that more efficient anchorage might be devised.

Tunnel inspections have traditionally been carried out manually by inspectors writing up observations and taking photos of defects. The results from the inspection and the defects observed are dependent upon the rigor of the inspectors and may be subject to repeatability and consistency issues and is often time consuming with elevated health and safety risks. This paper will discuss work that is being carried out in developing and implementing an innovative hardware and software solution integrating machine learning to automate the process of capturing objective tunnel condition information, offering cost and programme savings as well as health and safety improvements

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is the method of choice used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970’s, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6560 Mm3/d (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2832 m3/d (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm3/d (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres&apos; only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or &apos;white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) laboratory experiments have been conducted using cylindrical salt cores from the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP). TDR has been used as an instrumentation technique to quantify the type and magnitude of rock mass deformation. Laboratory shear and tensile tests were conducted to calibrate measured deformation versus changes in reflected waveforms. Coaxial cables grouted within rock cores were crimped to produce localized reference defects. The evaluation of waveform characteristics produced during rock deformation experiments shows a good correlation of cable response to both shear and extension of the salt

The AMAX of Canada Limited Kitsault mine is located approximately 150 kilometers, by air, north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia at the head end of A1 ice Arm, just east of the southern tip of the Alaskan Panhandle. It is presently only accessible by sea or air, although a road is being constructed by the company which will provide access to Terrace, a commercial centre with a population of about 15,000. The topography is typically coastal mountainous with peaks rising to 2,100 meters around the head end of the inlet. The concentrator is at an elevation of 515 meters with the mine at 630 meters. This open pit molybdenum mine was previously operated between 1968 and 1972 by British Columbia Molybdenum Limited, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation. AMAX of Canada Limited has spent $194 million to refurbish and expand this operation.
