Sandstone and shale samples from the Morrison (Late Jurassic) and Dakota formations (Cretaceous) from northwestern New Mexico have been analyzed for the major elements Na, K, Fe and the trace elements Sc, Cr, Co, Rb, Sb, Cs, Ba, Hf, Ta, Th, iJ and the rare earth elements (REE) in whole rock and clay sized fractions by instrumental and delayed neutron activation analysis. The clay sized fraction clearly shows enrichment patterns and halo effects ; whereas, the whole rock fraction does not. Important elemental dispersion halos associated with uranium in sedimentary environments include the REE, Hf, and Sb. The distribution of these halos are due to a combination of complexation, chelation and the orignal paleoenvironments.

Modifying the hydrophobicity of clay is necessary to accommodate large mycotoxin molecules such as zearalenone (ZEN). In this study, tricaprylmethylammonium (TCMA) chloride and common corn oil were used to modify clay. The results indicate that more than 90 percent of ZEN could be removed using clays modified by TCMA and corn oil at acidic and neutral pH due to the expansion of intergallery spacing as a result of TCMA surfactant intercalation within the clay-forming layers. The removal percentage depends on the pH and amount of clay used. Complete removal can be achieved at acidic pH and small clay amount.

"From June 16 to 19, more than 1,400 tunneling and underground construction professionals gathered in Chicago, IL for the bienial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). There, they were greeted by a full technical program and an exciting exhibit hall that provided a comprehensive look at the world’s bustling tunneling and underground construction industry.The successful conference was a reflection of the industry itself, which is to say, busy. As much of the world has begun to focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment, the global tunneling industry has seen an uptick in infrastructure projects move from design-build to construction phase. With a global shift away from the use of fossil fuels, major cities around the world are looking to increase public transportation options, which leads to the need for more transportation tunnels. And as urban populations continue to grow, the need for clean water calls for more tunnels, and as urban footprints continue to expand, the need to increase and update combined sewage overflow tunnel grows with them.During two and a half days, more than 20 sessions covering all of these topics were presented at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, many to packed rooms in which every seat was taken and people were standing along the side and back walls.RETC is a biennial conference and one of the largest in the North America for the tunneling and underground construction industries. As such, it hosts a robust exhibit floor. This year 172 vendors occupied 205 booth spaces. The exhibit included everything from tunnel boring machine manufacturers, like Robbins and Herrenknecht, to the companies that supply all kinds of parts and services to the industry."

The coal industry in South Africa is briefly outlined. Test- work carried out on bulk samples of coal in the laboratory and used in the design of the Van Dyks Drift washery are described. Factors affecting the selection of equipment and the designed capacity of the plant are discussed. A description of the crushing plant, washery and load out section is given together with performance data obtained in the final acceptance tests. New features incorporated in the Van Dyks Drift plant and in more recent plants of the Group are outlined.

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

Underground blasting has many challenges. The primary aim of blast designers is to optimize drilling and blasting parameters to deal with the associated challenges. Optimizing these parameters is currently based on various rules of thumb, which have many site-specific limitations. Accordingly, computation of these parameters using empirical rock fragmentation predictors can be useful for blast designers. This paper presents the results of work on burden-spacing determination by back-calculation from the empirical Kuz-Ram model for underground stope ring blasting.

Critical mineral endowment of mine wastes in two mining districts in New Mexico (Copper Flat at Hillsboro and Carlisle-Center mines in the Steeple Rock district) will be characterized and estimated. “Beta-testing” of USGS procedures was performed. Potential critical minerals at these deposits include As, Bi, Te, Zn, Co, Ni, Mg, Mn, and fluorite. pH and particle size of samples were analyzed to determine weathering and migration potential of heavy metals. Soil pH was also measured to determine the potential for Acid Rock Drainage. The pH of the waste rock piles ranged from 3.66 to 5.67 which indicates fine- grained pyrite or sulfide oxidation. The samples collected from the tailings however, showed a different range of pH, from 6.30 to 8.62, probably due to the presence of carbonates. Difference in particle size fractions and its distribution along the slope are generally influenced by natural occurrences (e.g., gravity and pre-mining hydrothermal alteration) and operational activities such as material piling or dumping. Future work includes analyses of mineralogy and particle size correlation and estimation of critical mineral endowment of these mine wastes at New Mexico.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatally and nonfatally) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries can be prevented by the installation of roof screen. However, many coal mines are reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential savings in workers' compensation (W C) premiums that can be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by Illinois and Kentucky were investigated in this study. Using data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g., average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), baseline mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state's actual WC rate-setting formulas, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the total savings in WC costs after a three-year period. Annual savings in WC premiums ranged from $41,000 to $326,000 for the 67-person mine, and $96,000 to $843,000 for the 150-person mine. An economic analysis of the cost of a roof screening program at a 67-person mine was also conducted. The annual cost of a roof screening program here was estimated at $240,000. At this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

Filtration systems with disposable filter elements (DFEs) are used in the underground coal mining industry to control particulate matter emissions from diesel-powered permissible and nonpermissible coal mining equipment. This study was conducted in underground mine conditions to evaluate three types of high-temperature DFEs used in those filtration systems. The DFEs were evaluated for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. After an initial DFE degreening period, the filtration system with all three DFEs was found to be very effective at reducing total mass concentrations of aerosols in the mine air. The effectiveness of DFEs in filtering aerosol mass was found to be a function of the engine operating conditions. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on the performance of the DFE elements. The effectiveness of DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes rather than at low-load modes. Initial heating of certain DFEs resulted in visible white smoke and substantially elevated aerosol number concentrations. The effects of the DFEs on the total concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOX) were found to be minor. The NO2 fraction was found to be generally lower for the DFEs than for the muffler. The engine-out NO2 fraction of the total NOX was found to be substantially higher for low-load modes than for high-load modes..

A site-characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic assessment of rock mass properties is presented. The strategy, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock-failure process, entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing extreme value statistics and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and, field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass can be estimated by using this proposed method. The results of the analysis can be incorporated into the design of underground structures. Then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

In order to develop more accurate procedures for scale-up and design of semi-autogenous grinding mills through detailed mathematical models, a better understanding of the charge motion and rocklball segregation is needed. To achieve this a 0.61 m (2.0 ft) diam by 0.305m (1 .0ft) length plexiglas mill was constructed as a scale model of a commercial SAG mill. Rock motion in the rotating mill was simulated using various sizes of ceramic balls. Quantitative measurements of dynamic angle of repose, water and slurry motion, holdup and size segregation of the charge were taken. In addition, a video presentation (available to the public) was prepared to elucidate charge and water motion at various mill speeds, charge volumes, rocksize distribution, and flow rates.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations), even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of possible explosion pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mine seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble, in combination with a conventional mine seal, so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed and attenuated, and the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a “passive mine blast attenuator” (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals.

Domestic mining will not produce a significant portion of the manganese consumed in the United States unless new mining and processing techniques are implemented that will enable domestic lean ores to economically compete with rich foreign ores. One mining-processing technique that appears promising for certain deposits is in situ and/or heap leaching with aqueous SO2. Since leaching offers economic advantages of low capital costs, low operating costs, and short start-up times as well as environmental and safety improvements over conventional mining-processing, the Bureau of Mines studied the leachability of manganese deposits from several districts. Manganese oxides, hydroxides, and carbonates were leached to 80 to 90 pct recovery in 7 to 40 days of leaching with a solution containing 5 pct SO2 in column leaching tests. Preliminary cost analyses of surface mining-heap leaching, block caving-in situ leaching, and shrinkage stoping-in situ leaching indicate that the products of manganese leaching may be economically produced for the chemical and electrolytic manganese industries. The easiest marketable product to obtain would be a manganese sulfate commonly used as a fertilizer amendment. Manganese carbonates and hydroxides could also be precipitated from the pregnant leach solutions.

Pyrrhotite (FeS1+x ,0<x<0.15) is an iron sulfide which is considered to be a pest in carbon-in-pulp/ leach (CIP/L) gold processing [l].The perceived influence of pyrrhotite on gold processing by CIP/L is a competing consumption of 02 and CN­as the pyrrhotite dissolves by oxidation [1,2]. The few studies of the oxidation chemistry, kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation ofpyrrhotite are reviewed in detail elsewhere [3].There is broad agreement that the surface of pyrrhotite is very rapidly oxidized to form a thin (e.g. 10 nm) ferric hydroxy-oxide layer which overlays an iron-deficient sulfide lattice covering the original pyrrhotite. "The personal dust monitor (PDM) (model PDM3700), as well as other electronic devices, can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) which can disrupt the operation of some proximity detection systems (PDSs). A 15 cm (6 inch) minimum separation distance between the miner-wearable component (MWC) of the PDS and the electronic device usually avoids these disruptions, but due to the amount of equipment on a miner’s belt and the method of wearing the PDM in some situations, this distance can be difficult to always reliably maintain. Another method of reducing EMI effects is utilizing magnetic field shielding. The shielding capability of several different materials was investigated by surrounding the PDM with the material and quantifying the EMI. A copper mesh pouch reduced the EMI from a PDM3700, allowing a minimum separation distance of 10 cm (4 inches) instead of 15 cm (6 inches) as shown in a previous study for an unshielded PDM. A MU-metal box had a better shielding effectiveness, as it further reduced the minimum separation distance to less than 7 cm (2.8 inches). Shielding reduced the EMI of the PDM with MU-metal providing better results than the copper mesh. These materials may be beneficial for shielding individual components of the PDM or for constructing a shielded pouch. However, before the advantages of a shielded pouch can be determined, the effects of just the shielding material (metal) on the PDS needs to be quantified. INTRODUCTION According to statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 43 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM) since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been developed and are required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face CMMs, by 2018 (MSHA, 2015)."

This paper describes the successful mechanized extraction of coal pillars in 11 panels using the fish-tail method from 2010 to 2017 at Pinoura Mine in India. This method proved its potential of coal recovery with efficient strata control under weak roof due to faster rate of extraction in a single lift. Observations of strata and snook behavior during the field studies in different panels of the mine are included.

The vast majority of the estimated 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA per year use resin cartridges (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). About 4.5 million per annum of these are bolts with a mechanical shell that if properly installed become effective active supports on installation. In addition, cable anchors (mostly passive) are installed with typically 4 ft of effective resin anchorage length sometimes with mechanical shells, which further makes the installation more difficult. This is because the cable (even with a stiffener tube) is not very rigid. When installing bolts with mechanical shells and cable bolts in the holes, the back-pressure can be so high that the installation is unsuccessful often creating a ?spinner? (an un-tensioned bolt) at best or buckling the bolt thus requiring another bolt/cable to be installed, or leaving a poorly functioning unit. The installation problems can create a significant potential safety hazard and waste time and money. Using a purpose designed test rig that physically inserts different rock anchors into pipes with resin and measure the back-pressure developed with time during the insertion/ installation. The test installation procedure is designed to mirror that used underground by rockbolt operators in coal mines. In addition a computer model has been calibrated that can predict the approximate back pressure of new anchor and resin combinations acting as a screen before physical testing. This research has lead to an understanding and quantification of the insertion back-pressures and this already resulted in improved prototype designs that could lead to more reliable mechanical shell and resin bolt installations.

The technology employed in the processing of nickel- and cobalt¬bearing ores is a continually developing process for utilizing the natu¬ral resources available at a given time. Most of the nickel-bearing ores of commercial importance fall under the category of sulfide or lateritic ores. While the occurrences of both types of ore have been known for over a century, until 1960 sulfide ores largely from Cana¬dian mines have constituted the chief source of production for com¬mercial nickel in the Free World. Sulfide ores are readily amenable to some physical means of concentration, but the lateritic ores are not readily concentrated, and to compete economically with the sulfide ores only the high-grade garnierite ores (a type of lateritic ore) found in New Caledonia were processed to any great extent up to the time of World War II. Around 1960, a gradual shift in emphasis towards latetitic ores as a commercial source of nickel became evident. See Fig. 1. New discoveries of sulfide ores, usually located underground, had not kept pace with the steadily increasing demand for nickel. The lateritic ores, found near the surface of the earth, could be readily surveyed and mined. Lower cost processes were being developed for the extrac¬tion of nickel from lateritic ores and for a time it appeared that, based on pre-OPEC economics, the lower grade lateritic ores-down to 1.2% nickel-could satisfy an increasing share of the world demand for nickel. The sharp increase in the price of crude oil in the 1970s, however, slapped an economic damper on the lateritic ores. Processes for treat¬ing lateritic ores consume large amounts of energy; as the nickel industry entered its deep recessionary period in 1981-83, nickel pro¬duction from lateritic ores became less and less profitable than from sulfide ores. At the same time, new sulfide ores were discovered and brought into production, notably in Australia and South Africa. The chapters in Section 17 were prepared in 1973. Recent improvements in mineral dressing techniques since then include Inco&apos;s pyrrhotite separation process which can remove additional pyrrhotite from nickel concentrates, resulting in reduced sulfur dioxide emission from the Sudbury smelter, by some 25%. The chapters in this section dealing with nickel are grouped in line with the two broad categories of nickel ores. Starting with the description of nickel and cobalt ores in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 deals with the processing of sulfide ores, and Chapter 4 deals largely with lateritic ores. The intermediate steps to produce a suitable feed for extraction plants and refineries are similar in principle within the same categories, although dissimilar between sulfide and lateritic ores. Thus Inco in Canada employs flotation and so does Western Mining Corp. in Australia, although Inco&apos;s plants were started before World War II, and that of Western Mining only recently in the late 1960s. Treatment subsequent to the ore dressing step, however, shows some interesting differences. Hanford Reservation, in the State of Washington, with its deep basalt formations, is one of the three sites recommended by the Department of Energy for detailed investigations in order to select the first nuclear waste repository in the United States. Information obtained from several deep bore-holes drilled at Hanford indicates that the underground facility can be developed in one of the major basalt flows belonging to the Grande Ronde Formation in the Columbia Plateau, at depths greater than 3200 ft. One of the main concerns in the underground repository design is the achievement of acceptable environmental conditions during the development and the operation of the repository. For this, ventilation and air-conditioning are of prime importance and should be fully addressed. Besides the factors that determine the airflow requirements to meet the personnel and equipment operation needs, there are two major concerns that impact on the ventilation system design: the temperature of the in situ virgin basalt rock and the influx of groundwater. These two factors are related by the fact that the groundwater has the same temperature as the rock itself and they both constitute main sources of heat underground. Current information indicates that the temperature of the virgin rock at a depth of around 990 m (3250 ft) is 52°C (12S°F). However, there are some indications that the rock temperature at the selected horizon might be higher. This paper addresses the impact of the virgin rock temperature on the ventilation system and air-cooling requirements. Graphs with heat loads and cooling required for different rock temperatures have been prepared for a given model and network, using computer techniques for simulating the climatic parameters.

"The development of mining safety and health management as a recognized profession has been long in coming. Over the last 150 years, the mining industry has evolved from having individuals randomly involved in safety related work with no specific responsibilities or qualifications, on to the designation of individuals responsible for safety, regardless of knowledge, qualifications and experience and finally to today’s expectation that virtually every mine and mining company has designated individuals operating as safety and health professionals. Further, with the complexity, risk potential and moral expectations surrounding safety, people who address mine safety and health management are justifiably expected to function in a professional capacity including:1. Rendering a specialized service based on advanced knowledge and skill.2. Maintaining a high degree of obligation to those most affected by mine safety outcomes.3. Bound by an ethical code in working with the public, employers and miners.4. Maintaining confidentiality with an employer or client. This historical change parallels thedevelopment of other professions, e.g., attorneys, engineers, physicians, etc., with the exception that those professions require a license granted by a governmental agency, which is justified on the basis of public protection, in order to practice. Likewise, decisions made by today’s mine safety and health professionals, both directly and in association with other managers, clearly have a significant impact on the life and welfare of miners throughout the world.CertificationIn light of this, there is growing need to improve standards of competency and professionalism for those who work in mine safety and health management. An effective mechanism to accomplish this, other than licensure, is the use of accredited professional certification programs. There are many professional certification programs for safety and health throughout the world (Hale & Harvey, 2012). However, there is only one certification specific to mining —the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP). The International Academy of Mine Safety and Health (ISMSH-SME) was formed with the purpose of developing and managing mining safety and health certification programs for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). In 2016, following the discontinuation of the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals (ISMSP), which developed the Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) credential in the 1990s, the IAMSH-SME began the process of updating and relaunching the CMSP program. Among other work required to gain third-party accreditation both domestically and internationally, the IAMSH-SME has developed a new Body of Knowledge associated with mine safety and health management (Table 1)."
