Tin has been one of the very few commodities which has been covered by an international commodity agreement. It is the only metal so covered. The reason behind tin's prediliction for an agreement has been the inconsistency of the price pattern for tin during the entire 20th century. It is not surprising in view - of the wide and wild fluctuations in its price that tin has been called the Cinderella metal. An examination, for example, of prices in 1977 alone attests to the erratic behavior of the tin markets. The high was recorded on October 27 at M$1,895 per picul and the low on January 3 at M$l,314 3/8, on the Penang market, a spread in Malaysian dollars of $581 for a picul weighing 133 1/3 pounds. The first steps in international cooperation on tin were taken after the price bonanza of the First World War. Despite a lack of increased consumption, and in spite of the fact there was no shortage of mining production during the war, prices boomed. Shipping shortages and thinning stocks brought about a situation where in the U.S., industrial stocks were only 1/6 of what they had been in 1914. The boom busted early. In 1921 the tinplate industry of the world had cut its output in half and total world consumption of tin fell by 1/3. Tin producers became so concerned that they created what was called the Bandoeng Pool. It accumulated stocks held by countries now known as Indonesia and Malaysia, amounting to 28 percent of the combined production of the two countries and about 15 percent of the total world for 1921. The pool holdings were shortly exhausted and thereafter in the years 1924 to 1928, general boom conditions existed for tin.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the influence of atmospheric pressure changes on methane gas migration through mine seals at a mine site located in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. The mine gained access to a coal reserve through part of an abandoned mine and constructed nine seals to isolate the extensive old workings from the active mine area. Underground problems were experienced when atmospheric pressure fell, causing methane gas to migrate around the seals and into the active workings. During mining operations, methane gas levels exceeded legal limits and coal production was halted until the ventilation system could be improved. When mining resumed with increased air flow, methane gas concentrations occasionally exceeded the legal limits and production had to be halted until the methane level fell within the mandated limit. To assist the ventilation system, a pressure relief borehole located in the abandoned workings near the mine seals was proposed. Preliminary estimates by a gob gas simulator (computer model) suggested that a 0.76 m (2.5 ft) diameter pressure relief borehole with an exhaust fan would be necessary to remove enough methane from the abandoned area so that the ventilation system could dilute the gas in the active workings. However, by monitoring methane gas emissions and seal pressure, during periods of low atmospheric pressure, the amount of methane gas that migrated into the active mine workings was calculated. Researchers then determined that a relief borehole, 20.3 cm (8-in) with an exhaust fan could remove at least twice the maximum measured volume of migrating methane gas. Because gas concentrations in the abandoned workings could potentially reach explosive limits, it was proposed that the mine eliminate the exhaust fan. Installation of the recommended borehole and enlarging two other ventilation boreholes located in the abandoned area reduced methane gas leakage through the seals by at least 63%.

Clay mineralogic studies of ore versus barren rocks in the Grants mineral belt show that some combination of chlorite (rosette form), illite, mixed layer illite-montmorillonite, (- Mg-montmorillonite) are penecontemporaneous with uranium minerals in trend ore; these same clay minerals plus kaolinite are related to the roll type ore near the main redox front of the Grants mineral belt. Clay minerals from barren rocks are characterized by a greater abundance of Na-montmorillonite, kaolinite, and face-to-edge form chlorite. Chlorites from ore zones contain much more vanadium than do chlorites from barren rocks. Trend ore probably formed from southeasterly flowing waters following paleochannels in the Late Jurassic. These deposits are found almost entirely in reduced rocks, and organic carbon may have been an important reductant to remove U-V-Se-Mo from solution as carbonate from ore zones contains some organic carbon based on stable iso¬tope studies. Uplift, remobilization and reprecipitation of some of the trend ore resulted in the formation of redistributed ore, some of which possesses a roll type geometry. Mineralization for the roll type ore was apparently controlled by sulfide-sulfate equilibria at or near the main redox front in the Grants mineral belt. Trend and roll type ore possess different assemblages of clay minerals and different trace element abundances. Laramide faults cut both trend and some roll type ore. Stack ore is found in Laramide fault zones. Limited oxygen isotopic data from clay minerals in two mines at Ambrosia Lake in reduced rocks indicate probable preservation of ancient, formational waters and no evidence for infiltration by young meteoric waters. This information, plus the pre-Laramide faults, suggest, but do not unequivocally prove, that the main redox front has been relatively stable since its formation, probably some time in the Cretaceous. Younger encroachment of the redox front in post-Laramide is proposed by others, however, and the problem is unresolved. Uranium for the deposits was most likely carried in solution as an oxyion, probably as (UO2(CO3)2.2H2O)2- or (UO2(HPO4)2)2-, although organic transport cannot be entirely ruled out. Oxyions of vanadium, selenium, molybdenum and possibly arsenic and antimony, are interpreted from Eh-pH diagrams to have been segregated and transported with U6+ soluble species and precipitated when a chemically reducing environment was reached. The rare earth elements are also enriched in ore zones, but it is not clear if they were transported with the U-V-Se-Mo-(As)-(Sb) suite or derived from a more local source.

Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Spalling on both micro and macro scale, breakage, and deformation due to metal to metal contact; 3) Corrosion. An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in.) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions and laser scanner over a six-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls were significantly lessened.

The computer solutions provide for better service to customers and have helped increase sales. II. Summary Electronic data processing techniques were applied: 1. To automatically and continuously "trace" rail car shipments of bentonite. 2. To aid our sales people in recommending to glass plant purchasing agents which of several possible feldspathic materials is the best value at any of about 100 glass plants and to give guidance on the amount of value difference. 3. To help in locating plant sites for three blending or pre-mixing stations to serve the foundry industry at minimum cost and with maximum tonnage and maximum profitability.

INTRODUCTION Radcont is a program designed by the author of this paper for the industry to use as an instrument for radiation contamination evaluation and ventilation planning system. Radiation in mines are associated with the mining of gold and gold bearing minerals, as uranium and thorium is incorporated in the mining of these minerals. Radiation contamination in South African mines is not a new concept as it was investigated by the Chamber of Mines in the early 1960's and found not to be hazardous at the time. Since some of our mines export scrap metal to customers abroad, it came to light (1991) that some of the scrap metal was radioactive. The authority that oversees the nuclear aspects in South Africa is the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS). They investigated these matters and found that the mines needed further information regarding radioactive material and the handling of these contaminated materials. As the various mines were licensed (with various conditions incorporated) thereafter, the mines had to do their own investigations as to what extent their properties (Surface and underground) were radioactively contaminated. Some mines were found to be highly contaminated over the years of operation and controlling conditions were installed and measures installed to reduce the contamination levels. One of the conditions when issuing a licence by the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS), is that a screening survey be carried out to determine the radiation exposure levels and corrective action to be taken if necessary. These surveys must be done by a person trained in the required procedures for such a survey. The person must also measure the risk correctly and assess the results properly. In such a survey, the internal and external exposure levels must be determined to assess the total exposure of persons working in those conditions and take appropriate action if necessary. When doing such a survey, hundreds and more likely, thou- sands of data points are recorded. In order to assess the data recorded, various integrated and difficult calculations need to be made, and takes up enormous amounts of time. (This excludes the interpretation of the results ) The following explanation of the program shows the different parts of such a survey assessment calculations to be done. The paper details the program layout and the different sub- sections within the primary program. It must be stated that the program, as with any other program, is as accurate as the data inserted into the data base. The program and details thereof are given under the following headings: 1. TOTAL EFFECTIVE DOSAGE WITH REGARDS TO: • GME required gravimetric results obtained (mg/m3) • Thick layer or total contamination measured (Bq/m2) • Dry condition surveys with dust loads taken as a Standard l0mg/m3 • Wet conditions survey with dust loads taken as l mg/m3 • Airborne long lived alpha and beta activities as determined by analysis in Bg/m3 • LTD (Thermoluminescent Dosimeter). Results as obtained from the SABS (South African Buro of Standards) are recorded in this section for each month of the year for each individual worker. An average dose is then determined at the end of the year. • Bucket measurements as recorded. • Smear samples (Loose contamination). As determined by Electra or by analysis • Occupational factors for Metallurgical and Engineering occupations in and around the Metallurgical facilities of your mine. • All underground dosage determination and calculations. (Radon and Thoron) 2. INFORMATION REQUIRED WHEN PROGRAM IS INITIALISED: As the program is started, it opens up on the contents page. Here there are various options to choose from, but one is cautioned as a beginner in operating the program, not to perform any tasks before carefully reading these instructions. Firstly, one must go to the 'Information required" pushbutton. Press this button. The information required page is shown where the cursor can be moved to the block where one can enter the specific mines name. To enter a mines name, put the cursor in the block provided and just insert the mines name with the normal keyboard keys and press the enter button on the computer keyboard. To enter the other information required such as Alpha and Beta instrument efficiency, ALI (Annual limit of intake) and probe area, one can either press the 'Data required" button for a dialog box information or enter it manually by just putting the cursor in the block provided and entering as did above. In order to insert all the required information for the pro- gram to calculate the information required, one must proceed further by entering the area names surveyed in the spaces provided. There are 20 spaces to enter 20 different areas surveyed. One must further also provide the amount of days worked in each area (i.8. 250) in the block provided. The de- fault is 250 days. U.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal dust compliance data sometimes shows high silica levels at roof bolters. However, it is unclear whether this silica normally originates from the bolter itself or from other dust sources upwind of the bolter research studies to answer this question at individual mines have been conducted. However, operational practices vary from mine to mine thus, the information gleaned from any one study cannot be accurately extrapolated to describe silica dust sources in most mines. In this paper, three decades of bolter dust research are reviewed the results showed that, while inadequate maintenance on the bolter dust collection system can result in excessive dust, more likely reasons for high silica levels are inadequate ventilation of the mine entries being bolted and dust traveling downwind from the continuous miner to the bolter. The Lower Olentangy Tunnel project includes 47,000 cubic yards of planned ground improvement for earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) tunneling (5.2 km) and microtunneling (335 m) in glacial soils. Jet grouting started in late 2021 and will continue through 2023 to complete operations at 5 shafts, 14 safe havens, 5 watermain ground improvement zones, and a river crossing. Typical jet grout columns are installed at depths between 15–24 meters. Discrete soil-cement blocks range from 267–8,900 cubic yards in volume. This paper discusses the methodology, testing, and technical considerations associated with jet grouting operations in glacial overburden across an urban environment.

"The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cemantitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of perma¬nent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the U.S.A. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending upon depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting in significant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating "Max-Seal" polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased several-fold in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

The design and strength of pillars are important parameters when implementing the room-and-pillar mining method in a limestone mine. The process becomes complex with the presence of karst voids, which are frequent phenomena in carbonate rock formations. This research continues a previous study aimed at studying the effect of karst voids on the strength of a particular limestone pillar. Using calculated pillar strength and estimated redistributed stresses, it was assessed that the pillar can counter more stress than currently imparted on it. Numerical modeling studies combining in situ stress determination and excavation sequencing were used to estimate the existing stresses on the pillar. Different possibilities of modification to existing pillar design were simulated using distinct element method (DEM) modeling to determine a better design.

Its mission is to promote responsible and sustainable mining among new generations while fostering a culture of equality and respect. This comprehensive educational program integrates sustainable development goals and includes workshops led professionals and external experts who share their personal stories to inspire students from rural and urban educational institutions to follow their dreams. Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

At the Mount Isa mine, Mount Isa, Qld., Australia, sublevel open-stope mining is used for copper ore while both sublevel open-stope and cut-and-fill methods are used for the silver-lead-zinc ores. Production in 1979¬80 was 4 730 000 t (5,200,000 st) copper ore and 2 590 000 t (2,850,000 st) of lead ore. The deepest mine level currently is 960 m below the surface. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The mine is located in the valley of the Leichhardt River in Lower Proterozoic sediments of the Mount Isa group. The regional strike of the sediments is north¬south and they have a persistent westerly dip of about 1.1 rad (65°). In the mine area, the Mount Isa group comprises a sequence of alternating bands of dolomitic shales and siltstones some 3.2 km (2 miles) in width. It is bounded on the east by greenstones and quartzose sediments of the Eastern Creek volcanics, and on the west by the Mount Isa fault, west of which occur schists and other metamorphic rocks. The ore bodies as currently known at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart shale, a formation of thinly bedded pyritic, dolomitic, and volcanic shales some 1070 m (3500 ft) thick. Towards the top of the Mount Isa group sediments, copper and silver-lead-zinc ore bod¬ies occur as contiguous but discrete entities and are mined and treated separately (see Figs. I and 2). Argentiferous galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and minor associated sulfides occur in distinct concordant bands throughout the Urquhart shales. Wherever these bands are grouped together in sufficient density they constitute silver-lead-zinc ore bodies with widths varying up to 36.6 m (120 ft). Other mineralized bands are common in intervening beds. Individual ore bodies persist for many hundreds of meters concordant with the strike and dip of the enclosing shales. Intersections of these beds with fold axes provide local zones of enrichment but otherwise the mineral content of the ore bodies varies only slightly throughout the extent of the dip and strike. Chalcopyrite is the only important primary copper mineral. It occurs in association with pyrite and pyrrhotite as disseminated flocks and as vein fillings throughout irregularly shaped zones of folded, brecciated, and re¬crystallized Urquhart shale. These zones, which are lo¬cally termed "silica-dolomite" bodies, are broadly transgressive to the shale bedding and confine all significant copper mineralization to the virtual exclusion of silver¬lead-zinc mineralization. In some areas, the downward percolation of acidic water through faults and shears has caused extensive leaching of the coarse-grained carbon¬ates to depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft), but most of the silica-dolomite remains unleached and the ground is competent. The majority of lead ore being mined is north of the main shaft pillar (R62, U62) area. "“Safety Pays in Mining” web application developed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of more than 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, the app will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items, such as services or equipment, on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the app by discussing its development, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using it.IntroductionInjuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. “Safety Pays in Mining” is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits.The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies do not usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, for example, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide that just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of the potential impact on their company’s financial health."

It involves a comprehensive ventilation survey in three deep and mechanized underground coal mines in India. Using VentSim software, 3D simulation models were developed to predict heat stress conditions and explore the application of auxiliary ventilation and spot coolers to reduce heat stress.

The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.

"In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on the hydrometallurgical processing of molybdenite, with the decline of high-grade and easily handled molybdenum minerals. In this work, a novel method of selective extraction of complex molybdenite concentrate, which is characteristic of high-grade copper ore, has been investigated. The results show that the leaching of chalcopyrite was impacted by the pH of the electrolyte when sodium carbonate and ammonium acid carbonate were added to the electrolyte. The leaching rate of molybdenum reached 99.39%, but chalcopyrite could not be leached at all in 240 min under experimental conditions of liquid-to-solid ratio 25:1, concentration of NaCl 4 mol/L, pH=9, room temperature and agitation speed 400 rpm. The grade of copper in the residue was 21.84%, with a recovery 99.93%. The technology of selective electro-oxidation leaching of molybdenum and recovery of copper from complex molybdenite concentrate is an effective separation method. The diffusion control model can be used to describe the process of leaching of molybdenum. The activation energy of the leaching reaction was found to be approximately 9.21 kJ/mol.IntroductionWorldwide, high-grade and easy-to-handle ore is decreasing, while the proportion of low-grade and complex ore is increasing. Porphyry copper ores with associated low-grade molybdenite are very abundant in China. Molybdenum is a valuable byproduct in the processing of porphyry copper deposits where the molybdenum is present in low quantities in the form of molybdenite (MoS2). In the conventional processing of copper sulfide ores by froth flotation, most of the molybdenite in the ore floats along with the copper sulfides. In this way, a bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate is produced. Afterward, the bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is treated by differential flotation to obtain a rougher molybdenum concentrate, which requires several successive cleaning steps to produce a final molybdenum concentrate. However, it is widely recognized that flotation alone cannot economically produce a high-grade molybdenite concentrate, i.e., with less than 0.5% Cu. Therefore, in most cases, it is necessary to use a final step of chemical purification of the molybdenite concentrate to reduce the copper content to a level suitable for the market (Antonijevic and Pacovic,1992; Gerhardt et al., 2001; Fu and Zhong, 2003; Reza et al., 2006, Rafael et al., 2013)."

The Groveland Mine. Concentrator and Pellet Plant are located in Dickinson County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The construction of the Groveland Mine in 1959 was the first United States operation for the Hanna Mining Company in mining and beneficiating low grade iron formations. (1) The plant produced concentrates at 675,000 lt/yr. (746,600 mt/yr.) which was used as sinter feed in the steel industry from 1959 to 1963. Upon completion of a pelletizing plant in April, 1963 production increased to 1.6 million lt/yr (1.77 million mt/yr) of pellets. After the plant expansion, mill capacity increased to 2.2 million 1t/yr (2.43 million mt/yr.), producing 2.0 million It/yr (2.23. million mt/yr.) of pellets assaying 63.0% iron and 7.0% silica. (1) Prior to April, 1971 the concentrator operated with a flowsheet consisting of spirals and a petroleum sultonate iron notation circuit. This was presented in a paper by R. R. Smith and E. E. Sougstad, "Flotation at the Groveland Mine" in the 50th Anniversary Volume entitled "Froth Flotation". The ore body at the Groveland Mine consists basically of two types of iron formation (34% total iron, 20% magnetic iron head), the most abundant of which is a bedded magnetite-chert-silicate rock. This is intermingled to varying degrees with non-bedded to poorly bedded hematite-clastic quartz-chert rock. (1) In developing the Groveland flowsheet, Humphrey spirals were used because of their ability to produce a coarse size concentrate at a low cost. Tests run in the lab and pilot plant on the Groveland ore showed a. spiral weight recovery in the 27 to 33% range. (2) However as the ore body was opened up, it became evident that the most abundant ore type did not liberate at the coarse size fraction needed for spirals. Plant recoveries for the first five years operating the spirals only averaged from 10 to 15% weight recovery. In 1971 the weight recovery on the spirals had dropped to a low of 5%. To increase iron recovery and at the same time increase plant capacity with the least effect on the present operations the mill flaw-sheet proceeded from a spiral-notation circuit to an all flotation circuit to a magnetic separator-flotation circuit. During this changeover the concentrate grade also had to be improved to meet market demands. To do this the following changes evolved
