On July 13, 1967 the San Bernardino County Planning Commission approved publicly a request by American Smelting and Refining Company for a zone variance to conduct a silver mining and milling operation in the Calico district, southern California, Coincidentally, on July 14 the U.S. Treasury halted its sales of silver, and the U.S. free market price quoted rose immediately from $1.30 to $1.77 per ounce. In its request to the commission Asarco stated that about 13,500 to 15,000 tons of rock would be moved daily by surface mining, including 7,000 tons of ore. The ore would be crushed to minus three-quarters inches and the silver recovered "by a chemical process." The grade of the ore was not given, but the company said that it might also recover barite as a byproduct, The operation would employ 150-160 people. Additional activity in the district includes exploration programs by Superior Oil Company and Calico Silver Mines, Ltd. History and production: In retrospect, as the price of silver began to rise in 1961 from 91 cents an ounce, and as Asarco began its exploration program in late 1964, a new era for an old bonanza silver district would seem to have begun. The Calico district has been mined for silver only on a very, very small scale since 1882 to 1896, when an estimated $12 to $20 million (perhaps 15 to 20 million troy ounces) of that metal was produced from the 50-odd mines of the district and vicinity. These mines include the Silver King, Oriental, Waterloo, Garfield, Odessa and Waterman (which is about 8 miles west of the district). Much smaller-valued amounts of barite, gold, lead, and copper also have been produced from the ore deposits of the district; and from 1884 to 1907 the region yielded about $9 million worth of borate minerals.

Computer-aided control of a mining machine places its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks. Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinates) and heading (yaw) are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: a scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS), that employs ring-laser gyroscopes (RLGs). This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to a continuous mining machine (CM). Included are field test results off each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating West Virginia mine.

"1. THE VICTORIA STATION TRANSPORT HUB Victoria Underground station is part of the Victoria transport hub, which comprises one of London’s main train termini and a major bus station. At the Underground station, the District Line running in the older shallow brick tunnels dating back to 1868 cross the Victoria Line running in the lower tunnels, which were opened in 1969. After Waterloo, Oxford Circus and King’s Cross/St. Pancras Tube stations, Victoria is the most frequented station on the London Underground network and is used by over 80 million passengers per year. Capacity at Victoria Tube station has been inadequate for many years with passenger numbers steadily rising. Overcrowding is a constant challenge and the station has to be closed regularly during morning and evening peaks until sufficient trains pass through to clear the platforms. For this reason an extension has been debated since the 1990s. After intensive preliminary investigations and feasibility studies covering many variants, which included a large-scale jet grouting test to determine the applicability of this technology as a protective measure for the tunnelling works, the project was officially started with the Victoria Station Transport and Works Act Order (Secretary of State, 2009) effective on the 18th of September 2009. Following a competitive tender process a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall were awarded the contract by London Underground, with their design being carried out by Mott MacDonald Ltd. Ensuring the busy station remained open to the public was a key requirement of the Victoria Station Upgrade. Jet grouting works, which were executed from ground surface, were also carried out while the station was fully operational 2. OVERVIEW The Victoria Station Upgrade aims to increase the capacity of the Underground station significantly and one of its major design objectives is to optimise the transfer between the Underground lines. In order to achieve this, the following new structures are currently under construction: •,A new North Ticket Hall •,Extension of the existing South Ticket Hall •,Nine new escalators •,Connecting tunnels between the North and the South Ticket Hall •,8 new lifts providing step free access to all platforms •,An improved connection between the rail/bus terminus and the Underground station As the elevation and geometry of the existing structures cannot be changed, the new structures need to be adapted to the existing structures (see Figure 1)."

An atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of collectors on mineral surfaces in a copper/molybdenum flotation system. AFM images show that collectors absorb on chalcopyrite surface in patches at pH 11. A study of temperature effect on surface morphology excludes the possibility that these patches are nanobubbles forming on hydrophobized mineral surface. Hydrocarbon oil absorbs on molybdenite quickly, while KEX (potassium ethyl xanthate) has little affinity for molybdenite. Pyrite is much more reactive in water and its surface is easily coated in Ca(OH)2 solutions at pH 11. Based on the obtained AFM images, the adsorption of chemicals on mineral surface and its impact on copper/molybdenum flotation were discussed.

The most important safety aspect associated with great mining height in steeply dipping coal seam mining is the stability and control of the roof. When soft coal and hard gangue make up the immediate roof of a working face, the soft-coal interlayer plays a significant role in gangue damage and can cause problems such as roof collapse in front of the support, collapse of partial area supports and other problems that can affect the stability of the supports and the surrounding rock system. This study found that the first weighting step of a multigangue roof is larger than that of a nongangue roof, but periodic weighting steps are similar. The overburden collapse height is lower in a multigangue roof than in a nongangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Failure of the coal interlayer is the key factor in the collapse of multilayer gangue. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the support is concluded by the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer mechanical model. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth. Certain measures are proposed to control the stability of the gangue roof, including zoning control of the mining height and resistance and advancing the support while maintaining roof contact, thus ensuring the integrity of the support and surrounding rock system.

White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine's total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.

The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

Throughout the history of power excavating machines, engineers have continuously tried to shape the main drive speed-torque characteristics to provide an optimum performance from each main motion. Selection of prime mover for the various motions has been the subject of many engineering studies and most forms of energy conversion have been tried. A new form of electrical power conversion looms on the horizon' as the most optimum yet. Controlled frequency operation of a squirrel cage induction motor increases the reliability of the most reliable form of energy conversion (electrical) found thus far and at the same time improves the performance characteristics.

Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern's Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.'s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel's Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie's Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels' discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco's mills along Chessie's rail tracks. Burlington Northern's $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. "Most of the gold produced worldwide is still obtained by cyanidation, in spite of the difficulties encountered in the processing of some gold ores such as the dissolution of copper-bearing minerals in cyanide solutions. The leached copper forms complexes with cyanide and causes several operating problems, which have led to the development of copper removal/recovery processes, among them the industrially accepted SART process (sulfidization, acidification, recycling and thickening). Although the SART process is in use in gold production plants around the world, new challenges are appearing with the continuous varying of the mineralogy of ores (such as higher copper grades, changing the solution composition and complexity). The optimal SART operating conditions for a specific solution are not the same when the composition of the solution changes; consequently, the efficiency of this process can decrease.The present study is a thermodynamic approach, corroborated by laboratory experiments, to explain how the main variables of the process affect the efficiency of copper precipitation as cuprous sulfide (Cu2S). The variables considered were pH value, copper concentration, cyanide/copper molar ratio and sulfur/copper molar ratio, all of which werevaried within the limits encountered in typical cyanidation solutions presenting the problem of copper.It was found that the variable that most affects the efficiency of the process was the pH value, since poor or no control of it can cause cuprous sulfide redissolution. The S/Cu molar ratio is also important: raising this ratio increases copper removal, but high ratios will also cause sulfide and cyanide losses. The effect of changing the CN/Cu molar ratio was negligible between 4 and 8. For a solution containing 300 mg/L copper and 490 mg/L cyanide, copper removal as high as 98.8% can be obtained with the addition of 0.6 moles of sulfide per mole of copper at pH = 6.IntroductionThe main process for gold production is cyanidation, because it is the most economical and efficient process so far. Precious-metal leaching occurs when the ore is placed in contact with a dilute alkaline cyanide solution. The dissociation of cyanide salts provides free cyanide ions, which allow the formation of the aurocyanide complex Au(CN)2 -. This complex can be retrieved from the solution by adsorption on activated carbon or by zinc precipitation. Although the use of cyanide represents an issue to health and the environment, there are technologies for its management and treatment that can be easily applied. Furthermore, it is a low-cost process compared with other methods that are available or under development."

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

Groundwater freezing was used to stabilise 8m thick beds of saturated and weakly cemented sands at a depth of 170m, during driving of twin 1 in 4,5.2m o.d. circular drifts from the surface to the Coal Measures through 600m of Permo-Triassic strata. Instrumentation was installed during erection of the lining in frozen and unfrozen ground to measure ground and groundwater pressures on the lining and ground temperatures up to lm into the frozen ground. Observations showed that following thawing, effective lining stresses in the frozen zone were low, indicating minimum strata disturbance during freezing and subsequent machine excavation. Groundwater pressures were lower than expected.

Applications of machine learning and robotics in the tunneling industry are still nascent. Research and development are ongoing in TBM guidance; prediction of TBM cutter wear and tunneling induced ground deformations; and robotic arms for segment installation, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of TBM cutting tools. This paper presents a case study of geological profile reconstruction using multimodal machine learning. The results from this study can aid the development and application of multimodal AI technologies to generate data reports and geological profiles in real time, taking voice recordings, photos, or videos obtained directly from the field as inputs.

Laboratory conducted cutting tests at traverse speeds up to 1 m/s have been undertaken with high pressure water jets assisting the cutting action of drag tools. Four sandstones and one limestone have been investigated, which represents a wide range of compressive strength. Variables investigated include water jet pressure, nozzle diameter, depth of cut, traverse speed, jet position, and tool bluntness. The test programme has allowed a model to be developed which describes the action of water jet assistance for three conditions dependent on the ability of the jet to penetrate the rock: where no significant penetration occurs, where penetration is greater than 50% of the tool depth, and an optimum condition around 30% of tool depth.

Coal was discovered in South Africa in the mid 1830's. The earliest exploitation of modern times was probably in Natal where, in a letter dated 20 August 1842, a Captain Smith mentions that a wagonload of coal brought to Pietermaritzburg, was sold. Until the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and the Witwatersrand gold in 1886, coal mining satisfied a very small domestic demand. By 1889, at least four collieries were operating in the Middelburg-Witbank district, some 120 kilometres East of Johannesburg, and mining had star- ted at Vereeniging, about 50 kilometres to the South of Johannesburg. A map of South Africa is shown in Figure 1 and an enlargement of the main coal mining areas in Figure 2.

LIX63 in combination with DNNS selectively extracts nickel and/or cobalt from acidic leach liquors with pH values as low as 1.0. Nickel/cobalt and cobalt/nickel selectivities are achieved by varying the relative concentrations of LIX63 and DNNS. Increasing LIX63 concentration retards both extraction and strip-ping rates while DNNS has the opposite effect. Slope analyses of equilibrium data indicate that both LIX63 and DNNS are present in the extracted complexes. Examples of possible flowsheets are presented.

Autonomous mining systems have been deployed for improving mine performance. However, there is a fear of job losses. Adoption of autonomous systems is envisaged to be resisted by major stakeholders in Ghana due to high illiteracy and unemployment. This paper assesses the preparedness of Ghanaian mining stakeholders for the adoption of autonomous systems to Ghana’s surface mining industry. Closed and open-ended questionnaires were administered to mine stakeholders. Respondents generally expressed unwillingness to accept autonomous systems into Ghanaian mines due to fear of increased unemployment. We propose setting up a mining education fund (MEF) for training stakeholders in autonomous mining systems. INTRODUCTION Mining contributes enormously to the sustenance and growth of global and national economies through the provision of raw materials, employment, revenues and foreign exchange (Carvalho, 2017; ICMM, 2017; Cordes et al., 2016; Solomon et al., 2008; Walser, 2000). The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM, 2014) reported that globally, formal mining employs approximately 2.5 million people. Many resource-rich countries, especially the developing ones, have experienced strong socioeconomic growth propelled by the discovery and extraction of valuable minerals. McMahon and Moreira (2014) reported a positive linkage between mining and sustainable development. They revealed that averagely, resource-rich countries have improved Human Development Index (HDI) scores than countries without mineral resources. Mining remains a crucial industry in Ghana’s economic development (Bermúdez-Lugo, 2016; Amponsah-Tawiah and Dartey-Baah, 2011). Over the years, mining has contributed significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana. In 2013, mining accounted for 1.7% of Ghana’s GDP and about 19% of government revenues (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2015). The Ghana Chamber of Mines also reported that mining contributed over 50% of foreign direct investment, 37% of export earnings and 1.1% of direct employment revenues. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that 65% of coal, 92% of metals and 96% of industrial minerals are mined using surface mining methods (DOE, 2007). Generally, mining is a capital-intensive venture, with high operating cost, hence there is a constant demand for mining companies to seek efficient cost reduction and production maximization strategies. One strategy being pursued keenly is automation, which is noted to improve productivity, and worker safety at minimal cost. According to Parreira (2013), mining automation involves direct teleoperation whereby workers remotely control the mining process using computers from a control room.

This paper presents the excavation of the Roosevelt Island Valve Chamber, the final of three chambers in Stage One of New York City's Third Water Tunnel. The valve chamber and passageways 13 379.7 cu m (17 500 cu yd) are drilled and blasted. The rock is stabilized by grouted rock anchors. The 6.1 m (20 ft) diameter shaft is drilled, blasted, rock bolted and wire meshed for a depth of 70.7 m (232 ft). Then shaft excavation proceeds with immediate concrete lining for another 120.7 m (396 ft). Two 6.1m (20 ft) diameter manifolds are excavated using heading and bench. The raise drilling of eight 3.7 m (12 ft) diameter laterals occurs during lower shaft sinking.

The big hole drilling industry is a relatively new one. In fact, very little big hole drilling was done prior to 1950. If there is to be a marriage between big hole drilling and mining, we should certainly take a look at the background of the big hole drilling industry. Let us examine the three main features of big hole drilling and determine how each applies to mining. Let's also look at the good qualities and the limitations of each of these character traits.
