It is clear that precise overground and under-ground mapping is an important factor for all designers. Due to rapid changes in underground construction, tunnel designers are increasingly in need of updating project information. This article explains the latest techniques for detecting under-ground utilities as well as underground mapping. Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very ac-curate and popular navigation and mapping system that has been used extensively above ground, but is not used for underground mapping as signals are not strong enough to pass through ground or water. Most underground techniques were developed for military applications during the first and second world wars. Later, the techniques became public. For example, ground penetrating radar was developed for the military in 1970 to be used for locating tunnels under the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Later, the same technique was used for detecting unexploded ordinance such as plastic land mines.

For several generations now, the high alumina clayey sediments of Southeastern Alabama and Southwestern Georgia have supplied those regions with steady, mineral-based income although the impact of that income has been relatively minor until recently. Since World War II, mining activity has increased algebraically with over half of the total ore value in the Alabama area having been recovered since that time. The Georgia area production increases are even more dramatic. The trends are continuing and the next decade should see ore winning figures which will dwarf all previous production. It's time for the mining engineers to take note of this development as the mining methods, similar to the production, have developed rapidly and now offer challenges for the most competent professional. The development of mining techniques has followed a classic pattern. Beginning almost a hundred years or so ago, with the loading of weather-resistant surface boulders into mule-drawn wagons, mining methods have progressed to discovery of limited surface exposures in outcrop and eventually to stripping and development of non-obvious, subsurface deposits. Little by little, the overburden thickness of new pits has increased until, at present, pits with 100' -125' of overburden are being actively worked. Ground water problems in the Eufaula District are particularly challenging. At A. P. Green's J. W. Baker Pit, #l, in Barbour Co., Alabama, it is necessary to continually pump groundwater at the rate of about 400 gallons per minute from wells on the periphery of this large pit in order to keep the water table low enough to allow mining of the ore body.

There are three parties to the oil imports controversy: the domestic oil producers, whose side has just been ably summarized by Mr. Jameson; the oil importers; and the public. Domestic producers and importers are both motivated by economic self-interests, that is by their natural and legitimate desire for profit maximization, in their respective positions. Thus, domestic producers, rightly, regard every barrel of imported crude oil (with the exception of some specialty crudes) as a displacement of a barrel of their own crude. Hence, the lower the import Level the better they like it. Conversely, U .S. refiners whose plants are located at the seaboard or at certain inland waterways generally welcome a higher level of imports because refiner profits are based primarily on the spread between the crude oil price and the refined products price, since crude oil represents by far the refiner?s largest cost factor. The relatively low cost of foreign oil means therefore higher profits to those refiners able to process such oil, This applies particularly to integrated companies whose own domestic oil production is insufficient, to meet their refinery requirements but who have developed ample low-cost foreign oil supplies.

Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence (?Smax) induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/I -p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. I (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goaf may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between ?Smax/m vs. h/1-p. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data.

Production began in the Deep 1 zone of Goldex mine in 2017 at a depth of 1,200 m. Stope dimensions are 50 m high by 22 m wide (along strike) and the panel thickness varies between 22 to 35 m. The Deep 1 orebody is 350 m high by 400 m along strike and 200 m from hanging wall to footwall. The mining method is longhole with paste backfill with a three dimensional primary/secondary sequence advancing upwards in a typical chevron approach and retreating from hanging wall to footwall in a V-shape from a central panel. Mining at a depth of 1,200 m in massive granodiorite brings challenges related to seismicity.

Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. The flexure of geologic strata, a phenomenon of inter- est to geologists and mining engineers alike, is examined as a sheet bending problem' in Coulomb plasticity. Formulae for the distribution of stress, strain and displacement increments, volume change, change in the length of the central surface and power of dissipation, as well as for the neutral surface shift are given. Strains of any magnitude are considered. The analysis shows that deeply buried strata may bend and develop "tensile" cracks under generally compressive states of stress. It is also shown that bed separation and high capacity props are desirable in mechanized longwall mining, a result in keeping with operating experience. Although speculative at this time, the analysis provides a rational working hypothesis as regards the problem of strata flexure and control.

Critical path modeling (CPM) has been used widely as a tool to manage large-scale projects having many activities which are conducted in series or parallel. The construction industry is a regular user of critical path modeling as a planning tool. In this context, the method is used to provide an orderly schedule for all activities to forecast delays, slippages, and problem areas and to identify critical activities where resources should be directed. It also identifies others which have slack time, and provides information on the degrees of freedom and flexibility available in completing the project. The purpose of applying critical path modeling to an underground mining system is not primarily for scheduling, but as an analysis tool. In observing underground mining systems, it Is clear that repeated sequences of activities must take place for mining to proceed efficiently. Some of these activities must be sequential, while others be carried out in parallel. The fundamental difference between critical path modeling applied to mining versus a large-scale construction project are: (1) The activities in a mining system are cyclic in nature. (2) The location of the activity varies, and the entire process is not thought of as co-located, as is the case in a construction project. Another important aspect of the network development for mining systems is the degree of detail that is desired. One can be concerned with very macroscopic networks which represent, for example, an entire mine life cycle. Networks representing this problem would be more closely analogous to those of a large construction project. On the other hand, one might be interested in evaluating alternative ways of developing a property or of mining in a given section. More detailed networks representing the section activities are necessary to evaluate system parameters and their impact on long-term production.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine for analysis and display on the surface. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in collaboration with Signal Peak Energy (SPE), LLC, Bull Mountains No. 1 Mine, operated a TBS during mining of two bleederless, longwall panels. This paper describes the gas analysis data and its interpretation. As verified by the TBS, coal at the SPE mine tends to oxidize slowly. It was known that a reservoir of low-oxygen concentration atmosphere developed about 610 m (2,000 ft) behind the longwall face. A bleederless ventilation system facilitates formation of an inert atmosphere in this longwall gob and decreases the likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Connections of the mine atmosphere to the surface through subsidence cracks could allow airflow into the longwall gob, revive coal oxidation and increase spontaneous combustion risk. The atmospheric composition of the sealed areas was homogeneous, except in the immediate vicinity of suspected ingassing points. The TBS verified that gases within the partially sealed, bleederless longwall gob expanded into the longwall tailgate area when barometric pressure decreased. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the back return airflow at the longwall tailgate was observed to increase by a factor of three and possibly up to 10 times the typical background concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, depending on the size of the longwall gob and the magnitude of barometric pressure decrease. TBS have the inherent disadvantage of slow response time due to travel time of the gas samples and sequential gas analyses. A TBS or similar continuous monitoring system could be beneficial in detecting and providing warning of potentially hazardous gas concentrations, if the slow response time of the system is always understood.

An industrial engineering and computer simulation study was conducted on reclamation operations to evaluate the possibility of integrating mining and reclamation operations, and to evaluate the factors which influence the production potential of scrapers. The study was done in a southern Illinois strip coal mine producing approximately 2.27 M metric tons (2.5 million short tons) of clean coal annually. The main outcomes of this study are (a) it is possible to reduce reclamation cost about 20-25 percent by integrating reclamation and mining operations, (b) haul distance has the most significant effect on scraper production, (c) push-pull is the best mode of operation for wheel scrapers for topsoil/subsoil removal, and (d) historical data obtained from the mine for one year show that average dozer productivity in rock grading is about 60 percent lower than the expected production; similar data for scraper is about 25 percent less.

The use of paste backfill in room-and-pillar coal mines in the United States needs to be fully investigated. This paper discusses a series of physical tests that were conducted to examine the support benefits of theoretical paste backfill regimens in Illinois Basin room-and-pillar coal mines, which necessarily included consideration of weak floor conditions. The series of tests included those simulating strong floor conditions, weak floor conditions, under-confined scenarios, and testing of actual coal-based paste backfill samples. The testing indicated that a paste backfill regimen utilizing a minimum backfill strength of 22 psi at a minimum fill height of 50% of pillar height could significantly increase the longterm stability of coal pillars in the Illinois Basin. Considering typical coal wash plant recoveries, 50% fill would be feasible.

In the constant search for ways and means of improving the quality of coke and thus making its use at the blast-fornace more satisfactory and economical, it has become increasingly evident that the present laboratory tests do not show the full picture of a coke's value as a blast-furnace fuel. This fact was recognized by Dr. A. C. Pieldner thirty-five years ago: (Ref. 1) here is perhaps no phase of fuel technicology which has aroused more discussion or regarding which there is more difference of opinion than the properties of coke which make it most suitable for blast-furnaces and other uses." Dr. Fieldner followed this assertion with a statement to the effect that men who write on this subject today (1923) have, because of conflicting experimental evidence brought forth in recent years, far less positive opinions on the matter than did writers of some years past. One is led to wonder if these statements are not just as true now as they were when first made.

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

In this paper the main subsidence- ground-structure interactions and an overview of the response of surface structures to subsidence ground movements are presented. The purpose of the paper is to augment our understanding for more effective application of available data as well as to highlight the essential site conditions in building response. The data presented general1 y applies to houses to structures up to 2-3 stories high and no more than several hundred feet in length. Superstructures of these buildings are supported by exterior (wood-frame or masonry) bearing walls with the interior floor loads carried by essentially one row of interior columns. This paper is not directed towards the response of tall buildings, steel-framed structures, or building types commonly associated with schools, churches, libraries, etc.

As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at thirteen mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing buckets ranging from 30-to 220-cubic-yard capacity, were documented. We have judged that U.S. surface coal mining draglines, 30 yards and larger, can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cubic-yard buckets, moving 1.8 x 10 yards of overburden during 6,650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on our limited field study, we have calculated that downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each (typical 60-yard) dragline. The total lost production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 x 10 yards annually. Although study findings did not reveal anything about dragline rope life that wasn't known or practiced by one operator or another, most operators could expect improved rope life by periodic review of their practices and by adopting or adapting one or more life-improvement measures employed at other sites. Since rope productivity was found to vary by about five to one, among the sites studied, we believe considerably improved average performance is possible. As little as ten percent overall improvement would mean increased national productivity exceeding two million yards of solid overburden removal, and associated savings in rope costs alone of some two million dollars annually, not to mention any reduction of labor-related expenses. This report outlines preliminary findings which may prove useful to many operators in extending wire rope life, thereby lowering expenses and increasing surface coal mining productivity. I gratefully acknowledge the help of a number of American and Canadian geologists, in both federal surveys and in private firms, who took the time to discuss this problem with me. Hans Landsberg and Bruce Netschert also followed the study with interest and encouragement. In their 1961 monograph, THE FUTURE SUPPLY OF THE MAJOR METALS, Bruce Netschert and Hans Landsberg noted that identified potential resources (that is, known but submarginal resources) of lead and zinc were much lower relative to reserves (that is, known and supermarginal resources) than was the same ratio for other metals.1/ Put another way, it seemed that for such metals as iron, manganese, copper, and aluminum, slightly more favorable economic conditions or modest advances in technology would greatly increase reserves by permitting the exploitation of vest quantities of leaner or deeper or otherwise less valuable mineral deposits. But for lead and zinc, Netschert and Landsberg concluded that either: "(1) there is relatively little material below present cutoff grades; [or] (2) such material exists, but for some reason there are no data.? 2/ This situation, which they called "the lead-zinc anomaly" has been subsequently discussed by other authors. The purpose of this paper is to carry the discussion further by examining the evidence in favor of (1) and (2) and by advancing a third alternative.

This study investigated the performance of citric acid as lixiviant for cathode material from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Black mass containing 84.2 weight percent MNC (LiNi0.45Mn0.4Co0.15O2) and 15.8 weight percent LCO (LiCoO2) material was leached at solid-to-liquid ratios of 20, 50 and 100 g/L. Leaching with 1.5 M citric acid, 2 volume percent H2O2 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20 g/L at 95 °C extracted 90 percent Co, 95 percent Li, 94 percent Mn and 94 percent Ni within 20 min. At the highest solid-to-liquid ratio of 100 g/L with 1.5 M citric acid, 10 volume percent H2O2 and 95 °C, 84 percent Al, 84 percent Co, 87 percent Li, 86 percent Mn and 96 percent Ni were leached after 40 min, producing a leach solution containing 0.68 g/L Al, 20.0 g/L Co, 6.0 g/L Li, 13.6 g/L Mn and 19.3 g/L Ni. Using stepwise addition of H2O2, instead of initial bulk addition, did not significantly improve the leaching efficiency but did reduce the required leaching time. Temperature control of the reactor was also more manageable with stepwise addition of H2O2, and evolution of gas was less vigorous. It was observed that the leaching efficiencies of Co, Li and Mn decreased slightly at solid-to-liquid ratios of 50 and 100 g/L, while the leaching of Ni increased slightly. The solution leached at 20 g/L could be stored for six weeks without any spontaneous precipitation. However, solutions leached at 50 and 100 g/L showed changes in concentration after one month of storage, suggesting that processes that have a large material throughput and use high solid-to-liquid ratios around 100 g/L must ensure that the solutions are not stored for extended periods of time.

The hydrodynamic bearing was first described by, Reynolds in 1886, and has since been widely applied in motors, engines, compressors, hydroelectric turbines, and other machinery. For various reasons, the hydrostatic bearing currently predominates in the large, horizontal rotating machinery field (e.g. grinding mills). However, the current industry trend towards increasing size and energy efficiency has resulted in renewed interest in the advantages of hydrodynamic bearings. These advantages include structural improvements, reduced bearing friction, improved bearing life, improved transient characteristics, and reduced lubricant pump size and power requirements. In particular, the higher energy efficiency results in substantial savings on large machines. This paper describes some aspects of the design of large hydrodynamic bearings based on thirty years, of experience in the design of such bearings on grinding mills ranging in journal size from 2.1 m to 6.4 m, see Table 1.
