"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. INTRODUCTION Hydropower development of Jiu river in Romania, in the narrow gorge sector includes two diversion HPP and a small hydro plant that provides the minimum required flow downstream: CHE Dumitra , CHE Bumbesti and MHC Livezeni (Table 1. Hydropower parameters).The Livezeni intake reservoir is provided by a gated dam located 1250 m downstream of merging point between Jiul de Vest river and Jiul de Est river. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. The Conda Partnership's Dry Valley Phosphate mine is a thinly bedded, multiple seam, open pit mining operation where selective mining techniques are used to recover phosphatic shales. The mining methods used are truck/shovel and scraper/ dozer operations. The ore that is mined is shipped 32 km (20 miles) by rail to a beneficiation facility which upgrades the ore via washing and calcining. The mine and beneficiation complexes are owned by the Conda Partnership. The Conda Partnership is a joint venture between Beker Industries Corp. of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Western Co-Operative Fertilizers (U.S.) Inc. of Alberta, Canada. The Conda Partnership operates as a separate entity from the two partners.

For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.

The performance of high alumina refractory subjected to high compressive loads and high temperatures is an area in which operating experience is quite limited. This paper documents the results of five months of operation of a combustion chamber lined with 83 pct alumina brick subjected to compressive stresses as high as 45psi and hot face temperatures of about 2750°F. It also describes a method for predicting long term subsidence results based on the limited information available in standard hot load limit tests. Descriptions of the chamber itself and the pilot plant upon which its design was based are included.

Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. An experimental hole-to-hole seismic probe system has been developed for use in coal measure geology as a means of determining the structural conditions of coal seams. The source probe produces a 500-joule electric arc discharge whose seismic wavelet has a spectrum in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range. Low compliance hydrophones contained in the source probe as well as in a separate seismic detector probe are matched to the frequency range of the source. Both probes are constructed with 5-72 cm diameter housings. The transducers in the probes are equipped with fluid-inflatable boots to permit operation in either wet or dry boreholes. Preliminary tests in vertical boreholes drilled 213 m apart in sedimentary rock formations show reliable operation and useful seismic propagation measurements along horizontal and oblique paths up to 232 m in length. Because the seismic wave- let has an accurately repeatable waveshape, multiple shots and signal averaging techniques can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and extend the transmission distances.

At the No. 4 Mine of Jim Walter Resources in Tuscaloosa County in the North Central part of the State of Alabama, the Mary Lee and Blue Creek coal beds lay 2000 feet below the surface. The quantity of methane gas stored within the coal bed reservoir at this depth and released during development mining necessitates that each coal producing section be ventilated using large air quantities approaching 100,000 cfm. In order to meet coal contractural commitments in the early stages of mine development by installing the necessary number of continuous mining machine units and to develop the mine to projected air shaft sites, high pressure, large volume mine ventilating fans were required. This presentation discusses the installation start-up and changeover procedures when two size GAF 31.5-28-1 TLT-Babcock 3500 Horsepower fans with adjustable pitch in flight blades were put on line while phasing out two Jeffrey Mining Machine Company 8HUA 117 Fans. A graph will be presented to depict the most economic diameter shaft size under 2000 feet of cover with different air quantity requirements.

The various ion exchange reactions occurring during the restoration of formations contaminated with ammonia during in situ uranium leaching are reviewed. Data are presented on the restoration of a previously leached laboratory packed column using line saturated brine. Although this restoration fluid selectively and effectively removed the ammonia, 24.5 pore volumes are required to reduce the ammonia concentration from 500 to 3 ppm. The presence of NaCl in the restoration fluid is beneficial in + improving the selectivity of the system for NH removal and reducing ca++ ion consumption.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most refractory copper mineral when treated in conventional sulfate media leaching systems. This is the first study to examine the use of a dimethyl sulfoxide (CH3SOCH3, DMSO) solution containing copper chloride (CuCl2) for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Leaching experiments for a copper concentrate composed mainly of chalcopyrite were conducted at ambient pressure at 313–413 K. The leaching fractions of Cu, Fe, S, Au, and As were investigated. It was found that 90% of the Cu was extracted in 2 h, and 94% was extracted in 4 h at 373 K, which is competitive with other conventional processes. A DMSO solution containing CuCl2 could selectively dissolve the valuable metals Cu and Au from chalcopyrite, but leave minerals with little economic value such as pyrite (FeS2) and As in the residue. Chalcopyrite is oxidized by cupric ion in proportion to the stoichiometric ratio of Cu in the concentrate to the initial cupric ion in the DMSO solution, which is enhanced by the presence of oxygen below 373 K.

This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

Arch Mineral has developed several computer programs that aid the surface mine planning function. These programs are utilized to perform long term projections for various area or semi-area stripping operations. The program generated reports include yardage, tonnage, quality and ratio information for the user-specified time periods. The projections are used to anticipate the annual budget, to compare alternative mine plans and to analyze acquisition candidates. The programs are user friendly, fast and accurate. Geological Grid File Two data files must be set-up and used in conjunction with the mine planning programs. These are a geological data file and a general input file.

Common mineral resources (sand, gravel, crushed stone, etc.), which are so necessary for the construction of metropolitan areas, are rapidly being depleted or otherwise rendered unavailable in the very areas that need them most. However, the problem of planning for these resources involves a number of independent and dependent variables that must first be defined and related. Finally, a dollar value must be assigned where possible. Complex interrelationships between the variables and their dependence on outside factors has made mathematical "solution" of the problem of planning for non-renewable mineral resources difficult at the present time. Therefore, the use of computer simulation is suggested as a means by which this complex problem can be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to report on a continuing research program whose objectives are: (1) to delineate the factors involved in planning for the utilization of common mineral resources in urban-suburban environs; (2) to construct a planning model for these materials amenable to computer analysis, (3) evaluate the model by using test cases, and (4) perform a sensitivity analysis to determine the initial parameters in future planning for these materials.

Due to grade, overburden depth and stability and the presence of groundwater it was considered impractical to recover gold contained in unconsolidated palaeochannel sediments by conventional mining, dredging or borehole mining techniques. A series of field experiments was conducted to determine the feasibility of recovery of gold by in situ leaching from sediments located at a depth of about 80 metres. The test wellfield site and plant are described together with field test procedures, results and wellfield rehabilitation procedures. Choice of sodium cyanide as leachant and laboratory testing are discussed in relation to groundwater and sediment chemistry and problems encountered in field tests.

During the last ten years, Paques Inc. has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems to remove sulfur compounds from water and gaseous streams using biotechnological processes. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters in two biological steps. In the first step, sulfate-reducing bacteria converts sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The HS reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. In the second step, sulfide-oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. The Budelco Zinc Refinery in The Netherlands installed a groundwater treatment system to remove metals and sulfate using the biological steps described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 and has been treating 5,000 m3/d (180 thousand cu ft/day). A pilot plant began operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and for the selective copper recovery from leach water. Jigging is a separtion process that has already been described by Agricola in 1556. Fine size material is normally treated in a hutch jigging process, in which the heavy particles are penetrating the jigging bed and are recovered in the hutch. In this process, a ragging consisting of the same or higher specific gravity particles is inserted upon the screen. The ragging is used mainly as a valve to maintain a constant upward flow of the water. Since the heavy particles should pass easily into the hutch, the ragging particles are up to ten times larger than the maximum feed size (1). In the fine size range - 1 mm the performance of jigs is mainly insufficient; some of the low density particles percolate the ragging while the hutch water flow prevents the fine heavy particles from entering the bed (2). By giving a thin layer of particles, which posesses a density sensitivity in case of certain adjustment of flow conditions, directly on the screen, the precision of separation can be increased. Stroke length and frequency have to be adjusted to give this filter layer a homogenous porosity between 60 and 70% during the pulsion phase, and the "en masse" lifting of the bed, as it is known in jigging of coarser material, has to be prevented (3). In this case, the jig cycle is only of minor influence.

This paper describes the geology and geotechnics associated with construction of the Thames Tunnel, part of the UK’s Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). The 2.5km long twin tunnels run beneath the river Thames at depths of up to 40m and are currently under construction. They pass through varying geology comprising alluvium, terrace gravels and chalk with flints and are currently being bored using Herrenknecht mixshield slurry tunnel boring machines (TBM’s). This paper outlines the lithology and engineering properties of each geological formation and describes the geotechnical processes, potential hazards and difficulties experienced in the works. A summary is given into the extent of the investigative work in terms of route selection, tunnel design, TBM optimisation and further details are provided on the geotechnical aspects associated with the construction of the tunnel approach structures and the tunnels.

I.- In order to keep pace feeding its fast growing population, Mexico with only about 20% of its surface suitable for intensive agriculture, will need the application of modern foodgrowing techniques. To assure greater crop yields it will be necessary to apply more fertilizers than used at present (yearly average of 29 Kgs/hectare)** For its fertilizers production Mexico still depends mostly on imports of phosphate concentrates from Florida, U.S.A., Morocco and Spain. To reduce or eliminate this dependence on foreign providers, the Consejo de Recursos Minerales -a Federal Government exploration Institute- started in 1974 an exhaustive exploration program for phosphate deposits more amenable to commercial exploitation than the phosphatic limestones contained within the La Caja Formation of Upper Jurassic, found along the Sierra Madre Oriental. After studying literature on the origin and deposition of marine phosphate and visits to deposits in Florida, U.S.A., the Baja California peninsula was selected as most favorable for starting this program because of its geologic and sedimentary history and also for its geographic location, where the cold California and warm Counterequatorial currents meet. Exploration activities executed by FORNOS, S. A. (1956) led to the disco very of low grade phosphate (3 to 5% P2O5) in the recent beach sands along the Bahia de Magdalena (Fig. # 1). In his doctoral thesis Bruno D'Anglejan Chatillon (1965) reports the presence of nodular phosphate on the continental shelf, between Isla Margarita and the Vizcaino peninsula. He estimated reserves of up to 1.5 million tons. A Mexican-American marine exploration company attempted in 1966 the evaluation of this deposit with negative results.

Control is a vital management function by which operations are brought into compliance with predetermined standards to achieve the goals of an enterprise. Events that are characterized by a low degree of expectation, avoidability, and intent necessarily have a low degree of control. Such events are difficult not only to predict but to control as well. Fortunately, very few industrial situations fall into that category of events. It is an axiom of control technology that in order to control, one must first measure; further to measure, one must know the characteristics of the subject (or environment) upon which the measurement must be made. Finally, if measurements are to be made reliably, the influences that affect the measurement must be known and, if possible, understood. The complete control cycle therefore consists of the following: (1) defining the objective, (2) planning to achieve the objective, (3) putting the plan into practice with appropriate instructions, (4) measuring variables or parameters of interest, (5) transmitting and transforming the measurements to analyze the system's status and to predict the future outcome, (6) comparing these with the defined objective, and (7) determining and taking corrective actions to bring the actual results closer to the objective. The management principle underlying the control cycle is the principle of management by exception. The application of the principle and the frequency with which corrective actions are taken vary according to the purposes of the review and control. For example, the control of a machine operation (e.g., truck on a haul road) may require adjustments and therefore data, analysis, and decisions, in intervals of seconds whereas the review for ore-grade control may take several hours. Reviews, on the other hand, for cost control may be done in intervals of weeks or months. In any case, three specific purposes of the control cycle are: (1) to correct the operation so that it follows the accepted plan closely, (2) to evaluate the operation and predict future outcomes in light of changes in the environment or of more experience, and (3) to review the objectives and modify these to be reasonable and realistic.

In 1981, a gas outburst accident occurred in the Yubari Shintanko coal mine, the only expectant mine in Japan, it caused 93 deaths. As a result, Yubari Shintanko closed in 1982. This major disaster was a turning point for sustainability of Yubari City, the largest coalfield in Japan. Finally, Yubari City was bankrupted in 2007. This paper aims to explore how miner’s children experienced this disaster and felt about region, family, and themselves, and to explain the relation between region declining and children’s lives. The data of this paper are the archived 600 essays, written by the junior high school students at the time of the disaster. There are three findings. First, the children who lost their father were the most shocked. They faced profound sadness. But they expressed that they had decided to overcome their sadness with surviving family. Second, the children who didn’t lose their father were also influenced. They were anxious about the future of Yubari, their family, and themselves. Furthermore, they decided to strive for their future. Third, they understood the disaster as a turning point of Yubari declining and looked ahead their future outside of Yubari. In conclusion, this disaster created their hopelessness to Yubari region and, as a result, promoted the decline of the city through their migration to other city. Furthermore, it is important to clarify that Yubari City has to continue the struggle to the regeneration.
