The term olivine was first used in 1790 by J. Werner, and the corresponding mineral was so named because of its olive-green color (Hunter, 1941). Olivine is the principal component of the rock known as dunite. While by classic definition dunite is composed of 90% or more olivine, commercial use of these terms has resulted in more specific definitions. Commercially, the term olivine is used to designate a material that consists of 85% or more forsterite and contains 45 to 50% MgO, 39 to 42% SiO2, 5 to 8% Fe2O3, and has an ignition loss (LOI) of 1 to 2%. The term dunite designates a rock that contains 36 to 45% MgO, 36 to 39% SiO2, and has an ignition loss of as much as 10% (Teague, 1983). GEOLOGY Olivine is found in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks whose age varies from pre-Ordovician to Tertiary. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to the dunite variety of the peridotite group of ultrabasic igneous rocks. Olivine also occurs in basic igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt, and diabase and more rarely as an accessory mineral in granite and metamorphosed crystalline limestones. Mineralogy The term olivine refers to a group of orthosilicate minerals in isomorphous series with magnesium-rich forsterite (Mg2Si04) as one end member and iron-rich fayalite (Fe,SiO,) as the other. In most olivines the ratio of magnesium to iron varies from 16: 1 to 2: 1. Commercial olivine deposits contain a mixture of forsterite and fayalite with the fayalite content restricted to less than 15% (Reed, 1959; Teague, 1983). Accessory constituents may include primary minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, diopside, chromite, and garnet and secondary minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, talc, and vermiculite as alteration products. Chemical and Physical Properties The chemical composition of olivine can be expressed as either (Mg, Fe), SiO, or 2(Mg, Fe)O.SiO,. Table 1 presents chemical analyses for some commercial olivines. The physical properties of olivine are shown in Table 2. Distribution of Major Deposits Commercial olivine and dunite deposits are found in Norway, Japan, Spain, India, Italy, the United States, Sweden, Austria, Pakistan, and Mexico. Noncommercial deposits have been reported in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, New Caledonia, Greece, Brazil, and Canada (Teague, 1983). The present markets for olivine are characterized by low unit value, high volume, and high sensitivity to freight costs, so few deposits are commercially viable. Literature from the USSR indicates that considerable research on olivine refractories is being done. (Afansa'ev, 1988), lending credibility to the conjecture that commercial deposits are being mined there. In eastern Canada synthetic olivine is being produced by calcining chrysotile asbestos mine tailings. In the United States numerous lenses of olivine extend in a belt from northeast Georgia northeastward across western North Carolina. Total reserves in North Carolina and Georgia are estimated at between 125 and 200 Mt. The largest US deposit is Twin Sisters Mountain, located in Whatcom and Skagit Counties in the state of Washington. This deposit, which has an outcrop area of 93 km2 and a relief of about 1 525 m. is estimated to contain 1 800 Mt of fresh, unaltered olivine (Teague, 1983). In addition, the US Bureau of Mines reports reserves of 50 Mt on Cypress Island in the state of Washington, and the literature reports eight complexes in southeastern Alaska, some containing cores of olivine as large as 1.6 km in diameter (Taylor, Jr., 1967). The world's largest deposit of olivine occurs in the Aaheim area of Norway, where reserves are estimated at a 2 000 Mt. Several other Norwegian deposits contain as much as 5 Mt each. In Japan the production of ultrabasic rocks is currently about 6 Mtpy, but the bulk of this output is serpentinite. Olivineldunite accounts for only 17% of this production. The major olivine deposit in Japan is located at Horoman Hill on the northern island of Hokkaido. Reserves at this deposit are estimated at 100 Mt (Anon., 1990). Spain is one of the largest producers of dunite. Reserves in the La Coruna District in northwestern Spain are estimated at 100 Mt. India, also a major dunite producer, has a large deposit at Salem in Tamil Nadu. In Italy olivine/dunite is mined from a deposit near Turin. In Sweden the largest deposit is at Arutats and is reported to be comparable in size to the Twin Sisters deposit in the United States. At present the only production in Sweden is from a deposit 30 km south of the town of Gallivare. Reserves at this deposit are reported to be between 1 and 2 Mt. Other significant deposits are: 1) in Austria at St. Stefan near Leoben, 2) in the Swat District of the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan, and 3) in Mexico at Cuidad Victoria in Tamaulipas (Anon., 1990).

I spent 41 years as a geologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS) conducting geologic studies and preparing peer reviewed maps and reports describing the results of those studies. Since retiring from the USGS in 2011, I have been a consultant specializing in aggregates and other industrial minerals. Consequently, I have had the opportunity and pleasure to apply the information contained in those kinds of geologic maps and reports to real-life situations. About half of my consulting is performing due diligence for mineral resource evaluations of one type or another where resource information has been provided by the property owner. Many of those jobs necessitate that I conduct desktop studies followed by field work. I then use my information to review and comment on the written reports of others; reports variably referred to as geologic reports, resource studies, reserve analyses, and so forth. While there are many well written reports addressing geologic resource issues, I was surprised to see that there are also a significant number of so-called geologic reports that only pay cursory attention to geology. Unfortunately, that lack of rigorous geologic investigation commonly leads to erroneous conclusions. This paper addresses three such reports covering concrete sand, metallurgical gravel, and proppants (frac sand). Although all three examples are located in the Gulf Coastal Plain Province, I do not reveal the exact location of any of the properties for purposes of confidentiality. Furthermore, I have generalized the site descriptions and illustrations. However, all the descriptions faithfully define the geologic situation.

Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012), and this research is being presented in a series of papers. The first paper (Park and Nelson, 2013a) identified the variables associated with risk in mining projects, and their effects and was published in the October issue of Mining Engineering magazine. The second (Park and Nelson, 2013b) discussed methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables (published at www.me.smenet.org), and presented a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. This paper will present an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved.

As a result of the enactment of the Federal. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 1, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) has been carrying out research in the "field of coal mine health". The National Institute (formerly Bureau) for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was designated the agency within HEW to be responsible for such research activities. One of the early programs sponsored by NIOSH was undertaken by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard University School of Public Health participating as a subcontractor to Eastern. This program on Coal Mine Respiratory Protective Devices, which started on June 30, 1970, had five major objectives as follows: a. to determine current status of respirator usage with respect to duration and frequency, types. and maintenance b. to determine acceptability ( and reasons therefor) of currently used units c. to determine protection factors provided by respirators worn by working miners d. to make recommendations on ways to improve existing units, or on research needed to develop new types of respiratory protective devices for coal miners e. to provide recommendations to mine management on more effective use of respiratory protective devices

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project in 1988. This was prompted by numerous complaints from the residents in the vicinity of the project, and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods utilized by two major contractors who are driving 20 km (12.5 of tunnel along with drilling over 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts on design, construction, schedule, cost, and the environment are detailed.

The trend towards proportionately rising volumes of surface mining through- out the world and especially in the United States has led some observers to predict that the future of underground mining is quite limited. Certainly, the simple extrapolation of current trends1 gives evidence of a compelling sort for the hypothesis that technological progress is proceeding at a faster pace in surface than in underground mining. This paper attempts to examine the basis for these predictions by searching the historical record on differential rates of productivity as these are observed in iron ore and coal mining. In recent years economists have discussed "technology gaps" among industries or segments of the same industry, by which they mean that mechanisms for invention and its diffusion are faulty or retarded in such a way that feasible cost-cutting innovations are not applied or developed, even though technicians regard them as practical.2

It is prudent to interpret atmospheric monitoring signals in real time for checking the safe limits of the air conditions in underground mines. In gassy mines, real-time evaluation increases the safety of operations. In all mines, continuous monitoring and evaluation contributes to maintaining air conditions within healthy and safe limits. Signal interpretation for safety conditions in mines is difficult for many reasons. An increase in hazardous contaminant concentrations can be predicted by signal pattern recognition, root cause analysis of rapid changes toward deterioration, and forward prediction in time using algorithms and numerical models. The paper describes an early warning system for analyzing monitored signal patterns continuously in real time as well as forward predicting the various environmental and working conditions to recognize dangerous trends that may affect safety and health in underground mines. A dynamic, numerical ventilation model with heat and gas contaminant simulation components is used for the analysis of atmospheric data. Methods and test results are discussed with numerical examples for signal propagation prediction. Several mine examples are studied using controlled, synthetic data for malfunction simulations to evaluate time delays between the detection time of suspicious signal trends and the time of dangerous threshold crossing marking an accident scenario. Delay time is found in the order of 20 min in the examples, signifying the useful time period for preventive intervention between EWS warning and the likely breakout of a following accident.

Ore at the Magmont Mine in southeast Missouri is extracted by the room and pillar method on two and sometimes three horizons. In 1991, an innovative plan was formulated for recovery of high grade ore in pillars using cable bolts to accommodate spans of more than 27 m (90 ft). A test area was subsequently selected and a recovery plan developed. A cooperative rock mechanics study effort by COMINCO METALS, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was later established. When initially opened in 1968, the planned production rate was about 1,000,000 tons per year. Due to declining reserves, the production rate was decreased to 630,000 tons per year in November 1992. Pillar recovery now accounts for approximately 40%-50% of the mined tonnage and plays a vital role in allowing Magmont to continue to operate.

The steepness of an openpit mine’s slopes has a substantial influence on the mine’s financial return. This paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross section within each rock layer: that is, the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here, instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is used to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth-varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties and factor of safety (FoS).

Since the advent of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for treatment of uranium-bearing ores in the 1950?s to current carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processing of gold values, metallurgies and operators alike have wrestled with the problem of interstage screening. Early gold CIP plants such as at Homestake utilized externally mounted vibrating screens in conjunction with air lifts to effect carbon-pulp disengagement. Other operations world-wide have likewise adopted this technique with varying degrees of success. Introduction This text is intended to provide the operator and turnkey contractor with the basic data for sizing vibrating screens to be used in ore crushing plants. The basic capacities, modifying factors, etc.. used in the area requirement calculations were developed empirically and modified to their present values based upon years of practical applications. It must be pointed out that screening is much more of an art than an exact science; however. the information presented here should provide for reasonably accurate screen sizing when applied to many metallic ores. Types of Screens There are two types of screens which can be used for strictly sizing applications. These are two- and four-bearing screens; both are inclined circle-throw machines. DR iron') is a generic term for metallized product that results from the direct or solid state reduction of iron ore. In direct reduction, iron oxides are reduced to metallic iron in the solid state without an intermediate melting step. MIDREX ® Iron is the DR iron material produced in the MIDREX ® Direct Reduction Process. Except for some thermal and mechanical degradation, the external physical form of as-reduced DR iron is the same as the feed material. Chemically, oxygen associated with iron is removed leaving a very porous structure. Figure 1 is the scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal surface of a MIDREX Iron pellet obtained from a Swedish oxide pellet during reduction at 760 °C. Figure 2 is the SEM of a polished and etched cross-section through the same pellet showing the amount of intraparticle porosity. As a result of this high porosity, apparent density of DR iron is relatively low, typically a¬round 2 g/cm3, and specific surface is extremely high, typically around 1.0 m2/g or more. Both density and specific surface depend on the raw materi¬al and the operating conditions of the direct reduction plant. Normally, more than 97% of the available iron is reduced into metallic iron with the rest mainly in the form of wustite (FeO). During direct reduction, the gangue in the iron remains essentially unchanged. Removal of oxygen and the corre¬sponding reduction in weight result in a slightly higher percentage gangue in the product than in the raw material.

More than 100,000 people from 110 countries involved in the construction aggregates and ready mix concrete industries are expected to attend Conexpo-Conlagg '99 in Las Vegas, NV March 23-27. The exhibition, the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, takes place every three years. It is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton Center and Pavilion. The show serves as a venue for con- tractors and others involved in aggregates construction to view the latest in equipment, technology and services. More than 1,500 exhibitors will use more than 147,200 m2 (1.6 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibit space. Attendees include presidents and company owners, sales and marketing managers, general managers and project managers. An estimated 20% of the attendees will be from outside of the United States. New for the Conexpo-Conlagg '99 show is a 3,715- m2 (40,000-sq ft) Information Technology Pavilion. This event, organized by AIEIC Systems, will showcase computer technology for the architectural, engineering and construction industries. Shown in the pavilion will be the latest developments in cost management, estimating, bidding, project management and accounting. In addition, the Information Technology Pavilion will demonstrate the latest in computer-aided design software, systems and services. Conexpo-Codagg '99 will also emphasize live demonstrations of exhibitor's products. Individual exhibitors will demonstrate their machinery so attendees can see the latest technology in action. Because the Conexpo-Codagg exposition is so large, "shows within a show" have been created to help attendees locate the products and services best suited to their interests. Sublevel stoping generally is a large-scale open stoping method. It sometimes is referred to as long-hole or blasthole stoping. This method usually is applied to strong ore bodies that require minimal support and are surrounded by strong country rock. The ore body should be fairly regular in shape and well-defined. The dip of the footwall normally should be sufficient to allow broken ore to gravitate freely, although the method has been adapted successfully to mine some of the flatter ore bodies. Sublevel stoping is not dependent on the width of the ore body. Widths of less than 6 m (20 ft), however, make the utilization of long-hole drilling techniques more difficult. The main criteria for sublevel open stoping are competent ore and stable host rock, regular ore boundaries, and a footwall dip that exceeds the angle of repose of broken ore. Basically, the method entails providing access to the ore body at various subintervals between the main haul- age levels in order to drill and blast the intervening ore. Stope drilling is carried out from drilling drifts on the sublevels, and the ore is blasted in slices towards an open face, which generally is vertical on the downholes and may be inclined towards the open face for the up holes. The blasted ore gravitates to the bottom of the stope and is collqcted through drawpoints. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical sublevel stoping mine. The method requires extensive ore body development with relatively high capital expenditures. How- ever, much of the development is in ore, and production costs are comparatively low. Productivity rates are in the 13.6 to 27.2 t (15 to 30 st)/manshift range. The drilling, blasting, and loading operations are performed independently, and equipment utilization is high. Large outputs can be obtained with few units and limited personnel. Dilution with waste rock may occur if ore boundaries are irregular or if caving occurs, but 100% of the ore within the stope usually is recovered. Pillar recovery sometimes is a problem. It is at this point that most of the waste dilution occurs. At the time data was gathered for this report (1973), the sublevel open stoping method was used by more than 21% of the metallic ore mines in the US (9 out of 42 mines producing 1088 + t/day (1200 + stpd) and provided more than 12% of the total metallic ore production from these mines. DEVELOPMENT Access to a sublevel open stope mine is gained by a slope or shaft that is normally sunk in the footwall of the ore zone, away from any possible effects from blasting or other production operations in the stoping process. Main level interval is selected and usually varies from 45.7 to 121.9 m (150 to 400 ft), depending on the vertical extent of the ore body, the number of drawpoints required to maintain output, and the eventual stope height. The main haulage drifts are located at the bottom of the stope horizon, either directly in ore or in the footwall, with access crosscuts at intervals. Raises are driven up through the ore to connect to the level above and provide access and ventilation to the sublevel drilling drifts, which are driven horizontally in the ore for the length of the stope. Depending on the drawpoint system to be used, the stope is either undercut by a raise-and-cone system, from a scram or slusher drift, or simply provided with a drilling drift from which access is made at intervals to the main haulage level. A raise driven either at the end or in the middle of the stope (if stope access is from both ends) provides a start for opening up a vertical slot across the stope to establish a free or open face for long-hole drilling and blasting. Sublevel stoping has proved to be a relatively safe and economical system.

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

The Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) is the next major phase of the DC Clean Rivers Program. The design-build PRT project includes a 5.5-mile-long, 18-foot-internaldiameter tunnel, seven shafts, and two underground connections to existing structures. Major challenges include tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation though mixed-face conditions within a buried paleo-channel and an approximately 1,350-foot-long rock/ soil transition zone; construction beneath the elevated Whitehurst Freeway; tunneling beneath an existing luxury residential building and existing transit tunnels with limited clearance; and complex coordination with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders. This paper describes the overall project scope, geotechnical conditions along the alignment, and primary design/construction challenges and mitigations.

Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slip forming placement technique, lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/h (98 fph). The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm or 4 in.) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm or 12 in.). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to operate remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 m.y. ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. 3 A total of more than 200 km of silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.5 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later +I2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma or connate water or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury has not been identified. Later oxidation of the sulfide minerals and redistribution of the supergene minerals corderoite, several mercury nitro-oxychlorides, marcasite, iron, and titanium oxides in the sedimentary rocks account for most of the newly discovered ore body at Cordero.

Relatively large amounts of such hydrocarbons as fuel oils are often needed in flotation of low rank coals. The amount of oil can be decreased considerably by using surfactants as promotors. The reagents which are good candidates as surfactants to promote hydrophobicity can also act as emulsifying and wetting agents. Since the physical and chemical variables influence various sub-processes in different ways, their influence on the performance parameters is complex. The results of laboratory tests are presented to show that the dual role of reagents can be judiciously exploited to increase both the recovery and grade of clean coal. The mode and order of reagent addition is critical in enhancing their efficacy as flotation promotors. The results demonstrate the benefits of proper conditioning of the pulp prior to flotation.
