"The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM) announced the 2018 National Mining Hall of Fame inductees. This year’s inductees, selected by the National Mining Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors, represent exploration, extraction, management, education and research and development in the U.S. mining industry. Their contributions have had significant and lasting impacts on the mineral and mining industry; these individuals were selected for being mavericks, thought leaders, researchers, educators, mentors, wealth builders and philanthropists.Professor John M. Guilbert, Dr. Leo J. Miller, Robert E. (Bob) Murray and Douglas (Doug) B. Silver will join 240 other mining industry luminaries when formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame on Sept. 29, 2018. Additionally, the Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award will be presented to the Freeport- McMoRan Foundation. Guilbert was a renowned geologist and professor of economic geology at the University of Arizona; he had a distinguished 50-plus year career in academia and business. Guilbert, together with J. David Lowell, worked on the most important breakthrough in mineral exploration in the last 100 years, the Porphyry Copper Model. This work, known as the Lowell and Guilbert Model, was utilized by exploration geologists worldwide over the next four decades to discover hundreds of millions of tons of copper metal and numerous profitable mines including the prosperous Bajo de la Alumbrera copper mine in Argentina. Guilbert was a founder of The World Museum of Mining in Butte, MT. He was the recipient of countless awards including the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) R.A.F. Penrose Medal as well as the D.C. Jackling Award from the SME.Dr. Leo J. Miller was a maverick in the mining industry and no armchair geologist. He believed that active fieldwork, on foot with a rock pick, was indispensable for exploration. His basic tenet was to absorb as much information about an exploration target up front, formulate ideas – sometimes novel ones — and then get out into the field to prove those ideas. Miller was known to diverge from the standard interpretation of the geological processes, which formed the mineral deposits, and to apply innovative applications of high-tech tools to more usual exploration programs. This approach resulted in a 50-plus year career that included the discovery of the Kidd Creek massive sulfide deposit and the development of the Lee Creek phosphate deposit; which other explorers had previously given up on, believing whatever phosphate might be present would be too difficult and expensive to mine. The recipient of many honors and awards, Miller received the SME Robert M. Dreyer award in recognition of outstanding achievement in ore discoveries."

The segregation process has been known for many years and applied industrially for the treatment of various refractory copper ores. The principles of the process are briefly reviewed; the process was tested in the laboratory on two copper-cobalt oxide ores from Gecamines, Shaba Province, Zaire. Various parameters of the process, such as segregation temperature, dosage of reducing and chloridizing agents and flotation conditions were inyestigated. Experimental results have shown that the segregation of copper could proceed satisfactorily at low temperature (1000° K) but that of cobalt required higher temperature and higher additions of reducing and chloridizing agents.

It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

Enclosed cab filtration systems are typically used on mobile mining equipment to reduce miners? exposure to airborne dusts and diesel particulates generated during mining operations. Various filter configurationscan be used within the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of cabs to remove the airborne contaminants. The air cleaning performance of cab filtration systems is highly dependent on the efficiency of the air filters, the number of filters used and their placement within the HVAC system. This paper shows how to mathematically model cab filtration systems and illustrates a methodology for developing other cab filtration system design models. Node diagrams of several filtration system circuits are illustrated with their mathematical models at steady state airflow and concentration conditions. Laboratory and field data are presented to demonstrate the validity and utility of modeling enclosed cab air cleaning performance. The paper concludes that incorporating multiple filters throughout the HVAC system improves the air cleaning performance and robustness of the cab filtration system design

Water is increasingly recognized as a critical issue for sustainable development, becoming as important as carbon to corporate responsibility and reputation. Although the cement industry’s overall ‘water footprint’ is relatively small compared to other sectors, the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD/CSI) has recognized the importance of water and the need to take actions towards efficient water management, with developing standardizing practices and employing a risk-based assessment approach, mostly at local level where individual facilities and activities can have implications for other water users in the area. Sharrcem, a member of the Titan Cement Group, has made significant investments to upgrade its production facilities, the technological process and apply environmentally friendly technologies. Under this frame, Sharrcem implemented a project for the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Cement Plant facilities, which has been successfully operating since early 2016. This paper discusses the technology applied at the new WWTP and the results achieved already, with significant improvement in the quality of the treated water, as compared to the previous situation where untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the nearby Dimce Stream. The WWTP project is a major investment of Sharrcem that aims to improve the quality of the discharged water effluents and thus prevent potential river pollution and overall protect the environment and the health of Sharrcem employees and local community. The WWTP operates with the Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR) technology, is fully automated and has been also connected with few households of the neighboring community to treat also their sewage water. The plant can be expanded in the future – to connect with additional households - without increasing the size of the treatment tanks. One of the benefits of this project is that by removing a variety of contaminants from water it becomes usable again, depending on the nature of the contaminants and the end use of the water treated. According to the monitoring results the treated water that comes out of the WWTP fully meets quality requirements according to the EU and local limit values standards

INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. INTRODUCTION The British mining industry comprises 228 nationalised coal mines producing some 113 million tonnes of deep mined coal and employing 242,600 persons of whom 185,200 work below ground. There are in addition 174 small privately-owned coal mines employing 1500 persons underground and producing 1.5 million tones of coal. In the non-coal sector there are 108 privately-owned mines producing some 20 different minerals, including tin, wolfram, fluorspar, potash, rock salt, china clay, ball clay and fireclay. There are currently 4,100 persons employed in these mines of whom 2,346 are employed below ground. One mine producing potash employs 870 persons of whom 465 are underground workers. Since 1975 all matters relating to the health and safety of persons at work and of the general public who are exposed to industrial hazards have come within the purview of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate (MQI) is a constituent part of that organisation and enforces legislation applicable to all mines and quarries. The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) is a statutory and independent body that was established in 1970 to advance knowledge and provide information and advice about radiological protection. The NRPB has an agency agreement with HSE to provide advice and services relating to radiological protection, including protection against exposure to radon decay products in mines. There are as yet no statutory requirements controlling exposure to this source of radiation in Britain. Investigations for the presence of radon in British coal mines were begun in the mid 195Os. The concentrations found were of low order, typically around 2 pCi/l (Duggan et al., 1968). This was not surprising since big coal mines are well ventilated to control methane and airborne dust and it is now generally accepted that radon and its decay products do not constitute a health hazard in British coal mines. At one or two small mines where igneous intrusions were in close proximity to the coal workings, slightly higher readings were recorded. The MQI then commissioned NRPB to make investigations at metalliferous mines and in these much higher readings were detected. It was later agreed that the NRPB should undertake a survey of all non-coal mines in Britain to establish the extent of the problem. This survey was conducted mainly in 1973, (Strong et al.,1975) and follow-up surveys at various mines have since been conducted by the MQI. These investigations revealed that radon readings could be high in mines producing tin, haematite and fluorspar. Some small mines working other minerals in the same localities also showed high readings. More recently owners have been making environmental measurements at mines where there was some cause for concern. LEGISLATION AND RADIATION STANDARDS As a result of the survey work for MQI the Board in 1975 recommended an occupational limit of 4 WLM in a year from radon decay products together with a programme of radiological supervision (Strong et al., 1975). The MQI accepted the recommendation and advised employers and employees that the 4 WLM limit should be adopted. The limit corresponds to a concentration of 0.3 WL, equivalent to 30 pCi/l of radon-222 in equilibrium with the decay products, and was in accordance with an earlier recommendation by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1959). ICRP recommendations are usually endorsed in Britain. It was recognised that some years would probably be required to achieve general compliance, and this is proving to be the case. Some confusion has been caused in Britain by the conflict between successive Euratom Directives on this and other standards of safety. As relative newcomers to the Community, we were not affected by earlier Directives, but the situation is different now. In 1959, the Commission of the European Communities provisionally recommended a maximum permissible concentration for radon-222 and daughters of 3 x 10-7 µCi/cm3, which corresponds to 300 pCi/l (CEC, 1959). The number was affirmed in 1962 (CEC, 1962) and reaffirmed in 1966 (CEC, 1966) but without any specification of the state of equilibrium. In 1976, the CEC again recommended 300 pCi/l, but on this occasion, the daughters were assumed to be present in the same quantities as in unfiltered air (CEC, 1976): this implies 40 WLM a year in poorly-ventilated mines. The formula is repeated in the latest version of the Directive (CEC, 1980), but the value is now said to be an interim one because it might not ensure compliance with the appropriate dose limit. ICRP (1955) recommended 300 pCi/l in equilibrium with the decay products in 1955 and reduced this value to 30 pCi/l for unfiltered air in 1959 (ICRP, 1959), endorsed it for equilibrium conditions in 1976 (ICRP, 1976), and held to it until 1980: these values imply respectively 40 and 4 WLM a year. The recent recommendation of the ICRP (1980) that the annual limit of intake for the decay products should be 0.02 J in a year corresponds to 5 WLM, but there is a rider that reduction should be made for exposure to gamma rays and long-lived airborne radioactivity. An allowance of 20% is suggested for uranium mines, implying 4 WLM a year for the decay products. The

In situ mining is emerging as a potential alternative to conventional surf ace and underground mining techniques. A major factor in determining recoveries by in situ mining is the proportion of ore minerals that can be contacted and solubilized by the leach solutions. To provide basic information on the processes occurring during in situ leaching, particularly at the microscopic scale, the Bureau of Mines has developed a geologic characterization research program. This includes laboratory experiments using leaching apparatus that can accommodate whole core samples. Whole core experiments result in higher leach solution-ore mineral contact ratios than packed column experiments, and also allow for the assessment of permeability changes taking place as the result of mineral dissolution, precipitation, and clay swelling within the flow channels in the rock. A nonreactive, reusable reaction cell has been designed and tested. The leaching apparatus can be used for constant-pressure or constant-flow experiments and allows for the control of flow rate, pressure, and temperature during the experiments, thus permitting studies on a wide variety of ore samples. Details of the experimental apparatus and design are presented, as well as preliminary results from the first series of experiments on an oxide copper ore from the Casa Grande, AZ, area.

Despite ongoing digitization and “hardware” technological advances, geotechnical uncertainty remains the most significant risk in underground and tunnel construction. And, whilst they are commonly held up as an example of the sophistication of the industry, the practice of drafting and using geotechnical baseline reports is subject to a wide range of influences, not all of which support good risk management. Uncertainties in predicting ground behavior, the gap between the pre-construction assumptions, and the systemic response to construction remains a significant technical and communication challenge. Accordingly, this paper presents a framework to quantify geotechnical uncertainty using geostatistics and translate these into practical tools for ground risk management throughout planning, procurement and construction. Adopting even some of the principles of this framework should provide improvements to contract risk management and should assist to minimize the potential for commercial losses.

The Mississippian Salem Limestone, from which dimension stone is quarried in Indiana, is principally a calcarenitic rock formed of fossil bryozoans, echinoderms, and specimens of Endothyra. Numerical associations of the fossils, binding materials, oölitically coated fossils, and voids were determined by counting points on the surfaces of 278 thin sections of the limestone. Median sizes, coefficients of sorting, and skewness numbers were computed from measurements made of constituents in these thin sections. Many other samples and numerous exposures of the Salem and contiguous parts of adjacent formations also were studied. The organisms that furnished the skeletal material for formation of the Salem Limestone were chiefly gregarious and communal. Salem rocks are formed of nearly whole skeletons, of dismembered or slightly damaged skeletons, and of skeletons thoroughly ground up, because currents in the Salem sea varied in their ability to move and damage these materials. Locally the sediments are of uniform grain size because of sorting by currents and because related organisms grew to similar sizes. Rocks of the formation contain different proportions of the fauna both because the animals lived in these proportions and because their skeletons were mixed together by currents. The proportional relationships between members of the fauna were constant locally and for short periods of time. Study and mapping of the faunal associations, numbers of oölitically coated fossils, bedding structures, and size parameters enables geologists to suggest sedimentologic histories and sequences in areas of various sizes. Interpretations based upon such areal studies are necessary for evaluation of the dimension-stone potential within the Salem Limestone.

A process was developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal flotation and pyrite flotation leaving the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse, containing l0% S-30% C*, was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocyclone) may be used to increase the pyrite: coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimation shows a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse (Labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation were not included). The development of this process consisted of three parts: 1) exploratory tests, 2) optimization tests and 3) confirmatory tests.

"INTRODUCTION Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations has evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960’s-1970’s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980’s-1990’s . These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of “Operational Excellence”. Operational Excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining includes the following: • Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards • Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement. There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts. The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to affect the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process. This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement.THE RABBIT LAKE MINE AND MILL The Rabbit Lake Mine and Mill are located in northern Saskatchewan, Canada on the shores of Wollaston Lake (Figure 1).The mine was discovered in the mid-1960s and was built by Gulf Minerals, Ltd. The mill began processing uranium ore into yellowcake in 1975 from an adjacent open pit mine. A whole ore acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and precipitation forms the basic milling processes. The operation continued to produce yellowcake through a succession of open pits and finally opened an underground mine in the early 1990s. Since beginning production, over 200 million pounds of yellowcake has been packaged from the site, making it the sixth highest producing uranium mine of all time."

Because of its many advantages, roof bolting has been widely used in hard-rock underground mines. In this paper, the applicability of roof bolts to mine openings in frozen ground, and the affects of bolts on the stability of the openings are presented. A comprehensive finite-element program, ABAQUS, was used to analyze the temperature distribution, the stress field and the displacement, field around a mine opening. Openings that were supported by roof bolts and openings that were unsupported were both analyzed. The thermal and mechanical processes were treated as a quasi-coupled problem, with the thermal analyses being conducted first, followed by the mechanical analyses in each case. For the opening under consideration, i.e., a roof area of 15 m2, five to seven roof bolts are appropriate. When the number of bolts is less than five, the displacement within the ground can be improved only locally.

Increased emphasis has been placed on recycling consumer and industrial waste products. This trend has created a new industry that is focused on recovery/ separation of byproducts from waste material. As a result, interest has increased in the development of separation systems designed for the recycling industry. Much work has been done in this area. However, existing techniques developed for minerals beneficiation are often ignored. An example of is the foundry industry. There are currently more than 3,000 foundries in operation throughout the United States. Each consumes between 9 and 900 t/d (10 and 1,000 stpd) of sand for mold production. Either silica, chromite or zircon is, used in various combinations with chemical or clay binders. After casting, the sands are typically discarded into a landfill. This practice has become an environmental concern, especially the disposal of chromite and zircon. Silica sand is not environmentally sensitive. But it is used in greater abundance (6 to 7 Mt/a or 6.6 to 7.7 million stpy)and thus has prohibitive haulage and landfill costs. Current technology for sand reclamation involves thermal treatment to remove residual binders followed by dry mechanical attritioning (Leidel, 1993; Klein, 1994). This approach results in high losses due to fines generation and high costs associated with thermal treatment. As a result, this approach has shown only limited success. Stringent regulations are also affecting the disposal of secondary materials, such as plastics and metals. This is particularly true for the ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal industry. It plays a major role in industrial recycling of steel, aluminum and copper. Applications such as wire recycling present challenging problems since a hazardous byproduct (plastic insulation) is generated by the recycling.

Subsequent to the determination of an ultimate pit and ore reserves for metallic and nonmetallic deposits, it is necessary to develop the most profitable long-range mining sequence for the deposit. Long-range planning is a dynamic process because product prices and costs change, additional assay and metallurgical data become available, mining technology and operating prices and requirements change. The three case studies included in this subsection present different techniques for dealing with the objectives of long-range planning. To be able to forecast production, profitability, and capital requirements, it is essential to have a long-range mining plan.

Solid state reduction of roast movat chromite ore with carbon was carried out as a function of C/FeO ratio and temperature in the range 800°C to 900°C by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). A two stage mechanism, (1) the reduction of FeO present in Roast Movat with carbon monoxide; and (2) the regeneration of CO by the oxidation of carbon with CO2 was proposed. The rate controlling step is the carbon oxidation reaction. A kinetic equation, that of random nucleation, was proposed. The activation energy for the reduction was determined to be 55800 J/mole and is compared to those activation energies determined for other chromite ores.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of investment value or use value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would actually sell for if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation if market value is being appraised. The comparable sales and replacement cost methods used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail when used in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

This paper addresses the question ?What constitutes the right level of investment in community goodwill?? Mining companies are still grappling with this subject even though the business case for community investment has been accepted at a general level, as a strategy for competitive differentiation, risk mitigation and a desire to deliver - and to be seen to deliver - a ?net benefit? to affected communities. Gaining senior management commitment to long term social projects, by definition characterized by uncertainty and complexity, is made easier if projects are shown to benefit the site?s strategic goals. Case study research amongst mining companies, including interviews with social investment decision-makers, has assisted in developing a SI-DAT (Social Investment Decision Analysis Tool), a decision model for evaluating social projects in order to create value for both the company and community. Multi-criteria decision analysis techniques integrating business planning processes with social impact assessment have proved useful in assisting mining companies think beyond seeking access to required lands and peaceful relations, to how they can meet their business goals and contribute to regional development.
