Geochemical exploration guidelines were developed from a study of 460 rock chip samples collected at nine disseminated gold deposits in Nevada. Obtaining high grade Au samples is difficult because gold content is extremely variable, even over 8 m (25 ft) distances. For reconnaissance sampling, pathfinder elements are reliable indicators with threshold values of 100 ppm As, 1 ppm Hg, and 50 ppm Sb. Arsenic is the most reliable of the three elements, being significantly enriched in all deposits. If the pathfinder threshold levels are reached with low Au content, more samples should be collected. Successful disseminated gold exploration requires large numbers of samples.

Improvements in cost efficiency, noise control, environmental design and ergonomics ? the mining and construction industries are facing demands on many fronts. The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.

Mine ventilation survey data includes generally redundant, usually inconsistent, often incomplete, and always noisy measurements. Yet, these data are essential for operational decisions and represent the foundation of any mine ventilation systems model used for future engineering analysis and design. For example, the basic ventilation network geometry can be measured with a reasonable precision, the network flows can be measured, but with significant errors, and the branch resistance factors can not be directly measured at all. The network-based, constrained weighted least squares approach, presented in this paper, advances a method for the sys tem-wide adjustment of ventilation branch measurements and the consistent estimation of global system parameters (e.g. branch flows, head losses, and resistance factors). The constraints guarantee that the adjusted values satisfy the governing physical laws: conservation of flow, conservation of energy, and the appropriate energy dissipation rule (e. g. Atkinson's RQ2). The weights allow for the proper inclusion of data with widely disparate precision, as well as offering a simple method for retiring old data as the mine changes through time. The post-adjustment sensitivity analysis presents two potentially useful forms of analysis: the identification of previously unspecified leakage branches, and the semi- automatic recommendation for future ventilation measurement campaigns. The overall efficiency of the algorithm is exemplified by the fact that a ventilation network with hundreds of branches and thousands of measurements can be routinely adjusted on a microcomputer.

Sixty years of rock bursting in the Coeur d'Alene district has taught painful lessons and led to a number of practical advances in controlling rock-burst hazards. This paper summarizes these lessons, concentrating on practical measures that have been successfully adopted to reduce hazards. These lessons are explained in the context of district mining history and current understanding of rock-burst phenomena. Overall, the paper provides the practicing mine engineer with an appreciation of rock-burst hazards and an overview of practical measures that can be used to control these hazards in the context of Coeur d'Alene district experience.

In July 1968, P.T. Inco Indonesia was granted a Contract of Work to explore and develop the nickel laterite resources on the southeastern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi. Since 1970, exploration has centred on the deposits at Soroako as the site for initial project development. This paper describes the exploration methods used to evaluate these rather unique laterite deposits, the geology of which is described in the first section of this volume.

In September 1992, mining in Mexico was opened again to foreign investment by President Salinas-de Gortari, after thirty years of "Mexicanization" of mining industry which limited foreign participation up to a 49 % (or 34 % in case of national reserves) on a Mexican mining corporation. During said period mining in Mexico was controlled by four or five big mining companies and besides mining production was focused mainly on silver, lead, zinc, copper and fluorspar. Suddenly in middle of a big crisis on Mexican mining industry due to low prices of minerals in the world and also in a period on which it seems that mining industry in the United States and Canada has been condemned to die for environmental reasons, it appears a new Mexican Mining Law to permit foreigners to participate in mining in Mexico' trough Mexican mining corporations that they may control up to 100 %

The use of paste tailings as underground backfill and for surface disposal is rapidly expanding, and with it comes the requirement to understand and predict its long-term environmental stability. This paper presents the results from a kinetic testing study performed on cemented tailings paste mixtures under both subaqueous and subaerial conditions. In addition, the effects of grainsize reduction are investigated. It will be demonstrated that the long-term weathering behavior of tailings paste is controlled by its physical and chemical characteristics, as well as its placement conditions. The testing indicates that subaqueous disposal of paste inhibits acid generation, whereas the exposed samples produced acidic leachate despite the presence of cement added to meet geotechnical requirements.

Small-scale flotation tests have been conducted to examine the effect of froth stability on the column flotation of finely pulverized coal. The results of this study demonstrate that the upgrading of coal in a column flotation cell can be significantly improved when froth stability is properly controlled through the manipulation of appropriate operating variables. Several important correlations have been established from the test data. These relationships should prove useful for the design and ore ration of column flotation cells for fine coal processing.

The deep South African gold mines rely on refrigeration to provide a safe working environment. Chilled water, which is produced in large central refrigeration plants, is distributed throughout mines In insulated pipes. In view of the high cost of the insulation materials and recent regulations which prohibit the use of certain insulation materials, a careful examination of the actual benefits of insulating chilled water pipes was undertaken. The objective of the investigation was to produce general guidelines regarding the use of insulation, but the results of numerous studies have shown that the use of insulation is extremely site specific and thus no general guidelines can be given. To assist ventilation engineers with studies on insulation requirements for their cooling systems a computer program has been developed. This paper describes the personal computer program which contains the same user friendly interface as developed for other COMRO programs. Is fully menu driven and incorporates a comprehensive HELP facility which provides background information and assistance with the selection of input data. The effects on the ventilation air and chilled water temperatures from not insulating chilled water pipes in certain areas are calculated. Air leakage, heat flow from the surrounding rock to the ventilation air and heat flow from the ventilation air to the water flowing in chilled water pipes are taken into account. A simple cooling system is considered in which cold water is distributed over a distance of 1 000 m through pipes to a single air cooler. The influences of changes in the temperature of the chilled water and ventilation air, as well as air leakage on the insulation requirements are determined.

The effects of the operating parameters of media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size and grinding time on the stirred media milling of talc were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw) and energy consumption (Em). Furthermore, after determining the optimum grinding conditions, Box-Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio significantly affects d50 size decrease compared with solid mass fraction and grinding time. The minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

The Cuyuna range, located in east-central Minnesota, consists of a sequence of argillite, siltstone, iron-formation, graywacke, slate, and quartzite of early Proterozoic age. Manganese-bearing materials occur within the iron-rich strata of the Trommald Formation and the Rabbit Lake Formation. Computer-assisted resource estimates, based on exploration drill hole information, indicate that the Cuyuna range contains a minimum of 176 million metric tons (Mt) of marginally economic manganiferous rock with an average grade of 10.50 weight percent manganese. The calculated 18.5 Mt of manganese on the Cuyuna range could supply this country's needs for this important and strategic metal for 16 years. An additional resource of 6.9 Mt of manganese metal is available in the lower grade deposits. The majority of these calculated resources are extractable by current surface mining techniques.

"A walk through the exhibit hall or a glance at the technical programing that was offered at the 2019 SME Annual Conference & Expo and CMA 121st National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO, Feb. 24-27 makes it evident that the mining industry is an innovative one that is on the cutting edge of technology. However, a glance at the nearly 6,700 attendees of the conference and it is also evident that while the industry is moving forward at a rapid pace in some areas, it is lagging behind in terms of diversity, both in gender and ethnicity.At Monday morning’s keynote session, Hannah Ubi, a millennial and a public speaker who joked that she is the proud owner of a sixth-place swimming trophy and a number of participation medals, addressed a full house that consisted of many men with gray hair or balding heads. The issue of an aging workforce that is rapidly being depleted by retirements is not a new one for the mining industry. In fact, it has been a concern for the industry for more than a decade. The central question has long been, “when the current senior-level people begin to retire, how do we replace them, and how do we fill the knowledge gap that is walking off into the sunset?” SME has been on the front lines in searching for solutions to the impending problem and, along with industry partners, has worked hard to develop programs that will address these issues. Among other efforts, the Society has developed a Ph.D. fellowship program to encourage people to remain in academia to teach the next generation and to help train the next generation to take over in the private sector.“The SME Foundation’s Ph.D. and Career Development Grant program is exceeding expectations at this point with two Ph.D. students graduating and taking a position in academia and two professors achieving tenure,” SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy said during the conference.The Society’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) has done its part to help educate future generations about the mining industry with initiatives like EngineerGirl, the Boy Scout Merit Badge and Move Mining, the Shark-Tank-style competition that was held on Monday with five finalists competing for the top prize (ME, April 2019, page 53)."

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt. Conductive metal powders are important building blocks for today's micro-electronic circuitry. Formulated into inks, they provide the interconnects needed to complete a complex integrated circuit and the means to enter the world of miniaturization. Traditionally, the inks have been based upon expensive metals such as silver, palladium, platinum and gold because of their excellent electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion and oxidation. The use of a copper based ink, as an alternative to precious metal inks, recently has received considerable attention. Instability in the prices and limited supply of certain precious metal systems have driven up production costs, making the development of a lower cost copper system more attractive to manufacturers. However, lower production costs are on1 y real ized if performance and reliability can be maintained. While the development has been driven by cost, copper does offer some significant performance advantages over noble metal systems: conductivity as good as silver and 4W better than gold; leach resistance better than silver and equal to gold; stability at high frequencies better than gold or silver; strong film bonding characteristics; and compatibility with most solders. These benefits, however, do not come without cost. The inherently reactive nature of pure copper, while providing unique performance properties, makes it difficult to process. Unl i ke precious metals which can be fired in air, copper would oxidize and so requires special furnaces and atmospheres. Despite these difficulties, the transition from precious metal thick film systems to copper is gaining momentum. Manufacturers of high density, high performance circuitry are exploring the performance advantages of copper over gold and silver and the manufacturers of consumer products are considering the potential cost savings of copper over silver-palladium. Sherritt has developed a fine copper powder for this industry. Through association with the ink manufacturers, it has been found that performance properties of the ink vary with the physical and chemical characteristics of the powder. Production Process The production of very fine copper powders at Sherritt is based upon the disproportionation of cuprous ions as outlined in Equation [1] (1).

We are currently doing work on three ways to improve the performance of our froth flotation systems. One development is the use of a cationic flocculent added to the feed of the froth cells. This does give some improvement in ash of the product particularly in a situation where there is a good bit of clay present. Difficulty is usually experienced with clay carrying over with the water contained in the froth product and also adhering to the coal surfaces. Addition of the flocculent to the flotation feed preferentially flocculates the clay causing it to drop into the tails. The results of some laboratory test work on Pittsburgh 88 Seam coal in Eastern Ohio is shown in Table 1. [ ]

This paper describes and demonstrates the application of systems analysis and mathematical modeling techniques in the planning of actual tunnel projects and research and development to improve tunneling techniques. A recently completed tunnel project located in Utah is used as an example. Although cost estimating computer programs are used in tunnel project planning, the introduction of performance modeling, simulating the time to excavate, has added advantages that are explored here. The performance/cost tunneling model (TM) described herein mathematically simulates on a high-speed digital computer the important activities of a number of tunneling techniques accounting for activity interactions, variable external environments, mechanical failure, and other uncertainties. A cost accounting segment is included to facilitate cost-effectiveness comparisons. It is shown that, when combined with informed judgment and appreciation of limitations, the TM can be a useful tool that may help improve tunneling operations and cost estimation, for example, by achieving more balanced system designs or bounding the performance/cost implications of geologic and other uncertainties. Ultimately, this might lead to more competitive bids and greater profits. The need for systems analysis and modeling in tunneling research and development (R&D) is well recognized and documented.(1-5) In R&D one must seek broadly useful solutions to the basic problems of face fragmentation, materials handling, ground support, and environmental control. These solutions must take account of the interdependence of these elements and, for a variety of ground conditions, the limitations or constraints that any innovation in one element may impose on total system performance and cost. In this regard the structure and logic of the TM has been kept as simple and modular as possible so

Ramifide conveyor transport of the biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is simulated by Petri nets. There are 6 longwalls with accidental output. 12 belts, and 5 transfer bunkers at this mine. It is necessary to coordinate transport links for recon- structed conveyor system. Many tasks were solved by dynamic simulation, such as estimation of transport lateness, influence of transfer bunkers on an unevenness of total coal flow, maximum filling of each bunker, maximum time of main conveyor refusal, co-ordination of unloading for dependent bunkers, choice of main conveyor. The problem of mine-wide conveyor transport animation for dispatcher is formulated in reference to mine "Komsomolets". OBJECT OF SIMULATION The biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is situated on a south part of Kusnetski coal basin (West Siberia). One mines about 20.000 tons of coal out of flat seams by 2.2-4.5 m thickness in a day. There are 6 fully- mechanized longwalls by output 720- 3600 tons in a shift in mine. Coal haulage to surface is carried out by 12 belts having 1.6 - 4.3 km length. For a smoothing over un- evenness of coal flows 5 transfer bunkers to 300 tons were intro- duced. An availability approach for determining the capacity of a major Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system to be used in the Yuabaoshan Surface Coal Mine in China is presented in this paper. Based on previous studies on other BWE systems for delay times due to internal and external causes and a four-level maintenance and repair schedule, a model was developed, taking into account all random failures, to present a fast and simple solution to this highly complex problem. A procedure employing the Markov renewal theory for determination of the distribution of random failure times and failure rate of the whole system, as well as some other factors useful for calculation of the overall system capacity, are discussed.

Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.
