The calculation of open pit operations' capacities has been the subject of many studies using computer simulations. The common problems of simulation are that if one desires a realistic picture of an operation the programming work becomes long and expensive and that the program requires a large computer and long time to run. The method presented in this paper overcomes these problems by using a straightforward calculation procedure. It is based on the queuing theory's simple formula for waiting time in a closed circuit and uses a system of correction factors, which reflect the loading, travel, and dumping times' relative variabilities and which have been found by 1) mathematical analysis and 2) simulations of basic circuits. The method includes the main parameters of the operation: numbers, sizes and operational availabilities of trucks, shovels and dumping point, distribution of the production over shovels, trucks' loading, travel (loaded and empty) and dumping times as well as their variabilities, shift's composition. The procedure models: the average duration of a complete truck cycle during stationary and non-stationary periods during the shift as a function of the number of trucks in the circuit, the composition of the average 100% operated shift, the simultaneous probabilities of operationally available shovels and trucks and the distribution of shovels and trucks according to production and cycle times. The procedure can be programmed for a small computer and requires only short computing time, which makes extensive studies of various parameter combinations practical to carry out. The development of the method is an extension of previous work by Morgan and Peterson {1}, who by simulation established the relation between the match factor (which is the ratio between the sum of one loading time pr truck in the circuit and the complete net cycle time) and the shovel's efficiency, and by Hayes, Splaine and Whitaker {2}, who established this relation from a large number of observations in the Nchanga pit in Zambia. The present method establishes this relation by a straightforward calculation procedure. Theoretical solutions to some situations are found in the litterature on the queuing theory. The papers {3},{4} and {5} give solutions to situations, which fall outside those encountered in the shovel-trucks circuit. These solutions together with simulations of in-termediary situations have been used to establish an interpolation procedure for the correction factors to be applied to the waiting time formula in order to cover the situations encountered in practice.

The Mount Polley and Samarco tailings dam failures have had repercussions across the industry. “There are big challenges with respect to tailings, and social and environmental pressures to find better ways to treat them,” said Steve Hearn of Huntsman Corp., a view echoed by Bob Kilborn of Kilborn Group LLC. Metso Minerals director Keith Butler said, “Water conservation is a key issue today. Many mining activities are now located in remote areas, so it has social and economic impacts on mining operations.” For Brian Olson of Samuel Engineering, wastewater and reclaimed-water treatment is interesting.Fittingly, the first talk of the meeting was on dry stack tailings by Michael Blois of Takraf USA, who went over both the advantages and disadvantages. “The average now is over one tailings dam failure a year,” Blois said, “and that is one too many.” But the technology may not be the right fit for all projects. In his talk on the KSM project, Jay Layman, president and COO of Seabridge Gold, showed how it isn’t practical for KSM and how Seabridge reached the decision on a cyclone sand tailings managementfacility as the preferred management strategy.The luncheon keynote also dealt with a tailings pond spill, but of a different kind. Bob Schafer, chief executive of Eagle Mines Management, spoke on the federal missteps that led to the spill into the Animas River from the Gold King Mine, a mine that had been a dry mine throughout its life and up to the 1990s."

Mining in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District has been going on for over 100 years with a long- term continuation very likely. Mining is presently carried out at depths below the -5000' horizon. As mining continues at ever increasing depths, higher in-situ rock stresses and subsequent rock deformation is encountered making mining costly and hazardous. To provide access for men and materials in such areas, a wooden raise preparation structure is typically built. Although these structures provide adequate support and access, they have proved to be very costly to construct and maintain.

High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

Hydrologic investigations at Gold Quarry began in 1989 and continued through 1991. Hydro-stratigraphic units include Tertiary sedimentary rocks, Paleozoic siltstones and carbonates. These units display complex and variable aquifer parameters as a function of faulting and hydrothermal alteration, creating compartmentalized hydrologic domains. Testing has included step-tests, spinner production logs and constant discharge tests. Two Three-Dimensional Finite Element Models have been developed, one for optimizing the pit dewatering system and the second for predicting regional impacts of dewatering. Aquifer testing and long term pumping have been used to calibrate both Finite Element Models.

Several underground coal mining disasters, such as Upper Big Branch in 2010, have revealed technological and organizational shortcomings related to self-escape. Efforts to address these gaps have primarily been top-down, that is, identified and implemented by upper management or external governing bodies. In contrast, this study employs a novel miner-centered approach to identify perceived technological boundaries to self-escape. Using a semi-structured, scenario-based survey, we elicit direct feedback from miners about current, emerging, and hypothetical technologies aimed at improving self-escape during mine emergencies. The results show a general high usefulness rating across all 21 technologies in the survey. Miners who work underground (both outby and working face miners) appear to give higher usefulness ratings overall than miners on the surface and other locations. This work will be directly applied to a series of proof of concept and prototype studies on self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), refuge alternatives (RA), and communication devises aimed at improving self-escape technologies through miner-centered research and design.

AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. After a number of years of engineering and operating assignments and through many types of evaluations, the need for a simple analytical method of evaluating mine haulage alternatives became obvious. Haulage, like 50 many other facets of mining, is generally a sequence of interconnected events that change, often drastically from mine to mine. Often the operator or the mine engineer has neither the time, manpower, facilities, or information needed to prepare a detailed evaluation. For many studies or for routine variance analysis, that detail may not be necessary. The intent of this article is to present an approach for analyzing mobile mine haulage that is simple and straight-forward. These methods are not designed to replace more formal and detailed procedures that have been developed previously and are available in our technical libraries. They are offered as a tool to be applied to preliminary designs, feasibility studies, and variance analyses where more complete detail is not warranted. These methods will eliminate combinations that are not economical or appropriate before more intensive and complete evaluations are undertaken. These methods may also be used to evaluate ongoing operations and to plan changes in those operations. This presentation describes a series of steps that have evolved for the handling of haulage evaluations. It concentrates on the factors having major impact on the results. Because the approach is a sequence of distinct steps, a case study was chosen as the best method of presentation. This case is a composite of several actual situations that have been encountered within the last few years.

There is no known, practical substitute for lead in the automobiles, communications systems, medical equipment and computers that Americans use every day. However, there are many who say lead should be stopped at its source -- banned. As America's largest lead producer, The Doe Run Company has ralized that it must do more than mine and reclaim lead efficiently and safely. It must also earn the public's consent to operate if it is to continue to be a viable business. LEAD - THE BRILLIANT PERFORMER: REFURBISHING AN IMAGE It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. However, I remember there was no course at the University of Missouri's School of Mines and Metallurgy that had anything to do with the public relations aspects of mining or, put another way, the politicization of mining. I haven’t perused the course catalog for Penn State’s College of Earth and Minerals Sciences. But I strongly suspect I wouldn’t find such a course there today, either. A statement by the chairman of one of the country’s largest chemical companies leads to the point I want to make. He described his business this way. He said, “We’re a public affairs company that just happens to produce and market chemicals.” Like chemicals, minerals and mining are politicized today. To the extent that we don’t understand that reality, we don’t understand that reality – and act on it – we’re less likely to survive in this business. Some of you may well be saying to yourselves, “This guy Zelms is an alarmist.” That’s fair enough. Because it is absolutely true that there’s n o known, practical substitute for lead today. And it’s also absolutely true that, knowingly or not, Americans use lead everyday. It’s in our automobile batteries. It’s an integral part of communications systems. High tech (and low tech) medical equipment contains lead. And lead is an essential component of computer and TV screens. But even with all these uses, lead has a negative image today. An image so negative that its very existence is threatened. If you doubt that, consider these two statements made in 1989. Statement one. “It is probably reasonable to argue that exposure is the single most important and critical environmental health problem in the U.S., and possibly also the world…” Statement number two. “Many of the uses of lead should be terminated. We need to go back to the ultimate source: that is, taking lead out of the ground and putting it into the product stream and we need to turn it off at the ultimate source. Not the approximate lead in gasoline, or lead in air, or lead in food. Go right back to the source and start cranking it down." (End quote.) Those are what I call strong statements. And they weren’t made by some celebrity spokesperson for the environment like Meryl Streep. Both these statements were made by Dr. Ellen Silbergeld, whose long list of professional and academic credentials includes: o Adjunct professor and research scientist at the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins: o Chief toxic scientist and director of the Toxic Chemicals Program of the Environmental Defense fund; o and President of the Society for Occupational and Environmental Health. If Dr. Silbergeld were the only person making these kinds of statements, it would be one thing. But she’s not a voice in the wilderness, by any means. Also for those of you who say, well since there’s no known substitute for lead, how on earth could it be banned. Vibratory hand-tools can produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This disease, often called Vibration White Finger, can cause varying levels of hand-arm discomfort and, in severe cases, impairment. In addition to the human suffering, there are also significant economic repercussions for industry. These include reduced operator efficiency, lost time through increased absenteeism and increasing compensation awards. In the mining industry, jackleg rock drills are a particularly troublesome source of hand vibration exposure. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. This paper details the results of a study undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered ("cushioned") handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicate that, for a particular cushioned design, the overall acceleration level experienced at the hand-handle interface can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It is also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz, with performance improving with increasing frequency. Qualitative evaluation of the cushioned handles by the drill operator indicates a significant increase in comfort over the standard steel handle.

The efficiency of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the desulfurization of a high-sulfur content New Mexico coal was demonstrated. The optimum condition of process variables were found to be pH = 2.3, particle size = 38 µm, pulp density 14.1% (W/V) and temperature 33.9°C. Larger scale experiments carried out with these optimum conditions resulted in coal desulfurizations above 97%, while in sterile controls this was only about 10%.- The rate of desulfurization was described with an exponential expression with respect to the effects of coal particle size. The effect of pulp density on coal desulfurization was quantified by a Monod type equation. The apparent activation and deactivation energies, the frequency factor and temperature coefficient were derived from the effects of temperature to be ?aE - 11720 cal mol-1 and A = 30.44 mol dm-3s-lin the range of 20 - 35°C; ?Ed = 43930 cal mol-1 and A = 9.82 x 10-39 mol dm-3s-1 in the range of 35 - 45°C; and Q10 = 1.94 in the range of 20 - 30°C. The thermodynamic values [(?G+, ?H+ and ?S+)] of the activated complex were calculated. The generalized second order regression equation relating the degree of biodesulfurization of coal to the leach parameters was shown to adequately predict coal desulfurization within the range of process variables studied.

on' January 6, ,1992, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule Making (ANPRM) for diesel particulate (DP). The ANPRM identified five areas where the Agency was seeking additional information to assist in the rule making process. These areas were exposure 'limits, risk assessment, consideration of other information, sampling and monitoring methods, and feasibility. The period for submitting information relative to the ANPRM closed July 10, 1992. Prior to issuance of the ANPRM, the agency was involved in conducting studies to evaluate sampling and control technologies and to gather information with respect to occupational exposures to diesel particulate in underground mining operations employing diesel-powered equipment. Since issuance of the notice, additional studies have been conducted to provide supplementary information in these specific areas. Results of these additional studies indicate that average DP levels in coal mines not using aftertreatment range from 0.9 to 2.1 mg/m3. Aftertreatment devices can reduce these levels by approximately 50 to 90 percent. Studies conducted in metal and nonmetal mines showed average DP levels ranging from 0.3 to 1.6 mg/m3.

The pandemic emergency is forcing transit agencies to define strategies allowing social distancing, which are more challenging in underground interchange stations in crowded downtown cores. Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Yonge Station Capacity Improvement Project in Toronto was approved to meet increasing demand and represents an opportunity to fight COVID-19. This paper discusses cost-effective solutions in expanding the cut-and-cover station box over the existing Toronto Subway Line 2 and connecting it through ventilation openings in the cast-iron tunnel liner. Potential uplift risks and structural damage due to minimal vertical clearance were analyzed via three-dimensional finite element analyses with advanced constitutive laws to simulate the multi-stage construction process. Based on the simulation results, a series of countermeasures, including excavation support systems, king posts, ground-consolidations, and liner reinforcements were integrated into comprehensive design options to ensure the serviceability and structural integrity of the subway tunnels.

Over a considerable period of time great interest has been shown in selective dry concentration of fine ferromagnetic particles, although it is only recently that new permanent magnetic materials have been made available to permit building of such permanent magnetic separators. It is well known that the conventional drum separator does' not efficiently separate fine materials. The centrifugal force on any drum acts in accordance with the particle size and gravity, which may beat varying magnitude-.opposite to the magnetic force, especially when the material is not closely sized. The Magnetic-Mechanical Separator (MMS) is designed for the concentration of fine, unsized magnetic materials where the percentage composition of magnetics to nonmagnetics, or the nature and texture of the materials, is such that its unique agitation and shake-out action with no centrifugal force provides greater efficiency than is obtainable by conventional magnetic separation equipment. This machine consists of a complete double belt conveyor unit with a premagnetizing Axial Pole Agitating Pulley at the feeding end of the lower conveyor belt and a special agitating concentrator magnet above the lower belt of the upper conveyor.

Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation may possibly be thought of as a specialized subject of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of mineral producers' staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture. Comments in this paper deal with rail transportation.

Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation developed a quarry operation in 1971 and 1972 for the production of high calcium limestone and construction aggregates, or roadstone. The quarry operation is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania in the northern part of Lancaster County. The geology of the high calcium limestone deposit had a powerful influence on all aspects of planning this operation. My purpose is to trace the influence of geology throughout the planning and thereby point out the discipline that geology imposed on the planning, and indeed, continues to impose on the operation. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation is one of four wholly- owned subsidiary companies of Kurtz Materials Corporation. Kurtz Materials Corporation, through its operating subsidiaries, is a supplier of basic materials to the construction industry including crushed stone, ready mixed concrete, concrete masonry units and a wide range of precast and prestressed concrete products.

Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Figure 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Figure 2

In subterranean mining operations, access to communication networks deep underground is critical for transporting data, voice and video, and other supporting applications that are essential for efficient and safe operations. Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

Heavy earth-moving machineries used in openpit mines intensively expose drill operators to whole-body vibration and shocks, and thus to musculoskeletal disorders. The roles of individual, machine and rock-related factors in their exposure remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional study investigated their roles in 39 drill operators from Indian iron ore mines. It shows that 70 percent of the operators were exposed to high levels of vibration, above the limit values recommended by ISO 2631-1 (1997). Multiple linear regression models showed that the whole-body vibration and shock exposures were strongly associated with operator’s age, drill-machine model and rock hardness, uniaxial compressive strength and density. The role of body mass index was close to significance (p = 0.08). Univariate analyses found the drill’s age, seat-pad thickness and seat backrest height were also strong predictors. These results help in identifying risky operators, materials and occupational situations, and in implementing appropriate prevention and intervention strategies to reduce and monitor the exposures and health risk. In addition, during the planning stage of acquisition of new equipment, anthropometric data of the operators should be considered for the ergonomic design of the seat.

The Narragansett Bay Commission Phase III CSO Program includes construction of the 11,600-foot long, 30-foot ID, deep rock Pawtucket Tunnel in Rhode Island. This paper provides an overview of the Design Build Project features and highlight some of the important design considerations, features, and innovations, including geologic conditions and related TBM design, and deep shaft and tunnel segment designs. The paper provides the most recent updates on some of the project construction activities including TBM tunnel progress and retrieval schemes, tunnel pump station and deep vertical shaft liner installations, SEM construction, and microtunneling for the longest adit using Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar pipes.
