Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines cooperated in a full-scale slope stability research project at the Kimbley Pit near Ely, Nevada. The west wall of the Kimbley Pit was mined from an over-all slope angle of 45° to an over-all slope angle of 57° and the pit was deepened nearly 50 feet. Mining was begun February 10, 1966, and completed October 30, 1966. Approximately 2.55 million tons of ore and waste were mined. The project was designed and carried out to learn more about the behavior of a pit wall as its slope angle is steepened and to obtain a possible insight into engineering parameters for use in design of future slopes. Data from this project are presented as obtained from (1) instruments installed in two adits for deformation and displacement measurements, (2) a subsidence network installed on the surface above the steepened wall, (3) pre- and post-mining observations of stress in rock, (4) sonic-velocity measurements, and (5) seismic and microseismic investigations. Changes occurred in measured quantities as the slope was steepened but stopped when mining was completed. Agreement was noted between the measured changes and predicted changes obtained from calculations using the finite element technique. Subsidence surveys and microseismic studies show the steepened pit wall to be stable.

Procedures for the determination of the operating point that results when a fan is connected to a mine and placed in operation have been a source of confusion for decades. A variety of techniques has been proposed, often to the detriment of the practicing ventilation engineer trying to apply the techniques to the multitudinous mine/fan matching problems encountered in the engineering of mine ventilation systems. This paper proposes some different assumptions and definitions that simplify the solution of problems in determining the operating point. As a result, a set of procedures is provided for determining the operating point of a mine/fan system when the outlet areas of the mine and fan are known. To establish a major simplification in the development of procedures for the determination of the operating point for a mine/fan combination, the authors suggest that the mine pressures be redefined and then used in such a manner that the conservation of energy is ensured. This provides the basis for the recommendation that the fan operating point be determined using the fan total pressure and the system total pressure characteristics. This procedure can be applied to fans in the blower, booster, and exhaust positions equally well and to both single-fan and multiple-fan networks. Another advantage is that the method is applicable to fans with or without an evase.

Five-element style deposits are unusual hydrothermal systems that are typically characterized by a nickel-cobalt-arsenic- silver-bismuth metal assemblage. This mineralization is often represented by abundant native silver, arsenic, or bismuth, and followed by nickel, cobalt, and iron arsenides (skutterudite, safflorite, nickeline, rammelsbergite, and lollingite). The Black Hawk district in Grant County, New Mexico is one of the few examples of this mineralization style in the United States. Despite the differences in formation temperature, depth of emplacement, and host rocks between five-element style deposits worldwide, there are commonalities in mineralogy, ore texture, and composition. A detailed exploration of the native metal and arsenide phases will be performed to compare ore forming fluids between systems and the effects on styles of mineralization and paragenesis, as well as to aid in broader classification of the deposit style. Mineralogy and mineral relationships of the Black Hawk District and other five-element deposits worldwide will be characterized by reflected light petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis. Mineralogical phase diagrams will be generated to better understand the driving processes and evolution of the systems through native metal and arsenide precipitation.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. The Archean (2.65 b.y.) aged Canning Stock at Copper Mountain, Wyoming contains an average of 20 ppm U. The North Canning and Fuller deposits occur within the enriched interior of the stock. Post-Laramide development of super gene enrichment blankets occurred in wide (25- 100 m) crushed zones. Hematite and chlorite accompany pyrite and sooty pitchblende in the mineralized zones. Reduction mechanisms proposed for deposition of pitchblende are: 1) sulfides, 2) hydrocarbons, 3) bacteria, 4) the water table, or 5) some combination of these. Abundant tar- type organics appear to have preserved the enrichment blankets from degradation. Trace element and radiometric data define target zones, but exploration models focus on favorable structure.

In the froth flotation process the detrimental effect of slimes on the froth flotability of valuable minerals has long been known.1 Work by Aplan2 on the froth flotation of coal has shown that the presence of clay slimes causes loss in flotation selectivity, and recovery of combustibles. Obviously then the presence of clay slimes to any great extent in the froth cell feed in a coal preparation plant is undesirable. This problem is exacerbated in plants treating raw 600 um (28#) by zero material due to the variation in flotation with size. The net effect of this phenomenon in a bank of cells treating raw minus 600 µm (28#) material s that by the time adequate flotation of the coarsest size fractions has occurred the finer sizes are already producing undesirable high ash material, which often leads to unacceptable overall quality. Reduction in aeration rate and/or chemical addition to combat this, further decreases the flotation rate of the coarsest fraction leading to heavy losses of coarse low ash coal to the tailings. The above mentioned characteristics formed a key aspect of the fine coal circuitry design at Elk Run Coal Company in Sylvester, WV. The plant was designed to produce compliance steam coal (less than 1.20 lbs. S02/million b.t.u.) Desliming ahead of the froth flotation was included, as the slimes in the plant feed were clay rich, had very high ash levels, and low potential recovery. Lab testwork had also shown that poor selectivity would be expected if raw minus 600 um (28#) material was froth floated.

Since the 1940s, decanter centrifuges have become more important for increasingly complex solid-liquid or solid-liquid-liquid separation processes. Sometimes processed industrial or metalliferous minerals are abrasive or are treated with corrosive chemical agents. Traditional mining applications include the processing of coal, gravel and other products, where low-speed decanters, as well as screen bowl decanters and filters, dominate. These have been increasingly replaced by high-speed decanters during the last decade. Decanter centrifuges also started to play a key role in applications such as drilling muds, processing carbonates and separating SX crud in copper platinum ore concentrations of nickel and gold. Communication between machine producers and mineral processing engineers is vital for the right choice of materials and the design of the right decanter centrifuge for the individual process.

"1 INTRODUCTION With a land area of 718 square kilometres housing a population of slightly over 5.4 million, as of 2014 (Department of Statistics Singapore 2015), Singapore is a highly urbanised city. Transport infrastructure is critical to keep the country and economy highly connected and functional as the population in Singapore continues to grow. The importance of a robust transport infrastructure is recognised by the Ministry of Transport in Singapore, which is working towards bringing 8 in 10 households within a 10-minute walk of a train station by 2030 (Ministry of Transport 2015). This gives rise to the rapid expansion of the rail network in highly urbanised Singapore, resulting in more tunnelling work having to be carried out in closer proximity to existing buildings. Such tunnelling work is expectedly more challenging and complex, and if not managed effectively, will impose higher risk to the adjacent buildings. Hence, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has implemented specific control measures to mitigate such tunnelling risks and to ensure safety of the public. 2 CHALLENGES FACED BY TUNNELLING WORK IN SINGAPORE 2.1 General Challenges of Tunnelling in Singapore With the increasing densification of the rail network in a highly urbanised setting, rail projects in Singapore are faced with several key challenges. One such construction challenge is constrained construction sites brought about by network intensification. Alongside the growth of the rail network, shown in Figure 1, other infrastructure networks in Singapore are also continuously growing. Underground interchange stations between networks become increasingly common, forcing each underground interchange station to be constructed deeper and in closer proximity to existing buildings (Figure 2). Singapore is not alone in facing this issue. The same can be observed in cities like London, in which its myriad network of subway lines pushes new lines and interchange stations to be constructed deeper."

The mining and minerals extraction industries have often been demonized by the public as industries that put profits and production before people. It is true that the inherent danger of the work has led to more fatal accidents than anyone associated with the industry would care to remember. But, in stark contrast to what has often been said, the truth of the matter is safety is now the top priority of every miner, from the face of the longwall to the executive boardroom. Without safety, nothing else matters. This message was told and retold by representatives from some of the world?s top mining and petroleum companies from Oct. 11-13 during the inaugural Safety and Reliability in the Mining and Resources Industries Conference in Calgary, Canada. The meeting was hosted jointly by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). It was the first of a series of conferences to focus on these important topics. Next year, the conference will be held in Minneapolis, MN from Nov. 13-15.

The general term "coal mine burp" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods, and are related to both geological factors and mining tech¬niques. Although no single set of circumstances is solely responsible for causing coal bumps, it is generally agreed that at least one of five conditions is necessary in order for then to occur: 1,2,3,4 (1) the depth of cover exceeds 500-ft., (2) the overlying strata are relatively strong and stiff, (3) the coal is structurally strong, (4) the floor does not heave readily, and (5) the mining method produces high stresses over a large area of the seam. Except for the last, these conditions relate to geological factors that are impractical to control. Consequently, methods of controlling or minimizing the occurrence of coal bumps usually are concerned with mining techniques. Coal bumps have been successfully controlled by both longwall and 'yielding pillar' mining systems 4. The longwall system is particularly effective in controlling bumps, but does not eliminate them completely, especially in strong coal seams being worked at comparatively great depths, say in excess of 2000-ft.5. Under such conditions, auger drilling or water infusion often prove helpful 5,6. These techniques are used to destress or otherwise alter the mechanical properties of the coal in an attempt to shift the peak "abutment pressure" away from the immediate vicinity of the face. Under 'normal' conditions, however, it can be expected that the coal near the face will be crushed under the prevailing high stress conditions and that the peak abutment pressure will automatically be shifted into the solid coal. In this context, coal mine bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with successive yielding of portions of the coal seam with progressive mining. Longwall and yielding pillar mining systems are effective in controlling coal bumps because they ordinarily do not allow the zone of peak abutment pressure to become 'surrounded' by destressed coal.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is in the early stages of design for an estimated 14 m (46 ft) diameter tunnel in northeast New Jersey. This tunnel will carry flood waters from the upper end of the Pompton River in Wayne County, to an outlet in Newark Bay, a distance of 33 km (20.5 miles). The tunnel will be constructed by a tunnel boring machine (TBM), the size of which is unprecedented at the present time. The alignment is through Triassic and Jurassic sandstones, siltstones, and shales that include three beds of basalt that range in thickness from 76 to 310 m (250 to 1020 ft).

The current paper looks at evaluating the merits of large geared mills versus gearless driven mills by evaluating the following factors: The capability of currently available systems in terms of power and mill diameter Efficiency in terms of overall electrical power consumed vs mechanical output power Capital cost Running costs Cooling requirements in terms of air versus water cooling Installation and delivery time World?s largest geared drive ? 2x8500kW ? Wushan, China (operating) Among the many reasons that geared drives on large SAG mills are not favoured, is due to not having an efficient variable speed drive option (60 to 80% critical speed), which is required for process reasons. As technological advances have occurred quite rapidly in recent years, this paper uses the latest data in applying these comparisons and attempts to dispel some of the myths regarding Slip Energy Recovery (SER) and variable frequency drive technology on twin pinion drive systems. Early attempts to provide load sharing on twin pinion drives used primitive electronics which have since been developed to eliminate the problems encountered in earlier attempts. In particular, torque pulsations between the twin motors have been overcome using a higher number of devices (pulses) and better electronics. With successful operation of 2 x 6.5MW (Phu Kham, Laos) and three 2 x 7MW units under manufacture (Pascu Lama) and a further 40 projects worldwide, energy efficient Hyper Synchronous SER drives are now mature and ready for use on 2 X 10MW dual drive mills. Speed variation required is in the range of +/- 15% of synchronous motor speeds. VVVF drive packages from ABB and Siemens are also available for 2 x 10MW in low and high speed options. Dual hydraulic inching drives provide a much safer and convenient operation with the added advantage of locked charge detection.

Abstract. World reserves of bauxite are abundant. Domestic reserves are limited and as a consequence the United States must rely on foreign suppliers for over 90 percent of its bauxite. Nationalization of many bauxite mining operations, levying of higher taxes, increased production and transportation costs, and attempts to create a uniform market price combined to place the United States in a vulnerable position. Alumina from kaolin, alunite, anorthosite, and oil shale have-been-or are being evaluated. World bauxite reserves are increasing and attempts to establish a uniform price have failed; therefore, it may be many years before domestic non-bauxite sources of alumina can compete with imported foreign bauxite.

Blast furnaces of high specific throughput capacities producing 10,000 tpd of pig iron or even more, require burden materials which, because of their chemical, physical and metallurgical properties, guarantee such high performances. Meanwhile, it should be generally accepted that for evaluating the quality of iron ore pellets, it is not sufficient to know the chemical analysis and the physical properties, i.e. grain size distribution, cold compression strength and abrasion of the fired pellets. It is indispensable to determine the metallurgical properties indicated by swelling, reduction-softening under load and reducibility, as well as grain disintegration in the low-temperature range in the beginning of reduction. By introducing new test methods, and in the face of the need to meet more strict requirements, pellet producers are being confronted with steadily increasing tasks and problems which require a deepening of our knowledge of the ways and means of making high-quality iron ore pellets.

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and electronic tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. This paper assumes that the tracking system uses the communication system to perform its operation. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 24 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be “functional, reliable and calculated to be serviceable” and the communications systems “redundancy.” These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using tools that are available to and commonly used by the reliability, maintainability and availability community.

INTRODUCTION A variety of instruments are available for measuring or monitoring the performance of underground mine-ventilation systems. In general terms, the instruments may be classified as those that measure air velocity and those that measure gaseous concentrations. All costs herein are in terms of 1978 US dollars. The mention of a specific manufacturer or device is not intended to be an endorsement by the US Bureau of Mines. AIR-VELOCITY INSTRUMENTS The basic instruments used for measuring the air velocity in mines are the vane anemometer and the smoke tube. Vane Anemometer Of the air-velocity instruments, the 102-mm (4.0¬in.) vane anemometer is the most common and is available as either a low- or high-speed type. The low-speed anemometer generally is the most suitable for measuring the velocities in ordinary airways. For a rough check of the velocity in an airway, it usually is satisfactory to hold the anemometer by hand, positioning it in the center of the airway for 30 sec. However, the resultant error may be as high as 25% , and such a hand-held approach is unsuitable when accurate or reliable measurements are required. To obtain more accurate measurements, the proper procedure is as follows: 1) Since holding the anemometer by hand generally causes the instrument to read about 15% high, it is mounted on a 0.6-m (2-ft) extension rod. 2) The airway is divided into equal right and left halves. A 1-min traverse is used in each half, moving the anemometer smoothly up and down in a zigzag pattern so that the entire half is covered within the allotted minute. 3) The manufacturer's correction table is applied to the readings to adjust the velocity calculation as necessary. Whenever possible, anemometer readings should be obtained in a long straight section of airway that has a constant cross-sectional area. Bends and obstructions should be avoided, since they cause turbulence and other discontinuities in the airflow and can degrade the accuracy of the velocity measurements. Although a series of velocity measurements at one location usually corresponds to within a few percent, this is not an indication that the airflows calculated from those readings are completely accurate. One reason is that the correction table provided with the instrument generally is not for that specific instrument; instead, it represents the average correction for all such instru¬ments made by the particular manufacturer. Most cor¬rection tables specify a correction factor of from 0 to 15%, depending upon the velocity. However, even after correction, the instrument error still may range from 3 to 5%. At low velocities such as those below 0.76 m/s (150 fpm), the instrument error can be two or three times greater than this, ranging from 6 to 15%. The new ball-bearing anemometers generally perform somewhat better at low velocities than did the older conventional anemometers. Another source of error is introduced when measur¬ing the cross-sectional area of the airway or entry. Under the best of circumstances, measurement errors, instrument errors, and a host of other minor errors all combine to cause a total error of at least 10% in the velocity calculation. The vane anemometer also can be used with reason¬able accuracy to measure airflows in mine-ventilation ducts. In this application, the anemometer is mounted on a rod and is held at the center of the duct end. For a duct that is discharging air, the average velocity in the duct is 85% of the centerline reading (Northover, 1957). For a duct that is taking in air, the average velocity is 70% of the centerline reading (Haney and Hlavsa, 1976). To measure the airflow discharged from a regulator or from a small hole in a stopping or bulk¬head, a correction factor for the area is necessary. A good approach in this situation is to traverse the area of the regulator or hole, holding the anemometer with an extension rod. This provides an average velocity that is multiplied by 85% of the measured area of the regulator or hole. In all cases, the manufacturer's instrument cor¬rection table must be used and applied properly. For accurate results, the anemometer should be returned to the manufacturer for periodic cleaning and checking. If it is in daily use, the anemometer should be returned about once per year, and proportionally less frequently if the usage is less frequent than on a daily basis. Smoke Tube The smoke tube may not appeal to individuals who believe that good measurement results can be obtained only with expensive, complicated, and fragile instru¬mentation. Nevertheless, smoke works about as well as anything for the routine measurement of low air velocities in mines. The following procedure yields reasonably good results: 1) Two marks are scratched 7.6 m (25 ft) apart on the floor of the airway. 2) The smoke tube is used to release a cloud of smoke in the center of the airway, about 0.9 m (3 ft) upstream of the first mark on the floor. 3) A timed interval begins when the leading edge of the smoke cloud passes over the first mark, and the interval stops when the leading edge of the cloud passes over the second mark. 4) A factor of 20% is subtracted from the cal¬culated velocity to determine the true average velocity, providing a correction for the centerline and for the spreading effect at the front of the cloud. A quantitative evaluation of damage caused by ground motions associated with strong roof caving is presented. The strong roofs are modeled as either cantilevering or bridging beams over continuous elastic foundations that are subject to an exponentially distributed vertical stress. Major factors influencing roof caveability and strain-energy buildup are identified and investigated. A methodology for the evaluation of strain-energy accumulation caused by, an overhanging roof is presented. The potential for mine tremors is determined in terms of the local Richter magnitude (ML), which depends on the seismic energy transformed from the stored strain energy that is released when the roof fails. A particle-velocity model is applied to estimate the damage area associated with roof collapse. A case study from a Utah coal mine shows that estimations of bump severity and the damage area agree well with field observations.

The Cove gold-silver deposit is located 50 km southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada and 1.5 km northeast of the McCoy Mine. Total proven and probable reserves are 48.7 Mt (53.7 Mst) with an average grade of 1.85 g/t (0.054 oz/st) Au and 87.1 g/t (2.54 oz/st) Ag. Mineralization is hosted by Triassic carbonate and siliciclastic rocks in two separate orebodies. Oxide ore consists of disseminated gold and silver in clay-altered, manganese-flooded limestone. Sulfide ore is dominated by pyrite-sphalerite-galena veins in siliciclastic rocks and sandy dolomite. Gold and silver occur in the native state, associated with the base metal sulfides. Mineralization is interpreted to be the distal expression of a porphyry system. The McCoy gold (copper) deposit is interpreted to be the proximal expression of the same system.

Talc is an important industrial commodity due to its wide-ranging intrinsic properties; however, the presence of iron oxide hinders its industrial utilization. Herein, we report the purification of Pakistani talc through acid leaching assisted by chlorination techniques. Among various acids (i.e., HF, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, Aqua Regia, H3BO3, and CH3COOH), HF was the most effectual, removing up to 67% of iron oxide at optimized conditions of temperature, 90–95 °C; time, 120 min; HF concentration of 5%; and at a pH of 1. In the second step, chlorination of the talc sample was performed separately by both wet chlorination and dry chlorination. Wet chlorination was carried out using KMnO4 and HCl in slurry phase which shown about 52% removal of iron oxide, whereas dry chlorination with CaCl2 at high temperature attained about 48% removal of iron oxide from talc sample. Further, the wet chlorination of HF leached samples was also performed under optimized conditions which showed up to 87% iron oxide removal. The original and treated talc samples were characterized by EDX and XRD analysis to monitor the changes in the elemental and mineralogical composition of the talc. It can be concluded that HF leaching followed by wet chlorination is an effective method for the upgradation of low-grade Pakistani talc ores.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface.
