"Two important aspects of excavation performance of TBM are advance rate and cutter replacement/ring consumption, which is closed to the cost and construction duration of the project. To achieve this, a database of TBM parameters and the geological-geotechnical conditions during the excavation of Yinhanjiwei was compiled and analyzed. Relationships between different geological and TBM operational parameters were investigated. Results of analyzes show that there are qualitative correlation between Field Penetration Index (FPI) and rock geological parameters. And strong relationships between FPI and operational parameters are suggested. In this study, the cutter replacement and ring consumption were analyzed using statistical method for preliminary estimation in similar conditions. 1. ITRODUCTION Hard rock TBM is widely used in tunneling project nowadays because of its advantages to conventional drilling and blasting, especially in long tunnels. The biggest advantage is its high advance rate. However, rock conditions of tunnels are complicated. So TBM performance becomes a primary topic in tunneling engineering, which includes of rate of penetration, utilization, daily advancement, cutter consumption and so on. Many prediction models have been developed to estimate the TBM performance in the project planning phase. The most widely accepted and used models around the world are semi theoretical CSM model (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and the empirical NTNU model (Blindheim, 1979, Bruland, 1998).With increasing uses of TBMs in different ground conditions, an increasing number of researchers have developed new models in order to predict the performance of TBM more accurately in similar geological conditions.(Gong and Zhao, 2009; Hassanpour et al.,2009, 2010, 2011, 2014; Delisio et al., 2013; Delisio and Zhao, 2014)"

This paper describes the formulation of mine ventilation network optimization as a standard nonlinear programming problem and the solution of the problem using the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. In general, the GRG method is regarded as one of the most effective and efficient methods for solving large-scale nonlinear programming problems. The variables considered in the network optimization include air quantity, regulator pressure loss, and fan pressure for each branch. Each of the variables is constrained by lower and upper bounds. This facilitates proper assignments of ventilation requirements and provides a great flexibility to include various situations encountered in mine ventilation. The objective of the network optimization is to minimize the overall air power consumed by or supplied to the network; whereas the constraints are, in addition to the variable bounds, the two fundamental network laws: Kirchhoffs voltage law and Kirchhoffs current law. A computer program has been developed based on the GRG method for the network optimization. An example of network with 18 branches, 8 regulators and 3 fans is included for illustration.

The Twin Buttes Mine, one of the more recently developed large copper mines in the United States, is in the Pima Mining District about 25 miles south of Tucson (Figure 1). Other copper producing mines in the district are the Esperanza-Sierrita mining operations, five miles to the southwest and the Pima and Mission Mines, seven miles to the north. Copper metal production from the Pima District in 1974 totaled 276,728 tons and the Twin Buttes Mine's share was 46,473 tons or about 17%.' The district's copper production was 31% of Arizona State's production and nearly 17% of the production from the United states in 1974. The Pima District thus ranks as one of the major copper producing areas in this country.

Metal mining at great depths presents a number of serious challenges for mine operators. Among them is the high demand for fresh air required to cool down mine openings, evacuate noxious gases and contaminants and provide sufficient amounts of oxygen for miners. At the same time, modern mechanized mines extensively use diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machines, trucks and other mobile equipment. These vehicles not only emit exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM), but constitute an additional source of heat. As mine regulations get steadily more stringent with regard to air quality, the use of diesel engines has an additional adverse impact on ventilation costs. In this context, the present paper examines possible alternatives for diesel power trains, both those commercially available and those in development. They are reviewed with regard to their principles, required infrastructure, stage of technology development and progress. The questions of their flexibility, practicality and economic viability are also addressed. Finally, their possible benefits and potential for implementation in the conditions of deep metal mines are discussed. The paper concludes with short- to medium-term predictions concerning promising drive alternatives for vehicles destined to operate in deep metal mines.

The importance of "Mineral Pigments" can best be shown by noting that the world production is estimated to be in excess of 47 billion kilograms (52 million st). This quantity if pack- aged in the common 22.6 Kg (50 Lb.) bag and placed end to end would circle the world over 500 times. This world production figure is based on a broad concept that pigments, extenders, and fillers have essentially similar functions. The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine, creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe coexistence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study uses a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to evaluate the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations are within values validated with field measurements.

Allis Mineral Systems' Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company's [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant's rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

The purpose of the Sustainable Aggregates Planning in South East Europe (SNAP-SEE, SEE/D/0167/2.4/X) project is to develop a Toolbox for Aggregates Planning to assist governments and stakeholders in national, regional, primary and secondary, aggregates planning in southeast European countries. The Toolbox comprises documents on stakeholder consultation, data and analysis methodologies, a vision of best practices in aggregates planning and how to build an aggregates plan. The Toolbox will also support ongoing efforts to enhance minerals policy in the European Union (EU) as called for by the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials. Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. The Nordhalde is a waste rock pile resulting from uranium mining near Ronneburg, Germany. The pile contains over 27 million m3 of waste rock. Typical seepage water has a pH of 2.7 and a sulfate concentration of 10,000 mg/L. Geochemical investigations of the Nordhalde from 1993 to 1996 included drillholes, test pits, ABA and metals analyses, column tests, and a detailed review of the construction history of the pile. In 1996, eight drillholes were instrumented for monitoring oxygen and temperature. Monitoring continued for a fill year. Hourly temperature and pressure readings were taken by automated data recorder. Oxygen concentrations were measured three times per week, and periodic gas samples were obtained for complete analysis. The resulting data set is believed to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind. Effects noted elsewhere, such as thermal convection, are evident. However, unlike other data in the literature, the NordhaIde data shows a strong seasonal effect, with convection dominating oxygen transport only in the winter months. Analysis of the data allowed the amount of contaminants associated with ongoing and historical oxidation to be compared, and results were used to assess the potential effectiveness of proposed remediation measures.

Would you believe me if I told you the constant battle between Government regulatory agencies and industry could be won by both sides? No, I'm not crazy, nor have I been soaking up any of that fine Kentucky whitelightning. But I have recently been a participant in a battle where both sides won. Actually, I'm using the term "battle" loosely because, in reality, it wasn't a battle at all - despite the fact that all the ingredients were there for a monumental struggle; i.e.. government, industry, special interest groups and a controversial issue - the development of effluent limitations. I'd like to tell you about it. Historically, on one side of the battle, government has always been ac¬cused of adopting regulations with limited evaluation of existing technologies; and then with seemingly no regard for the economic consequences. On the other side, industry gets punished by government's harsh actions because of their past "do-nothing" attitude toward pollution control. Recently, this battle seems to be losing steam, because both government and industry are beginning to realize that, ultimately, they both will lose. Even more important is the fact that both sides are, or should be, working for industrial expansion compatible with environmental protection.

The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and wash- ability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected was statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size-consist, and yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

A 16.5-kt/day underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in Northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. A gravity block caving method has been selected for mining the ore. Access to the mine will be through a service shaft, development shaft, and a conveyor decline. The shafts are being sunk under contract and the conveyor decline is being driven by Molycorp. The driving of the decline began in February, 1979 with a 10-man mining class. By the first of May, enough men had been trained to begin a continuous operation and by March 1, 1980 the face had reached the 1500 m mark. The heading is being driven with trackless rubber-tired equipment using a three-boom drill jumbo, 2.7 m3 LHD units and 7.3 m3 trucks. Ground support has been by rock bolts and wire mesh, followed by Fibercrete. A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity - 9 Gg of molybdenum per year - to be reached in 1984.

"Since entering the new century, China’s coal industry has witnessed the rapid development, and provided a reliable energy supply for the national economic and social development. But after the “golden decade” of rapid development, the coal industry now is facing overcapacity, low industrial concentration and production efficiency, high pressure of production safety and environmental protection and other prominent issues. Based on defining the connotation of highly-efficient recovery of coal resources, this paper established the relevant 8 indicators to reflect the highly-efficient recovery level of coal resources, summarized the present situation of China's coal resources recovery and the main problems, analyzed the development environment of China's coal industry under the new situation, and finally put forward the strategic measures to promote highly-efficient recovery of coal resources in China.1. Background Coal is the main energy in China. Since entering the new century, China's coal industry has made significant progress, and the level of production safety, resource recovery rate and mining mechanization increased significantly, which provided a reliable energy supply for the rapid development of the national economy. However, due to the changes of China's economic environment, slow growth of energy demand and other factors, some prominent contradictions in the coal industry have significantly restricted the healthy development of the industry. The first problem is serious overcapacity. In the past few years, 16 industries including coal, electric power, chemical and others have invested in coal mines. It is reported (Han 2016) that only during the nine years from 2005 to 2014, the fixed assets of coal industry increased totally more than 3.3 trillion RMB, which brought a large number of production capacity. Affected by the slowdown of economic growth and energy structure adjustment, Chinese coal demand has reached the peak platform and caused the overcapacity of coal supply, so shutting down the backward capacity is the most important task in the future. The second problem is the low efficiency of coal production. There are about 4.3 million coal mine workers in China, and the annual coal production per capita is less than 900 tons, while it was reported (EIA 2016) that the annual production per capita in the United States is more than 10 thousand tons. The third problem is that the green coal resources are not rich. Among the 1.53 trillion tons proven reserves, only about one third are green coal resources in accordance with the principle of ""safety, technology, environment and economy"". The coal resources with high quality and easily mining conditions are not abundant."

Field investigations have revealed that sawdust can be used as an efficient additive to ANFO for carrying out production blasts in limestone mines. Sawdust can be used at a reasonably reduced cost without sacrificing fragmentation, muck profile and wall control. Such additives lower the detonation pressure of ANFO by acting as low-grade fuel that reacts or burns more slowly in the presence of ammonium nitrate than does fuel oil. On detonation, it eventually forms near-ideal oxygen balance that helps in liberating maximum energy to break the surrounding rock. It also forms a low-density stable mixture that helps in reducing loading density (kg/m) of explosive in the blasthole. Experiments performed at the Hirmi Limestone mine, M/s L&T, and at the Lambasta Limestone mine, M/s Jaypee Rewa Cements, showed the novel acceptance of the technique in a highly competitive market where cost reduction has been a major area of thrust.

The Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) is developing cover technology for uranium mill tailings that will inhibit the diffusion of radon to the atmosphere. As part of this cover program, an improved radon flux measurement system has been developed. The radon measurement system is a recirculating, pressure-balanced, flow-through system that uses activated carbon at ambient temperatures to collect the radon. With the system, an area of 0.93 m2 is sampled for periods ranging from 1 to 12 h. The activated carbon is removed from the radon trap and the collected radon is determined by counting the 214Bi daughter product. Development of the system included studies to determine the efficiency of activated carbon, relative calibration measurements and field measurements made during 1980 at the inactive tailings pile in Grand Junction, Colorado. Results of these studies are presented.

As part of a study aimed at understanding the hydrology of in situ leach mining (ISLM), the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation and the University of Arizona, is investigating dynamic transmissivity conditions during ISLM of a copper oxide ore deposit. Spatial and temporal variations in ore zone transmissivity during two years of ISLM operations at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine are evaluated during sixteen intervals of steady-state injection and recovery well operation. Direct inversion of an analytical hydrologic model is used to obtain estimates of transmissivity at 58 well locations during these intervals. Univariate statistical and geostatistical methods are used to describe the temporal and/or spatial relationships that exist between transmissivity and other ISLM parameters, including average well injection pressure, average sulfuric acid concentration in leach solution, and the relative configuration of injection and recovery wells. Average transmissivity during the sixteen steady-state time intervals varies between 6.00 x 10-6 m2/min. (6.46 x 10-5 ft2/min.) and 3.61 x 10-8 m2/ min. (3.89 x 10-7 ft2/min.). A trend toward decreas¬ing transmissivity is evident during two year of ISLM operations. This decreasing trend is found to correlate with a decreasing sulfuric acid concentration in injected leach solution, and suggests increasing geochemical precipitation within the deposit. Geostatistical analyses reveal a dynamic and anisotropic transmissivity structure within the target ore zone, that is dependent upon spatial and temporal changes in injection pressure and well configuration.

Raw materials and mineral products are crushed, ground, or pulverized for a variety of reasons. Some of the most important reasons for size reduction are: to liberate marketable mineral species from a matrix of commercial minerals and gangue, to promote rapid chemical reaction through exposure of large surface area, and to produce a material with desirable size characteristics for handling, utilization, and storage. Comminution processes are currently used on vast tonnages of raw material annually. In the mineral industries where mineral products and other solids are processed, the various size-reduction unit operations represent a major portion of the manufacturing costs. The comminution process is an expensive unit operation from the stand- point of both capital and operating costs. Power consumption is large, and the energy conversion to useful work is very small regardless of the size-reduction system. In energy terms, about 1% of the all electricity generated throughout the world is expended in crushing and grinding operations by the cement industry alone. Comminution is a general term for size reduction that may be applied without regard to the actual breakage mechanism involved. "Top-down wall construction was selected to excavate the tunnel portal headwall areas of the ORB East End Crossing tunnel. Benefits included an expedited construction schedule realized by staging excavation and rock support with development of temporary construction access roads. Rock mass properties, proximity to right-of-way lines, and blasting impacts were considered to design suitable lift heights, intermediate bench locations, and permanent ground support systems to provide supported permanent excavations. Carbonate rock formations contained adverse subsurface geotechnical features including solution cavities, clay seams, weathered joints, pinnacled rock, and boulders, which were addressed by flexibility in design. The resulting over-break conditions and long-term water infiltration issues required economic design solutions. This paper discusses the unique considerations required during design of top-down tunnel portal headwalls excavated in carbonate rock formations including temporary excavation and permanent ground support systems which provided flexibility for unforeseen over-break, minimized construction delays, and provided long-term stability. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East End Crossing is an approximate 8-mile highway connection of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing (ORBEE) project. Currently under construction, this connection will link State Road 265 in Indiana with the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky to form an outer loop bypassing the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. This highway project features a 2,510-foot long, three-span cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River, and a 1,680-foot long tunnel. The project, being managed by the Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2016. The new twin three-lane tunnel under the historic Drumanard Estate requires steep cut excavations for approach and tunnel portal walls on the order of 60 feet deep through overburden soil and carbonate bedrock formations. This paper focuses on the design considerations for the permanent support of the top-down wall construction of the tunnel portal headwalls and approach retaining walls."
