Clinoptilolite zeolite may offer attractive, cost-effective alternatives for remedial cleanup of old minesites, smelters and other sites with heavy metal contamination. Previous research demonstrates the relatively strong affinity of clinoptilolite for numerous metals and clinoptilolite displays a particularly strong affinity for lead (Loizidou and Townsend, 1987), one of the most toxic and problematic heavy metals. Since clinoptilolite can also selectively absorb some radionuclides and organic compounds, it may offer practical solutions to a wide variety of environmental problems.

This paper reviews the past 18 months of geostatistical work in a coal deposit performed jointly by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners. The objective of the study was to better predict the in-seam sulfur values of the deposit for the purpose of future emission control. Based on initially available 112 DDH information, variogram models were developed for Sulfur, Ash and Thickness for the entire deposit. The deposit was then kriged using 333 m x 333 m (1000 ft x 1000 ft) panel size. The estimation variance information obtainable from geostatistics was next utilized to improve the development drilling activities that were underway. The results of this effort are presented in this paper. In addition, this paper describes (1) the reasons for preferring kriging over the conventional isopachs, (2) the results of empirical validation of the kriged estimates using 19 additional DDH information, and (3) up-to-date experience on the use of conditional simulation of the same deposit for the future emission control strategy development.

The theoretical requirements for the flotation d large particles are discussed. A flotation machine is described which has components which meet many of the theoretical requirements for the flotation of large particles. The machine's salient features include multiple fine-bubble attachment, froth level feeding, quiescence, shallow depth, and short flotation time. Test conditions and results are presented for the laboratory flotation of 10 mesh phosphate, 4 mesh potash, and 1/2 inch coal. In addition, test conditions and results of pilot plant flotation of minus 14 plus 35 mesh phosphate and minus 14 plus 150 mesh phosphate are also presented.

Hydraulic tailings fill in the Butte deep level mines was based upon studies made in 1958 by the Anaconda Company Mining Research Department, which published Bulletin No. 35, entitled "Hydraulic Stope Filling". Since then, many things have changed. At the time of the Research Departments study, dry mine tailings were hauled by rail cars from the Anaconda tailings ponds, twenty-five miles distant, to the underground mines' tailings fill plants at the Leonard Anselmo, and Mt. Con Mines. Now, with the installation of the new Weed Concentrator in Butte, tailings is delivered by pipeline to a cyclone at the Kelley Shaft, and stope filling has become more highly automated and streamlined. Presently, mill tailings at approximately thirty percent solids by weight, is pumped from the concentrator, eight thousand feet horizontally and upward, to the Kelley Fill Plant, where they are dewatered and deslimed by three Krebs Model D20B Cyclones, which discharge the material into the cased and grouted mine delivery bore holes at desired densities up to seventy percent solids. The vertical boreholes and four-inch rubber lined Victaulic pipe carry the material downward to horizontal distribution lines, which in turn tap into the stops-filling, three inch, unlined steel Victaulic pipelines. The slurry may travel several thousand feet before it finally discharges into the stope, where it lends support to the mined-out area.

This paper focus on the productivity, cost efficiency and training programmes that have enable RPM to rank as a world class operation in production efficiency and safety achievements. The first step was to commit all senior managers to implementing the NOSA Industrial Safety System based on Management by Objectives. This focused the workforce in a specific, results-driven direction which greatly promoted subsequent performance improvements. The early operations concentrated on increasing throughput via process simplification and removal of bottlenecks. Efforts were simultaneously directed to environment, health and safety as a means to improving the quality of operations. In the last two years, improvements in mining and in-tailings dam management have further improved the cost competitiveness of RPM such as to assure its future in treating the remaining CTBl ore reserves. Promissing progress is being made in developing a viable process to exploit a remaining large resource of B2 mineralisation.

Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 30 m/min (100 fpm). This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities — 152, 213 and 274 m/min (500, 700 and 900 fpm)— and at water pressures of 689, 1,034 and 1,379 kPa (100, 150 and 200 psi). Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Average reduction efficiencies of at least 90 percent were seen at the three sampling locations closest to the shearer for all three manifold systems at nozzle spray pressures greater than 689 kPa (100 psi). Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer, a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation.

A major bauxite belt was discovered and evaluated from 1969 to 1974 by P. T. Alcoa Minerals of Indonesia in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The proven reserves of beneficiated bauxite are 800 million tons averaging 38.6% AA1203 and 3.0% RSiO2. Inferred reserves of washed bauxite are in excess of 2 billion tons. The bauxite occurs as capping of low lying hills which were formed during the post Paleogene peneplaination stage. The overburden varies from 0.6 to 3.8 meters and the nodular bauxite horizon from 2.2 to 5.2 meters. The deposits were formed by the in situ weathering of predominantly acidic and basic intrusive rocks.

In 2001, the Minntac Division of US-Steel retrofitted one of their Grate-Kiln Iron Ore Pelletizng lines with a Ported-Kiln Air Injection System (PKAIS) the first of it’s kind in the world for oxide pellets. The Ported Kiln System injects air under the bed of pellets in the rotary kiln, causing rapid oxidation of the magnetite pellets. This rapid oxidation allows for lower kiln temperatures, reducing fuel demand; less heat load on the annular cooler; and higher pellet quality. Both the process and the equipment are patented developments by Metso Minerals. This paper discusses the process, the key equipment, and the benefits to the pellet plant and the downstream blast furnace operations.

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. The Inland Feeder project is a critical component of Southern California’s water delivery system, relying on a strategic plan of water transfer and storage to enable the delivery of an additional 650 million gallons of water a day. The Arrowhead West and Arrowhead East tunnels form part of this system, comprising the construction of nearly13 km (8 miles) of bored tunnel under the San Bernardino National Forest. This paper describes the design and manufacture of the 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter precast segmental primary lining that will be used in these tunnels to resist rock loads, and up to 275 m (900 ft) of external hydrostatic head.

Concrete pipes and small boxes have been installed by the jacking method. This paper will describe a recent project were large concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. This project is in the city of Boston, MA. By now everyone in the USA knows something about this project. The project official name is The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T). This is the biggest public work project in the USA right now, with an estimated construction cost of 14 billions. The main objective of the CA/T project is to replace an existing artery built in the 1950s to increase capacity and safety. One section of the new artery will cross under several railroad tracks near the South Station. To construct the section of the new artery under these tracks, big concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. The jacking method can be used to install pipes, small concrete boxes, and the CA/T project has demonstrated that big concrete road tunnel boxes can be installed by jacking.

A characteristic common to most tailings dam failures caused by earthquakes or excessive rain storm is that the tailings tend to liquefy and flow for substantial distances as a viscous fluid, with the potential for extensive damage to property and life. Failures of El Cobre, Chile (1965), Mochikoshi, Japan (1978), Aberfan, Wales (19661, Buffalo Creek, West Virginia (1972) are examples of such catastrophic incidents. In these four incidents more than 400 lives were lost, and the loss of property was approximately $200 million. In order to be able to assess the potential for damage in case of such a failure, it is necessary to predict the possible extent of flow slide movement. This paper discusses simple procedures for performing such analyses. Also, in order to illustrate the use of these analysis procedures in tailings dam design, two case histories are analyzed.

INTRODUCTION The prediction of the engineering behavior of a rock mass depends upon the systematic analyses of the results of an exploration program, and upon the recognition of the significant rock properties in the early stages of excavation. The variations in rock properties in different geologic terrains and the state of the geotechnical art preclude complete success in the former case, and we therefore must rely heavily on the experience gained in the latter phase. The geotechnical information obtained from these two phases is only of value to the design engineer when applied to the rock behavior during excavation and subsequent plant operation. Pertinent questions which must be answered include: how does the joint orientation and frequency effect tunnel support and overall cavern stability; how does the depth of surficial soil or weathering effect foundations or slope stability for portal cuts; are there permeable zones within the rock mass that could lead to leakage problems around penstocks and is the material in these zones soluble or likely to pipe in the long term; and does the proposed engineering structure fit the terrain, or will it inevitably lead to problems requiring extensive remedial treatment. "Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

The Henderson molybdenum mine, near Empire, CO, has operated since 1976 using a panel caving process and a rail haulage transportation system. After two decades of service, the rail haulage system required a substantial capital expenditure to improve operations. The timing for this worked well because Henderson was able to combine this capital need into a mine plan that addressed process bottlenecks and current mining practices as a new production level was designed and developed. This process was a logical step, following an equipment upgrade program, and became known as the Henderson 2000 project. One of the key components of Henderson 2000 is a new ore transportation system. Throughout Henderson's life, the bottleneck has been the rail haulage system. Henderson staff evaluated several transportation alternatives and decided on a truck haulage configuration feeding an underground crusher and conveyor system. This configuration will eliminate the haulage bottleneck and will allow the mine to increase capacity. The installation of this system will be completed by the year 2000. The second key component of Henderson 2000 is the development of a new 7175 production level to extract the lower reserves of the ore body. Henderson staff benchmarked other caving operations and compared their mining practices to Henderson's basic mining guidelines. It became apparent that Henderson's practices could become more efficient, particularly in the areas of drawpoint spacing and column heights. These concepts were incorporated into the layouts

The steady growth of spray drying in the U.S. kaolin industry is paced by advances in design and development of large spray dryers which have led to large scale new applications in mining and related industries.

Bigger flotation cells can result in larger froth surface areas and longer froth transport distances, this has been credited to impact froth recovery. Thanks to recent advancements, the newer flotation machines can be designed with different launder and crowder arrangements to enhance froth management. Nevertheless, lower head grades, complex ores and even larger mechanical flotation cells can lead to insufficient froth collection, even if the cell is equipped with the most recent flotation advancements like the center launder design. Aforementioned issue can become critical at the end of the flotation row. Increased crowding has been proven to be a solution to overcome inadequate froth recovery. However, scaling-up crowders for larger flotation cells can rise challenges, particularly in terms of structural limits and design for service. This paper presents the development journey for the Spider Crowder Upgrade, an advancement to improve froth collection in large flotation cells that are already equipped with center launders.

Over the past 30 years, the coal industry has been continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning fine coal to acceptable ash and sulfur contents while maintaining maximum product yield. The flotation process has been part of this effort and its importance is expected to grow as new utilization technology demands finer and purer coal products. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger effort aimed at development of new and improved flotation systems for removing sulfur and ash from as-mined coal as well as for producing super-clean coal for future markets. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of flotation.

Providing adequate airflow to effectively dilute and remove diesel pollutants in large mine working headings is a little researched area. A simulated diesel mucking operation was carried out in the Exxon Colony Pilot Mine in Colorado to establish expected levels of diesel pollutants in dead-ended working headings. This heading was nominally 15.3 m (50-ft) wide by 9.2 m (30-ft) high. Two face ventilation systems were tested using sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas to represent the diesel pollutants. The results of these tests showed that conventional face ventilation systems operating at high flow rates could adequately ventilate diesel equipment in the 447-522 kw (600-700 hp) range, even in a dead heading 91.4 m (300 ft) in length.
