Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. Accurate knowledge of the gas content of coal seams has always been important, according to the work of W. P. Diamond and J. R. Levine, 1981, but is becoming increasingly important for several reasons: Excessive gas emissions in the mine can create explosion hazards. Depletion of shallower coal reserves is forcing underground operations to greater depths where coal gas content is often greater. Natural gas prices and the need for new energy sources make naturally occurring coal gas a potential resource of economic interest. Information on coal gas content will impact mine designs, mine ventilation system specifications, and the effectiveness of methane control procedures used. Accurate resource assessment is needed for projecting and designing potential gas utilization enterprises. The emphasis upon methane hazards in mining operations, and upon potential methane utilization, has led us to improve upon the procedures used to determine coalbed methane levels.

Cathodic protection using impressed current was employed to reduce mill wall wear during ball milling. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four 1-in.-diam mild steel coupons that were installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH levels of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 30% to 60%. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It was also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

The Coal Pillar Rib Rating (CPRR) technique has been developed to assist in rib support design in underground coal mines. One major challenge of the data collection process is the measurement of coal strengths in the field. Schmidt hammer has been verified as a useful tool to determine coal strength. An alternative approach is to obtain the representative strength of coal mass by determining the coal lithotypes in the field based on the coal brightness profile by experienced geologists or mining engineers. In this paper, image processing techniques have been used to quantify the texture of coal images of different lithotypes with the purpose of classifying coal lithotypes. The coal images were collected from the pillar ribs with exposed surfaces in underground coal mines, and the coal lithotypes were identified when taking the images. The method of Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) was used to analyze the textures of coal images of different lithotypes, and the texture parameters, such as contrast, homogeneity, energy, and entropy, were compared. The results show that the images of coal with different lithotypes have different textures, which can be quantified through the image processing. The results from this study demonstrate the potential of classifying coal lithotypes using rib photos and easing the data collection process of CPRR.

The mining industry has recently been. - experiencing a difficult period. Escalating costs, lower grades and deeper level mining, are a few of .the reasons' why interactive graphics or CADD (computer aided design and draughting) systems are increasingly being used. CADD systems which support powerful and flexible mining applications have great potential for making all forms of mining more efficient and effective. There are many application programs which address almost every aspect of mining. Most of these programs originated to satisfy a particular need. Graphics and other features were added until they, reached a point where they were commercially viable as a mining package. Because of their evolution these packages, lack many CADD-type features. Today there are powerful personal computers (PC's) and engineering workstations running the best CADD systems available. These systems, support hundreds of applications in almost every discipline. Mining was until recently not well supported by interactive graphics vendors because of the highly variable nature of mining and the lack of common standards. Users of CADD systems have experienced the benefits of CADD and come to expect similar features from graphic mining packages. Several developers of mining packagers have either attempted to include some CADD features or make their packages compatible with one or other CADD system. Mining can benefit greatly From a combination of interactive graphics (or CADD) and the right mining application software.

Business development process. Throughout Cyprus Amax's early months in Russia, the company stayed focused on what was needed from a deposit for economic success. Cyprus Amax's reason for success in Russia is that all involved - its Russian partners, the workforce and expatriates - provided a focused effort that served the project as it worked through the tender process and the Russian regulations. The company developed an understanding of the regulatory process by working with solid, ethical partners. Infused into the Kubaka management structure were Russians with the knowledge to facilitate the process and a professional group of expatriates. Developing credibility and a solid rapport with the Russian mining authority was critical to the success of this venture. Identifying and gaining the trust of key Russian individuals was also critical during the early stages. Gaining their trust and building credibility was part of the process. These key Russians were brought to the United States to visit existing Cyprus Amax mines. These efforts proved valuable in building an understanding with the Russians about the kind of company Cyprus Amax is and the kind of efficient operations that it can run. This was a learning process for all parties. Fortunately, the company was dealing with intelligent and educated people.

The restoration of surface mining landscapes requires the (re)creation of ecosystems. In Lusatia (eastern Germany), large-scale open-cast lignite mining operations generated spoil dumps widely consisting of acidified, phytotoxic substrates. Amelioration and rehabilitation measures have been developed and applied to these substrates since the 1950s. However, it is still not clear whether these approaches are sustainable. This paper reports on collaborative research work into the ecological potential of forest ecosystem development on typical minesites in the Lusatian lignite district. At first sight, pine stands on minesites along a chronosequence comprising about 35 years did not show differences when compared with stands on non-mined sites of the general region. Furthermore, with some modification, conceptual models for flora and fauna succession in forest stands on non-mined sites seem to be applicable, at least for the early stages of forest ecosystem development. For example, soil organism abundance and activity at minesites had already reached levels typical of non-mined sites after about 20-30 years. In contrast, mine soils are very different from non-mined soils of the test region. Chemically, mine soil development is dominated by processes originating from pyrite oxidation. Geogenic, i.e. lignitic, soil organic carbon was shown to substitute for some functions of pedogenic soil organic matter. Rooting was hampered but not completely impeded in strongly acidified soil compartments. Roots and mycorrhizae are apparently able to make use of the characteristic heterogeneity of young mine soils. Considering these recent results and the knowledge accumulated during more than 30 years of research on minesite rehabilitation internationally, it can be stated that minesite restoration might be used as an ideal case study for forest ecosystem development starting at "point zero" on "terra nova".

Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. A systematic, comprehensive, balanced approach is presented for underground coal mine design, capable of being standardized and generalized. This approach epitomizes professionalism and must preceed the physical product. Design involves a varied senior staff and requires extensive selective input data. Engineering follows a total systems approach, operating in and for a constricting geologic setting, heavily constrained for safety, health, and environmental protection. It must also anticipate execution and operation. Engineering prominence and momentum are maintained, with sub-optimizations balanced by judgments--the "art and science" of engineering. The flow-chart starts with organized input data: Company Capabilities, Property Description, Geologic Analysis and Reserve Analysis. Engineering combines Ground Control with Excavating and Bulk Handling to map feasible Mining Methods, the crucial Milestone Diagram. Layout and Sequencing follow, with numerous alternatives examined. Scheduling is performed on the best designs, using predicted advance (performance) rates. Active and mined-out areas are isolated into time-related parcels, or increments, for the mine life. Bulk Handling, Life Support (especially ventilation and drainage), and Normal Support systems occupy each parcel. Regulations are then checked. Management concerns are covered, and an Economic Analysis is performed for profitability. This and the design represent an Initial Tentative Solution. Continued iterations produce multiple and improved choices.

Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures. ? Driving visibility to targets and results. ? Leveraging the energy spent across the enterprise. ? Developing a robust energy and sustainability strategy. Additionally, it must ensure that all decisions support the financial and operational integrity of the business.

Electrostatic separation is one of the most misunderstood physical processes used to beneficiate minerals. Nonetheless, millions of tons of titanium ores, iron ores and other minerals are processed every year economically, efficiently and safely. Over the past ten years major advances in electrostatic separation and its application have occurred. New processes include dewatering clay slurries, separating halite and sylvite, and shape separation of vermiculite and gangue minerals. Electrostatic separation techniques are based on one of two methods, electrophoresis or dieleccrophoresis -- processes involving charged and uncharged particles respectively. In some cases, the combination of these two techniques has proven quite useful. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic understanding of the physical processes collectively called "electro- static separation" in order to enhance one's ability to define and consider new possibilities in mineral processing and other fields.

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. and an exasperated voice on the other end says, “There’s been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men!” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There’s something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we’re trying to figure out what’s wrong!” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings and an excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down both the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks!” As if this isn’t enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again and a stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Company No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine!” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, however, if this could happen, what on earth do you do? Although we all like to think that “It can’t happen to me,” we all must admit that mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. Your response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This paper will examine the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical “disaster” and then present a systematic crisis management response. While each situation is different, there are general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action.

The Hurtières Tunnel was built in 1995 with drill and blast method, in metamorphic schist. It is located between Lyon and Torino on the A 43 motorway in the French Alps. During the construction, a geological hazard was encountered, which caused a massive ground collapse. The tunnel was filled up with 3,000 m3of glacial materials. Geological investigations realized after the accident showed that a narrow glacial valley was present at this location the water table was 40 m above the tunnel level. The paper will describe the collapse and the remedial methods which were implemented to proceed through the failure area. These included drainage works,2,000 m3 grouting and 6,200 ml jet grouting columns.

"Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground support. Modern roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 5 × 5 foot pattern, and a 2.5 × 2.5 foot pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern.A series of numerical models were created using RocScience’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using Generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appears that the standard bolting pattern provides sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since factors of safety below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases considered. These results can help improve the Mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.INTRODUCTION AND CASE STUDY DESCRIPTIONLhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground limestone mine located in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. The mine is located under an 800-foot-high mountain, and outcrops on three sides. The mine is accessed through three separate portals and has two main levels, along with a partially developed third level. Extraction is accomplished by the room and pillar method using 50 × 50 feet pillars and 50 × 50 feet rooms. The mining height is limited to 50 feet to keep the pillar width to height ratio around 1.0. Each heading is excavated in a two-stage process that consists of a 30-foot-tall top heading and a 20-foot-tall bench. A distance of at least 30 feet is maintained between the two levels at all times (Crab Orchard Mine Technical Staff, 2017)."

The Westside Light Rail Project, a major 19.3-km (12-mile) extension of Portland, Oregon's light rail system, includes 4.6 km (2.8 miles) of twin 5.8-m (19-ft) diameter running tunnels, a binocular type station which, at 80 m (260 ft) below the ground surface, will be the deepest mass transit station in North America, two 9.4-m (31-ft) diameter station access shafts, and a 5.2-m (17¬ft) diameter ventilation shaft. The tunnels are being excavated by TBM and conventional rock, soft ground, and mixed-face methods. Geologic conditions, alignment, underground opening design, excavation method selection, and payment provisions for excavation and initial ground support are discussed.

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

The original patent for the gyratory crusher was granted to Philetus W. Gates in 1881. This first crusher was used by the Buffalo Cement Co. At the time these early gyratory crushers were developed all mining and quarrying, either underground or open pit, was done by hand; tonnages generally were small and product specifications simple and liberal. Likewise plants were small and demands for small product sizes practically nonexistent. In addition to substantial amounts of hand labor, the available material handling equipment was small, simple, and not suited to handling large run of mine ore. Mine can, cable ways, or belt conveyon transporting crushed material to the mill had limited capacity per hour. At the turn of the century the largest Gates crusher, the No. 9, had a receiving opening of 21 x 48 in. with a three-arm spider and a 21 x 80-in. opening with a two-arm spider. The steam shovel began to change the entire picture of open pit quarrying. As a result of the use of steam shovels around 1910 crushers with 48-in. receiving openings were built; thus it can be seen that the basic gyratory crusher was developed prior to World War I. The improvement of the internal combustion engine and the use of pneumatic tires created a new set of operating conditions. Early mines were small, using shrinkage stoping and small mine can. The capacity of material handling was small, limiting the size of the largest piece and the feed rate. Improved material handling resulted in more and more large open pit mines with large shovels and a tremendous increase in the size of off road or mine haul trucks or rail can. Primary gyratory crushers also increased with receiving openings as large as 60 in. and connected hp of 1,000.
