The Ag/S specific ion electrode has been evaluated for analysis of both free and total cyanide. Metal cyanide solutions were prepared from reagent grade compounds and by stoichiometric fixture of the metal with a potassium cyanide solution. Solutions containing Cu+1, Ni+2, Fe+2, Fe+3 and Zn+2 complexes were analyzed prior to and following EDTA pre treatment. This effort provides an understanding of the effect of each metal cyanide complex on the SIE analysis of free and "total" cyanide.

Water is the mainstay for the beneficiation of fine-size coal and minerals, but it is also the least desirable constituent of the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat absorption capacity of the individual particles. When a differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt that has been coated with low-temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt while the relatively cooler component will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal and quartz particles of 6 × 18 mesh size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating and system variables. Preliminary test results show that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

The Rondout Bypass Tunnel in New York has two access shafts. The upper sections of the shafts are lined with steel pipe to resist a substantial net internal water head . Initial design included a ¾-inch-thick cement mortar lining (CML) for all three components. Because of concerns with CML application on large-diameter pipes, the protective lining was redesigned for shotcrete application. This paper discusses the details of that design, mock-ups, and shotcrete application.

The construction mineral aggregates industry--the largest industry on a tonnage basis--is threatened with large shortages in the near future. Ironically, these common minerals which include sand, gravel, and stone are among the most plentiful in the earth's crust. However, as these minerals are low in value and used in large volumes, they are extremely sensitive to transport cost, e.g., a haul of 20 miles doubled the delivered cost of mineral aggregates. Consequently, these minerals must be located close to points of demand to have economic usefulness. But the development of new deposits is virtually impossible near many urban areas for legal, sociological and economic reasons. The spector of unfinished urban transport systems, curtailed residential construction, and a general deterioration of the physical urban plant, looms as a direct consequent of future mineral aggregate shortages in the U. S. metropolitan areas. The shortages of mineral aggregates in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area (G.N.Y.M.A.) are prototypical of the shortages faced by the U. S. Metropolitan areas. This paper presents an economic analysis of the consequences of not considering the broad aspects of conservation economics as a major component of resource management. The needless annual cost for the G.N.Y.M.A. is shown to be $30 million.

The Ernest Henry copper-gold project is located in North West Queensland, Australia and commenced production in late August 1997. Utilising a philosophy of selecting the biggest proven equipment available Ernest Henry at full production will treat 9 Mtpa through a single grinding line over a 15 year mine life. 350.000 tonnes of concentrate a year will be produced, containing 95,000 tonnes of copper and 120,000ounces of gold. The two mills recently commissioned at the Ernest Henry Copper/Gold Mine are a 10.4m x 5.1m (34 ft x 16.75 ft) SAG Mill and a 6.1m x 8.4m (20 ft x 27.5 ft) ball mill. The mills have a power draw of 11 MW (14745 hp) and 5.5 MW (7373hp) respectively. While the SAG Mill is not the largest SAG Mill in the world, it is the largest shell-supported SAG Mill in the world. The Ernest Henry mills epitomise the new standard design of large grinding mills. The design was introduced more than 20years ago and has been further developed from extensive experience with grinding mills and the need to produce a design, which overcomes the recognised problems of large mills. The result is a design with the potential to be used for mills up to the largest for which machine tools can be found to fabricate and machine them. currently approximately 15m (48')overall diameter.

Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses two uranium tailings waste disposal studies that reflect the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory actions and their changing requirements during the mid to late 1970's. Present guidelines require that all new uranium tailings impoundments be designed and constructed to eliminate, to the extent that it is reasonably achievable, exposures and risks to the public from the tailings. This includes positive measures for control of seepage losses from the impoundment and for control of radiological releases caused by wind and water erosion. Long-term stability of the reclaimed impoundment is also a very important requirement. That is, it is intended that the tailings impoundment, once it is reclaimed, will require little or no care or maintenance as long as the uranium tailings remain a hazard. Principally because of the long-term stability objective, the NRC has now identified subsurface burial of the tailings as the "prime option" for tailings disposal. The environmental implications of these proposed regulatory actions are obviously desirable. The economic implications the actions may have on a particular project are not always so obvious because they are so dependent on environmental suitability of site conditions. Selection of a site with favorable topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions will usually result in the most economically and environmentally attractive alternative for tailings disposal. The first project discussed in this paper was initiated before the NRC guidelines had been developed to favour subsurface burial. At the beginning, seepage and radon emission control requirements were moderate. Constraints were imposed on the design by site topography, geology, and project capitalization considerations, factors which were dealt with according to straightforward engineering and design principles. More serious constraints were imposed by changing regulatory requirements. Unlike the more usual engineeringrelated constraints, regulatory requirements were upgraded during the design process, causing the design itself to undergo numerous modifications. Carbonaceous material (CM) from the Barrick Goldstrike Mines, NV, was characterized with respect to its gold sorption (preg-robbing) and gold recovery behavior. The breadth of graphite peaks measured by X-ray diffraction were used to calculate crystallite dimensions (002) of the CM. The (002) dimension was found to vary inversely with preg-robbing activity and directly with gold-recovery behavior, indicating that the degree of graphitization (maturation) experienced by the carbonaceous material is correlated with gold-loss during ore processing. The inverse correlation of preg-robbing activity was improved when percent preg-robbing was regressed against (002) crystallite size and carbon content. The (101) crystallite dimensions of all samples were calculated from laser Raman analysis, and were not found to correlate with preg-robbing behavior of the CM. BET surface area and micropore size distribution results were affected by grinding history, negating comparison of these characteristics between samples.

As part of the waste characterisation program to address site reclamation, WISMUT GmbH initiated 56 columns operated as large-scale humidity cell tests. The columns were initiated to assess the acid generation characteristics of waste rock from 14 waste rock piles distributed around the site. Of the 56 tests, 11 are ongoing and have been operational in excess of 160 weeks. The results to date from these long-term tests are surnrnarised. In particular, the methods for, and importance of, establishing the availability of the carbonate neutralisation potential and acid generation potential respectively, are discussed. Geochemical controls on uranium, and the conformity between the geochemical models MINTEQA2 and EQ3/6 in assessing these controls are discussed. Testing indicates that waste rock with an MS-NP:AP ratio in excess of about 2.7 should result in net neutral pH conditions.

Introduction An engineer is a builder and a problem solver. He uses knowledge of the properties of matter and energy to furnish the needs of society. Engineers form the bridge between scientific researchers and the general public, most of whom are technologically illiterate. Mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineers extract minerals from the ground and process them into usable forms. Then, other engineers further process them into society's needs. Minerals engineers deal with more uncertainty than other engineers. Each ore deposit has its own personality and each ore is metallurgically unique. Minerals engineers, therefore, must be flexible, often applying larger safety factors and contingencies than other engineers, and frequently functioning as a jack of all trades. A minerals engineer can work in coal, oil, oil shale, base metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic minerals, or in exploration. Other mining jobs include banking and financing, education and research, marketing and sales, and government. As a minerals engineer, you may be among the first to work on the ocean floor or the moon. College Preparation A difference between college and industry is the type of problems to be solved. A typical college problem has an exact answer derived from given information. An industry problem is more apt to have a solution chosen from a number of alternatives. Information required for the solution is not given. It must be measured, calculated, looked-up, estimated, or otherwise derived. Solutions involve trade-offs, economics, and human factors, as well as application of physical laws and theory. When a college problem is answered, you move on to the next one. In industry, however, the headaches may just be starting with the implementation of the solution. Students often complain that they see little use for the theory they are learning. This is valid. A good professor will link theory and practice. Another difference between college and industry is the price of failure. In college, you can make a half-hearted effort in an assignment and take your C or D. On the job, however, poor engineering results in potentially effective projects being rejected and unsound projects being undertaken. Poor performance results in cost overruns, schedule holdups, oversights, disgruntled employees, irate bosses, unsafe structures, and unreliable systems. The costs are time, money, and possibly lives. The student pays the university for his work - not the other way around. So the rewards for good schoolwork often seem nebulous. But education must be viewed as an investment. Working for good grades will help you think better, learn more, receive better job offers, and perform more effectively on the job. There is no substitute for hard work. Avoid taking the easiest electives. If you desire a more liberal education or dislike rigorous physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering courses, change majors. Remember, you are training to be an engineer, not a computer programmer or market analyst. At least one summer of industry employment is necessary for minerals engineering students. The sooner you gain actual experience, the sooner you will know whether to change majors. Most large companies hire students during summer. It is best to send out applications around Christmas break. First and second year students usually work as laborers. Upper-classmen may work as engineering technicians. Students must sometimes choose between returning to a company at a higher position or trying a different company at a lower position, for more varied experience. Both alternatives have advantages. Do your best on these summer jobs. The company is watching. If you do well, the chances are good you will get a job offer when you graduate. Good references are important when you begin job hunting. Interviewing occurs near the end of your school career. The standard procedure is to send your resume with a cover letter to each company you are interested in. The resume for a graduating engineer with little experience need not exceed one page. The cover letter must be written for the individual company.

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.

The US Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamentals of the flocculation process. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various physico-chemical parameters, namely, shear rate, polymer dosage, and polymer concentration, on floc growth and to determine the applicability of a model for predicting polymer flocculation behavior. A rapid in-line particle size analyzer was used to follow the progress of both the floc growth and the breakage as a function of time. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to determine the unknown parameters in the model and to fit a curve to the experimental data. The results showed that the model reproduces the experimental data with only reasonable accuracy and that it was relatively insensitive to the parameters. Results of the flocculation study showed that increases in the polymer dosage had a greater effect on the time required to reach the maximum floc size than on the floc size itself: It was also determined that, given all the above parameters, the degree of slurry mixing during the flocculation process had the greatest bearing on floc growth.

"Pressure oxidation (POX) leaching of copper (Cu) concentrates continues to be explored as the next generation of leaching processes to sustain existing Cu Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) operations as easily leachable ores become scarcer. The leach liquors produced, particularly from total pressure oxidation, contain elevated concentrations of Cu and acid, making solvent extraction processing more challenging. Addressing this challenge will require innovative processing techniques and continuous improvement to be successful in achieving satisfactory physical and metallurgical performance in the SX plant. The ability to efficiently process these feeds via SX plays an important role in the continued success of POX technology. Characteristics of a concentrate leach pregnant leach solution (PLS) are discussed, along with best practices that should be considered for processing by SX. Findings discussed in this paper will shed light on ways to reduce process risk and bring additional improvement to the industry with minimal change to the SX plant. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates continues to gain interest from the industry. Treatment by smelting and electro refining continues to dominate, accounting for ~80% of global copper production, but is faced with its own challenges. The case for increased hydrometallurgical processing has been discussed as high grade ore deposits are diminishing, capital costs for smelting are high, and the environmental aspects present challenges for sustainable practice. The hydromet copper industry is also turning a corner as easily leachable copper oxide deposits are depleting, and excess SX-EW capacity exists in certain regions. The transition to hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates will take a bit of effort as leaching of copper sulfides is difficult and byproduct credits must be considered. Various POX leaching processes have been studied and proposed to the industry as viable practices. Of the many processes, commercial use has been practiced with the Mount Gordon Copper Process, total and partial pressure oxidation by Freeport-McMoRan at their Bagdad and Morenci, Arizona complexes, the Sepon Copper Process in Laos, and the bioleach BIOCOP™ process in Chile. The experience related to the current paper centers around Cu concentrate leaching performed by Freeport McMoRan (known as CLP). The patented process was developed as an alternative to smelting and refining in 1998. The technology applies to both molybdenum and copper concentrates. Commercial CLP research and development began with Phelps Dodge in 1999 to 2001. The first commercial plant was commissioned in 2003 at the Bagdad operation. Initial operating conditions of the Bagdad CLP were under high temperature conditions before converting in 2005 to medium temperature conditions. In 2007-2009, the CLP technology was commissioned in Morenci, operating medium temperature and high temperature lite conditions until shutting down due to the economic downturn. The Morenci CLP restarted operation in April 2015 due to acid production benefits for the Morenci leach operations. Renewed solvent extraction test work initiated well before restart and has been an ongoing focus for further SX plant optimization."

Asbestos production in the United States is no match for the vast operations of Canada and the U.S.S.R. The majority of U.S. production is limited to the states of Vermont, California and Arizona, and the type of asbestos is limited to the variety of serpentine known as chrysotile. What little production of other varieties of asbestos such as tremolite and anthophyllite that has occurred over the past 100 years since asbestos became a useful commodity is of practically no significance. However, new developments in the field of environmental and occupational health hazards has startled the mining industry in this country and has already given a few particular companies reason to be concerned about the profitability and probability of their continued operation in the business of mineral processing. At the heart of these developments is the question and controversy over just what constitutes asbestos and what exactly is the definition of a fiber. To the mineralogist or, in fact, to practically anyone engaged in the process of mining and separating minerals there is little or no question about asbestos. It is not a distinct mineral but rather a commercial product serving specific applications for which a number of fibrous mineral types can qualify. To the hygienist pr health authority this definition is too general. They demand something they can detect, measure and control. To suit their purposes and simplify their task of detection, they have labelled the minerals chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthoph-yllite and actinolite as asbestos, and any particle of these minerals with an aspect ratio of 3:1 as an asbestos fiber. Feeding bulk solids from bins or bunkers sometimes poses a problem to the materials handling engineer. The paper describes, by practical examples, how material flow can be improved on existing installations, and how difficult-to-handle materials can be successfully drawn from storage and fed to fully automated process systems. The examples illustrated are based on actual experience with projects designed for the mining and metallurgical industry. Maintenance costs, where available, are also indicated.

"What is your history and how did you get involved in mining?Like many SME members, I came from a mining community with a family history in mining, in my case Walkerville, MT. Both of my grandfathers were underground miners. My father was a miner for a short time. He later sold drinks to the miners. Unfathomable by today’s standards, my dad would pick up the miners’ checks at the pay office and have them cashed and waiting with a shot and beer for the miners when their shift ended. My mother was a nurse, who from time to time, would patch up an unfortunate miner. I remember walking past multiple picket lines on the way to and from grade school, watching homes being boarded-up. I grew up with a deep respect for the critical relationship between labor and management.I had no intention of going into mining and initially set out to pursue a career in chemical engineering. But I attended my first two years of engineering at Montana Tech, due to the proximity and affordability. This is where I met Dr. Tom Finch, a mining professor who taught statics to the engineering students. After a coaching session in a hallway, half way through my sophomore year, I switched to mineral processing engineering. In his colorful way, Professor Finch advised me that, “You do not want to make #@*!! erasers and #@*!! Jell-O the rest of your life go talk to the guys in mineral processing.” He was very persuasive and here I am today.How about your involvement with SME?I encountered SME out of school and a little later in my career. Terry Maio and Jim Arnold invited me to local section meetings in the Missouri Lead Belt. That was my first exposure to the technical programming and relationship building that was possible at the local level. After Ozark Lead shut down and I relocated to Nevada, Rich Johnson, Scott Barr and Dave Collins encouraged me to attend my first annual meeting in Salt Lake City, UT. I joined SME at that time and was fortunate to be engaged by members like Art Schweizer and Jim Arnold, and I soon began the leadership progression for the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division. Since then, I have supported SME at the national and the local level serving in multiple roles and capacities."

Application of an SEM-based methodology suggests a reason for past contradictory results on the relationship between quartz and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). Results indicate that coal seams with the same bulk analysis of quartz have different amounts of surface-available quartz. Our research shows that the amounts of pure and surface-available quartz in a respirable dust vary directly with the rank of a coal seam, except in the case where rock materials are mined. The estimated amount of surface- available quartz therefore provides a measure of the quartz-related fibrogenic potential of a respirable dust.

The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km'- (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of 16 out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output.
