"INTRODUCTION Mining and processing of sulfide ore bodies has the potential to solubilize sulfate. Gypsum in the host rock, as well as oxidation of sulfides during milling and processing can solubilize sulfate. Acid rock drainage (ARD) also has the potential to generate waters high in sulfate. Even after treatment of the ARD with lime, the treated water can have sulfate present in gypsum saturation levels. Most mine-sites reuse sulfate impacted water but as a mine nears closure, reuse options may be limited and water treatment becomes an option. Furthermore, sulfate discharge requirements, particularly for anti-degredation narrative standards, can be very strict. Freeport has investigated many new technologies to economically remove sulfate from these types of water. A Dutch company, Paques B.V. developed one of these technologies and it utilized biological reactors to convert sulfate into elemental sulfur in a 2-step process. In 1992 the first industrial reference of the SULFATEQTM technology was commissioned at the Nystar Budel zinc refinery in the Netherlands. PILOT PLANT TECHNOLOGY AND DESCRIPTION As shown in Figure 1, the plant contains several process steps, which can mainly be divided into the following sections: 1. Anaerobic biological system in which sulfate is reduced to hydrogen sulfide by sulfate reducing bacteria. 2. Aerobic biological system in which hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to elemental sulfur by sulfide oxidizing bacteria. 3. Solid/liquid separation in which sulfur, calcium carbonate and biomass solids are separated and dewatered. Sulfate impacted ground water is pumped to the feed water tank through a plate and frame heat exchanger to maintain the solution temperature around 95°F. A custom mix of micronutrients is dosed to the feed tank. This nutrient mixture provides essential elements for the growth of anaerobic and aerobic biomass. Urea is added to the feed tank and provides the required nitrogen source to the biomasses. The pretreated feed water is pumped into the anaerobic reactor. The reactor works on the gas lift principle. Sulfate reducing bacteria utilize hydrogen gas as electron donors and reduce sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. This reaction increases the alkalinity of the solution. Carbon dioxide gas is added in order to control the pH within working range of the reactor. Due to the low solubility of the hydrogen gas, the anaerobic gas mixture is recycled through the system. The gas mixture recycle also provides the gas lift for mixing within the anaerobic reactor."

2.1 INTRODUCTION When total extraction of an opening of sufficient size is reached in a horizontal coal seam, the roof strata in the overburden deform continuously to reach a new equilibrium condition. The severity of deformation decreases upward toward the surface. As the downward saggings of the strata propagate and reach the surface, there will be a depression zone on the surface directly above, but extending beyond the edges of the underground opening. This is the surface subsidence basin or surface subsidence trough. The surface subsidence basin is circular in plan view, if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is square in shape. But it is rectangular with rounded corners or elliptical if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is a long- and thin rectangle or a short-rectangular, respectively (Fig. 2.1). Most underground openings (e.g., longwall panel) assume rectangular shape when total extraction has been completed. Theoretically the edges of the subsidence basin are the points of zero subsidence. But it is difficult to exactly locate the points of zero subsidence. Therefore in practice the points with vertical subsidence of 0.4 in. (10 mm) are used. The final subsidence basin is that which exists long after the mining has been completed, because its magnitude and shape are quite different from the dynamic subsidence basin formed while the face is moving. 2.2 CHARACTERISTICS AND TYPES OF DEFORMATION IN THE FINAL SUBSIDENCE BASIN For a horizontal coal seam, every point in the subsidence basin moves toward the center of the basin. Subsidence is maximum at the center of the basin. Any cross-section that passes through the point of maximum subsidence and either parallel to AB or CD line (Fig. 2.1) is a major cross-section along which principal directions of surface movements occur. However among those infinite numbers of major cross-sections, two specific ones are of special significance, not only because the magnitudes of surface movements are the largest, but also because they are the most easily identifiable directions, i.e., one that is parallel to the faceline at the center of the basin (CD in Fig. 2.1) and' the other is that perpendicular to the faceline but parallel to the diction of face advance (AB in Fig. 2.1). Nearly all the subsidence data obtained in the US have been derived from these two cross-sections, although some cross- sections parallel to CD but near the edges of the panel have also been included. In addition to moving horizontally toward the center of the basin, every point in the basin also subsides vertically. The magnitude of subsidence increases toward the center of the basin. Therefore surface subsidence is a three-dimensional problem and should be treated so in all cases. On all the major cross-sections, only principal subsidence and principal displacement occur. Since subsidence and displacement vary continuously in every major cross-section, three additional deformation components are de- rived, i.e., slope, curvature, and strain. On all other non-major cross-sections on the other hand the five components are accompanied by two additional components, i.e., twisting and shear strain. The seven components of the surface movement are defined as follows (Fig. 2.2): 1. Subsidence, S. On any cross-section, the vertical component of the surface movement vector is called surface subsidence. It generally points downward. But sometimes it points upward in areas ahead of the faceline or beyond the edges of the opening. In such cases it is a surface heave which is usually less than 6 in. 2. Displacement, U. On any cross-section, the horizontal component of the surface movement vector is called surface horizontal displacement. It generally points toward the center of the subsidence basin. But in steep terrain, it moves along the downdip direction 3. Slope, i. On any cross-section, the difference in surface subsidence between the two end points of a line section divided by the horizontal distance between the two points is called the surface slope of the section. 4. Curvature, K. On any cross-section, the difference in surface slope between two adjacent line sections divided by the average length of the two line sections is called the surface curvature of those two line sections. There are two types of curvature: con- vex or positive curvature and concave or negative curvature. 5. Horizontal strain, e. On any cross-section, the difference in horizontal displacement between any two points divided by the distance between the two points is called horizontal strain. If the distance between the two points is lengthening, it is tensile strain with positive sign. Conversely, if it is shortening, it is compressive strain with negative sign 6. Twisting, T. On the surface of the subsidence basin, the difference in slope between two parallel line sections divided by the distance between the two line sections is called twisting. 7. Shear strain, y. Shear strain is the changes in internal angles of a square on the surface of the subsidence basin or on any major cross-section. It is the summation of the differences in incremental (or decremental) lengths between the two opposite sides divided by the original distance between the two opposite sides. More precisely, the surface deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, curvature, twisting and shear) are defined by derivatives of surface movement components. For simplicity, the x- and y-axes of the cartesian coordinate system are set to be parallel and perpendicular to the cross-section of interest, respectively. In such a coordinate system, slope and curvature along x direction are the first and the second derivatives of the vertical components (S) of surface movement with respect to x, respectively, or i, = ds/dx and kx = d2s/dx2. The analytical approaches used to solve a specific problem are dependent upon the information required, coupled with limitations imposed by available facilities, costs, and time. The organic matter associated with ore deposits has the potential to yield information for two problems. Information can be obtained to provide guidelines for prospecting, and, secondly, to solve genetic problems. A major potential of organic matter in providing prospecting guides lies in the high thermal sensitivity of organic matter in sediments which are metamorphosed at grades lower than greenschist facies. The organic matter can then be used to map thermal anomalies potentially associated with mineralization. The analytical approach is to determine the thermal maturity of the total organic matter, or of specific fractions, using techniques which are relatively quick and inexpensive. Consideration of genetic models (for example, reduction, complexing, involvement of oil field brines) generally requires more specific information than the overall thermal maturity of the organic matter, necessitating infor¬mation on molecular composition and structure. The facilities, time, and cost of this information are greater than for mapping thermal anomalies. The analytical techniques discussed include elemental analyses, spectroscopy (infra-red, visible and ultra-violet), Fourier Transform infra-red, nuclear magnetic resonance, extraction, pyrolysis techniques, chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Methane drainage by cross-measure boreholes on retreat longwall faces can be a viable alternative to the vertical gob degas boreholes under favorable circumstances. The research was done in a mine working Pittsburgh Coal seam in Northern West Virginia under U.S.B.M. Co-operative Agreement No. 14-09-0050-3252. The study was the first application of this technique to Pittsburgh coal seam. A total of fourteen, small diameter, inclined boreholes were drilled over a retreat longwall panel from gate roads, to intersect the overlying coal seams. All boreholes were manifolded to a pipeline and the gob gas was extracted by an exhaust fan on surface. The methane capture ratio was poor at 7 to 18% at various stages of the longwall panel. A vertical gob degas borehole captured an additional 20% gas. Poor results were due to premature failures of the cross-measure boreholes leading to air leakage. For better performance the boreholes should be drilled from a point 30 to 45 m from longwall pillar over the largest chain pillar, the standpipe should be grouted for at least 6 m, and the entry containing boreholes and the pipeline must be supported to ensure access for maintenance, and optimization of methane capture. Coursing the ventilation air around longwall such that it forces methane-migration towards cross-measure boreholes can further improve methane capture. The optimum vertical inclination is 45° ± 10°.

The nature of surface sites for the adsorption of gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using samples of synthetic, highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). This HOPG material offers an idealized graphite structure enabling the independent study of the graphitic basal-plane sites and the edges, or defect sites, of the graphitic planes. Radiochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic experiments independently demonstrated that gold adsorption was much higher on the edges (defects) of the graphite planes than on the planes themselves. These results suggest that site-specific adsorption is prevalent in the adsorption of gold by graphitic carbons (including activated carbon, carbon black and graphite) and that most of the favored sites are at edge defects in the graphite crystal structure.

Long-term production scheduling design is a very important part of mining because it determines the economic outcome of a project There have been many attempts to solve the optimum pit scheduling problem, but there has been no success in developing a scheduling method to give optimum results in maximizing net present value of a mining project. Open pit production scheduling problem can be formulated as a mathematical programming problem and solved using Mixed Integer Programming technique. However, it is not possible to solve the formulation within a reasonable time since the number of integer variables required for the mathematical model is too great to do that by today's available computer technology. There- fore, a methodology is required to combine, or aggregate, the mining blocks and to decrease the number of integer variables in scheduling without losing the optimality. Therefore, the fundamental tree concept was developed in this paper to combine the blocks. A fundamental tree is defined as any combination of blocks such that: 1. the blocks can be profitably mined, 2. the blocks obey the slope constraints and, 3. there is no subset of the chosen blocks that meets 1 and 2. A Linear Programming (LP) formulation is developed as a mathematical model to find a set of fundamental trees that exist for a deposit. Since the blocks are combined to form the fundamental trees, the number of variables required for the scheduling model is decreased significantly. This decrease in the number of variables makes it possible to mathematically formulate the multi-time period scheduling problem as a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model. A case study is performed on a multi-mineral copper deposit in Peru, South America. NPVs of annual after-tax cash flows generated based on the schedule provided by the "Fundamental Tree Algorithm" is compared with NPVs resulted from the schedules coming from three of the computer packages presently available to the mining industry. These are Mintec's M821V, Earth- work's NPV Scheduler, and Whittle's Milava open pit mine schedulers.

Doyashiki Concentrator in Hanaoka mine of Dowa Mining Co., Ltd. started the operation in 1943, treating the ore mainly from Doyashiki ore deposits. After the cessation of mining of Doyashiki ore body in 1973, Doyashiki concentrator began to treat the ore from Fukazawa mine instead in the same year, and furthermore the ore from Ezuri mine In 1979. Currently Doyashiki concentrator treats 30,000 tons of ore per month from both mines. The ore treated is complex sulfide ore, called "Kuroko" (black ore), and the principal minerals contained in the ore are chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and barite, accompanied by bornite, tetrahedrite, tennantite, covellite, stromeyerite, argentite, polybasite, pearcite, and electrum. The Principal gangue minerals are quartz, gypsum and clay. The grade of the feed to the concentrator averages 0.9 p/t Au, 110 g/t Ag, 1.1 %Cu, 2.8 %Pb, 9.2 %Zn, 5.0 % Pyrite-S and 13% BaS04. The feed is, after washing and two-stage crushing, ground to 88% minus 200 mesh in a rod mill and ball mills with cyclone classifiers, and five concentrates are recovered by flotation. Primarily copper-lead bulk concentrate is recovered by sulfurous acid-lime flotation method, and then from the bulk concentrate copper concentrate is floated by hot pulp flotation method, sinks being lead concentrate. Zinc concentrate is recovered from the tailing of copper-lead bulk flotation, pyrite concentrate from zinc flotation tailing and barite concentrate from pyrite flotation tailing. The final tailing is sent to the dam.

Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the potential for metal removal and recovery from river bed tailings by ferric chloride leaching. The lead, zinc, silver and other metals in the river bed occur due to the old method of dumping mill tailings into rivers. This was practiced prior to the introduction of tailings impoundments. The effects of the leaching method, leaching time, pulp density, ferric chloride concentration, and leaching temperature on the rates and recoveries of lead, zinc and silver were studied. The effects of pulp density and leaching temperature were significant on the extraction rates of lead, zinc and silver. The lead content in the leached tailing was reduced to 0.023 percent, when using an 353O K leaching temperature and 0.384 g of FeC13/1 g of sample.

The Navajo Mine is exclusively a multiple-seam surface coal mine located in the northwest comer of New Mexico. The property is situated entirely on the Navajo Indian Reservation. It is owned and operated by the Broken Hill Propriety Co. Ltd., of Melbourne, Australia. The mine began production in January 1963 with a long-term fuel supply agreement with the Four Corners power plant. The 2175 MW nominal generating capacity of the Four Corners powerplant consumes 7.2 Mt to 7.7 Mt/a (8 million to 8.5 million stpy) of coal. The Navajo Mine has estimated reserves totaling 1 Gt (1. I billion st) of strip minable coal. Only about one-third of that total is presently committed to the generating station. As development continued over the years, mining operations advanced into more complex geologic areas to satisfy the utility's demand for coal. To optimize the committed reserve and provide competitively priced coal to the customer, the Navajo Mine began developing a new pit in June 1986. The Dixon Pit boxcut development was completed in April 1987. About 6 hm3 (7.9 million cu yd) were stripped, uncovering 929 kt (1 million st) of coal. Strip ratio was 7.74:1 including 36.8% rehandle of prime yardage. This case study of the fourth production cut highlights a variety of dragline stripping techniques including highwall bench (overburden) side cast, intermediate highwall bench (parting-interburden) side cast and spoilside bench (partings-interburden) stripping methods. The Dixon Pit offers considerable challenges in the surface recovery of up to seven seams of coal within the 1432 m (4700 ft) of total pit length.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to supplement its two existing main fans. The third fan will operate in parallel with the two existing fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, NM, is a US Department of Energy (DOE), Carlsbad Area Office, facility that is designed to permanently dispose of US defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep, bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for modifying, supplementing or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel et al., 1997) to identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling con¬straints. WIPP was scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP 's ability to declare facility readiness. Therefore, operational disruptions during the system tie-in had to be minimized. All engineering for the project has been com¬pleted, and physical modifications were begun in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

Coal is a term applied to vegetable matter (trees, grasses, etc.) which was subjected to heat and pressure through geologic ages. This resulted in a change in both the physical and chemical properties. Because its chemical composition is variable, geologists classify coal as a heterogeneous mineral rather than a homogeneous mineral. Peat represents the initial, unconsolidated stage in the development of coal. This coalification continues with time and the application of temperature and pressure to lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, and anthracite toward the theoretical graphite end member.

With increased CO2 emissions from steel and coal industry, there is great opportunity to capture CO2 and utilize the captured CO2 for economic advantage. The primary goal is to develop energy-efficient processes that reductively couple CO2, an abundant and renewable carbon source, for the production of value-added chemicals such as methanol, ethanol, and oxalic acid. These chemicals can be used elsewhere in the refining process or sold as valuable by-products. Geological sequestration, in comparison, has no economic return. Current CO2 utilization research at Michigan Technological University focuses on electrochemical reduction of CO2. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and other chemicals is a complex multistep reaction with adsorbed intermediates. The exact reaction mechanisms leading to various products are not clear from the literature to date and will likely change over the range of conditions like pH, electrode potential, electrolyte medium, catalyst, etc. This paper will present different ideas and their viability to utilize CO2 as a feedstock to produce several value-added compounds. INTRODUCTION Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere will need to be drastically reduced to curb the various undesirable effects of climate change. The large contribution in total CO2 emission originates from coal or natural gas power plants, and a considerable amount from steel plants. Average CO2 emissions in the US from steel industry is 2.9t CO2/t steel (Global CCS Institute 2013). Capturing the available CO2 from the steel and coal industries for economic advantage is a win-win situation for the industry. This technology is not only important scientifically but is also vital for a sustainable future. The various ongoing investigations can be categorized as biochemical, thermochemical, photochemical, and electrochemical approaches. Among these, the electrochemical method shows the most promise as an efficient form of CO2 conversion technology, because of its many advantages like high reactivity under ambient conditions and good extensibility from small- to large-scale processes1 BACKGROUND Extensive research has been done on the chemistry of transforming carbon dioxide into more useful products. Methods are known to convert carbon dioxide into a wide variety of substances, including methanol, isobutanol, carbohydrates, methane, carbonates, urea, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide, epoxides, formaldehyde, and so on. Several of these (carbohydrates, formaldehyde, isobutanol etc.) are primarily results from biological processes. The rest are results of strong reduction reactions or electrolytic reduction. In short, electrolytic reduction can be used to form methane, methanol, formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide2. CO2 reduces at the cathode in an electrolysis cell. These processes have the general form of generating the carbon dioxide anion radical (2⋅−) and allowing it to react with itself or the electrolyte3. Catalysts can be added to influence the formation of the anion radical or to suppress side reactions3. The electrolyte, catalyst, voltage, electrode material and CO2 content are all known to effect the reaction pathway. Table 1 shows the overall reactions and energy requirements for electrochemical conversion of CO2 to chemicals

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. See Figure 1.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an intelligent system for roof' control that uses both an expert system and neural networks to improve the capability of mining engineers to evaluate roof support effectiveness for ground control in coal mines. The expert system com- pares roof support capacities with the support requirements estimated to be necessary to maintain entry stability. It does this by evaluating the results of tests on various types of roof support and establishing the maximum allowable load according to anchorage capacity and yield strength of the support. After the user enters geological information (rock properties, geometry of the opening, in situ stresses, bolt pattern parameters, etc. ), the expert system compares the predicted required loading to the roof support capacity and gives the operator advice on the adequacy of the design and how improvements could be made. A good source of the real-time data necessary to allow the expert system to make decisions will come from a roof bolting machine being developed by the Bureau of Mines. Researchers have collected data from a Western coal mine on drill bit position, penetration rate thrust, torque, and rotation rate. Using this information, two neural net- works were developed to identify different types of strata and features in a mine roof such as rock type, rock compressive strength and joint characteristics. The result is a system that can assist a mining engineer with design information that can be constantly updated as mining progresses.

An examination of the statistics of the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals an increasing tendency for fertilizer manufacturing activity to concentrate in phosphate rock mining areas. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping more valuable finished fertilizers will always be resolved in favor of the latter if cost considerations control the decision. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer manufacturing capacity oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent these changes are. These questions are the subject of this investigation.

This paper discusses a laboratory investigation that studied the microscale flow characteristics of copper ores and the variation in flow behavior resulting from flow of leach solution. Fractures in 40- and 100-mm-diam (1.5- and 4-in.-diam) cores were first mapped by visual inspection. The permeability of cores to water-stressed in a triaxial stress field representative of in situ conditions - was estimated. The samples were then exposed to 20g/L (2.7 oz/gal) sulfuric acid and the experiment was repeated. The porosity and the rate of recovery of copper from the specimen during leaching were also studied. The measured permeability of unleached samples with no visible fractures ranged from 10-16 to 10-19 m2 and it increased as leaching progressed. The porosity increased significantly with leaching, while the rate of copper recovery decreased.

In the past three years there has been a great amount of attention given to phosphates world wide, and in particular to the Florida Phosphate Industry. I would like to relate some of the most recent history of the industry and give you a personal outlook for the future. Phosphate rock has been produced in Florida since its discovery on the Peace River in the 1880's. Through 1976, approximately 720 million ST of rock had been mined from Florida reserves, and it is my opinion that there are at least 1.2 billion tons remaining which are consolidated, accessible and can reasonably be expected to be permitted for mining. Over half the 1.2 billion tons will be deeper, more scattered, leaner and will produce lower grade rock than the Bone Valley of Central Florida has tradition-ally produced. In 1973, '74, '75 and '76 the Florida Phosphate Industry produced 32.6, 34.0, 38.2 and (38.0) (P) million ST of phosphate rock respectively. This rock was produced by ten mining companies, Agrico, Borden, Brewster Phosphates, Gardinier, Grace, IMC, Mobil, Occidental, Swift, and USS Agri-Chem; mines are located -17 in Polk County, one in Hillsborough County and two in Hamilton County, Florida. Phosphate rock is used by local companies in Florida primarily to produce phosphoric acid from which DAP and TSP is manufactured. Florida acid producers use about 15 million STPY in acid plants in Florida, and another 7.5 million STPY is consumed by acid producers in plants on and near the Mississippi River. Somewhat

Blebs of solid bitumen from the Magmont West orebody of the Viburnum Trend were examined and analyzed in an attempt to relate hydrocarbon distribution and origin to ore genesis. The bitumen was calculated to be approximately 48 to 63 percent aliphatic and is considered to be a polymerized normal crude oil. Polymerization, which was probably caused by water-washing, hardened the bleb surfaces and appears to have "frozen" the blebs during primary migration from local source beds. Comparison of the bitumen to kerogen in local shaly partings strongly Indicates that the oil was derived locally. The polymerized oil blebs are considered to have been derived from a type II (marine) kerogen. Textural analyses indicate that oil migration occurred after lead-zinc mineralization and at temperatures that exceed normal ancient or present geothermal gradients. The following sequence of events is postulated for the Magmont West orebody: 1 Generation of hydrogen sulfide during diagenesis of a normal organic-rich carbonate sequence. 2 Introduction of pulses of hot, metal-rich fluids that resulted in: a Lead-zinc mineralization by the following reaction: Me++ + H2S ? MeS + 2H+ b Solution of carbonates by excess acid produced during the above reaction. c Brecciation of host rock in some cases. 3 Passages of the pulse resulted in: a Carbonate buffering of fluid system to more alkaline conditions. b Precipitation of dolomite c Slight temperature drop. 4 Eventually the high temperatures Introduced by heated brine caused oil generation and initiated primary migration. 5 Water-washing and mild biodegradation altered the hydrocarbon blebs to their present composition.

Reconstruction of historical exposures to silica dust is required in an ongoing cohort mortality study of workers in the diatomaceous earth (DE) industry. However, historical data were collected using three different sampling methods. This study was conducted to derive empirical quantitative relationships from linear regression equations between the three methods: standard impinger, total mass, and respirable mass. Dust from one diatomaceous earth processing plant was sampled simultaneously by all three methods. Results from 61 clusters of the three sampling devices indicate that the phcle size distribution of the dust varies with the two parent products sampled. baghouse product and main product. The relationships between particle counts and respirable mass are: Respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.064 (mppd) impinger count for baghouse product dust, and respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.018 (mppcf) impinger count for main product dust. The relationships between particle counts and total mass are: Total mass (mg/m3) = 0.837 (mppcf) impinger count for baghouse product, and total mass (mg/m3) = 1.21 (mppcf) for main product dust. In all four euuations, the intercept did not differ significantly from zero, and the correlation coefficients ranged from 0.90 to 0.95. Results are compared with data from four previously published studies.
