The dissolution behavior of copper and gold from their pure state and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of the composition of the alloys, stirring speed of the disc, concentration of lixiviants and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Gold/copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percent of gold in these alloys was 75, 50 and 25, respectively. The dissolution behavior of these three alloys was compared with that of pure gold and of copper under the same chemical conditions. In general, the dissolution of copper and gold from alloys is partially controlled by surface chemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge”, Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling, with high-pressure grinding. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation, and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed set up to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of highpressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone, and final stage total circuit energy savings, exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.

Concealed thermal events in longwall gobs present safety hazards for underground coal miners and can significantly interrupt mining production. The probable causes for such thermal events range from coal oxidation at slightly above ambient temperature to smoldering fires due to spontaneous combustion of the broken coal left in the gobs. Locating such “hot spots” is the key step for planning and implementing mitigation measures to bring such thermal events under control. If a mine section, or even an entire mine, has to be sealed, understanding the status of the sealed mine atmosphere is important for the decisions guiding subsequent actions. The gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system is firsthand information of great value. Fire ratios proposed by various researchers and derived from gas composition data are useful in determining the fire status and even approximating the source locations (Timko and Derick, 2006). However, the applicability of each of these ratios under particular conditions should be carefully evaluated. The use of properly combined fire ratios can enhance the certainty of analysis. The explosibility of a sealed mine atmosphere deserves primary concern for safety reasons during seal construction, idle time and reopening of the sealed area.Mine atmospheric monitoring data from a longwall mine with flame fire have been analyzed. Efforts have been made to identify the possible causes, locations and statuses of these events using the obtained gas data, as well as other ventilation, geological and mining parameters. The effect of injected inert gas to control the events has also been quantified. The explosibility of the sealed atmosphere has been determined using two methods.

Research activities performed by Cleveland-Cliffs Research and Hibbing Taconite plant personnel during the last decade have resulted in the development of an improved autogenous mill grinding circuit. Minus one (1) inch autogenous mill trommel oversize material, con-sidered to be a critical size, is magnetically cobbed and then crushed to 100% minus 3/8" prior to reentry into the feed end of the mill. Autogenous mill capacity increases, up to 25%, have been measured in pilot plant tests using this approach and are also anticipated for the Hibbing Taconite concentrator which presently has reached a 15.5% improvement.

Experiment shows that the microbial degradation of pyrite does not necessarily proceed stoichiometrically. Under some conditions sulfur is oxidized preferentially leaving something approaching iron in composition; under others, the pyrite is converted almost to elemental sulfur. A kinetic model for the process based on three elementary biochemical reactions can explain these observations. The diffusion of sulfur along grain boundaries and dislocations in the solid pyrite uncouples the oxidation rates of sulfur and iron from the requirements of stoichiometry. This mechanism also explains qualitatively why bacteria adsorb preferentially at dislocation sites on pyrite surfaces, why they form "pits" at these sites, and why amorphous pyrite is more readily degraded than pure crystals. Introduction Since its creation in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a wide-ranging program of research on mining technology. Over the years, the Bureau has perhaps become best known for its accomplishments in mine health and safety technology, a field that has been the object of much public attention. Nevertheless, the Bureau's program in other areas of mining technology has always been strong and remains so today. A distinguishing feature of the current effort is its tendency to concentrate on high-risk, high-gain projects. Throughout the federal research establishment, the Administration's policy has been to phase out short-term research that could be performed by private industry, in favor of long-terms projects that industry cannot usually afford to fund. This tendency is evident in the following account of the highlights of the Bureau's current mining technology research program. Underground Mining Technology Fragmentation. Research studies on fragmentation have focused on nonexplosive concepts. If successfully developed, these concepts would lend themselves to continuous automated operation and reduce time and costs of fragmentation in underground mines. A special laboratory-scale device to investigate ripper cutting was designed and fabricated in 1982. Experiments were conducted with large drag cutters to develop an efficient cutting technique for hard rock. Tests were successfully conducted with 76- and 152-mm (3¬and 6-in.) bits in rocks up to 138-MPa (20,000-psi) compressive strength. Because of the success of these initial tests, larger-scale proof-of-concept tests are planned. To prepare for these tests, a tester capable of cutting a 1.8-m (6-ft) opening was fabricated. This device will allow ripper cutting to be carried out at full scale, and will also allow mucking and holddown requirements to be investigated. Preliminary estimates indicate that this concept has the potential to double excavation rates while reducing costs up to 30%. Mobile Hydraulic Monitor. A mobile hydraulic monitor system was designed, fabricated, and used to mine the St. Peter sandstone at an average rate of 22 t/h (25 stph) from a face in Martin-Marietta's foundry sand mine at Clayton, IA. A slurry transport system worked in tandem with jet cutting, resulting in a continuous mining and transport system. Problems with spray from the jet hitting the sandstone showed that a remote-controlled mobile monitor was needed at a station 15 m (50 ft) from the face, so the operator would have a clear view of the face and be safely out of the backwash. Crushers. Research on crushing systems to improve efficiency in underground mines is continuing. Final testing of a low-profile, portable crusher for underground applications has begun. A system for handling oversize feed to the crusher was conceived and tested. Underground crushing systems, portable enough to be kept near the face, offer considerable improvement in materials handling because main haulage by conveyor is often less costly. Hoists. Research to increase hoisting efficiency and speed and to reduce energy requirements has led to experimental ore skips. The skips feature guide rollers to improve riding characteristics, bearing improvement at critical locations, and weight savings of about 1.8 t (2 st). An experimental aluminum skip was installed last year at Kerr McGee's Church Rock mine. Performance is being monitored under production conditions. A portable service hoist for low-cost, efficient movement of men and supplies in raises between mine levels was designed, fabricated, and tested on the surface. The pressure filtration behavior of dispersed and flocculated alumina slurries at high percent loadings is discussed with an objective to determine the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by surfactants that are considered to act by electric and steric stabilizers. The effect of both the ionic and nonionic surfactants was investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and final cake properties are discussed.

With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive mining costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man-power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels ,mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor)and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accurate and detailed planning of predictable manpower requirements. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes.

Silver sulphide (acanthite) and lead sulphide (galena) dissolve relatively rapidly in FeCl3 media with the formation of elemental sulphur and soluble silver and lead chlorides. Parabolic kinetics are observed, and the leaching rates are controlled by the outward diffusion of the AgCl and PbCl2 reaction products through the constantly thickening elemental sulphur layer formed on the sulphide. Hence, both leaching rates are strongly dependent on those variables which affect the solubility of AgCl or PbCl2 at the reaction interface. The rates therefore increase with increasing temperature and total chloride ion concentration, but decrease in the presence of elevated concentrations of AgCl or PbCl2. By contrast, neither sulphide is significantly attacked by ferric sulphate media, even at high Eh values. Although the reasons for the refractory behaviour of Ag2S in sulphate media remain unknown, the low rate of PbS attack is attributable to the passivating layer of PbSO4 and elemental sulphur formed on the surface of the galena.

"Bastnaesite is one of the important mineral resources for the production of rare earth materials, and it is typically associated with calcite and quartz as gangue minerals. Fatty acid or hydroxamic acid are recommended collectors for bastnaesite flotation. In this research, potassium lauryl phosphate was expected to provide a stronger flotation response for bastnaesite than for the calcite and quartz gangue minerals. Using potassium lauryl phosphate as collector, the results of captive bubble contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and microflotation experiments for bastnaesite, calcite and quartz are reported. Greater selectivity for bastnaesite was achieved using potassium lauryl phosphate than using octyl hydroxamate as collector. These results indicate that potassium lauryl phosphate might be a promising collector in the flotation of bastnaesite ores. The computation results of universal force field (UFF) interaction energies for the mineral-reagent interactions are also reported and were found to correlate well with the experimental microflotation results.IntroductionBastnaesite ((Ce,La)FCO3) belongs to the mineral class of semisoluble salt minerals, whose characteristics include ionic bonding and limited solubility in water. Bastnaesite, for the most part, contains the cerium subgroup or the lighter rare earth elements (Zhou et al., 2014). The Mountain Pass deposit in California in the United States and the Bayan Obo deposit in Mongolia in China are the two major deposits of bastnaesite (Azizi et al., 2016; Satur et al., 2016). One of the prime objectives of the mine industry is to develop a low cost way to clean up what has been called "The Rape Of Mother Nature". The project falls under the broad umbrella of reclamation, which is now considered an essential part of the mining cycle. As such, it is being given full consideration in the initial planning of all surface operations. In most areas, if a proposed mining system does not lend itself to proper reclamation, it is not an acceptable system. By combining mining and reclamation plans, a producer not only can minimize reclamation costs, but can also restore the land to usefulness and insure continuing profits after a deposit is depleted. As long as fifteen years ago, many of the larger mining companies were already deeply involved in this extra cost work. Even then the involved companies were projecting a great need for a bigger bulldozer, Bigger than anything commercially available. At that time, the D9 tractor weighed about 60,000# bare weight.

Several refractory sulfide and carbonaceous gold ores were examined to determine whether microbial pretreatment could be used to enhance gold recovery. Test samples were biologically leached using unique, thermophilic microorganisms to solubilize iron sulfide minerals. Gold recovery from sulfide ores and concentrates was enhanced following pretreatment with the thermophiles; responses varied widely for the individual materials. Although bioleaching had little effect on the preg robbing characteristics of the carbonaceous gold ores, cyanidation of the bioleached residues yielded higher gold recoveries than cyanidation of the native ore. By combining bioleaching with abiotic processes designed to inhibit preg robbing, gold recoveries of 83-98% were obtained from carbonaceous ores yielding 10-50% gold recovery by direct cyanidation.

"After nearly four decades of decline, the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP, or black lung) in the United States has been on the rise since the mid-1990s (Laney et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011; Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016). Particularly alarming is the number of cases of rapidly progressive disease such as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016; Laney et al., 2017). A recent study by Laney et al. (2017) observed 192 U.S. coal miners participating in the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) who had been diagnosed with PMF since 2000. Of the 163 (85 percent) that had a normal radiograph on file to use as a baseline, 27 (17 percent) of these individuals had progressed from a normal radiograph to PMF diagnosis in less than 10 years. Moreover, 162 (84 percent) of the individuals in that study worked in Kentucky, West Virginia or Virginia, and 169 (88 percent) had only ever mined underground. Blackley et al. (2016) also reported on a group of 60 PMF cases that were discovered by a single black lung clinic in eastern Kentucky. Since seeking care at such clinics and participation in the CWHSP are voluntary, and could be influenced by a number of factors, there has been some concern that these reports may overestimate the degree of resurgence in severe disease (i.e., versus disease that was previously under-reported). Even so, they highlight a critical need to better understand the cause(s) of disease development and progression — such that effective interventions can be devised.The notable uptick in CWP and PMF rates among miners in central Appalachia has led to this region being called a hot spot for disease (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2017). While the geographic clustering has been well documented (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Wade et al., 2011; Wang et al., 2013), the root cause is still unknown. Leading hypotheses have focused on the relative amount of rock being cut along with coal in many central Appalachian mines, as there has been a tendency to mine increasingly thinner coal seams over the past couple of decades (Laney et al., 2010; Schatzel, 2009). This shift has likely been accompanied by changes in specific dust exposure factors, such as increased abundance of particularly harmful dust constituents (e.g., silica or silicates) or increased frequency of harmful exposures (e.g., due to work in more risky environments) (Pollock et al., 2010; Blackley et al., 2016; Cohen et al., 2016; Douglas et al., 1986)."

The treatment of concentrates for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials has been developed at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. Historically, conventional pyrometallurgical methods have been used for to recover values from refractory precious metal materials. However, enhanced environmental awareness has worked to constrain typical refractory material processing methods. This hinders and limits the ability of established smelting or roasting technologies to fill the needs of new sources of refractory materials. An alternative is to treat refractory precious metal bearing materials by hydro metallurgical techniques. These methods are considered more environmentally appropriate since they do not produce gaseous pollutants like sulfur dioxide. Industrially, Sunshine Mining and Refining Company employs hydrometallurgical technology to process refractory precious metal materials. The Sunshine antimony leach uses a mixture of sulfur and caustic under ambient pressure and boiling conditions. The Sunshine oxidation leach uses a mixture of sulfuric acid and a minimal amount of sodium nitrite under relatively mild oxygen pressure and temperature conditions. These conditions result in a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach. Since hydrometallurgical technologies provide industrially proven processing options for many types of refractory precious metal containing materials, their usage should be considered. Ample work has been conducted to prove the effectiveness of Sunshine refractory processing technologies on various materials. This has included platinum group metal materials, refractory gold concentrates, silver materials and indium materials. In some cases, complete process flowsheets have been designed to recover both base and precious metals from these materials and to treat the generated waste streams in environmentally sound manners.

The occurrence and distribution of organic sulfur in coals may be investigated using electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, and optical petrography. A general relationship exists between macerals and organic sulfur contents in individual coals: sporinite, resinite = micrinite, vitrinite > pseudovitrinite = semifusinite = macrinite > fusinite. With increasing organic sulfur content of a coal, the total range in organic sulfur content between macerals containing high and low organic sulfur contents likewise increases. Furthermore, the organic sulfur content of the vitrinite in most coals equals the organic sulfur content of the coal. For any individual coal, organic sulfur contents of macerals correlate inversely with reflectance-in-oil measurements, but the amount the organic sulfur contents vary between macerals cannot be calculated based solely on the coal's rank. Formation of pyrite following peatification has no effect on organic sulfur contents of surrounding macerals.

In longwall mining, the progressive caving of the roof allows stored energy to dissipate over an extended time. However, in some cases, the roof strata above the longwall panel are unusually strong and do not break with the movement of the working face. Instead, the roof material bridges over the expanse of the longwall, forming an unstable beam. Later, when this beam breaks, the stored energy can release suddenly, causing a seismic event to propagate to surrounding mine workings. The focus of this paper is to estimate the size of beams that form over longwall panels to the seismic energy recorded by the mine. Analytical calculations are used to verify two-dimensional models of longwall roof beams to determine the strain energy and gravitational energy developed, which is then released upon strata failure to surrounding mine workings. Models are developed using RS2 to model the stress, strain, and deflection along the bottom of the longwall roof beam to calculate gravitational and strain energies. Gravitational energy is shown to be the main driving factor in energy release, except for the beams with low heights. Analyses allow the determination of beam characteristics based on seismic data. The analysis is refined using swelling factor to compare various beam drop heights. The models show an increase in seismic magnitude for higher drop heights. However, the actual data provided by the Buchanan mine displays a decrease in seismic magnitude with increasing drop height, indicating that energy is dissipated into the broken gob material as drop height increases.

Harima Works is operating as the zinc and lead simultaneous smelter utilizing the imperial Smelting Process. The smelter commenced its operation in 1966 with designed capacities of 3500 t/M of zinc and 1500 t/M of lead. After that, owing to the results of progressive developments and improvements in operating efficiency and equipments, it has doubled its production figure. This report reviews our recent developments carried out from 1983 to 1985. Firstly, the furnace bottom design was modified for the purpose of reducing carbon consumption ratio. As a result, shaft operating condition has been satisfactory and carbon consumption ratio was improved by 2%, in addition, furnace zinc production was increased by about 8%. Secondly, the oxygen enriched operation at sintering machine was tested from July 1984 to June 1985, in order to increase the sinter productivity, and to solve the capacity imbalance between sinter plant and ISF. As the test result, it was found out that sulfur elimination rate was increased by approx 10% with the oxygen enrichment of 500 Nm3/hr.

9.1 INTRODUCTION There are approximately 70,000 abandoned coal mines nation¬wide, which is about 35 times the number of underground coal mines presently operating. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that there are over 8 million acres of undermined land due to the extraction of coal, metals, and nonmetals. Subsidence has affected more than 2 million acres, and more than 99% of the subsidence is related to underground coal mining. There is reason to believe that some of the remaining 6 million acres of the undermined land have a high potential to subside. The expansion of housing, highways, commercial structures, and other facilities has required the use of many areas that are underlain by abandoned coal mines, and this growth will continue. Many subsidence problems are derived from the collapse of aban¬doned underground coal mines. There are numerous abandoned mine workings in the anthracite fields of northeastern Pennsylva¬nia, in the Appalachian bituminous fields, the Illinois Basin, the Rock Springs, Wyoming area, and other areas of the United States (Gray et al., 1976). Various room and pillar patterns of mining have been used in the dipping anthracite seams and the nearly flat-lying bituminous seams with considerable variation in the per¬centage of coal extracted. The progressive deterioration of pillars, mine floors, and mine roofs after long exposure to air and water may later result in the collapse of strata over the mine entries, the crushing of the remaining coal pillars, or the bearing failure of the mine floor beneath the coal pillars. Subsidence then results as the collapse reaches the ground surface in the form of differential strains, depressions, cracking of the ground, and sinkhole devel¬opment. Subsidence over active longwall mines, which occurs concurrently with mining or is completed within a short period following coal extraction, has been studied extensively over the past decade. On the other hand, subsidence over abandoned coal mines receives little attention by the researchers, mainly because it is difficult to predict and takes place decades after mining has ceased. The techniques of investigating the subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are similar to those employed for active mines except that at the outset, it is necessary to determine whether or not the subsidence events are mining-related (Chugh et al., 1986; Cummings and Singh, 1986; Peng and Hsiung, 1986). This calls for the identification and confirmation of abandoned mine workings under or near the affected surface structures. Gen¬erally old mine maps, if available, are acquired, the surface bore¬holes are drilled for confirmation of the accuracy of the mine maps and determination of the potential for continued subsidence. Sub¬sidence monuments are established and periodic surveys con¬ducted to determine the amount and trends of surface movement in and around the affected surface structures; surface boreholes are used to investigate the integrity of the underground structures (i.e., roof, coal pillars, and floor) by TV camera. They are also used for monitoring the vertical and horizontal movements of the subsur¬face strata by Sondex (FPBX) and inclinometer (PFBI), respec¬tively, for determining the continuity of the subsidence events. Tape extensometers, crackmeters, etc., are used to monitor the development trends of major cracks in the structures or on the ground. These data are used to identify the causes of the subsidence events. Finally, abatement methods are selected to stabilize the structures. It must be noted that most subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are reported after the fact, and investiga¬tions are begun some time after reporting, that the subsequent measured movements are generally much smaller than that at¬tained in the active mines, and that due to lack of knowledge about the damage conditions and the exact location of the abandoned mine workings with respect to the affected surface structures, the precise causes of surface subsidence or surface structural damages are in most cases very difficult to identify. 9.2 TYPES OF SURFACE SUBSIDENCE According to Gray et al. (1977), after examining 354 incidents of subsidence above abandoned mines in the Pittsburgh metropol¬itan area, the subsidence features have a mean diameter (i.e. the average of long and short dimensions) from less than 1 ft to 1600 ft, with 84% less than or equal to 15 ft; the subsidence features have a depth ranging from less than 1 ft to 48 ft, with 89% less than 25 ft; 66% of the subsidence features are deeper than they are broad. Nearly 59% of the subsidence features occur with overbur¬den less than 50 ft thick and 81% less than 100 ft thick. No subsidence features occur with overburden thicker than 450 ft (Fig. 9.1). Occurrence of subsidence incidents varies from imme¬diately to more than 100 years after mining (Fig. 9.2). In analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chim¬ney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range, Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) examined historical aerial photographs on 4- to 14-year intervals between 1937 and 1967 and found that the majority of observable surface subsidence features occurred within 30 to 40 years after mining. According to Gray et al. (1977), the most prevalent subsi¬dence features over abandoned mined land are sinkholes, with depths of more than 3 ft, and troughs or sags, usually less than 3 ft deep. Sinkholes are steep-sided pits, while troughs are shallow depressions much wider in area than sinkholes. A. SINKHOLE SUBSIDENCE A sinkhole is caused by the collapse of a mine roof that works its way upward. If it is not arrested during the process it will eventually reach the surface and emerge as a sinkhole. The process is governed by the thickness and character of the overburden, the width and height of the mine openings. Sinkholes are usually 3 to 20 ft deep and may be 2 to 40 ft in diameter, although most are fewer than 16 ft across (Gray et al., 1977; DuMontelle and Bauer, 1983). Newly formed sinkholes have steep sides with straight or bell-shaped walls. At times, they appear to be conical in profile with the apex upward. If the topsoil collapses, the top portion will widen to form an hour-glass shape. Sinkhole subsidence usually occurs over abandoned mines less than 165 ft deep (Hunt, 1979). Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) found that chimney sink¬holes are likely to occur when the ratio of overburden thickness to mining height (h/m) is less than 4 to 5. When h/m is between 5 and 10 to 11, the potential occurrence of chimney sinkholes decreases rapidly. When h/m is more than 10 to 11, less than 10% of the mine openings that collapse will induce sinkholes on the surface.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) is leading an effort to develop the next generation of self-escape breathing apparatus for egress from confined spaces in emergency scenarios. A backpack style closed-circuit mine escape respirator design was one configuration explored as part of the research imperative directed by the 2006 MINER Act. Stakeholder feedback from MSHA and at the NIOSH Breathing Air Supply Partnership Meeting indicated a smaller belt worn unit that does not sacrifice performance is desirable. This paper outlines some further technology advancements that may be investigated toward developing such a small-sized respirator. Technologies being considered are novel chemicals for improved carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption and oxygen (O2) production, eliminating a dedicated CO2 scrubber by incorporating its function in the spaces of the respirator’s breathing loop and storing O2 in a liquid form with long standby capabilities. When these technologies are applied to a future design, there is the possibility of having an escape respirator that can be belt worn and capable of being certified to 42 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 84 standards, including sub-part O for escape purposes including mine escape. BACKGROUND NIOSH NPPTL has a Research and Development effort to provide mine workers with state-of-the-art breathing air technologies to comprehensively support initial and continued self-escape, refuge alternatives, and rescue needs, resulting from mine emergencies. As part of this R&D effort, NIOSH invested in the development of a next-generation closed-circuit mine escape respirator (CCMER) which would be compliant with NIOSH’s respirator standard requirements, 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 84, including sub-part O. The design features of the CCMER also address the MINER Act’s requirements for transitioning between devices without the need for doffing the initially donned device. It would also allow for improved protection when using voice communications with a donned device ."

Refractory gold concentrates often contain submicroscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulfide minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically by oxidative processes, such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pretreatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulfides to elemental sulfur, sulfur dioxide gas or sulfate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as downstream operating costs. Iron sulfide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulfuric acid solution that is gener-ated from oxidation of the sulfides. This dissolution liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulfide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulfate, but this compound is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulfate, which then hydrolyzes and reprecipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200°C), the formation of hematite is favored. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200°C), the formation of basic iron sulfate is favored. If the ore or the leach solution contains significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favored. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulfate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulfates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulfate: the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.
