In several investigations the correlation has been studied between the fuel consumption and the reducibility of the charged material in the zone of indirect reduction in the blast furnace (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). It has been found that increased reducibility allows greater gas utilization which accordingly lowers the fuel consumption. In direct reduction units this relation has not yet been fully established partly owing to the lack of accurate test methods and experience with different materials as regards reducibility. However, since the production rate in a direct reduction unit is closely related to the time required to reach high degrees of reduction, the reducibility must be regarded as one of the most important properties of the material.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

The U.S. Geological Survey has for many years been flying and compiling aeromagnetic surveys. The aim is complete coverage of the United States, about half of which is presently done. Colored aeromagnetic maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 are published as the states are completed; Minnesota and Colorado have been published. Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Utah, Maryland and Virginia are presently being processed. Some of the most spectacular data collected to date is from the Piedmont of the Eastern United States. I am going to discuss a preliminary aeromagnetic map of the Piedmont region between New York and North Carolina, where coverage is nearly complete. This map has been compiled from many surveys. Flight spacing over Piedmont rocks is 1/4 to 1 mile with flight elevation of 500 feet above ground. The spacing over the Virginia Coastal Plain and Valley and Ridge regions is wider at 2 - 3 miles. Much of the data in Virginia has been produced by the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources. The map is colored on a spectral color scheme with red for the higher intensities and violet the low intensities. Each color represents a 100 gamma interval. Some of the highest intensities are beyond the range of the 13 colors - these are left white. It is necessary, of course, to remove first, the Earth's main magnetic field. The Geological Survey uses the International Geomagnetic Reference Field or IGRF (Fabiano and Peddie, 1969). The use of color in aeromagnetic maps is not new, but then not common. We have found that colored aeromagnetic contour maps are more useful by far than the uncolored versions because they allow the user to instantly compare intensities in widely separated areas and visualize long wavelength anomalies even when numerous short wavelength anomalies' are superimposed. One tends to see only steep gradients on uncolored aeromagnetic maps, the broad anomalies being quite invisible. We feel that colored maps take the place of various mathematically derived maps such as second derivative or averaged maps.

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) has became an attractive alternative technology to be a new process to recover metal, of which can be substitute the existing Leaching/Solvent extraction processes. Solvent extraction of metallic ions is a technically important and also well-established process that is used in the chemical and hydrometallurgical industries.1 Solvent extraction techniques use the chelation of metallic ions dissolved in liquid solution with organic ligands. Conventional solvent-extraction technique needs large amount of organic solvents and often creates environmental problems.2 More environment-friendly technology is needed nowadays, and there have been increasing attentions to extract metal ions by SFE. CO2 becomes one of the most notable alternative organic solvents due to its nonflammable, nontoxic, nonpolluting, and relatively inexpensive properties with its moderate critical point (73.8 bar, 31.06 °C). Many works have been reported in metal extraction under the supercritical CO2 (scCO2) solvent.3-5 In this study, to recover cobalt from wastes especially from spent lithium ion battery scrap, we selected two ligands ? Cyanex 272 and DEA (diethylamine) for the metal extraction in scCO2. Cyanex 272 is a commercially available extractant along with its series, Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302. Smart and coauthors measured the metal extracting abilities of these three extractants, and found that Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302 extracted metal ions much better than Cyanex 272 in the scCO2 solvent.10 The pH of water contacted with high pressure CO2 (70-200 bar, 25-70 oC) is about 2.8-2.95 based on the calculation and the measurement.6-7 Cyanex 272 is known to be less effective as a metal extractant in this low pH environment compared with other Cyanex series. However, when DEA is added to metal extraction reaction with Cyanex-272, DEA works as a strong base to Cyanex 272 converting Cyanex 272 to a deprotonated form (Figure 1), which results in an easy formation of metal complex and the enhanced extraction rate of metal ion.8 Therefore, the purpose of this paper is the metal extraction from spent lithium ion battery waste using scCO2 with Cyanex 272 and DEA.

The MBS Solvent Extraction System utilises a unique design of mixer- settler having very high capacity per unit area and great flexibility. The development of the mixer-settler is traced through its various stages wherein the independence of mixing and pumping, reduction in settler area requirements and simplicity of plant layout were achieved. The laboratory, pilot plant and full scale tests contributing to the development of the machine are described. The existing KREBS SX plants in Europe and Africa are described as well as the plants presently under design. Results of recent testwork are also given.

This study seeks to define the mechanism of oxyanion sorption onto surfactant-modified zeolites. Zeolites which have been treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) surfactant to produce a hydrophobic surface are capable of sorbing both organic compounds as well as oxyanions such as chromate, selenate, and sulfate. Simple ion exchange and charge-balancing mechanisms do not fully explain this unusual phenomenon. The sorption of HDTMA surfactant appears to be partly ion exchange and partly sorption to non-ion-exchangeable sites. Sorption of chromate is a simple exchange mechanism with bromide, which co-adsorbs with HDTMA to form a surface precipitate. Information from this study will be used to design on-site and in situ treatment systems for contaminated water, such as filter beds and permeable barriers.

In this study, the Reddy-Blander model was applied to predict the sulfide capacity (CS) values of FeOx-CaO-SiO2, FeOx-MnOx-SiO2 and FeO-MgO-SiO2 ternary slags, which were experimentally studied in the literature within the temperatures between 1,673 and 1,923 K. As expected, sulfide capacity values of the slags increased with increasing temperature and decreased with increasing acidic content. The model was found to be in agree-ment for all slag systems at the temperature range of 1,773-1,923 K. However, a disagreement occurred when the basic content was relatively high, at 1,673 K for FeOx-CaO-SiO2 and FeO-MnOx-SiO2 slags. The effect on the CS of high amounts of Fe+3 and Mn+3 in the slags is discussed.

The generation and transportation of the airborne dust are mainly governed by the velocity and the movement pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face. Generally speaking, the higher the air velocity, the more the airborne dust will be generated and the longer the period of the dust of certain size will be carried away from the source. In order to effectively prevent the production and the spread of the airborne dust, The airborne dust concentration distribution in the longwall face must be known in advance. Before the dust concentration distribution can he predicted theoretically with confidence, the air velocity distribution pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face area must be determined first. However, the complicated, time-dependent and unpredictable mining conditions along and around the face area make the theoretical studies of the problem rather difficult. For instance, one of the factors commonly affecting the air velocity distribution at the longwall face is the air leakage, either into or from the gob area. The leakage quantity and the location of occurrence differ from mine to mine, face to face, and time to time. They depend not only on the compactness of the caved roof fragments in the gob, but also on the degree of obstructions in the working space and in the return entry. Another obstacle to the theoretical studies about the velocity distrbution is the complicated boundary conditions of the ventilated spnce which is very difficult to represent accurately in mathematical forms. In this paper, the air velocity distributions measured in four longwall faces are presented. A statistical model for each longwall face is also derived for prediction of air velocity distribution in the longwall face.

Water movement and water chemistry were monitored in the unsaturated zone at two sites in fluvial tailings deposits along the Arkansas River near Leadville, Colorado. One of the sites was remediated by the incorporation of lime and biosolids into the soil. Preliminary results, based on data collected during the 11 months following remediation, indicate that differences between the two sites can largely be attributed to heterogeneity of the deposits. Remediation has increased the alkalinity in the upper soil zone, but as of yet, there is no indication that soils at depths greater than 30 cm have been affected.

BOB FALCONER: Our next topic leader is Scott Lawson. Scott is manager of human resources for Independence Mining Company, Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company, Victor, Colorado. Scott has 25 years of human resources management experience in the mining industry, surface and underground, precious and base metals. His topic this morning is "It's the Employee That Counts." SCOTT LAWSON: When reviewing the topic of productivity in a union versus nonunion workplace, we need to look at who, and not what, can make the difference in ensuring the success of a production-oriented operation. It's not explicitly whether the property is unionized or not, but whether the employee team (including the "management group") is working together to accomplish common, shared, and meaningful goals. The bottom line is what action or actions can be taken to develop trust and to strengthen working relationships that challenge and compel employees to willingly share their particular areas of expertise. I want to share a real-life experience that happened to me during the summer of 1961. Perhaps some of you will be able to relate to the following story. I was an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, ready for my first true work adventure. I found summer employment for myself and two friends with the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio. Our jobs were as laborers, laying ties and rails, and unloading ballast. We made $2.62 an hour. We were fat cats! My friends and I took on the job with a great deal of vigor, to the dismay of our fellow workers. These workers were unionized by the Railway Workers, which I believe were affiliated with the Teamsters. Talk about being naive, we wrote the book in 1961. When we took the jobs, we did not realize the employees were represented by a union, even though we didn't think they worked too hard. Within our first two weeks of work, we established new daily records for laying virtually twice as many ties as had been standard, and we nearly tripled production by the end of our hall of fame railroad careers. We even took naively to the next level by lining up the ties for our afternoon work shift during our lunch break. In 1961, we thought we were the Mantle, Maris, and Colavito of tie laying. For the younger set in the audience, we would have felt like the McGwire, Griffey Jr., and "The Big Hurt" Thomas of tie laying. A section of the union contract allowed for a 60-day probationary period during which the employee was evaluated and also exempt from joining the union. Cominco Snip is a 60: 40 joint venture of Cominco Ltd. and Prime Resources Group Inc. Cominco manages the operation. The mine site is located in a narrow mountain valley where Bronson Creek enters the Iskut River in Northwestern British Columbia. Access is by air only to the company's 1,500 meter airstrip. Milling at a designed feed rate of 300 tpd began on schedule in January 1991. Tonnage and gold production in the form of bullion bars from the gravity circuit and gold bearing float concentrate have exceeded design forecast. This presentation will examine many of the factors that influenced the final plant design inclusive of exploration findings, bench scale and pilot plant test results, environmental and social considerations, capital and projected operating costs and product transportation alternatives such as the operation's Hovercraft.

The separation process called solvent sublation for the removal of two hydrophobic compounds (penta-and tri-chlorophenols) from the aqueous phase is discussed. A steady state mathematical model for the process is discussed. The process was conducted in a continuous countercurrent mode. The underlying mechanisms, theory and experimental details on the effects of process variables on removal efficiency are reported.

Henderson Mine personnel have more than 20 years experience and have placed more than 400,000 m3 (520,000 cu yd) of shotcrete and concrete. Over the last 20 years, the mine has used a variety of equipment to place concrete, wet shotcrete and dry shotcrete and is constantly trying to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Recently, the mine received a state-of-the-art wet shotcrete placer. The batch plant was automated, and a mobile concrete-form jumbo was fabricated. The mine will also receive a new concrete transport truck. Henderson’s background The Henderson Mine is owned by Climax Molybdenum Co., a unit of Amax, Inc. It is an underground, primary molybdenum producer near Empire, CO. The mill is located between Silverthome and Kremmling, CO and is connected to the mine by 16 km (10 miles) of underground and 8 km (5 miles) of surface track. Except for the ore haulage system which is powered by overhead trolley, all mobile equipment is rubber-tired and diesel-powered.

This subject was introduced last April in a paper presented in Birmingham, Alabama, by James E. Elkin, General Superintendent of Duquesne's Coal Department. This paper will cover some of the same data and in addition it will update and further describe our experience. Our Portal No. 3 was started in June 1965 with battery tractor-trailer face haulage. This mine is operating in the Sewickley seam in Dunkard Township, Greene County, in Southwestern Pennsylvania as shown on Fig. 1. The Warwick group of mines fronts on the Monongahela River and extends westward for some ten miles as shown on Fig. 2.

During 1980-2000, the Florida Phosphate industry will deplete its Central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the ?so-called? Southern Florida Reserve areas. These new mines will require new mining, beneficiation and tailings disposal technologies in that the southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the Central Florida deposits furthermore, government regulations will necessitate the development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.

Not everyone understands the concept of mineral royalty. Mineral royalty is a fee paid to a landowner by someone who extracts a mineral commodity from the owners property. The royalty contract between the lessor and lessee contains clauses and conditions that are significant to both parties, e.g., annual m1n1mum, escalation factor, duration of the lease, reclamation and assignability. Comparison of royalty rates requires knowledge of many conditions that influence the value of a given deposit. People in several different professions benefit from shared royalty information.

The coal industry is ever changing and complex. This article discusses some problems that must be faced and their projected economic effects. Coal's dominant market is for electric power generation. While growth rates in the 1980s will be nominal compared to historic growth rates, such growth will be substantial in absolute terms because it comes from a very large base. Higher growth is expected in the 1990s. History When looking toward the future, an examination of the past is helpful. Figures 1 and 2 present production and consumption statistics (expressed in short tons) on bituminous coal and lignite in the US from 1945 onward. After an all-time peak of 572 Mt (631 million st) in 1947, total production dropped to 356 Mt (392 million st) in 1954. Sustained growth in total production did not begin until the 1960s. Coal production from under-ground mines declined from more than 400 Mt (440 million st) in 1947 to about 295 Mt (325 million st) during 1965 to 1970. A further decline ensued until a strike in 1978 reduced production to only 218 Mt (240 million st). Underground mines produced 283 Mt (312 million st) in 1983. Coal production from surface mines has increased steadily since the early 1960s. While some of this increase has come from mines east of the Mississippi River, most has resulted from surface mines developed in the West. Production from surface mines west of the Mississippi River was 224 Mt (247 million st) in 1982. Total coal production from under-ground and surface mines, other than Western surface mines, continues to approximate levels of 40 years ago. In spite of several wage increases, increasing productivity in surface and underground mines enabled the coal industry to hold the average value f.o.b. mine to about $5.50/t ($5 per st) from the end of World War II to 1969. Under-ground mine productivity peaked at more than 13.5 t (15 st) per man-day in 1969. As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.

The Ekati process plant flowsheet features the common steps in diamond recovery plant design. Primary treatment and concentration is by crushing, scrubbing, high-pressure grinding rolls and heavy medium separation (Fig. 1). Secondary concentration is by an attrition mill; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation and X-ray sorting (Fig. 2). All of these are performed on site, although final sorting of the diamonds into commercial categories will be carried out elsewhere. The initial throughput rate is 9 kt/d (9,900 stpd), increasing to 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) during the first 10 years of operation. A range of ore characteristics will be encountered that will effect the plant operating conditions during the life of the mine. The adopted design envelope is based on these expected variations. The design is based on the use of large-scale equipment, incorporating the latest and most efficient technology available. Where proven technology exists, no attempt was made to reinvent the wheel. However, where recently developed technology offers a significant advantage, this has been incorporated into the design. The Ekati run-of-mine (ROM) and coarse ore handling facilities are unheated, to take advantage of the better handling characteristics of the frozen ore in winter. The stockpile reclaim features an MMD mineral sizer (a toothed roll crusher) to minimize the problems of handling thawed, sticky kimberlite in the summer and break frozen lumps in the winter. All processing downstream from primary crushing and the coarse ore stockpile is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building. Personnel involvement in the process is mini¬mized by using a Modicon Quantum series PLC with human-machine-interfaces (HMI) running Wonder-ware software on dedicated personal computers.
