The Millenbach copper-zinc orebody is an ideal Canadian example of a stratabound base metal deposit in volcanic rocks. The mine, operated by Lake Dufault Divison, Falconbridge Copper Ltd. is located five miles north of the city of Noranda in northwestern Quebec. The deposit occurs within an Archean volcanic sequence which forms part of regional acidic volcanic center within the Abitibi greenstone belt. Preproduction ore reserves totalled 2,075,000 tons grading 3.5% copper, 3.6% zinc, 1.1 ounces per ton silver, and 0.02 ounces per ton gold. Stratabound lenses of massive sulphides together with underlying stringer sulphides are closely associated with a dome of quartz-feldspar porphyritic rhyolite approximately 3000 feet below surface. The paper describes the presently known geology of the deposit and includes documentation of sulphide mineralogy and textures as well as sulphide/ host rock relationships. The stratigraphy, petrography and chemistry of the volcanic host rocks are described with emphasis on the alteration intimately associated with the sulphide bodies. Although the volcanic stratigraphy is complex within the mine area, the presence of only low-grade metamorphism and the relative lack of structural deformation allow detailed interpretation of geological history. Presently recognized evidence strongly suggests that the sulphides were deposited at and near sea-floor, by hydrothermal solutions. The dome of porphyritic rhyolite appears to have been the most significant factor controlling sulphide localization.

This paper is intended to provide information for one to be able to determine the slurry system head curve for pump applications. The slurry characteristics are the basis for what the size, material of construction, and critical carrying velocity of the pipe will be. The system head curve is adjusted by use of the pipe friction coefficient factor and slurry derate factors. An example using multi-staging of slurry pump curves is presented to compare the wear life relationship of pump parts for a tailing pipeline system head curve.

"We could blow that damned fort out of existence if we could run a mine shaft under it!," claimed one Union soldier eyeing Bobby Lee's Petersburg defense line protecting Richmond and Jeff Davis. Puncture the line, take the hill behind, and the Confederate capital would celebrate Yankee jubilee, 1864. That was June. At 4:15 am, July 30, mine boss Henry Reese, sergeant, 48th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, gingerly entered the mine, dark and muddy. Something had gone wrong. The mine, set to go off at 3:30, hadn't exploded. It had to be checked. The main mine gallery, 1.5 m high x 1.4 m wide (5 x 4 ft) narrowing at the top to 0.6 m (2 ft), forced Reese into a tuck run. Some¬where up there in that 155 m (511 ft) stretch running 6 m (20 ft) under the rebel works, moisture may have doused the charge. Or maybe a fuse splice went awry. Or maybe there was live fire steaming like a locomo¬tive towards 3.6 t (4 st) of black powder. Perhaps now Reese wished this sprint was shorter. For the mine boasted a record break¬ing distance in military annals. Lieut. Col. Henry Pleasants Credit goes to Lieut. Col. Henry Pleas¬ants, commander of the 48th, who overheard the soldier's claim for what a mine could do. In peacetime, Pleasants had been a railroad engineer working on the Sand Patch Tunnel. He later switched to mining, working for the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. He even married the daughter of the editor of The Miners Journal. Grieving over his wife's early death, Pleasants plunged into the ven¬ture of war. This Union officer took the mine idea to the brass. Headquarters was less than enthu¬siastic. "The chief engineer of the Army and the rest of the regular Army wiseacres said it was not feasible," Pleasants wrote to his uncle. The pros scoffed, ticking off a list of horribles: No mine has ever gone that far, men will suffocate and be crushed, the rebs will countermine, the men will be trapped. Still, Pleasants eked out a signal to proceed. In the meantime, the miners of the 48th had commenced to dig anyway. It was like the 48th to proceed against the odds. The 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers The 48th had been recruited from Penn¬sylvania's Schuylkill County, anthracite coal mining country. The mines had been torn with strife over wages. Strikes and rioting were prevalent. Murder was not unknown. This "Buckshot" resistance centered in Pottsville, PA. It forced the governor to call in troops. Coal was in high demand to run the war machine. Pennsylvania operators worried that a military draft would stir up violence, closing the mines altogether and further shift¬ing business to emerging Illinois mines. Men lit out for the western gold fields in the tens of thousands. Secret societies bred in the mining camps invited draft agents to dance at the end of a rope. Jobs threatened by cheap, victorious South¬ern labor were one warning intended to get immigrant miners interested in the war. Operators gave miners time off to help de¬fend Philadelphia during Lee's thrust to Gettysburg. Even so, the draft spawned new violence and troop intercession. Soldiers were not welcome. The dust had barely settled when into this Pennsylvania "minefield" marched the 48th on a recruitment drive. The 48th had been in Lexington, KY on guard duty. When it came time for the regiment to pull out, the townspeople had prevailed upon authorities to extend the regiment's stay. Finally ordered to move out, the 48th was feted by a hanky-waving, tear-dropping send-off to the lyrical lament Auld Lang Syne. And Kentucky fancied itself to be rebel. Striding smartly into the Pennsylvania coalfields, the 48th attracted 400 recruits and marched off under regimental colors specially made by the proud citizens of none other than Pottsville, PA.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. The Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) has been an advocate for the U.S. mining industry since 1895. For several decades, the organization has represented mining members located mostly in the Northwest and some southwestern Canadian provinces. Today, though, the NWMA?s membership is located in 42 states and seven provinces and has become a national voice for the mining industry. So, during the association?s 119th and final meeting as the NWMA, a name change was announced. The organization is now called the American Exploration and Mining Association (AEMA). But that?s not all that has changed, according to the association. The new name reflects more closely the diversity and location of the AEMA?s membership. It will still be an advocate for the mining industry, dealing with land, environmental and community issues on state and federal levels. The conference, held in December 2013 in Reno, NV, attracted about 2,500 attendees. And the accompanying exhibit included 230 equipment and service suppliers in 246 booths. Technical programming ran the gamut of mining industry issues and technologies, including surface and underground mining; high technology systems and automation in mining, metallurgy and exploration; along with social issues, finance and safety. The following is a sample of some of the sessions.

INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). In the northwestern part of the Netherlands lies the deepest solution salt mine in the world. The company operating the mine is Frisia Zout bv (part of the K+S group). Extracting the NaCl from caverns at a depth of nearly 3000 m has a lot of challenges. Continuously monitoring, among others, the flows, pressures and salt concentrations is necessary to safely and economically mine the salt. A system has been set up at Frisia to be able to monitor the data from a distance. Data has been put in graphs to monitor the trends daily. All gauges are also continuously monitored to maintain accuracy. With this system a better understanding of the mining process has been made and has led to many optimizations.

Abstract. Dynamic experiments were performed in a continuous open-circuit 40x40 cm ball mill using a pseudo-random binary sequence of the feed rate and measuring the variations of the discharge particle-size distribution. The impulse response is calculated by a cross-correlation technique. Then a model involving a discrete transfer function and a time-series stochastic equation is calibrated using maximum likelihood methods. Based on this empirical model. a minimum variance controller with constrained input is designed and its performances are compared. by simulation, to the performances of a conventional PID regulator.

Analytical costs are a major part of exploration programs in developing nations which may lack adequate laboratories. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a variant of atomic emission spectroscopy, can reduce exploration analytical costs and can provide the analytical results in <1 minute. CPI is now marketing battery-powered, backpack mounted analyzers, using LIBS to analyze for many elements of interest to the explorationist. LIBS is well suited to the analysis of elements in industrial minerals. Limits of detection in ppm for some of these are: Li-1, Be-2, Na-100, B-33, Sr-10, Ba-300, Cs-1, K-500, Fe-500, Mg-500, and Ti-500.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full scale model mine using a Joy 12 CM 10-AA continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters included: mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback and combinations of scrubber, directional sprays or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either directional or symmetrical water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 6 m (20-ft) blowing results.

This paper discusses design and construction aspects of the tunnel, shaft and station for the Weehawken Tunnel and Bergen line Avenue Station. The project consists of a 1,269 m (4,156 ft) long existing railroad tunnel, which will be enlarged and equipped with a two-track light rail system. The project also includes construction of a deep underground station, with a large shaft connecting the surface station to the below ground station for access and ventilation purposes. Vibration and noise from blasting is a critical community issue and blasting adjacent to two 230-kV duct banks located in the tunnel invert required special blasting procedures.

Since the introduction of shield supports in 1975, safety and production in U.S. longwall faces have improved considerably. Many faces had a daily production of up to 8,000-10,000 tons and productivity reached 600 tons per man-shift. But a longwall face requires expensive equipment which slows down the growth rate of the percentage of longwall production. Among the equipment cost the shield support accounts for 50-60%, a very large proportion. Therefore, it will have a large impact on the growth of longwall mining in the U.S. to reduce the support cost (1).

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high loss-of-ignition (LOI)fly ash. Using froth flotation to achieve selective separations requires long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash — low LOI ash and a high-carbon product suit-able for reburning or further upgrading.

Environmental awareness has become a paramount consideration in the issue of planning and licensing arrangements for the disposal of wastes associated with mining operations. In this con- text the disposal of liquid tailings is a difficult and controversial problem with regard to environmental surface disposal. The paper outlines the use of Information Systems for decision support in the safe and environmental disposal of liquid tailings linked to conventional coarse refuse operations. This offers both an economic and an aesthetic approach to a historical perception of waste tipping in the underground coal extraction industry. The paper will demonstrate a prototype system that incorporates multimedia facilities which include data such as; voice comments, site photography, site plans and fluid flow circuits.

White Pine Copper Company operates a mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan using a modified room-and-pillar system for extracting ore.1 Mine production averages 15, 500 tons per day. The terrain is predominantly level and the depth of cover varies from 500 to 800 feet over the present workings with depth increasing as mining progresses down the dip. The deposit is situated on a low angle plunging, anticlinal structure composed of sedimentary beds. Local terminology for the stratigraphic units which contain the ore horizons, named in ascending order, is as follows: lower sandstone, parting shale, upper sandstone and upper shale. The ore zones of copper enrichment are, contained in the parting and upper shales. The parting shale will vary; from 6. 5 to 9.0 feet thick; the upper sandstone from 2 to 10 feet; and the upper shale from 1. 5 to 6. 5 feet. Two variation of the room-and-pillar system are used to extract the ore depending on grade and local ground conditions. One system is called the parting shale method and recovers the parting shale only. This system requires a mining height of 8 1/2 feet to accommodate large-scale, high-capacity equipment and this working height is obtained by removing approximately 1 to 2 feet of the barren lower sandstone with the ore. Under the second system, locally termed full column, the mining height is about 14-1/2 feet and this system removes the parting shale, the upper sandstone and the lower mineralized zone, approximately 1-1/2 feet, of the upper shale at which point it is possible to maintain a competent back (Fig. 1).1

Sludge obtained during production of magnesium (Mg) metal from electrolyzing of molten MgCl2 contains entrapped magnesium particles. The sludge material containing the magnesium particles is a friable, continuous matrix of frozen salt mixture which may also contain some oxides and impurities. A dry process was developed for recovery of magnesium metal from the sludge, utilizing minerals beneficiation unit operations. The steps included selective comminution, screening, attritioning and tabling. Recovery of the high grade (+90 percent) metal was in the 70 percent range. The process is being commercially used in the U.S. The novel process was also successfully applied to a magnesium-alloy for recovery of metal from the sludges.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A146, Tunnels from 5th/HILL Station to 7th/Flower Station, involves tunnel construction through the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The alignment of the tunnels passes beneath twelve buildings, ranging from a 3-story below grade parking structure to numerous 12 to 14 story buildings. The soil along the alignment is alluvium, consisting of silts and clays, clean sands and gravels located above the ground water table. Because of unstable ground conditions, which led to excessive ground losses in several instances, and because of the potential for excessive building settlements, it became necessary to design and perform a program of chemical grouting. The chemical grouting program was designed such that tunneling could proceed on a one shift per day basis, with chemical grounting being performed on the remaining two shifts. Each day 21,000 to 31,000 liters of sodium silicate grout were injected through sleeveport grout pipes installed 18 m deep through the tunnel face. Tunnel advance rates of 12 m per day, 60 m per week, under full chemical grout cover were achieved. The chemical grouting program virtually eliminated both ground loss and settlement and permitted successful excavation of the tunnels. A low-grade copper-nickel deposit, with an estimated size of 4.6 billion tonnes and with average analyses of 0.6% copper, 0.2% nickel, occurs in northeastern Minnesota. In addition to copper, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals, the Duluth gabbro contains magnetite, ilmenite, olivine, plagioclase and biotite. It is estimated that the flotation tailings that would be produced by a concentrator of optimal size to sustain a smelter would amount to 20 million t per year. The flotation tailings, having already been ground, warrant a closer examination for the recovery and utilization of potential by-products. The residual sulfide minerals and fibrous minerals may also be isolated and treated separately for useful purposes or for disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Two flowsheets were developed; one involving preconcentration by low- and high-intensity magnetic separation and another involving preconcentration by gravity concentration. The concentration methods for recovering and purifying individual by-product minerals were investigated. From their chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics, the potential areas of application and marketabilities of each product fraction were surveyed.
