Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

When tunneling through karstic terrain, diverse and complex karst structures are to be expected. By means of drilling ahead of the face using drill jumbos, these structures can be detected to such a degree that by applying proper support measures both open karst cavities and karst holes surrounded by boulders embedded in soft rock can be mastered without causing any break-outs. Support measures such as spiles ahead of excavation, sealing off cavities, back?lling with sand, etc. have to be planned schematically and adapted to the dimensions and formations of the karst structures on site. An essential requirement for a smooth excavation procedure is the availablility of all necessary tunneling equipment for excavation by drill and blast as well as for excavation of soil, with experienced tunnel engineers being in charge of any adaptions on site.

INTRODUCTION Estimation of capital and operating costs for mines and mills has long been a necessary ingredient of feasibility studies, and though many practitioners have successfully used "rules of thumb" and factor estimating methods for many years, a great deal of work is usually required to prepare an initial estimate and/or to update or revise such an estimate. Development of comprehensive mining and milling cost models during the 1970's by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and by Canadian workers (O'Hara and Mullar) provided the basis for feasibility-level cost estimates, but the numerous equations and the apparent rigor and complexity involved in preparing a project estimate using these models has discouraged many, if not most, potential users. Their acceptance was also hindered by a broad misunderstanding by many engineers in the minerals industries who had little exposure to such procedures, and by a possibly inadequate level of explanation or documentation of the parametric approach to cost estimating. The preliminary nature of most databases, geologic/engineering/ and market, available to the engineer or analyst during the early stages of a mineral project is a universal problem. Basing corporate mega-investment decisions or even individual equipment selection decisions on the usual "SWAG’s has always been a risky practice, but in the current business environment, the "guesstimates" are almost 'verboten', and are certainly becoming antiquated with the advent of both the described models, the ubiquitous microcomputer, and the nearly-ubiquitous hybrid species known as the "computerized engineer". Engineers have almost always sought techniques of cost estimation that can be applied and justified when geologic and engineering information for a mining project is preliminary and incomplete. The answer, in some cases, is the "parametric" approach. Equations, based on actual, past experience are developed to relate capital and operating costs to major physical variables such as the rate of mining or milling, with modifiers for such details as mining method, process characteristics, methods of construction, or types of equipment . Cost Engineering Standards Five major types of fixed capital cost estimates have been defined by the American Association of Cost Engineers : 1. Order-of-Magnitude estimate based on previous cost data and minimal knowledge. usually a "ratio estimate" with no better than +/- 30% accuracy. 2. Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, WY trona district since August 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the amount of relatively expensive development mining and improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning in April 1987. As of June 1988, four shortwall panels had been completed using the advancing tailgate, producing more than 739 kt (815,000 st). This paper discusses the effects of the advancing tailgate on shortwall production, development mining requirements, costs, strata mechanics, and ventilation. Shortwall mining is a hybrid extraction method combining the self-advancing hydraulic roof supports from longwall mining and continuous mining machines (Fig. 1). The technique has been only marginally successful at the majority of the nearly 20 installations worldwide. At present, the face at Tg Soda Ash Inc. is the only shortwall operating in the United States and the only noncoal shortwall in existence. Despite the method's record of limited success, the staff at Tg Soda Ash determined that the conditions in its trona mine were well suited for shortwall mining. The commitment to install a shortwall was made in late 1981 and the first panel commenced in August 1982. Between that time and June 1988, about 3.33 Mt (3.67 million st) of trona have been mined with the system from 15 panels. Annual average productivities have ranged from 818 t/shift (902 st per shift) in 1982 to 1.4 kt/t shift (1591 st per shift) in 1987. Overall, the system has produced an average of 1.3 kt/ shift (1450 st per shift). In April 1987, a method of mining the return air tailgate during shortwall retreat was tested (Fig. 2). The objective was to determine if a return airway could be established and maintained by mining a series of rooms and pillars about 7.6 m (25 ft) past the face support line. The method would allow a barrier pillar to be left between shortwall panels without requiring the mining of a separate return air tailgate.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." Based on our finding that commercial copper chelating solvent extractants such as LIX65N® and LIX63® are excellent collectors for copper minerals, a detailed study was made using several water-soluble chelating agents belonging to the class of aromatic hydroxyoximes and having a gradual structural variation. A basic study of the system salicylaldoxime-tenorite was also carried out. Microflotation tests as a function of concentration of oxime, pH, addition of copper etc., using oxidic copper minerals such as chrysocolla and tenorite, and batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of quartz and oxidic copper minerals were carried out. The studies were aimed at an understanding of the collector function of the hydroxyoximes and of the general flotation behavior in these systems, in addition to studying the structural aspects of oximes vis-a-vis flotation. The results have demonstrated that all of the hydroxyoximes studied here have comparable collector property, and in all cases the oxime was found to be partitioned between the mineral surface and the copper in the bulk aqueous phase in the form of a bulk copper chelate. The occurrence of the latter could be accounted for by the formation in the bulk phase of a chelate between oxime and copper released from the mineral and/or by the detachment of the surface chelate. The role of surface and bulk chelates in flotation is discussed based on the results of partitioning of chelating agent into bulk and surface chelates in the system salicylaldoximetenorite. The effect of substitution of CH2 groups or benzene ring in the chelating agent molecule on its collector property is also discussed, in addition to the finding that only the anti-isomer has the ability to collect.

Extensive phosphate resources occur within the Miocene Hawthorn and Pungo River Formations which have not been considered in the past since they were poorly known and were not available to conventional mining. These resources include 1) deep phosphates that occur below 75 meters of overburden within major sediment basins throughout the southeastern coastal plain, and 2) offshore phosphates that occur on the continental shelf and within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The future potential of these two vast resources will be realized with development of new mining technologies such as hydraulic slurry mining and integrated with advanced technolgy already being utilized in the offshore petroleum industry.

By combining statistical methods with specialized coal technology, novel and widely applicable procedures are developed which are useful for making important decisions based on coal seam structure. By analyzing such properties as ash in visual coal types of seam cross sections and by processing the ash data to 100 gram increments of coal ranging from the top to the bottom of the seam, intraseam comparisons between data populations of samples from a given seam and a reference seam can be made. Moreover, illustrations are presented for estimating the number of drill cores required to purchase a specified level of sampling accuracy together with procedures for determining the probability that different coal scan cross sections are not unlike and by inference are therefore comparable. Such comparisons can be valuable when making important, costly and long prevaling decisions involving coal exploration, mining, preparation and utilization.

To accommodate the new Pier A expansion at BWI airport, a 1.8 m (6.0 ft)diameter stormwater pipe was constructed below active Runway 15R-33L. The jacked tunnel alignment runs east/west below the runway, and the depth the crown was 6.1 m(20 ft). Soil conditions consisted of very loose to medium sand and gravel, with some medium stiff clay and silt. Super Jet Grouting was selected as the ground treatment system, creating large diameter columns. All work was performed from the surface of the runway between the hours of 12 am and 6 am. Monitoring points along the tunnel in the grout zone indicated zero settlement during tunneling. Tunneling operations in front of and beyond the treatment zone experienced significant settlement. Super Jet Grouting in the treatment zone provided a low permeability continuous stable soilcrete that was readily mined while the runway remained in service.

Use of geostatistics to solve mining problems is gaining importance as the cost of developing new mines is increasing and there is a need to mine more marginal deposits. But, until recently, coal companies have shown little or no interest in geostatistics. However, the stringent quality controls on coal burning has led to a surge in interest in improved methods for estimating clean coal characteristics. Until now, most of the geostatistical applications have centered on the problems of estimating in-situ coal characteristics (Sabourin, 1975; Wood, 1976, 1979; Fang and Stark, 1976; Pauncz and Nixon, 1979; and Knudsen et al., 1980). Little work has been done in applying geostatistics to coal washability, except that by Armstrong (1980). Applying geostatistics to coal washability basically means the estimation of cleaned coal characteristics, with the aid of geostatistics. Cleaned coal estimation plays a very important role in overall emission control strategy, as can be seen by the general flow diagram of such a strategy shown in Figure 1. The scope of this paper is limited to one aspect of the overall emission control strategy shown in Figure 1; namely, the prediction of cleaned coal characteristics using geostatistics.

"Separation of different calcium minerals have long been an interesting and challenging problem. In this investigation calcium mineral separation is examined by: microflotation, zeta potential measurement and adsorption, using novel collectors having two functional groups instead of one. In theory, by varying the distance between the functional groups, it could be possible to preferentially target one calcium mineral by matching the spatial distance between the sites on the mineral surface. In this investigation two new surfactants have been tested to estimate their ability to float apatite and/or calcite. Preliminary findings show that an increase in distance between the functional groups favors one mineral over the other, and this might be due to differences in the mineral surface structure. INTRODUCTION Apatite is a strategically important mineral which has both great value for industrial use as a precursor to phosphoric acid; and in the agricultural industry as an important source of phosphorous in fertilizers. This has led both the European Union and the United States to recognize it as an important resource for the future. Currently there is no lack of apatite in the world, but it is important to develop the beneficiation to ensure future supply. A common problem in apatite flotation is the selectivity towards calcite, which it is commonly associated with. Although calcite is an important industrial mineral its abundance makes it not usually worth to extract from apatite ores unless it is easy to separate1,2. Both apatite and calcite are semi soluble minerals with calcium as one of their constituents. The most common way to separate apatite and calcite is to use flotation. A process that involves making the mineral particles to extract from the system hydrophobic by adsorbing a collector on the mineral surface. One way to study collector adsorption on a mineral surface is by zeta potential measurements. The zeta potential is the charge at a slip plane a short distance from the surface. By measuring the zeta potential with and without the presence of collector it is possible to investigate if the collector is present at the surface or not, a change is indicative of collector adsorption. The zeta potential of fluorite, apatite and calcite without collector can be seen in Figure 1. The small difference in zeta potential between apatite and calcite shows the similarity in their surface properties and gives an indication of their separation difficulty. One additional problem with semi soluble minerals is their tendency to slightly dissolve in the pulp and thereby change the ionic composition of the solution. This makes separation and research problematic as the freed ions may readsorb on the mineral surface and interfere with the collector adsorption on the mineral surfaces3–5."

High-G centrifuges from five preparation plants were sampled to determine and quantify the various operating factors affecting performance. The operating factors that were considered include feed rate and percent solids, size of feed material, screen-basket type, hardness of coal and age of the flights. The performance parameters that were measured include product surface moisture, recovery and degradation of the coal. Regression equations with good significance levels were developed.

During blasting, rock breaks and moves but standard grade control practices do not adjust ore waste boundaries to cater for blast movement. Rock movement resulting from blasts can result in mischaracterization of grade boundaries resulting in ore loss and dilution. Ore loss takes place when ore is mischaracterized as waste and sent to waste dumps, and dilution occurs when waste is mischaracterized as ore and sent for processing. Las Bambas operations of MMG Peru, realized the economic impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution and adjust ore boundaries using limited blast movement measurements. This is a step in the right direction but has limitations for everyday application. This paper discusses the advantages of disadvantages of current blast monitoring techniques and introduces an operational tool to estimate polygon movements for different blast designs and confinement conditions. Blast movement estimates from this new tool have been compared against the estimates from the current tools for several production blasts and the results were quite promising.

Cationic flotation of quartz is currently utilized for the concentration of iron ores and for the cleaning of phosphate concentrates. The present work deals with depression of quartz in the presence of aluminum ions during cationic flotation. It was established-that aluminum ions depress the flotation of quartz with an amine, especially under neutral and very slightly alkaline conditions. Studies of adsorption of Al ions on the quartz surface as a function of pH correlated with depression of this mineral with an amine as collector. The presence of Al ions also enhanced the depressant action of corn starch on quartz The sodium salt of ethylenediaminotetra-acetic(EDTA) was found to be an effective complexing agent to supress the depression caused by aluminum ions.

High-resolution seismic reflection profiling can be used to evaluate detailed struc¬tural and stratigraphic features of coal pros¬pects. Since most coal prospects are relatively shallow (less than six hundred meters deep), the vertical and lateral resolution of seismic data can be significantly improved by high sampling rates in space and time. The case study present¬ed shows the effective use of seismic data in evaluation of the Wyodak coal at a prospective coal gasification site. The data were used to map the detailed structure and thickness of the coal and to search for lateral discontinuities, such as pinchouts and. faults. An important find was a paleochannel cutting across the base of the coal seam, which was later confirmed by drilling.

BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January of 1995 to develop long term plans for decommissioning of the waste rock material at their Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 billion tonnes of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, the operators will deposit a total of approximately 5 billion tonnes in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semi-arid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia, approximately 1200km north-northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion, and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. A laboratory program and the soil-atmosphere modelling completed to design the horizontal field test plots are described. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots are discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The key components of the instrumentation program are the design and installation of large scale field lysimeters to measure the unsaturated flow of moisture into the waste rock from the base of the cover layer. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapo-transpiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. A key feature of the design is the use of pit run waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long term performance.

Underground water, whether it is a mine seep, in situ leach solu­tion, or a pollution plume, is difficult to track and monitor. Monitoring wells are costly to drill and may be placed in the wrong spot. This report describes a test of an electromagnetic technique to track acid water draining from the Midnite Mine near Spokane WA. The tests successfully mapped the path of acid mine drainage being collected at the mine from two seeps. Several small side branches flowing to smaller seeps and a mix­ing zone where relatively clean water mixed with the acidic water, were also mapped. The study has changed previous opin­ions on the flow of water through the site and will be used as a basis for future site remediation planning.

U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

The Central and Southern Appalachians were the major sources of gold in the United States throughout the first half of the 19th century and have continued to yield gold to the present day. Small amounts of gold were probably extracted by the Indians and the Spaniards but the first documented report of gold in the region was made by Thomas Jefferson who found a four pound lump of gold ore, which yielded 0.85 troy oz., in the Rappahannock River of Virginia in 1782. Gold was subsequently discovered in North Carolina between 1793 and 1799, in Virginia in 1806, in South Carolina in 1827, in Georgia in 1829 and in Alabama about 1830 (Becker, 1894-5; Pardee and Park, 1948). The gold belts of the Central and Southern Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces are shown in Figure 1. The superimposed circles indicate the mount of production from some of the more productive and well known areas. Although North Carolina produced far more gold than the other states, the most significant concentrated area of production is the Dahlonega District in Georgia which yielded more than 500,000 troy ounces. After discovery, gold production increased rapidly as shown in Figure 2. Production was at its maximum between 1830 and 1852 with combined totals generally exceeding 30,000 troy ounces per year. Production dropped sharply after the California gold rush in 1849 as experienced miners moved westward in search of bigger and easier stakes. After the Civil War briefly halted gold mining in the Appalachians, production rose to an average of about 8,000 ounces per year from 1865 until 1878 and to an average of about 13,000 ounces per year from 1881 until 1915 when it again fell to near nil (Pardee and Park, 1948). Minor resurgences occurred in the 1930's and 1940's. Although there has been no reported production in recent years, it is likely that "weekend panners" still remove hundreds of ounces from streams annually. The total reported production for the area through 1959 is in excess of 2.5 million troy ounces.
