Results are presented from a series of tests designed to determine the beneficial effects of the microorganism Thiobacillus ferrooxidans upon the leaching of uranium from a pyritic uranium ore. Minus 1-inch (-25mm) 0.0711 percent uranium containing, pyritic ore from the Rio Algom Mine at Elliott Lake, Canada was leached with lixiviants of various Eh and pH as well as being subjected to a biologically-assisted ferric iron leach. In all cases, the biological leach gave superior extraction. At pH 1.6, the biological leach gave 100.6 percent extraction and the ferric iron leach 69.8 percent. This improvement in extraction is associated with a relatively rapid biological breakdown of the pyritic material, thus liberating uranium mineralization associated with these pyritic materials and regenerating the ferric sulphate lixiviant in situ.

Increasing conveyor capacity and reliability is a common goal for many underground mines. This task is especially challenging when you must work with existing structure, belt, etc. Meeting this challenge, The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co. North River Mine switched from constant fill to actively controlled fluid couplings, realizing a capacity increase from 2,100 tons per hour (2,300 stph) to 2,550 tons per hour (2,800 stph), with improved reliability. This paper will present a case study of The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co.'s North River Mine underground conveyor haulage system. These conveyors included the main line conveyors as well as a tension controlled tripper booster panel conveyor. Characteristics and performance of the coupling and control system will be illustrated, demonstrating the systems controllability, simplicity, and dependability.

A sizable surface mining industry exists in Western Canada. There are the surface coal mines in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan producing the bulk of Canadian Coal. The two oil sands plants in Fort McMurray, Alberta producing synthetic crude oil are surface mining operations. Much of the metalliferous mining in British Columbia is carried out by open pit methods. This paper discusses the current surface mining methods in both of these industries with particular reference to Alberta. Issues relating to environmental impact assessment, mine reclamation and mine site closure have been dealt with.

The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,

In maybe the world's first in a mine project financing, a US $55 million Rehabilitation Indemnity was given on behalf of the banks in a US $250 million loan to develop the Ranger uranium mine, Northern Territory, Australia. The basis of the financing was an estimate of removal of the tailings and replacement into the pit. The Indemnity was amortized by a sinking fund from the mine's revenues. Such a concept could be valuable for mineral developments in sensitive areas or jurisdictions such as British Columbia or Alaska.

"Every year the tunneling business is expanding and collaboration with the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) for the future design of cities and urban communities is in the making. During the last half of this century, billions of people migrated to cities, and it is estimated that by 2030 almost five billion people worldwide will reside in urban communities. Hence, “Underground development will be an important tool in reshaping our urban areas to meet the challenges of the future without destroying their heritage or worsening their surface environment” (Esaki, 2005). In 2013, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimated life expectancy to be around 80 years, meaning that in less than a decade we will need to bury billions of people in cities and urban communities, while trying to retain the deceased’s beliefs and customs. Religion plays a major role in our lives, and many people worldwide still decline to cremate their body after their death; therefore, cemeteries are essential for city inhabitants. Rites and traditions usually call for burials to be near the place of residence, which allows the remaining family members and friends to visit the grave frequently, at least in the first years. This is a challenge that urban designers and architects must confront while trying to solve the problems of future urbanization. In recent years, population growth, the rising cost of land and the extensive preservation of green areas have made cemeteries a burden and a nuisance, particularly for large cities and communities. Many graveyards that were once on the city's outskirts have become lifeless islands in populated areas (Fig. 1), rarely visited by the second and later generations. Cities worldwide face the challenge of allocating less land to maintain current burial practices. In response, some cities have begun to bury their dead at a great distance from the community; others have started to stacked burials, one on top of the other, while still others are constructing buildings and even skyscrapers for the practice of burial (Fig. 2)."

A significant amount of silca is recovered in the rougher stage of anionic flotation of Florida apatite. This recovery, in the past, has been attributed to both entrainment and cation activated flotation. This study shows that by using a transport factor, it is possible to determine the contribution of each mechanism towards silica recovery. Further, it is shown that the concentration of cations in the conditioning water significantly affects both the amount of silica recovered due to entrainment and true flotation. Further confirmation of this phenomenon was obtained by Ca++ doping of the conditioning water and by using a sodium silicate depressant.

The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. Geostatistics is well known as a tool for ore reserves calculations at the exploration stage. The goal of this paper is to show geoscatistics can also contribute to productivity gains, allow better selection of the mining methods and better control of the grades during production. The first two examples show how geostatistics can provide sophisticated models, using conditional simulations and the use of them for simulations or optimizations of mining processes. A third example will show how to use geostatistics for short term planning in a large polymetallic vein type mine.

While many mine tunnels are developed through ground that must be riddled with the sources of small (and larger) mining induced seismic events, recorded by the mine seismic monitoring systems, we do not see planar discontinuities classified as seismic sources in the geotechnical databases. Here we list criteria that may be useful to identify discontinuities in drill core which are dynamic slip surfaces, parts of mining induced seismic sources. Such shear rupture surfaces in core would generally be powdery, cohesionless, and rough on cm scale. Finely broken rock and rock flour may be found in the core boxes at the discontinuities. Slickensides would be soft (easily destroyed) and kinematically consistent with the local stress field. In some cases, a cross fabric would be present, orthogonal to the slickensides, being the intersections of en-echelon extension fractures, within the dynamic shear zones, with the shear zone walls.

The introduction of nitro-carbo-nitrate (NCN) blasting agents has been one of the most significant innovations in the explosive industry in the last twenty years. The most commonly used blasting agent is a rather narrowly proportioned mixture by weight of 94% ammonium nitrate (AN) and 6% No. 2 diesel fuel oil (FO) that is generally designated as ANFO. Other formulations have been developed but none of these have been as extensively used as ANFO. The relative safety of the nitro-carbo-nitrate (NCN) blasting agents almost immediately suggested bulk loading techniques to obtain economies in materials handling. The first attempt at bulk handling was to pneumatically load boreholes with ANFO. When the initial experiments were made in 1957, it was apparent that there were three problem areas which needed study to minimize potential hazards. These were: 1. Static Electricity 2. Fumes 3. Safe Handling Procedures Since those early days, considerable work has been performed in evaluating these problem areas and in arriving at procedures and recommendations that would provide the required safety. Despite the relative insensitivity of ANFO type products, all normal practices for the safe handling of explosives should be obselved. Smoking should not be tolerated in the vicinity of blasting agents and misfires should be handled in the same manner as a misfire with a dynamite charge. The purpose of this Technical Report is to discuss the problems of static electricity and fumes and the solutions that have been developed. Safe handling procedures have been discussed by the Bureau of Mines and are specified by various state and local regulations. Since regulations vary from state to state, the local, applicable regulations must be followed within the area of their jurisdiction. General information is contained in a U. S. Bureau of Mines report, IC 8179, "Safety Recommendations for Sensitized Ammonium Nitrate Blasting Agents" (1963).

The design and planning for the construction of a new passageway to improve access and circulation to better accommodate anticipated increased passenger flow within Grand Central—42nd Street Station. The passageway includes the break-in of an over 100-year-old station cavern with an innovative design implementing a protective structure above the existing track to allow for safe train operations and passenger circulation during construction. Construction of the new passageway follows the Sequential Excavation Method. This paper will present the innovative solutions that went into the preliminary design and planning considering construction access, site logistics, risk management, structural retrofitting, instrumentation and monitoring, and impact assessments.

Although the economic importance of recovering copper by leaching of mine work dumps from open-pit operations has been realized for some time, serious attempts to understand and to improve such operations through scientific research has been made only in recent years. This progress report covers the results of chemical, physical, and biological studies pertaining to the dump leaching process and discusses salient features and parameters that may be helpful in improving such operations.

In the post war years metals analysts and statisticians have generally tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in OECD industrial production (IP) growth rates because, undoubtedly, the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. However the correlation was exaggerated. During times of expanding IP growth metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked in order to reduce costs. Nonetheless, overall, a reasonable correlation between IP growth, over the longer term, and metal demand could be painted. Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world's IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, latterly including Japan. The so called "developing world" was of little consequence, whilst countries of the Soviet Union and Communist Bloc were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities which, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated and takes little account of the worldwide political changes which have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China, albeit under a notional communist government. It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs namely, western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are at work and are attempting to satisfy, with some considerable success, the expectations of the great mass of the world's poorer people. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. Now, with free market forces at work their aspirations will start to be met. Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate than at any other time in the world's history. Not only will the production of raw materials have to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world but will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of rapidly increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries. This paper sets out to argue the case that metal demand could well increase at a rate faster than the world's mining companies, governments and financiers can deliver.

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

The four unit Cholla coal fired power station at Joseph City, Arizona, consumes coal from the McKinley mine located in western New Mexico. Since coals may contain relatively high uranium or thorium concentrations and may release quantities of detrimental progeny of these elements to the environs, there is concern that releases may pose an adverse environmental impact or even a health hazard to the workers. Thus, an effort was made to quantify the radionuclide content of the coal and compare the results with radionuclide concentrations already present in the vicinity of the plant. Additionally an attempt was made to assess any potential for significant enhancement of the levels of radioactivity in the environment or to plant personnel. Background gamma radiation measurements at and near the plant ranged from 8 to 12 [µ]R/hr (70 to 105 mR/yr) with a few localized anomolies measuring to 18 [u]R/hr (160 mR/yr). Levels on top of the coal storage piles decreased to ~ 6.5 [u]R/hr (60 mR/yr). Apparently the direct radiation emitted from the coal is less than the background levels in the vicinity of the plant. Measurements performed on top of several coal seams at the mine confirmed low radiation levels emanating from coal, but readings more than doubled when the overburden was monitored. Laboratory gamma spectrometry confirmed the lower amounts of natural radioactivity in the coal when compared against soil and water samples obtained in the vicinity of the plant and the overburden at the mine. In an effort to see if there is biological enhancement, animal feces was sampled. The radiation variations were found to be influenced primarily by naturally occurring potassium-40 which varied from ~ 1 to 18 pCi/gm rather than fluctuations in the uranium and thorium series. The potassium-40 concentrated in the ash were similar to the concentrations in the environs around the disposal ponds while Radium-226 concentrated in the fly ash was ~ 3 times that found in the immediate surroundings. Radon-222 gas concentrations in buildings at or near the plant ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pCi/l and were generally lower than indoor concentrations measured in the Phoenix area. The burning of coal at the Cholla station does not appear to increase ambient levels of radioactivity found in the surrounding environs or to the workers. However, the use of byproduct fly ash for construction purposes may need to be examined.

"Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. The feasibility of maintaining equipment location, personnel location and vital statistics in surface and underground mining operations has increased with advances in radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The paper addresses the use of this technology, relatively new in the mining industry, to track surface equipment in mine pits, loading points, and processing facilities. Specific applications are discussed including a simplified and a complex truck tracking system and an automatic pit ticket system. The paper concludes with a discussion of the future possibilities of RFID technology in mining, such as monitoring biofeedback of personnel (heart and respiration rate, body temperature, exertion level, etc.) repetitious movements to study work habits, and logging air quality via personnel sensors.

In October, November and December, teachers at the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) area conventions were lured to visit the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) booth by the promise of free rocks, video tapes, and literature on earth science topics. Teachers were content to stand in lines that at times took as much as an hour and a half to progress through the exhibit. Adding to their interest was the opportunity to converse with people from the minerals industry who were staffing the booth. The MEC was formed by a group of associations and companies in the minerals industry. They felt the need to educate the public about the current-day minerals industry and how it affects everyone's life. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME) underwrote the major expenses of exhibit space and exhibitor services at all three conventions in 1997. SME members have been active in staffing and chairing the NSTA exhibit booth. But they represented only about one-third of the volunteers for the booth. Additional volunteers were drawn from local minerals companies, associations, interested teachers and other support groups. (See donors list on page 64.) In 1997, the conventions were held in Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO and Nashville, TN. The local SME GEM Committees chaired Pittsburgh and Denver and The Rogers Group Inc. supplied the chairperson in Nashville. Each exhibit relies on a local committee to plan and run the booth. Support is available from the GEM Projects Coordinator at SME headquarters. Usually the chair of the committee is drawn from the local SME membership. It is easy to see why the MEC booth is so popular. Free literature, videos, posters, workshop packets and rock specimens were handed out to about 5,500 science teachers at the three sites. Feedback from the attending teachers was overwhelmingly positive: "Who do we thank for these great materials?" Some of those great materials included Caterpillar's outstanding donation of Common Ground videos and teacher packets for Pittsburgh, Denver and Nashville for every teacher expected to attend. Placer Dome sent enough What's a Mine coloring books and It Comes from a Mine activity books for teachers at all three sites. Newmont supplied all teachers with an excellent poster describing gold processing. Women in Mining Education Foundation had plenty of its classroom activity handouts. The American Coal Foundation provided a list of its educational materials that are given out free to teachers who request them on school letterhead. The National Mining Association had its Facts About Minerals and Facts About Coal available. US Borax provided the funding to reproduce the NMA black and white posters that were published as inserts in Mining Voice magazine. In addition, each site had other materials chosen by the local committees to round out their selections. At each exhibit site, committees raise between $8,000 and $12,000 in cash donations from industry to support the high overhead of producing this exhibit. Usually, there are between 12 and 18 different rock specimens representing a range of mineral ores from aggregates to the metal ores. The committee arranged to have these donated (along with the freight charges to ship them to the site). Literature is also donated by the industry. It covers a diverse spectrum from basic information on rocks and minerals to posters, flow charts, videos and coloring books. Other donations include storage space before the event, haulage of items to the hall and door prizes. These exhibits could not have been staged without the network of SME Local Sections and the able chairs and committees at each site. At this time, credit should be given to their extensive donation of time and effort.
