Choosing a mining method for an underground orebody is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology have given design teams an array of possibilities for methods and equip¬ment. Hecla Mining's discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body challenged the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine to determine the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization. This includes drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of in¬formation as the project progresses through exploration and development. The Gold Hunter deposit is a steeply dipping vein system in the Wallace Formation of Idaho's Coeur d'Alene mining district. Gold Hunter is a misleading name for the ore body. The vein is a silver-rich, lead-zinc deposit with only traces of gold. The Gold Hunter ore body is located about 1.6 km (1 mile) north to northeast of Mullan, ID. The ore body is mined from the Lucky Friday Mine, located 0.4 km (0.25 miles) east of Mullan. Mining began on the vein from an access drift driven from the Lucky Friday Mine's 4900 level. Production from the ore zone is projected to be 771 t/d (850 stpd). The Gold Hunter ore is combined with Lucky Friday ore and milled in the Lucky Friday mill. The combined ore boosted Lucky Friday's 1998 silver production from 62.2 t/a (2 million oz/year) to more than 124.4 t/a (4 million oz/year).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a image analysis methodology to correlate the energy consumed during the grinding of an ore to the mineral liberation achieved. Energy consumption values are obtained using a laboratory-scale ball mill equipped with a torque sensor, and an automated image analyzer is used to determine the liberation present in ground products. By combining liberation information with energy consumption data an appraisal can be made of the energy required to liberate the mineral(s) of interest. Results of tests performed on a complex sulfide material determined the effects of grind duration on the liberation achieved and the energy efficiency.

The high temperature (180-200 OC ) pressure oxidation (02 - HzSO4) process for the recovery of gold from refractory concentrates (FeS2/FeA8S) is simulated with the aid of a computer model. The model centers on the continuous operation of a multi-stage horizontal autoclave. In particular the effects of key process parameters controlling the autogenous operation of the autoclave are critically examined. The building elements of the model are (i) the continuous particle size distribution function of the concentrate, (ii) the residence time distribution function of the slurry and (iii) the shrinking core kinetics. Conversion is calculated on the basis of the segregated flow model. For the calculation of the particle size distribution at the exit of each compartment the population balance model is employed. The effects of feed rate, feed preheating, cooling, autoclave configuration and rate limiting regime (chemical reaction vs. gas-liquid mass transfer) on the autogenous steady state operation are discussed. Finally optimum reactor design and operation criteria are indicated.

In a previous report 1/the author showed that the essential information from particle size analyses of grinding mill products can be represented by three or four parameters derived from the first four moments of the particle size data. These parameters may be used in gamma or beta distribution functions to estimate the weight fraction in any given size range. Moment analysis was used to study the progressive changes that take place in particle size distribution when a homogeneous isotropic mineral such as quartz is reduced in size by impact crushing. 2/ This report briefly reviews the essential features of moment analysis and describes extension of this method to size reduction by ball mill grinding.

"Froth flotation is a process in which valuable minerals are separated from gangue minerals on the basis of surface wettabilities. It is a universally accepted process for the beneficiation of coal. The large amount of coal fines that have been generated from both mining and beneficiation processes has been reported as a chronic problem to both fine coal preparation and utilization as these fines contain a high amount of ash forming minerals. The current study investigated the potential application of Synthetic Bio-compatible Polymers as slime depressants in fine coal flotation for the possibility to enhance the combustible recovery and ash rejection. Raw coal samples containing 21% of ash-forming minerals were crushed, grinded and floated in the presence of Chitosan polymer. Flotation tests were carried out in D-12 Denver flotation cell with 1-Liter capacity. Flotation outcomes were studied as a function of polymer concentration. Box-Behnken factorial method was used for experimental design. Second order response functions were produced for ash% and combustible recovery. The results obtained from this study demonstrated positive influence of chitosan polymer on ash% and combustible recovery. Ash % was decreased by 3.32 % while an increase of 48.15 % in combustible recovery was observed when chitosan was introduced in the flotation process. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a widely used method of separating minerals by utilizing the difference between surface wettabilities [1], [2].Modern mechanized mining and ore handling operations produce large amounts of coal fines which in the past were not processed but discarded as waste[3]. Even though flotation is the best method of beneficiation for coal, it can be challenging in case of fine coals. In fine coals, slime coatings of colloidal mineral matter exist on the coal surface. These coatings render the coal hydrophilic, hence reducing flotation efficiency and recovery. Of late, different researches have been using biodegradable polymers to determine their feasibility in enhancing fine coal flotation efficiency[4].Naturally occurring and synthetic polymers, for example, polyacrylamide-based polymers, have been widely used in flotation as multifunctional reagents[5],[6],[7]. Hybrid polyacrylamide polymer has been successfully used as a depressant for ash forming minerals in fine coal flotation[3]. Recently, chitosan has been successfully used in flocculating quartz particles to produce faster settling rates of fine tailings [4]."

The near-infrared (NIR) (12,000-4,000 cm-1) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, between the mid-infrared and visible, has often been viewed by spectroscopists to be of limited utility. This is unfortunate, and recently the use of the NIR has increased greatly, primarily for the quantitative analysis of food and agricultural products. However, many other areas of application of NIR spectroscopy remain unexamined. In this paper a novel use of NIR in the area of flotation chemistry is demonstrated. Specifically, it is shown that NIR/Internal Reflection Spectroscopy (IRS) can be used to quantify collector adsorption reactions in-situ.

North American mining companies are lagging behind their global competitors in participating in the outstanding opportunities in India. The Indian government has liberalized foreign equity participation in the mining sector by up to 50% and, in some cases, even higher. Delegates from Europe, North America and South Africa learned this at an information seminar held in London, England, Attendees were welcomed by L.M. Singhvi, the UK's high commissioner for India. He introduced a government of India delegation headed by B.P. Baishya, minister of steel and mines. Singhvi is an eminent jurist and leading constitutional expert. He reiterated the soundness of India's legal system. He also outlined the recent Investment Protection Treaty between India and the United Kingdom. Baishya emphasized thee geological diversity and strengths of India's domestic market with its population of more than 920 million people the second largest in the world after China and its reservoir of skilled labor. He also outlined the potential of India's untapped natural resources. The private sector is the backbone of the Indian economy. It accounts for 75% of gross domestic product (GDP). The current minimum program of the new United Front government envisions 12% growth in the industrial sector, 7% in GDP and direct foreign investment of US$10 billion a year. "Mining is an area that can attract a sizable part of this investment," Baishya said. "Projected growth of the Indian economy will require increasingly large quantities of basic raw materials, such as coal and base- and precious-metals to meet the needs of domestic and export markets." Administration of India's mining sector is divided into the Ministry or Mines for regulating and developing the country's mineral resources, five public sector Mining Enterprises, the Geological-Survey of India (GSI), the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM)and 25 states and seven Union Territories. The GSI is the second oldest (founded in 1851) and the third largest organization of its kind in the world, Baishya said. It has geologically mapped more than 90% of India's 3.2 million kmz (1.2 million sq miles) at a scale of 1:50,000. Several promising mineral projects have emerged from regional exploration programs conducted by GSI and the Mines and Geology State Governments. IBM recently completed a national mineral inventory. It covers 13,000 deposits/prospects of 61 nonferrous minerals. GSI also compiled a similar inventory on 61 coal fields. India is attractive to exploration companies for several reasons. These include favorable geology, accessible locations and a large mineral database. India also has many experienced geoscientists with well-equipped and efficient laboratories, Baishya said. Secretary to the Ministry of Mines A.C. Sen emphasized the largely untapped-geological and mining potential of India. He also discussed the new vistas that have opened up opportunities for exploration and mining. India has large quantities of mineral reserves, Sen said. Its vast Precambrian Shield - like those in Canada and Australia - is endowed with gold, platinum group and base metals, as well as coal and industrial minerals. Annual mineral production is valued at more than US$7 billion. Sen pointed out that India is the largest single consumer of gold. And domestic gold prices command at least a 20% premium above international prices. Recent diamond, gold and base-metal discoveries and prospects uncovered by GSI have generated investment interest from abroad, he added Delegates heard that the Indian Constitution gives the central government the job of framing legislation and the regulation and development of minerals. This ensures that mineral laws are uniform throughout the country. However, the right to grant mineral concessions, such as prospecting licenses and mining leases, rests with the minerals' owner. In India's case, that is the state government. The Indian government has formulated several guidelines that regulate the granting of prospecting licenses for large areas. ? The central government will consider the requests of state governments for the granting of prospecting licenses for areas exceeding 25 kmz (9.6 sq miles). But the license must include a provision to conduct aerial prospecting of the area. ? Any prospecting licensing area should not exceed 5,000 kmz (1,930 sq miles). for a single license. And the total area held by one company should not exceed 10,000 km2 (3,861 sq miles) for the whole country. ? The grant of larger areas will be linked to a mini- mum expenditure commitment on physical targets. State governments will monitor these expenditures. ? The granting of large areas for prospecting will be linked to a schedule of relinquishment.

A review of the evolution of the North American sulfur market's structure serves to dramatize the kinds of changes that the market is undergoing at the present time. In 1970, the U.S. accounted for 23 percent of world sulfur production. This share has not declined dramatically--to 21 percent in 1993--but the U.S. developed into a substantial net importer of sulfur in the past 25 years. U.S. output was based on large deposits of native sulfur in the western part of the Gulf Coast region with production by the Frasch mining process. Producers of Frasch, or on-purpose sulfur, have historically absorbed cyclical fluctuations in sulfur demand. Two major changes in the North American market from that time to now have been the introduction of increasingly large quantities of by-product sulfur from petroleum refining and natural gas processing operations in the U.S. and Canada, and that Canadian producers have become the marginal supply source for U.S. sulfur consumers.

Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.

Since the interpolation of exploratory data 1 can be no better than sampling procedures, a series of field experiments were conducted in an effort to determine whether hand-cut channel or core washability determinations best represent continuous miner produced run of mine coal. By obtaining a core drilled to within a few feet of channels taken from an underground face and then overmining both locations; core, channels and run-of-mine coal allocations were obtained from a common sample and all allocations were subjected to identical washability determinations. In order to compare results, basic rules2,3 previously anticipated and later published by the writer were employed. The first rule states that "For any full seam washability determination, the sulfur versus ash function for increasing cumulative specific gravity float coal fractions is linear". The second rule states that "For any full seam washability determination, the recovery versus ash function for increasing cumulative specific gravity float coal fractions is logarithmic".

In January of 1966, during the annual session of Georgia's General Assembly, Representative Paul E. Nessmith of Statesboro, Georgia, walked into my office and asked me what I thought of the advisability and feasibility of a law which would require the mining operators to reclaim their mined out lands. My answer to him was, as a one time mine superintendent and operator, that I probably would not think very highly of the added cost which reclamation would impose on the operation; but that since assuming the job of Chief Geologist and Assistant Director of the Georgia Department of Mines, Mining and Geology, and in retrospect, I could recommend it very highly, particularly in view of the increased pressure being applied by the Federal government along these lines. I stated then and still emphatically state that this sort of administration should be done on the State level rather than the Federal level. He asked me if I would conduct him on a tour through some of the mining country in which I had worked and to this I readily agreed. The result of this trip was that he was adversely impressed by the devastation which the mining operations had wreaked on that area of middle Georgia along the fall line known as the kaolin belt. Very little except talk was done for the remainder of 1966.

"A study has been undertaken at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) limestone Experimental Mine to determine new fans set up and wiring options.to install additional mine ventilation capacity. Selection for main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Available fans for ventilating the mine are Joy and Alphair axial fans each of 24 kW each and two Spendrup booster fans of 12 kW each. The installation of main mine fans on the surface and underground entails numerous considerations. Design of a ventilation network for the Experimental Mine incorporating surface and booster fans has been accomplished using Ventsim Visual program software. The ventilation network has been separated into two segregated parts. A main surface fan and a booster fan have been used in each segregated part of the network. The mine has had a vane axial Joy fan in place for many years. The Alphair 4800 VAX 1800 full blade adjustable pitch vane axial fan was selected and installed as the other surface fan and eventual replacement for the Joy fan. Main surface fans have been connected individually to booster fans in series. The Alphair main surface fan has been installed vertically. Four different wiring options and related cost estimations for addition of the new main fans to the ventilation network have been considered. The analysis resulted in an innovative steel frame design used to allow the fans, when necessary, to be moved to the side of the shaft so that blast pressures do not damage the blades. INTRODUCTION Main fans are the heart of a mine’s ventilation network and play a key role in supplying required airflow (Haghighat, 2014). The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine has been developed in uniform limestone with few stratigraphic features. The mine floor is approximately horizontal and water drains well. A study has been carried out on MS&T Experimental Mine. Selection of main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Ventsim Visual computer simulation has been used to assist in design of the ventilation network. Wiring circuits, fan foundations and flexibility have been considered as the three main parameters for surface fan installation at the Experimental Mine. Two surface and two underground wiring options and three surface set up options and related cost estimates for the new surface fan system were investigated. Frequent use of explosives in the mine occurs throughout each year. Flexibility in changing the position of a surface fan is important. A number of options have been considered for the location of a vertical main fan positioned on the upcasting shaft. The mine is used for a variety of purposes and flexibility has a high priority amongst design considerations."

INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution's acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. The Northside Storage Tunnel Project in Sydney includes over 20 km of TBM driven tunnels, over three km of declines and major caverns and pump rooms. The paper describes methods used for design on the project. Emphasis is given to the refinement of the use of empirical rock mass classifications, and to the use of discontinuum numerical methods. The use of empirical rock mass classifications in Sydney sandstone has usually led to conservative design because the systems are based on a random orientation of joints in the rockmass. Because the joint sets are usually oriented in a way that is beneficial for tunnelling, limits must be placed on the parameters used in the classifications system. The paper discusses these limits and the derivation of the parameters. The use of numerical methods in Sydney sandstone is discussed. Continuum methods have their uses, but discontinuum methods are preferred. The use of UDEC has been validated against a previous project, the New Southern Railway. Recommendations are given for UDEC models. In Sydney's geology, so advantageous for tunnelling, the challenges of this project have been to make the best use of the good conditions, while maintaining safety for the workforce and the future operators of the project.

Nast Tunnel is the first granitic rock tunnel to be excavated by a machine for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The machine has excavated 7500 ft of the tunnel at this writing. There have been a few good performances; 31 ft in 1, 8 hr shift, and 75 ft in a 24 hr period, but generally, progress has been slower than that accomplished in the area with reasonable comparable conditions using conventional excavation techniques. Button cutters, now employed using compression as the means of fracturing the rock, gives an average cutting rate of 3 ft per hr. Disc cutters manufactured by the machine builders were tried briefly but the snap rings holding the discs to the hub failed. However, disc cutting rates of 6 ft per hr were recorded for short periods of time in a competent coarse grained porphyritic granite. The snuck was also considerably larger and more easily handled than that produced by the button cutters. Hughes Tool Co. is working on a disc type cutter and expects to have them on the cutterhead by mid June. LOCATION, DESCRIPTION AND BID OPENING Nast Tunnel is located 2 miles west of the Continental Divide and 39 miles east of the town of Basalt in Pitkin County, Colorado. The outlet portal is in the Fryingpan River Valley at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The tunnel is a 3 mile long, 10 ft diameter gravity flow water conveyance structure and a part of the west slope water collection for the Bureau of Reclamation, Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. In June 2005 the Minerals Council of Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian Government which states an intention ?for mining companies and government to work together with Indigenous people to build sustainable, prosperous communities in which individuals can create and take up social, employment and business opportunities in mining regions?. Implementation of the MoU has begun with demonstration sites established across Australia. All sites are using a Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA) model as a framework for enabling local people to find local solutions to local issues in partnership with mining companies, governments and Indigenous communities. Mining and resources companies can provide important input into regional economic development and capacity building by working through local partnerships. Company benefits include gaining a social licence to operate, access to a reliable skilled workforce, better longterm relationships with Indigenous communities and sustainable regional communities. All levels of government, Australian, State and Local, are working collaboratively to address unemployment and other issues in remote Indigenous communities. The Australian Government has adopted RPAs as one mechanism for implementing its whole-of-government approach to Indigenous affairs. This leading edge work is unique to Australia and the model has applications and significant learning for other countries and industries.

A 14.6 cm (5.75 in.) diameter by 1.83 m (6 ft) tall laboratory-size column is used in flotation of Florida phosphates of different feed sizes. In this paper, the effects of different parameters on the flotation efficiency of coarse particles (belt feed, -1.4 + 0.5 mm, i.e., 14 x 35 mesh) under negative bias are discussed. Parameters included collector dosage, frother type and dosage, and conditioning water, which contained a residual concentration of collector. Flotation tests were performed using statistical designs. The results strongly suggest that flotation performance is dependent on the used combination of reagents. Interactions between frothers and the collector and, consequently, the flotation efficiency were found to be dependent on frother type and presence or absence of conditioning water. Under the negative bias, an excellent recovery of more than 98% of phosphate was achieved in concentrates of high grade (above 31% P205) from such feed of coarse particles.

A series of iron-leaching experiments were conducted to test the ability of metal-reducing anaerobic organisms to reduce iron from Fe3+ to Fe2+ to dissolve it from iron ore tailings. This bioleaching process involves the fermentation of biomass from Typha latifolia (a common wetland plant) to generate organic compounds, which, along with metal-reducing organisms, reduce and dissolve iron. The concentration of dissolved iron over time was studied for one year. Iron concentration above 1150 mg/L was achieved at a pH range of 3.95–5.36. Tailings from multiple locations were examined.

Eastern Jamaica consists predominantly of non-carbonate rocks reaching elevations of over 2200 m. The area is drained by a well established river network which supplies close to 30% of the sand and gravel used by the building and construction sector. Present high extraction rates and slow rates of replenishment will result in early exhaustion of this source of aggregate. A number of volcanic and carbonate rocks are being examined as a possible source of high quality aggregate which meet the requirements for all types of construction. Preliminary evaluations show a dacitic deposit to be the most suitable source for aggregate use.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) established a Technical study panel (the Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the belt evaluation laboratory test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 91 - 107 cm (36- to 42-in.) wide conveyor belt. Due to today’s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 183 cm (72 in.) and wider conveyor belts. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.
