The advent of larger quantities of -1/4 inch coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content.

"The authors have successfully developed an innovative rehabilitation concept, which meets actual technical standards and minimizes the impact on the operation of a key conveyor tunnel. A flexible and stepwise ground support rehabilitation program utilized a combination of yielding steel arch sections with grout filled fabric hoses, which represents a fast and safe backfilling support system. The system was developed and successfully installed at Bingham Canyon Mine, the world’s largest open pit copper mine, which also includes numerous underground structures. The mine is owned and operated by Kennecott Utah Copper (RTKC) a fully owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The system was implemented at a conveyance tunnel, which was originally designed as a railroad tunnel, but was re-commissioned and is currently used as a conveyor belt tunnel to transport ore from the open pit to processing facilities outside the mine. The existing structure showed signs of overstressing due to movements in the surrounding rock mass, which had to be addressed with a yielding support system in order to provide safe access into the tunnel. However, the impact on the conveyor belt operation due to support installation was to be limited to the bare minimum. Keywords: rehabilitation, yielding support, mining, stabilization, and grout filled fabric hose.PROJECT DESCRIPTION The C6 Tunnel is considered a critical asset for the operation of the Bingham Canyon mine as it comprises the standard route for transporting crushed ore from the open pit to the processing facility on a continuous conveyor belt system. The C6 tunnel was originally built as a railroad tunnel. Construction was completed in 1959. The original horse-shoe shaped cross section of the tunnel was 18 feet wide and 24-1/2 feet high [8]. The tunnel length was approximately 18,000 feet. During its service life, the railroad tunnel has undergone several transformations. The length of the tunnel towards the Bingham Canyon pit was shortened over the course of mining operations and the railroad tracks in the tunnel were removed. The invert was partially backfilled (3 feet typical) and a 72 inches belt conveyor was installed. Currently, the C6 Tunnel is nominally only approximately 21 feet high and 15,000 feet long. Ground Support and Rehabilitation Measures prior to 2014 The C6 tunnel was mined mainly with conventional mining methods, using drill & blast as the typical one. However, the weak geological sections, such as those encountered in the Fortuna fault, were excavated by shaping and chipping with machine-held moils [8]."

Unfavourable climatic conditions in stopes are of significant economic and social importance due to the following reasons: - Working effect is much lower leading to decreased output and work productivity disregarding implementation of mechanization. - Manpower operating capability decreases much faster under unsatisfactory climatic conditions. Under normal climatic conditions a workman would expend much less effort in line with a shorter effective time for the achievement of identical production effects since the work would be more efficacious. The objective of study of problems and climatic conditions is to make the working environment in mines suitable for normal development of operations. Lowering of mining works to increasing depths and winning of a growing number of small orebodies over a broad area makes the problem of creating suitable climatic circumstances more complex. Mining costs are growing due to bench conditions in line with decreasing metal content in the ore, so frequently the investments required for creating favourable climatic conditions represent, in addition to the selection of mining technology, a very important parameter when making decisions regarding exploitation. As known, the basic factors affecting climatic operating conditions in mines-are: temperature, humidity and speed of air flow, implying that the climatic operating conditions are closely related to mine ventilation. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic operating conditions includes increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow velocity so that heat exchange between human organism and the working environment is impeded or reduced to minimum. Metal mines in Yugoslavia are characterized by the existence of a large number of active faces - stopes and horizons and lowering of mining operations to increasing depths, so that face ventilation solutions are more and more complex. Since its foundation (1961), our Institute is engaged in investigation of factors influencing climatic circumstances improvement of calculations for air distribution and distribution control in complex ventilation networks and study of problems related to ventilation of large volume and irregular configuration faces, as well as application of gained knowledge in our mines. The paper presents the knowledge and experience gained in the case of Lead and Zinc Mine "Trepca" - Stari Trg.

A PC-based simulation model using the software packages SIMAN and CINEMA was developed to simulate and animate truck-shovel operations. The model is capable of simulating one mathematical dispatching strategy using linear and dynamic programming and six heuristic dispatching strategies. Data were collected from an actual operating mine through time studies and analysis of historical records. Statistical analyses were performed, and appropriate theoretical distributions were fitted for various time events in the truck-shovel cycle. The model was then applied to study overall impact of these dispatching strategies on constrained and unconstrained mine productivity. The simulation/animation model developed in this study seems to be an efficient planning tool for choosing optimal fleets and finding an optimal dispatching strategy to produce an equilibrium between the quality and quantity of production.

Mining and environmental objectives have traditionally been in conflict. This conflict reflects a delicate balance between the need to spend money to protect the environment, and the need to save money by extracting minerals efficiently. In an increasing number of cases, profit margins diminish rapidly with new environmental regulations and reactionary measures. Forced cleanups and increasing restrictions are unwelcome expensive processes. A practical solution lies in planning rather than reacting. This requires the ability to precisely quantify and qualify environmentally sensitive problems by providing effective engineering tools to model, visualize and analyze subsurface conditions. Prevention of environmental conflicts, and effective cost control are both rooted in the mining company's ability to construct accurate models, monitor changes, assess contamination risks and to design effective remediation plan. This paper presents a case study where these issues are addresses through the application of a new and innovative technology.

The paper describes hazardous water inflows during construction that have taken place over the last three years in tunnels in Colombia. The projects involved are the Chivor II Hydroelectric Power Project (penstock tunnel), and the Chingaza Water Project (two tunnels). In all cases, loss of face control led to significant loss of ground; in one case some 70,000 m3 of slide material was involved, much of which came out through the portal situated 1.6 km from the face. Emphasis is given to: (a) the geologic setting, (b) the remedial measures taken, and (c) the main efforts that can be made to prevent hazardous conditions from developing.

The limestone resources of Hawaii are derived chiefly from emerged fringing coral reef and coastal dune deposits of Pleistocene age. These deposits are most abundant on the island of Oahu and other older islands and least abundant on the island of Hawaii, the youngest. Their origin and depositional environment were influenced by glacio-eustatic rising and falling of sea levels during Pleistocene time. Dredged reef limestone deposits from two deep-water harbor projects have provided additional resources. Limestone uses include cement and lime manufacturing, concrete sand and aggregate, mad base material, beach sand replenishment, agricultural lime and golf course construction.

Hanna Mining Company's Groveland Mine is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron ore deposit consists of a mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, jasper, quartz and various iron silicates (1). The ore is beneficiated by magnetic separation and anionic flotation of the iron minerals with chemical depression of the silica. The magnetic concentrate makes up about 75% of the concentrate. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 2.0 million LTPY of pellet production. The concentrator facilities were started up in 1959 and the concentrate was marketed as sinter feed until 1963 when the concentrator was expanded and the pelletizing plant was added. The pellet plant now consists of regrinding, elutriation, filtering, balling and induration. The pellet machine is a straight grate which employs updraft drying and cooling and downdraft drying, preheat and firing. It is necessary to regrind the concentrate before pelletizing. The con-centrate is 60% passing 325 mesh, with a surface area of ±lOOO cm2/Gm, and must be ground to about 83% passing 325 mesh, 1600 cm2/Gm blaine surface area, for pelletizing. The energy for regrind has been reduced from 12.5 KW per LT to 8.80 KW ate of 2.0 million per LT. This was the result of changes made in the concentrator where originally a coarse spiral concentrate, instead of the magnetic concentrate which is screened on fine screens to reduce the coarse fraction and prevent overgrinding before flotation, was produced. Also in 1968 an additional concentrating line was added to the concentrator which employs more grinding power than the other three lines. The demand for a high iron grade and lower silica pellet resulted in the investigation of different schemes of upgrading the reground concentrate which had more iron values liberated during grinding for surface area. The reagentized material presented many problems, mainly in selectivity trying to flot the iron and with high reagent consumption having to dereagentize the concentrate for amine silica flotation, in the various flotation systems tried. The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant has been investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of experiments was carried out at 75°C and the results were compared with the equilibrium consideration on the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia was considered at three different temperatures. It was found that by introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (r), iodine (12) and triiodide (13') is increased substantially which in turn helps the rate of dissolution of gold. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical controlled mechanism.

Freeze and thaw deterioration is a serious problem In con¬crete pavements. The main cause of distress Is thought to be the pore structure of coarse aggregate. In an attempt to characterize deleterious pores, the Iowa Pore Index test and the Expected Durability Factor, as Calculated from the mer¬cury intrusion porosimeter, were devised. This study Included freeze-thaw and sodium and magnesium sulfate soundness testing of sixteen carbonate aggregate samples. In addition, the Iowa Pore Index and the Expected Durability factor were determined for each of the samples. All of the Above mentioned physicochemical parameters were examined using bivriate correlation analysis with the In¬tent to evaluate the effectiveness of the Iowa Pore Index and Expected Durability factor for predicting the frost dur¬ability of an aggregate. The results from the bivariate correlation analysis showed no significant correlation, between the Iowa Pore In¬dex And- Expected Durability factor with the other physico¬chemical parameters investigated. Rust interesting is that the Iowa Pore index predicted that All of the tested samples would resist freeze-thaw failure, whereas the Expected Durability factor predicted that -ash sample would he non-durable.

The high tension process which separates materials based on relative differences in surface conductivity has been very successful in recovering non-ferrous metals from municipal waste. Aluminum is by far the largest constitutent of the total non-ferrous metal fraction; accounting for >95% in most localities. Wire and insulation mixtures from industrial wastes have been treated commercially for several years by a high tension process initially developed for use in the iron ore industry. The wire and insulation application was a forerunner of municipal waste dry treatment technology. In the past eighteen months the rotating-drum-type electrostatic separator has undergone extensive testing and development in order that the process might be efficiently adapted to the recovery of aluminum from municipal waste.

Increased recycling of waste paper has been emphasized in recent years in both the USA and Canada for environmental and economic reasons. Removal of ink particles from the waste paper pulp is therefore necessary. One of the most promising methods for ink removal is froth flotation. Our study investigated the feasibility of a simplified flotation scheme which showed that about 90-92% ink removal can be achieved while 95-97% ink removal is achievable if a hydrophobic polymer is used ahead of flotation. The clean paper pulp recovery was over 90%. The effects of pulping pH, flotation pH, and concentrations of flotation and polymeric reagents are discussed in the paper.

In planning an underground room and pillar mine, the selection of the shaft or portal location and the orientation of the main haulage arteries is of paramount importance, particularly in view of the high dependence of the cost of truck haulage on the proper definition of these parameters. In an effort to facilitate this selection a computer program was written which, by relating the truck characteristics to the areal configuration of the property or ore-body, derives the volume-weighted total fuel and time requirements for hauling ore from every panel within the property to a specified portal or shaft location through a predetermined gridwork of haulage drifts. By varying the size and orientation of the gridwork and the location of the portal or shaft access, an infinite number of configurations can be investigated. The results of this analysis can be plotted to indicate the optimum conditions.

Entry stability in coal mines is dependent on geologic conditions and engineering controls. Most engineering controls in ground control are predictable and standardized for typical geologic conditions. However, geologic anomalies may exist that are difficult to detect with traditional core hole drilling. Borescopes offer a cost-efficient way to gather more geologic data between core holes. Additional data obtained from borescope results provide a clearer picture to enhance detection of hazardous conditions due to geologic anomalies. The equipment, methods, and analysis of borescope results provide geomechanical engineers with a clear understanding of strata behavior and the best information to implement roof control plans and supplemental support to enhance miner safety and health. INTRODUCTION Borescope technology has changed very little since its inception. However, the idea to use borescopes to examine roof strata started with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1979 with the production of a fiber-optic borescope (FitzSimmons, et al., 1979). The first documented use of a borescope in the coal mining industry began during the 1980s in Australia by researcher John Shepherd. Shepherd’s idea was to use a borescope to collect a series of data points from the roof lithology and compose a geologic cross section. The cross section was then used to identify key features that suggested the beginnings of roof failure. The features Shepherd identified were bedding plane separations in the roof and low angle, extension, and tensile failures. Shepherd also suggested that the borescope findings could be used for geologic mapping for lithological variation, fracture distribution, and determining if supplemental roof support was needed (Shepherd, et al., 1986). In the United States the first publication about borescope usage for coal mine stability assessment was by Su and associates in 1999, who specifically related the combination of using borescope, geophysical, and corehole data to produce geologic hazard maps (Su et al., 1999). This work directly linked the usage of a borescope with the design of supplemental roof support. The use of borescopes in mining was adopted industry wide by the 2000s. Operator case studies were being published using borescopes to aid in supplemental support recommendations and hazard mapping. An Australian study published in 2007 based the optimization of secondary support after each longwall pass on the results of borescope data. The study stated that the borescope was an invaluable tool for understanding roof behavior (Black, et al., 2007). In 2009, a publication by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) took the concept of borescoping one step further. The work centered around creating a roof quality index (RQI) for limestone mines based on borescope data. The RQI attempted to assign a ranking to establish the nature of the roof and its stability (Ellenberger 2009). In theory, this would have been a very useful tool, but the RQI system has not been widely adopted in the industry.

This paper introduces some of the problems encountered it pitch seam mining as they apply to the convention, room and pillar system employed at the present time. Further described is the test work now being conducted to overcome these obstacles with an. attendant increase in productivity. "Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have advocated the use of instrumentation in underground mine ground control studies to aid in understanding failure mechanisms and to calibrate numerical models. The purpose of these efforts is to reduce accidents and fatalities in underground mines resulting from inadequate design of mining layout or supports. A recent examination of some results of stress change measurement raised some questions about the validity of elastic solutions in ground, such as coal. Particularly under deep cover as is prevalent in the western United States, the coal around a borehole would likely have yielded so that post-yield behavior would govern the response of the instrument.A numerical experiment was conducted by NIOSH researchers using the FLAC software (Itasca Consulting Group, 2016) to investigate the response of the borehole pressure cell (BPC) and the biaxial stressmeter to varying degrees of plastic behavior. The pre-encapsulated BPC cell pressure exhibits increasing departure from the elastic case with decreasing post-peak-strength slope of the stress-strain curve. On the other hand, because the BSM usually provides much more confinement to the surrounding rock than does the BPC, the measurements obtained from the BSM do not depart significantly from the changes in secondary principal stresses and directions as calculated by the elastic solution.INTRODUCTIONSeveral years ago, Larson et al. (2000) described several instruments that NIOSH had used in underground field studies and how to monitor them with dataloggers. This information is still relevant because of the need to understand how excavation affects the stability of mines and thus, the safety of mining personnel. One class of instruments described in that paper includes those instruments that measure change in rock stress. Although several such instruments might be used to measure stress change, the focus of this paper is on two instruments with which NIOSH has had more recent experience—the borehole pressure cell (BPC) (Geokon, 2018a; RST Instruments, 2018) and the biaxial stressmeter (BSM) (Geokon, 2018b). Other instruments, such as the CSIRO hollow inclusion stress cell (HICell) (Earth Sciences, 2019; Worotnicki and Walton, 1976) may be included in future studies.Early studies in the development of the BPC were those of Panek and Stock (USBM, 1964), Sellers (1970), Lu (1984), and Babcock (1986). Babcock’s work is particularly useful, but his setting and testing range was far below what we experienced in the NIOSH study, and it was Babcock’s data reduction scheme from his laboratory experiments that was used to calculate stress change in the NIOSH study (NIOSH, 2019a)."

INTRODUCTION The tailings, or solid waste, remaining after uranium has been extracted from an ore and the liquid wastes associated with it contain both radioactive and other substances which, if released to the environment, may have a detrimental impact on man and his environment. Although the radioactivity of the waste is of natural origin, the mining and milling process results in bringing the radioactive ore to the surface, changing its chemical and physical form, increasing its mobility and, therefore, enhancing the potential radiological exposure to man. Exposure to radionuclides released from a tailings impoundment, while small as applied to any one generation, can be made large by counting far into the future, large enough to be the dominant source of exposure from the nuclear fuel cycle, Cunningham (1978). Increasingly it is being found that where the prime concern was initially the radionuclide releases, the release of other pollutants and contaminants may be of equal or greater concern. While there is a definite benefit, at least to present generations, resulting from the recovery of uranium, current and long-term concerns require that consequential present and future releases be kept as low as is reasonably achievable. Design practice, to minimize this release, is currently passing through a technical revolution; precipitated by public and institutional concerns. New techniques and methods are, therefore, being actively sought and continuously implemented. Because of the complexity of the pollutant release mechanisms and the sitespecific nature of each impoundment site and tailings product, a wide variety of site selection and design options have been implemented or considered. It is often possible to design a number of satisfactory tailings disposal schemes which differ widely in nature and cost. Rock bursts in the deep metal mines of the Coeur d’Alene district present an ever increasing problem in the safe and economic mining of the district’s silver, lead and zinc ores. Hecla Mining Company operates two mines in the district - the Star, a 1100-ton/day lead-zinc mine, and the Lucky Friday, a 750-ton/day silver- lead mine. Rock burst problems at both operations prompted Hecla management to make an all-out attempt to find a practical method of predicting and eventually controlling these bursts. Research by personnel from the Denver Research Center of the Bureau of Mines at ASARCO's Galena Mine indicated that a recognizable pattern of seismic activity preceded some bursts and this activity could be precisely monitored by present- day, off-the-shelf electronic devices. Using information gained by the Bureau and other sources, Hecla designed and installed a 24,- channel seismic monitoring system in the Lucky Friday mine. Installation was completed in December 1973 and after a year of successful operation, it was decided that a similar system would be installed in the Star mine. This second installation was completed in June 1975. Both systems are now operating and providing continuous information on underground seismic activity. Each monitoring system consists of a network of geophones with attendant amplifiers that are connected by shielded cable through an interfacing device to a computer. The origin of each seismic event is determined by the computer and a three-dimensional location is printed out. This information is plotted daily and is used to pinpoint rock burst prone areas and chart their relative seismic activity. This paper will review the causes and effects of rock bursts in the Coeur d'Alene district, the equipment and operation of the microseismic system at the Star and Lucky Friday mines, and the results obtained to date.

The purpose of this paper is to give recommendations for utilization of water resources in a mining region, considering also water supply and environment; the case study of mining for coal and bauxite under the karstic aquifer of the Transdanubian mountain of Hungary is used to illustrate the approach, which consists in formulating a static multiobjective control model and solving it by compromise programming. The three activities of regional mineral resource exploitation, water supply and environmental protection are represented by different objectives which cannot be expressed in commensuerable units. Thus, a solution which is optimal for one objective is usually far from being optimal with respect to the other two objectives. As a result, we are not seeking an optimal solution for the conjunctive regional system, but a good compromise, trade-off or "satisfactum" (1), (2).
