In this research, geological characteristics of sand quarries around the village, Kemerburgaz Akpinar, are studied and the mineralogical, petrographical, chemical and technological characteristics (such as sieve analysis, relative density, water absorbtion etc.) of the sand samples, obtained from the area are explained. In the general area sand' quarries, being in lacustrine formations belonging to Neogen, the stratigraphic location of the sand occurences take place at high levels of these formations, geologically. All of this pattern, being under 1 mm with a ,particle dimension, it ranges from 0,5 mm in the quantity of 99 % to 0,25 mm in the quantity of 15 relative density is 2,65 g/cm3 ; water absorbtion is 0,9%. Mineralogically, the sand samples contain Quartz (84%), Feldspar (3%), Calcite + Aragonite (10%), Pyroxen+Amphibole (1-2%), Garnet+Tourmaline (0.5%), Olivine (0.1-0.5%). Besides, sand samples contain SiO2 with the quantity of above 90%. Containing Quartz at high levels for mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics, Akpinar sand will be evaluated as silica sand when the carbonate mineral is removed with the method of ore preparation such as leaching.

The last 10 years have seen a dramatic increase in the requirements for product coal quality control. This has led to electric utility sulfur scrubbing, metallurgical blast furnace optimization and coal producer blend and yield optimization. To achieve this improved level of control, coal producers are designing facilities that emphasize new technology. New facilities will be designed and existing facilities will be retrofitted with state-of-the-art technology to meet quality control standards that are dictated by the market. The first step in designing for process control requires the identification of those parameters to be controlled and the upsets that can cause variances in the final shipped product quality. The most common parameters that require control are the surface moisture (%), ash (%), pyritic sulfur (%) and gross calorific value (Btu). Total moisture is that moisture that exists on the surface of the particle and is inherent in the particle itself. For the purposes of control, the total moisture is monitored, while surface moisture is controlled. Ash is the inorganic residue remaining after all other constituents are burned away at 75O°C( 1382°F)(ASTM, 1992). Sulfur is the amount of total sulfur that exists either as pyrite (FeS2), inorganic sulfate (FeS04), or organic sulfates (C4H4S) (Leonard, 1979). Currently, pyrite is controlled and total sulfur is monitored. The gross calorific value is the amount of heat produced when a unit quantity of coal is ignited under specified conditions. In this case, a l-g (0.03-oz.) sample of coal is ignited in an isoperibol waterbath and the temperature rise of the water bath is observed. The moisture and ash-free (MAF) Btu is relatively constant for a given seam, resulting in the whole calorific value being a function of the moisture and ash levels (Leonard, 1979).

"Geologic structure and properties are the primary influences on ground control at San Juan Mine. Geotechnical properties of the coal seam and near seam strata, the presence of above seam sandstone paleochannels and water, are thought to be the leading contributors to ground control issues. It is the confluence of specific geologic conditions rather than isolated features that most often produce adverse conditions. Altering primary support installation and mining practices are done when unfavorable conditions appear during development. Installation of standing support is most often employed when adverse conditions develop at later dates. REGIONAL GEOLOGIC SETTING San Juan Mine is an underground coal mine located on the western flank of the San Juan Basin in northwest New Mexico. The San Juan Basin is contained within the south eastern region of the Colorado Plateau geographic province. The basin contains multiple coal bearing formations and is also a major producer of coalbed methane gas. San Juan Mine is stratigraphically located within the Fruitland Formation. From a prominent monocline marking the western boundary of the basin, the formation dips gently to the east towards the center of the basin. The primary driver for the deposition of coal bearing formations within the basin was the Cretaceous Inland Seaway. Multiple cycles of transgression and regression driven by sea level rise and tectonic subsidence deposited rock types from marine shale’s to terrestrial sandstones. The Sevier Mountains to the west of the seaway likely provided the sediment supply for the Fruitland Formation. During a major cycle of seaward regression, the Pictured Cliffs Sandstone Formation prograded over the marine Lewis Shale. The coal bearing Fruitland Formation followed, being deposited over the Pictured Cliffs. The Fruitland Formation contains numerous coal seams and is approximately 400 ft. thick at San Juan Mine. Fruitland Formation coal seams are numbered in order of superposition. San Juan mines the Fruitland number 8 seam. Dating has placed the age of the seam at approximately 73 to 75 million years [1]. LOCAL GEOLOGIC SETTING The Fruitland 8 coal seam dips approximately 1-3 degrees towards the E-NE. At San Juan Mine, the seam displays a mild plunging, synclinal structure, the axis roughly bisecting the mine from west to east. The number 8 seam consists of five coal benches and four volcanic ash band partings labeled sequentially based on superposition. The lowest portion of the seam is the 8-1 bench, the 8-2 through 8-5 benches following sequentially to the top of the minable seam. Ash band partings are labelled P1 through P4 from bottom to top respectively. The presence of distinctive partings and benches allows for seam definition and aids in identifying mining horizons."

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. Some safety measures adopted by-the principal operating company in the field during the past 30 years of mechanized mining follow: Use of only permissible electrical or compressed-air-operated equipment on other than intake air; providing and using an explosion gallery to test repaired permissible electrical equipment before taking it underground; use of only compressed-air-operated drill augers in preference to permissible

It is well known that the chemical environment determines the success of the flotation process, however its characterization and control is difficult to achieve. This work evaluates the use of various measurements, including mineral potential measurements, in gaining an understanding of the influence of varying parameters such as the milling media and the reagent suite composition on the flotation performance of a platinum group metal (PGM) bearing ore. The results showed differences in the response of the various mineral electrodes to the different conditions, however the changes in flotation performance of the different minerals in the ore could not be wholly described by the electrochemical changes, demonstrating the limitations of these measurements.

Four counties in Indiana--LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland--have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or are near high population areas and have no surface-minable limestone de- posits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Minable seams suitable for aggregate are 120 to 150 meters (400 to 500 feet) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 meters (300 feet) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 meters (2,000 feet) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. Groundwater flow in bedrock units is an important factor to be considered for most mining situations, both underground and open pit excavations. Characterization of the hydrogeologic system into which a mine will advance is an important factor for slope and entry stability, mine dewatering design, and potential environmental considerations including stream loss and water well damage. In addition, hydrogeologic characterization of bedrock is important for locating water wells and for groundwater contamination mitigation. Hydrogeologic characterization for a site begins with a desktop study and often evolves to include drilling, geologic logging, monitoring well installation, groundwater sampling, pump testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. In addition to these methods of hydrogeologic data collection, downhole geophysical logging of exploration and monitoring well boreholes provides detailed information associated specifically with in-situ conditions of each hole. The basic suite of geophysical logging tools used for hydrogeologic characterization often includes Optical or Acoustic Televiewer (O/ATV), full wave sonic, gamma-density, fluid temperature, resistivity, specific conductance, and flowmeter. For many hydrogeologic settings, groundwater flow in the bedrock is dominated by discontinuities, or fractures, in the rock. O/ATV logging allows for determination of the frequency (clustering), orientation, and aperture width of in-situ fractures, while sonic logging allows for estimation of intact rock strength. Fluid temperature logging and flowmeter measurements provide insight with regard to potential groundwater inflow zones, and other tools provide information for geologic unit contacts. This paper outlines the process and benefits of using downhole geophysical logging for hydrogeologic characterization and provides generalized examples from industry experience.

The employment of continuous rotary vacuum disc filters to filter refuse from the fine coal washing circuits has been increasing as it has become more important to close the water circuits and eliminate sludge holding ponds. This paper will discuss our past experience filtering refuse, effects of solids concentration in the filter feed, use of polymer flocculation aids, effect of flocculation devices, and effects of particle size and ash content on the filtration rate. Detailed tests were performed on existing installations utilizing coal refuse filters to determine optimum flocculant dosage, solids concentration, and disc rotation speed to form a dischargeable cake. Information was also obtained showing effect of flocculant addition on the moisture of the filter cake. Our test work has shown that the continuous filtration dry cake rates for fine coal refuse correlates very well with the data developed and presented by Silverblatt and Dahlstrom1 except that the curves have moved up the scale by use of polymer flocculant additions. These polymers were not available at that writing. Finally, our tests also confirmed the general premise stated by S. K. Mishra2 that controlled additions of polymer flocculants will reduce filter refuse cake moistures somewhat.

The G2 real-time expert system, a commercial product since 1988, is widely deployed in process, manufacturing and other industries. A number of innovative applications are installed or under development in the mining and metallurgical industries. These include: ? A chemical reagent control system for a mineral concentrator, at a mining company; ? A supervisory control system for a product dryer, at a surface coal mine ? A training system for equipment operators, at a steel mill; ? A scheduling system for furnaces at a hot rolling mill; ? A simulation system for mining operations; ? Several graduate-level research projects in materials handling at a university Realized and projected benefits will be discussed. In addition certain applications installed or under development in other industries will be proposed as applicable in mining and metallurgy. For example, applications for the management of vehicular traffic may find use in mining and shipping.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. This paper focuses on the KRS Algorithms that extract key information from lists of time study type event sequences. Because a static system cannot operate effectively in a dynamic mining environment, we are prototyping an index based technique that allows the system to adapt itself to this dynamic environment.

Storm King Mines began with the concept that the resource potential of thick and steeply pitching seams of the Grand Hogback region of Colorado could be mined profitably. Two large tracts of private land (fee coal) were acquired; approximately 23.8 km2 near Glenwood and 16.2 km2 near Meeker. Figure 1. Although both properties have substantial coal reserves, one has several distinct advantages in developing a competitive mining operation. Table 1 illustrates these advantages. Among the most important considerations from an economical point of view are proximity to railroad, highway, labor force, quality of coal, seam thickness, and source of water. As can be seen, Storm King Mines' property is adjacent to the main line of the D & RGW Railroad, 1-70, and the Colorado River. The cities of New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Carbondale, and Parachute are within short commuting distances and have available skilled labor.

In 1986 the city of Johannesburg celebrates its first century of existence. The fact that the city was founded to exploit the gold deposits which underlaid it, prompts this review of the gold process development in the mining industry of South Africa. Clearly a complete history of, the gold recovery process to date is not called for and it is proposed therefore to outline the most significant developments which have taken place since the middle 1930's, that is to say the last 50 years or so. Prior to this period the industry had seen the development of comminution processes employing cone crushing in closed circuit with vibrating screens followed by grinding in rotating mills and the gradual disappearance of stamp mills. The all sliming process was well established as a viable route and continuous dewatering in thickeners, continuous leaching and filtration were serious rivals for the earlier batch processes. Continuous processes for gravity concentration had also been developed and the recovery of gold from pregnant solutions employed cementation on zinc dust as opposed to shavings. Thus at the beginning of the half century under review the industry had adopted, or started to adopt, many of the processes still accepted as modern practice. However in some areas little change was evident this was especially so in the smelthouse where some thirty more years were to elapse before the hand stoked coal fired calcine and reverbatory furnaces were replaced by more environmentally acceptable electric furnaces. The most significant feature in recent history has been the mining of progressively lower grades of ore and the retreatment of tailings from earlier operations, much of the latter comprising tailings only a decade or even less in age. Notable among these operations are those on the East Rand near Springs in the Transvaal, in the Orange Free State at Welkom and more recently, massive reclamation of tailings close to the city centre itself. The carbon in pulp (CIP) process has been much publicised in recent years and all new plants erected during the 1980's have adopted this route for gold recovery. However the major proportion of tonnage milled in the industry is still subjected to the more traditional process of liquid solids separation by vacuum filtration. Selective adsorption and surface modification of minerals by surfactants is the primary step in the process of separating certain minerals with similar physical and chemical characteristics in the flotation process. In this study, microorgan- isms are used as surface modifiers for francolite and dolomite. Results of adsorption experiments with francolite and dolomite show that the microbes selectively adsorb to one of the minerals under specific operating conditions. In preliminary flotation experiments, it is found that the microorganisms enhance or depress flotation of the minerals leading to an increase in the efficiency of separation between the francolite and dolomite. The conditions leading to selective adsorption (surface modification) and subsequently to possible efficient separation of these two minerals are discussed in this paper.

Use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments will be reviewed, giving specifications of some past and currently available systems. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations, and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, will be discussed. The remaining challenges to more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking will be identified, and recommendations concerning operating environment capabilities will be detailed. Finally, the ultimate requirements for maintaining system integrity during and following a coal mine emergency will be discussed.

The City of New Haven is planning to construct the Downtown Storm Sewer Infrastructure Improvement project to mitigate on-going stormwater flooding in the Long Wharf District. The proposed project includes a 685 cubic feet per second (cfs) stormwater pump station and a 3,200 linear feet (975 meter) long tunnel segment with an internal diameter of 120-inches (3.05 meters). This paper presents the aspects of the final design and the use of the cloud-based data management software to make better data-informed decisions. The software was used to create a spatially aware database of the subsurface conditions, as well as improve visualization and analysis of the soil properties.

A fluorite ore (51.85 % CaF2) containing high contents of calcite, quartz and iron oxides was upgraded by flotation using a new reagent, oleoyl sarcosine (OS). In addition, quebracho and sodium silicate were used as depressants for calcite and quartz, respectively. The effect of pH, collector and depressants concentrations on grade and recovery was determined with the aim of optimizing the flotation conditions. Application of the two-stage cleaning achieved a concentrate assaying 92.17 % CaF2 with 80.1 % recovery. The Si02 content (0.76 %) was below the required level of 1 % SiO2. The mechanism of interaction between OS and fluorite, as compared to oleic acid, is also elucidated based on the zeta potential measurements.

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a. few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvement's in production mining equipment, mining methods, and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been improved previously, and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effect on production is not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved. The need for a method of analyzing such factors was recognized by the Office of Coal Research. Therefore, in April 1962, under OCR sponsorship, a. research project was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objective of the project was to identify the factors which influence mining costs in the immediate production area, and to develop methods and techniques which will enable the coal operator to minimize production costs. The objective of the research at VPI has been successful, and techniques have been developed for establishing quantitative facts concerning the interrelationships of production activities.
