"Phosphate beneficiation in Florida generates more than one tonne of phosphatic clay, or slime, per tonne of phosphate rock produced. Since the start of the practice of large-scale washing and desliming for phosphate beneficiation, more than 2 Gt of slime has accumulated, containing approximately 600 Mt of phosphate rock, 600 kt of rare earth elements (REEs) and 80 million kilograms of uranium. The recovery of these valuable elements from the phosphatic clay is one of the most challenging endeavors in mineral processing, because the clay is extremely dilute, with an average solids concentration of 3 percent, and fine in size, with more than 50 percent having particle size smaller than 2 µm, and it contains nearly 50 percent clay minerals as well as large amounts of magnesium, iron and aluminum. With industry support and under funding from the Critical Materials Institute, the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute in conjunction with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory undertook the task to recover phosphorus, rare earths and uranium from Florida phosphatic clay. This paper presents the results from the preliminary testing of two approaches. The first approach involves three-stage cycloning using cyclones with diameters of 12.4 cm (5 in.), 5.08 cm (2 in.) and 2.54 cm (1 in.), respectively, to remove clay minerals followed by flotation and leaching. The second approach is a two-step leaching process. In the first step, selective leaching was conducted to remove magnesium, thus allowing the production of phosphoric acid suitable for the manufacture of diammonium phosphate (DAP) in the second leaching step. The results showed that multistage cycloning with small cyclones is necessary to remove clay minerals. Selective leaching at about pH 3.2 using sulfuric acid was found to be effective for removing more than 80 percent of magnesium from the feed with minimal loss of phosphorus.IntroductionFlorida phosphate ore, or “matrix,” as it is called locally, contains three different mineral groups that have to be separated from each other: (1) phosphate minerals, (2) clay minerals and (3) quartz, or sand. As mined, the phosphate and sand particles are embedded in compacted mud, or clay-balls. Before separation can begin, all of the particles must be liberated from the matrix of mud. The very first unit operation in the beneficiation process is to disaggregate the various particles. This actually starts while the matrix is flowing through the multimile pipeline from the mine to the beneficiation plant. While in the pipeline, the matrix is exposed to shear forces as it passes through the various centrifugal pumps along the pipeline. These intense shear forces cause a significant percentage of the sand and phosphate particles to be liberated from the clay-balls by the time they arrive at the plant. Once they reach the plant, the first goal is to finish disaggregating the clay, and follow that by making a size separation at 1 mm. This processing is conducted in the washer, consisting of a large rotating trammel screen and a few stages of log washer, screens and hydrocyclones. In all of the currently operating beneficiation plants, the washer is a large structure that receives the matrix, screens it and then discharges a pebble phosphate product sized larger than 1.0 mm and a slurry of liberated clay, sand and phosphate particles that are smaller than 1.0 mm."

The continuous balling? operation whereby a moist particulate mass is tumbled in a horizontal revolving drum with recirculation of the undersize product can be extremely unstable. Product and recycle rates are subject to wide fluctuations. Although the problem seems to be well-recognized, there is little published information or quantitative data readily available, especially in relation to industrial-scale circuits. Probably the best available published results are in the Russian literature, an illustration of which is given in Figure 1. These data, taken from a study') of some of the factors which influence the stabilization of the pelletizing process, illustrate the wide variations in circulating load and circuit productivity which may be encountered over a period of operation. The problems of balling circuit stability may be traced to random seed or nuclei generation and uncontrolled agglomerate growth. The situation is analogous to that in crystallization processes where (4 considerable attention is given to nucleation control. The Brunswick No. 12 Deposit is a large polymetallic massive sulphide deposit, occurring in Ordovician age rocks of the Tetagouche Group. Silver is contained within the sulphide zones and economically it is the second most important commodity produced. Brunswick is one of the largest silver producers in Canada. The distribution of silver within the mine is presented, with examples from various levels. The concentration of silver can be shown to be related to both stratigraphy and structure. The mineralogy of silver in mill products is also presented.

Water infiltration into subgrade infrastructure can cause major impacts on their performance. In addition to damaging the structure, water intrusion leads to deterioration of installations including electrical and mechanical components and in patron discomfort. To remedy these impacts, leak remediation is often carried out to halt water infiltration. Remediation methods include coatings, drainage, injection/stitch grouting, curtain (backside) grouting, and/or internal umbrella systems. Selection of the rehabilitation method depends on the structure’s use, owners’ priorities, its installations, structural conditions, surrounding ground, and hydrogeologic conditions. Since many factors influence the rehabilitation method chosen, a novel holistic approach is undertaken to understand leakage causes and consequences to develop the most appropriate, efficient, and reliable solution to extend the structure’s life. A reconnaissance phase combines geologic, hydrogeologic, and as-built information with detailed digital scans and visual observations to develop a database of existing conditions. This database, called a tunnelband, is used to develop the rehabilitation solution and made part of the contract documents, allowing for an informed bid by specialty contractors. Tunnelband and the preferred rehabilitation system are portrayed in contract documents, which are procured in various contract types depending on the owner’s preference and project characteristics. The pool of contractors are required to submit their understanding of this holistic approach by developing and supplying the owner with a detailed workplan. The completed rehabilitation is portrayed in detailed as-built drawings which also provide the owner with an operation and maintenance manual outlining for periodic observation of the structure and checking of its performance. Ultimately, this information is implemented into a “BIM Digital Twin” that is used by the operations and maintenance staff for long-term observations. This proposed novel framework for leak rehabilitation is currently being used successfully in a number of projects throughout the United States.

The iron ore industry might justifiably claim to have originated the science of geophysical prospecting. Their use of geophysical methods was probably the first application of these scientific techniques to the search for economic materials although the exact origin is undoubtedly lost in the unrecorded observations of. some prospector experimenting with compasses or bits of lodestone. Since 1879 when Thalen published "On the Examination of Iron Ore Deposits by Magnetic Measurements" these methods have been a standard supplement to other prospecting techniques. However, many of the great ore bodies of the Precambrian iron ranges were not particularly suitable for geophysical work. The ores were oxidized and enriched through leaching of silica so that they were nearly non-magnetic and other physical properties which distinguished them from the wall rocks were largely destroyed. With the gradual exhaustion of these high grade direct shipping ores, and ores that could be beneficiated by simple means, the iron ore industry turned initially toward the importation of similar high grade foreign ores. At the same time, new processes for concentrating lower grade materials were being developed and older ones improved upon. These concentrates' when pelletized produced such important savings in blast furnace hot metal costs that they now command a premium in the iron ore market and have weakened the competitive position of the remaining high grade ores. The ore bodies now being sought are usually unoxidized and frequently they are also metamorphosed.

Alaska's Arctic Slope lies between the Brooks Range and Beaufort Sea and is a region about the size of Nebraska. It has some of Alaska's richest hydrocarbon deposits. In addition to containing petroleum and natural gas. Much of the area west from the Colville River has low-sulfur coal deposits which are shallow enough for surface mining. Developing those resources will require a firm and realistic' commitment to protecting and rehabilitating the natural habitats. Balancing such a commitment with economic constraints in a practical sense requires knowledge of the environment and its associated biological components, i.e. the soil/water-plant-animal relationships.

"Lithium is a soft, silver-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35 percent), ceramics and glass (32 percent), lubricating greases (9 percent), air treatment (5 percent), continuous casting mould flux powders (5 percent), polymer production (4 percent), primary aluminum production (1 percent) and other uses (9 percent) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014).In the 1990s, the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced during this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminum industries. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, NV and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, NC. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period, it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994).Lithium is still produced from the brine operations at Silver Peak. But in more recent years, Chile has become the world’s leading producer of lithium carbonate from brines. Australia has maintained its position as the world’s largest producer of lithium mineral concentrate, the majority of which is exported to China to produce lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide (Jaskula, 2014).A spodumene concentrate was also produced at the Tanco Mine in Manitoba, Canada beginning in the 1980s through to 2010 when lithium operations were suspended due to fluctuations in the lithium market price (Martins et al., 2013)."

On September 13, 1973 MAPCO Inc. leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation an 18,000 acre tract of coal lands in Eastern Kentucky's Martin County (See Figure 1.). In July, 1974 initial run of mine coal shipments commenced and in April, 1976 shipments of a 12,500 BTU, less than 1% sulphur, washed coal was being shipped. Results of exploration demonstrated that large quantities of overburden would have to be moved. MAPCO decided to invest in large surface mining equipment to tackle the job.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

Lime and limestone-based SO2 scrubbing processes have demonstrated reasonably good success in removing low concentrations of SO2 from flue gases. While most of the operating problems experienced in the early days of scrubbing have been worked out, problems usually increase and removal efficiency drops with increased amounts of SO2 present in the gas stream. In order to overcome these difficulties, yet still taking advantage of lime and limestone as the lowest cost neutralizing agents, a host of so-called double- alkali systems were developed. These processes take advantage of cations such as Na+ and NH4+ capable of forming highly water soluble bases or basic salts, such as hydroxide, carbonate or sulfite, which having been neutralized or acidified by the absorbed SO2 can be regenerated with a lower cost base such as lime.

According to the Balandin's (1) "multiplet theory of catalysis", adsorption can occur only if atoms of the reactant molecules are congruent with surface atoms of the catalyst. Such a condition calls for certain definite geometrical relationships between the reactant molecules and the atoms at the surface of the catalyst. If such a match or geometrical 'fit' is not provided, the surface reaction will not take place. An appropriate analogy to this may be the lock and key theory that enzymes should fit a substrate just as a key fits a lock. Similar geometrical considerations in adsorption studies were made in connection with the flotation of minerals. Gaudin(2) and Gaudin and Preller (3) proposed that if the dimensions of collector ions are in registry with the mineral lattice, an ordered layer of adsorbed species is formed. They explained that the structural fit is one reason for good flotation of galena with xanthate. In another study, Bachmann (4) attributed the selective flotation of KC1 from NaCl with amine to the fact that the lattice parameter of the amine collector is closer to that of KC1. Schubert(5) investigated the flotation of various nonmetallic minerals with amine and pyridine, and related the dimensions of the collector ions with the anion distances of the mineral surface. He concluded that good flotation is obtained when the tolerance is within 20%. The geometrical theory has also been used by Groszek (6) to explain the preferential adsorption of n-paraffin onto the basal plane of graphite. The geometrical theory has thus been found useful in explaining adsorptive properties of an adsorbate relative to the substrate structure. The purpose of the present work is to examine the possibilities of a geometrical fit between sodium dodecyl sulfate and Cu(OH)2 surface, and to construct a crystallographic model of the surface compound.

"Getting minerals out of ores is messy, but mineral processors learn to have fun with it. Celebrating the innate joys of the industry was the theme of this year’s Colorado MPD Conference. At the same time, attendees dug deeper for insights into problems that continue to dog the community, including tailings dam crises, water resource challenges, and a dwindling number of academics to teach and train the workforce (see box).Tailings dam crisesMatt Fuller of Tierra Group International Ltd. brought some of the audience to tears with his impassioned talk on “The Infamous Legacy of Upstream Tailings Dams,” which won the conference’s Lou Cope award for best paper. The talk was especially poignant coming on the heels of the January tailings dam failure in Vale S.A.’s Córrego do Feijão iron ore mine in Brazil, the latest in a series of catastrophic dam failures over the past decade that includes the Fundão dam failure in 2015.Noting that the two dams share a common characteristic — both are upstream tailing dams — Fuller explained the three basic dam construction methods and why certain upstream tailing dams are susceptible to failure (Fig. 1). The downstream, centerline and upstream methods denote the direction the centerline of the dam crest moves with each successive raise in elevation of the dam. With the downstream dam, the foundation for future raises is essentially the same as that of the starter dam, he explained. With the centerline dam, half of the dam is constructed on the same foundation as the starter dam, and with the upstream dam, each successive raise is built out over the top of the tailings.“Downstream dams are expensive to build because each successive raise is bigger, so the sustaining capex to build them keeps growing,” Fuller said. Many decades ago, mine owners realized they could construct a starter dam, put their tailings through a hydrocyclone, generate a coarse sand fraction and stack the sand over the top of the tailings to build the next raise. “Then, there is no sustaining capex, it all comes out of operations,” Fuller added. The footprint is smaller, and it is a favorable means of retaining the tailings."

Column flotation continues to make inroads into applications traditionally dominated by mechanical flotation cells. For example, columns are becoming more visible as rougher flotation devices. At Royal Mountain King Mine in California, two 2.9 m (9.5 ft) diameter columns are used for rougher flotation of carbon from a gold ore (Orlich et al, 1992). In addition, work performed at BRGM in France demonstrated the superiority of column flotation over mechanical flotation with respect to design of new plants (Morizot et al, 1991). With the mounting evidence, columns can succeed in any flotation application. The primary reasons for this acceptance of columns are a general improvement in design, scale-up and operation as well as improvements in sparger design and performance. With these advances, the full benefits of column flotation can be realized. The benefits of properly designed, aerated and operated flotation columns include: ? Lower Capital Costs ? Usually stresses generated by explosive charges during blasting are considered to propagate through materials in a spherical manner. Although conical stress-waves had been suggested by a few investigators they have never been clearly defined or critically observed. An experimental technique using models and lengths of Mild Detonating Fuse was developed to produce conical stress-waves and study their effects. Several materials with different properties were tested to compare the influence of those properties on wave shape and crater formation. The investigations showed that whenever column charges were end-initiated, conical stress-forms were produced if the explosive's velocity exceeded the energy propagation velocity of the surrounding material. The stress-cone angle significantly affected fragment size and shape as well as the geometry of craters produced.

The mining industry has seen a flurry of merger and acquisition activity of late. Rising metal prices, increased spending on infrastructure in developing nations and the growing demand for companies to diversify have helped fuel M&A activity in this industry. Many analysts believe that the robust M&A activity will continue, particularly if the demand for mineral resources in India and China remains strong. Because prospective purchasers need to evaluate the various risks confronting target companies, acquiring mining companies requires a considerable amount of due diligence. Of these risks, environmental risk is critical and warrants significant analysis. The failure to properly assess environmental risks associated with remediation, reclamation, compliance or litigation can undermine the transaction. Such assessment is a difficult endeavor, however, due to several challenges that companies face when assessing environmental risks. To make matters more complicated, despite these challenges, many sellers ask buyers to assume all environmental risks with limited post-closing indemnification rights. This article addresses the most significant issues that commonly arise when conducting environmental due diligence and allocating environmental risk in connection with M&A transactions in the mining industry.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. Joy Mining Machinery has developed a new generation of ultra-heavy shields for Anglo Coal Australia?s Moranbah North Mine in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland. These are the largest two-leg longwall shields yet produced by Joy. The longwall at Moranbah North posed a number of challenges, among them a thick, inclined, sometimes undulating seam with increasing depths. The result of this was the need for larger, heavier, more powerful roof supports. Knowing that future longwalls would be going deeper, mine management determined that shield yield ratings of at least 1,750 t (1,930 st) was what would be required.

This paper proposes a hydromechanically coupled numerical modeling approach to quantify the influence of various parameters on the mechanical and hydraulic performance of protective water barrier pillars (PWBP). The results are validated for two case studies having pillar widths of 16 and 42 m at cover depths of 136 and 190 m and water heads of 25 and 141 m. The outcome can be significantly helpful in the rational design of these pillars in underground coal mines.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pHs without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35% to 38% P2O5, 0.8% to 1% MgO) with high recoveries (80% to 85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P2O5 and 0.8% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 76%. A concentrate obtained from the western US phosphate ore from Utah assayed 30% P2O5 and about 1% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 89%.

In situ or pre-mining horizontal stresses are arguably the least well understood of the principal inputs into underground coal mining geotechnical engineering design, whether analytical, empirical, or numerical. This is a direct result of both the cost and difficulty of obtaining meaningful stress measurements, the various limitations of the measurement method in terms of sourcing strata types that approximate the assumed conditions of the post-measurement mathematics to convert measured strains into stresses, and a common practice by some geotechnical professionals to preferentially utilise generic values rather than interrogate the available measurement data for cause and effect relationships between horizontal stress magnitudes, directions and a range of associated controls. That numerical modelling simulations attempt to mimic reality but often rely on simplified generic horizontal stress input assumptions is a particular cause for further consideratio The paper attempts to further explore the nature of in situ horizontal stresses using a range of stress measurement results from the Australian coal sector supplemented by several international studies addressing the same basic issue, the result being a number of credible and highly relevant “cause and effect" inter-relationships between the three principal in situ stresses in addition to the influence of rock properties (e. Young's Modulus and Poisson's Ratio), cover depth and the larger-scale structural geological environment. In particular, the paper demonstrates that despite being commonly overlooked as a primary rock/coal material property, Poisson's Ratio and the associated K Effect are intrinsic to understanding 3D in situ stress measurement results and therefore, predicting in situ stress magni- tudes more generally for geotechnical analyses purposes. As a fundamental question, the paper addresses whether it is necessary and of engineering value to characterise in situ horizontal stresses: according to distinct "domains," in the same way that more easily identifiable geotechnical properties such as rock mass ratings, coal seam thickness, ply splits, and cover depth are often treated.
