The authors discuss the cooperative efforts by Minnesota Ore. Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.

Whisker growth during the reduction of iron ores The phenomenon of whisker growth can be observed in a number of solid-state crystallisation reactions, which, apparently, appear in6 the first instance as though they are two independent processes. From such reactions, one can find the whisker type of crystallisation on solid bodies. These examples show, that the whisker growth is neither due to certain crystal forms with predetermined temperature and pressureranges, nor to parameters, which, ad hoc, are necessary for the crystallisation. In all cases the whisker formation seems to depend on nucleation and the availability of crystallizing material in direct environment of such a nucleus, under given parameters of a system. One can generally state, that the research of whisker growth with the aim of establishing proper physical laws, to determine the foundamentals of whisker formation and whisker growth, is at present under active study. We can conclude that, although a great number of hypothesis have been proposed; no concluding theory has yet been arrived at. In the institute for ferrous metallurgy of the technical university of Aachen, research works are undertaken to find an explination to various metallurgical phenomena through help of whisker growth which was observed under varying conditions of iron ore reduction. This was possible by using refined microscopic techniques through which the whisker growth on solid oxyde substrates is detected. This refined technique combines the latest methods of surface examination with the help of stereo-scan-electron-microscope and proper and carefull preparation of surface to be stereo-scanned.

This map shows general trends of the chloride concentration of water in the upper part of the Floridan aquifer. Below this part of the aquifer, high chloride water can be found everywhere in the State. The accompanying cross section shows the depth to salty water across central Florida. In the center of Florida, fresh water may be found as deep as 2.000 feet, whereas, along the coast it may extend no deeper than about 200 feet. Chloride concentration in small local areas may deviate from the values represented on both the cross section and the main map. A parametric study was conducted to establish the optimum operating conditions for the column flotation of fine coal. The parameters examined in this investigation included collector and frother dosages, feed solids content, and the volumetric flow rates of feed slurry, air and wash water. Despite the wide range of conditions studied the experimental data were found to fall along single grade-recovery curves, just below the maximum separation predicted by the release analysis technique. The deviation of the parametric test data from the release curve was attributed to the nonselective entrainment of mineral matter associated with poor froth washing. The operating point on the characteristic recovery-grade curve was found to be primarily determined by feed rate and aeration rate.

Sound Transit’s ST3 program will add 62 miles of light rail to the Puget Sound area, including connections to the neighborhoods of West Seattle currently anticipated by 2031 and Ballard by 2036. These connections include considerations for both elevated and tunnel alternatives, as well as a new downtown tunnel for which different configurations are being considered with potentially very different construction logistics and risk profiles. This paper describes the latest developments in the ongoing evaluation process that will inform the consideration of different tunnel and station construction methods, technical and operational challenges and contracting methodologies, including construction of deep stations in dense urban environments.

Abstract. Gulf Coast Salt Domes are being considered for radioactive waste disposal and this paper describes the geophysical techniques currently being used and those being considered for later phases of the program. Detailed gravity work utilizing a modification of the Talwani-Ewing modeling technique, shallow high resolution reflection seismic surveys using the mini-sosie concept, surface electrical resistivity and down-hole geophysical logging to add a third dimension to all of the surface techniques and to allow inverse modeling of the surface data sets are being utilized. The logic of the combined geophysical surveys will be discussed as well as their relative economics and their relationship to the overall exploration effort.

Energy-producing states see severance taxes as attractive sources of increased revenues for otherwise tight budgets. Consumers in energy-poor states, however, protest that current rates are excessive and have moved to obtain a reduction. The US Supreme Court heard two cases questioning such taxes during its 1981 term, and Congress, in each of its last two sessions, has seriously considered measures placing a ceiling on severance tax rates. Although discussions usually focus on coal severance taxes levied by Montana and Wyoming, ramifications of changes in national policy are much larger, potentially affecting mineral taxes in all states. Severance taxes yield substantial revenues in some states, as illustrated in the accompanying table. In fiscal 1980, Texas collected more than $1.5 billion from such taxes, while Louisiana, Alaska, and Oklahoma collected $525 million, $507 million, and $436 million, respectively. Oil and natural gas production were the major items taxed. While the table shows only the 10 states with the largest severance tax collections, a total of 17 states had severance tax receipts exceeding $10 million in 1980. The enormous increases in severance tax revenue between 1970 and 1980 can be seen from the table by comparing columns A and B. For the 10 states shown, revenues increased from $650 million to $3.8 billion during that period, due to a combination of higher prices, increased production, and new or increased taxes. In most states, increases in prices and production were more evident than higher tax rates. Although the revenue increase is impressive, it understates the extent of changes occurring during the past decade. Since tax collections are shown for fiscal 1980, the full impact of the decontrol of domestic oil prices is not evident. Also, taxes on natural gas reflect controlled prices. When full de-control of natural gas occurs, significantly higher revenues can be expected in gas-producing states, even if tax rates, production, and world prices remain constant. These increases in severance tax revenues, coupled with further increases expected to accompany natural gas decontrol, have produced fears that a substantial transfer of income is taking place from residents of energy-poor states to those living in energy-rich areas. Others worry that increased severance tax revenues will be used to substitute for a substantial portion of state taxes that would have otherwise been collected from firms and individuals. The resulting improvements in tax climate, it is thought, may encourage firms and workers to migrate to energy-producing states. While these issues are often portrayed as pitting energy have-nots against the haves, such is not entirely the case. Much of the original impetus for limits on coal taxes came from Texas residents, the state collecting the most severance tax revenue. One way of gaining perspective on these concerns is by examining severance taxes per capita and as a percent of state tax collections (see columns C and D in the table). When this is done, Alaska, where 1980 taxes on oil and gas production totaled more than $1300 per capita (and 35% of all state tax collections), stands out as a special case. There, the state was able to eliminate some individual taxes, place revenues in a permanent trust fund, and consider offering a rebate of some previous income

The paper contains a subsidence measurement taken over a room and pillar panel of a mine located in northern West Virginia. A total of 72 monuments were used to determine a three dimensional view of mine subsidence. In addition, the results of measurements were used to compute ground strains with the use of a numerical model.

The potential for recovery of enriched uranium from spent nuclear fuel which has been consolidated into a nuclear waste form was explored in the studies reported here. The waste form of interest is iron-enriched basalt (IEB)--a silicate-based, fused-cast ceramic. IEB samples were prepared containing fuel assembly materials that simulate the core debris of Three Mile Island Unit II;1,2 the nominal composition of the consolidated waste form is given in Table 1. Ore Types The IEB samples, or man-made uranium ores (MMUO), are in two different mineralogical forms. Each MU0 was made by melting the constituent materials and holding at about 1500°C for 1 h. The MMUOs were then heat treated to control crystallization and crystal growth and then cooled to room temperature.

Oriented borehole data provide the means to characterize a rock mass. In this paper, the geomechanical caving potential of a hard rock mine project is investigated. In particular, the influence of random joints to the resulting block size distributions is addressed. The implications of this approach in preliminary investigations on the choice of mining methods are discussed with reference to one site.

Introduction Given the mountainous nature of the local igneous terrain, hard rock tunnelling plays an important role in the development of Hong Kong's infrastructure. In 1990, tenderers for two tunnel projects were encouraged to consider using hard rock TBMs, the territories' first. As a result the 7.5km long, 3.56m diameter Tolo Effluent Tunnel and the 5.3km long, 4.8m diameter Hong Kong Electric Cable Tunnel were excavated by hard rock TBMs. The successful completion of both projects in 1992 should make the TBM method an attractive construction alternative for planned, upcoming projects in Hong Kong. Tunnelling Conditions Tunnelling solutions are frequently adopted in Hong Kong due to the intensity of development, lack of flat landscape and proximity of mountainous terrain to the main centers of population. This is carried out primarily in granites or granitic-type rocks which surround Victoria harbour, and to a lesser extent in the outlying volcanic rocks which include extremely hard tuffs and lavas. Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when an energy efficiency is calculated from Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

Comminution is a unit operation which consumes major part of energy in mineral processing industries such as fertilizer production. Ball mills are widely used for size reduction of a given ore to the liberation size that is required in further beneficiation processes. In grinding of materials much effort is concentrated on control of top size of the product and this results in production of fines, also creates secondary problems of pollution due to the difficulty in the collection of fine particles. The present work has been carried out to control product size distribution for rock phosphate grinding in an Industrial Ball Mill of 600 TPD. The plant data are taken for a given feed distribution and mill operating conditions. The information at various Ball Size distributions are collected. The comminution functions such as specific rate of breakage and breakage distribution functions are estimated by back calculation technique to solve the mass balance equation. A simulation program is written to study the product size distribution obtained for various ball size distribution.

To generate a most profitable ultimate pit limit is generally the first step in mine design. This paper presents a new graph theory oriented, optimum ultimate pit limit design algorithm which will maximize the total undiscounted net profit. This algorithm performs much better than the well known Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm, in terms of the reduction in computation time and computer memory requirements. This algorithm operates on many directed trees in a graph, where each vertex in a tree represents a block in the mine model. The formation of each directed tree is based more on the ore-waste support concept than the geometry constraints alone. The general procedures of the algorithm, programming considerations and two case study results are discussed in the paper.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. A case study describing the expansion of Marion County landfill is presented. The exapansion area is located on a deep mined area. Finite element analyses were used to predict the surface subsidence and associated tensile strains on the landfill liner of the expansion site. A synthetically reinforced liner system is recommended to minimize the impact of the subsurface movements on the integrity of the liner system.

The replacement of Boston’s elevated Highway I-93 running north to south through the heart of the city with 8-lane tunneled roadways, coupled with the underground extension of Highway I-90 eastward to Logan Airport, has earned the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project the position of the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. today. The gigantic interchange featuring numerous ramps where these two main branches of the Artery intersect required the construction of three huge jacked tunnel boxes that were pushed beneath eight active Amtrak and commuter rail tracks that had to remain undisturbed in spite of poor geology and a minimum of cover between the track beds and the tunnel crowns. Ground freezing was chosen as the method of stabilizing the soil over the tunnels, and it was extended in one area to stabilize the ground at the intersection between the tunnels and an abutting deep cut-and-cover excavation. Because many standard geotechnical instruments consist basically of open standpipes filled with water, it was a major challenge to keep them de-iced and in a condition to provide data on vertical and lateral ground movements. The efforts to do so are herein described.

The Henderson Coarse Ore Conveying System is a three flight belt conveyor system transporting primary crushed molybdenum ore 24 km (15 miles) underneath the North American Continental Divide. One of the conveyors is 16.8 km (55,200fi) in length with 8,200 kW (11,000 HP) of installed power. The overland conveyor contains 11 vertical curves and 9 horizontal curves, some with radii as small as 1,500 m. he system began full operation in December 1999 and is one of the longest and most complicated belt conveyor systems yet constructed. he design of this conveyor system utilized many innovative engineering concepts including low-energy belt covers, low-resistance idlers, torque-controlled tail drives, combined gravity and active winch take-up systems, small radius horizontal curves and belt turnovers. his paper reviews the start-up of the system, discusses the success of the design and addresses the lessons that can be learned from the first 4 years of operation of this unique conveyor system
