The name Perlite applies to both a hydrated volcanic glass containing from 2% to 5% combined water and to the lightweight material that is produced from expanding the sized volcanic glass. Upon heating, Perlite expands to about twenty times its original volume which results in a material of low density, low thermal conductivity, and high sound absorpt'ion. Perlite ore is mined by open pit methods and is crushed and sized to provide specific gradations for expanding into products used in acoustical tile, built- up roofing, filtration, lightweight concrete and horticultural applications, among others. In 1983, the U.S. production of crude Perlite came from 12 mines and 6 western states, with apparent consumption and production estimated to be about 6% lower than 1982. The average price per ton was slightly higher than in 1982.

Predicting when and at what rate seepage will occur from waste-rock facilities is becoming an integral part of permitting and closure at mines situated in dry climates. Such predictions require development of a conceptual framework that accurately describes how water will percolate through a waste-rock facility. Also needed is a detailed hydrological characterization of the waste-rock facility, including measurement of the hydraulic properties of the waste rock and any potential cover materials. This paper presents a conceptual framework describing unsaturated water flow in a waste-rock facility and describes methods for characterizing the hydrology of a waste-rock facility in a dry climate. The methods are designed to collect site-specific data to support accurate and defensible predictions of long-term seepage rates.

"Diesel engines are one of the primary contributors to the presence of nano and ultrafine aerosols in ambient air and occupational environments. Exposure to diesel emissions has been shown to contribute to various adverse health outcomes of the pulmonary system and cardiovascular system. Currently diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by way of collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a lab for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH 5040 method, which measures elemental and organic carbon explicitly. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) before the problem is identified. To remedy this, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are seeking to develop a field-portable method for measuring elemental and organic carbon in DPM aerosols. In the current study, we investigated the use of Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, which lends itself more readily to implementation in a real-time system than do the thermal-optical analysis methods. We have demonstrated a method for measuring organic and elemental carbon in DPM for a broad range of organic carbon (OC) to elemental carbon (EC) ratios (from 50.3 to 0.8). The ability to handle a wide range of OC to EC ratios is critical given the evolving diesel technology. INTRODUCTION Respiratory illnesses are common in mining industry workers [1] and exposures to toxic aerosols such as DPM can result in serious respiratory illness [2]. Health studies show a correlation between workplace exposure to diesel exhaust and an increased risk of lung cancer [3-8]. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has characterized diesel exhaust as a human carcinogen [9], and similar classifications have been made by the World Health Organization and the California Air Resource Board. A recent study [10] suggests that the risk of lung cancer is approximately three times greater for heavily exposed workers. When compared to other aerosols in the mine environment, the settling time of DPM is significantly longer than that of dust due to their small particle size (typically < 1 µm) [11]. Additionally, submicron particles (such as DPM) are deposited in the lungs much more efficiently than their larger counterparts such as dust [12]. Previous studies focusing on particle morphology [13] show that the largest mass contributor to lung disease in mining is elemental carbon, which provides a solid core onto which hydrocarbons are adsorbed. In accord with those findings the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) decided on submicron total carbon as a surrogate for monitoring diesel particulate matter in the mining environment."

The flotation behavior of a -28 mesh Pittsburgh No. 8 coal sample is investigated through the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy in conjunction with Image Analysis. Release analysis is used to generate the flotation products, which are then characterized to provide the particulate composition in terms of pyrite, mineral matter and carbonaceous material. The results of this investigation indicate that the material recovered in the first stage of release analysis tends to be well-liberated carbonaceous material. This is followed by an increase in the recovery of middlings and fines in the later stages of the process. Any free carbonaceous material remaining in the tailings from the release analysis test tends to be associated with the very fine sizes (-400 mesh). Pyrite recovery is attributed to the hydrophobicity provided by small inclusions of carbonaceous material, since the amount of truly liberated pyrite particles (i.e., 100% pyrite) present in the sample is found to be negligible.

[ ] Economic marbles are investigated in regionally such as Orhangazi, Elmali, Menek?eyayla, Sapanca, Pamukova and they are seperated approximately 800 km2 (Figure 2). These marbles are massive, thick and dispersed as small sized outcrops in Armutlu Peninsula.

Tailings disposal has been a problem for the mining engineer since the beginning of the metal milling process. Disposal systems in common use have evolved as the most economic method for the disposal of an unwanted waste material within the disposal restrictions in force at the time of construction. As restrictions are constantly being expanded, the design requirements for tailings disposal systems are also being enlarged. However, proper design will always be to provide the most economic disposal system that will meet current safety and pollution requirements. This paper presents a brief description of some of the design features of tailings disposal systems in common use and presents specific design features of the gypsum tailings disposal pond at Kimberley, British Columbia, owned and operated by Cominco Ltd.

The purpose of the 3DOPT Program is to determine, starting from drill hole data, the optimum economic mining limits for an open pit. The economic limits are defined as those which maximize total profit, i. e. total mineral value mined less the total mining and milling costs, subject to the restriction imposed by the pit slopes. To accomplish this, the program employs the following: (1) A three dimensional matrix of equal sized blocks in order to file the engineering data and the cost/value data required to develop the profit figure for each block of ore/waste. (2) A graph algorithm developed specifically for optimizing these profits.1

This paper addresses the valuation and development timing of an undeveloped mineral project. Traditional analysis has us developing the project immediately if its net present value (NPV) is positive. Option pricing theory finds that it is better to wait until the NPV of the property is significantly greater than zero before developing. Alternatively, when evaluating the development timing decision, we must calculate NPV using a higher "timing-adjusted" discount rate, and develop the property only if its NPV using this timing-adjusted discount rate is greater than zero. This paper uses option pricing ideas to convert this development timing advice into a more concrete and user-friendly decision rule: develop the project when its "development-timing NPV" is positive, this development-timing NPV being calculated using the normal discount rate.

The Barneys Canyon orebody is a sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit located 8 km (5 miles) north of the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine. Mineable oxide reserves are 8.6 million tonnes (9.5 million short tons) grading 1.64 g/tonne (0.048 oz/ton) gold. Host lithologies are carbonates and siliciclastics of the Park City and Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formations of Lower Permian age. Gold distributions are controlled by favorable stratigraphic units and associated alteration, and structures. Dominant alteration is decalcification and bleaching of carbonates, and argillization and bleaching of sandstones. Gold to silver ratios are greater than 1:1. Anomalous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium. The Melco deposit lies 2.4 km (1.5 miles) southwest of the Barneys Canyon deposit. It is spatially associated with a steeply northwest-dipping siliciclastic breccia in the Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formation at the contact with underlying orthoquartzites of the Freeman Peak Formation. Both gold-bearing oxidized and sulfide lithologies are present, often in sharp contact. Mineable oxide reserves are 2.8 million tonnes (3.1 million short tons) grading 2.40 g/tonne (0.07 oz/ton) gold. Anomolous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium, which are generally present in concentrations greater than those at Barneys Canyon, particularly in sulfide-bearing material. A spatial, temporal and genetic relationship is proposed between the Melco deposit and late-stage gold mineralization at Bingham Canyon, although both the Melco and Barneys Canyon deposits have many similarities to Carlin-type gold deposits.

THE PENETRATION RATE BASELINE DILEMMA The penetration rate is the instantaneous advance rate of a TBM in a rock tunnel. Normally expressed in feet per hour. The production rate is the penetration rate multiplied by the number of hours worked and then factored by the actual utilization of the TBM. In a given rock formation, the actual production rate is a result of many factors some of which are within the control of the contractor and some of which are based on the route selected. Factors that are within the contractors control are cutter profile, frequency of cutter changes, thrust, rotation speed, cutter spacing and the efficiency of the operation. Factors that are site (route) specific are compressive strength, fracture orientation, fracture frequency, micro- fracturing, quartz content, Moh’s hardness, Cerchar Abrasivity Brazilian Tensile Strength and Youngs Modulus of the rock. In addition the following route speci?c conditions are beyond the contractors control; rockjointing, rock stress fault zones, water in?ow and rock decomposition; all of which effect production rate. Any one of the above defined rock properties, equipment specifications and actual operating usage will change the penetration rate. Furthermore, since the rock formation changes both in content and orientation as the tunnel advances, the penetration rate is constantly varying. The current industry practice in bidding tunnels is for each contractor to individually evaluate the rock hardness and other properties and from this information develop a penetration rate. All other factors being equal, the contractor using the most optimistic penetration rate will be the low bidder and be awarded the project. As this view is by definition optimistic, invariably the rock will be harder than the low bid assessment and the contractor will request additional compensation for the changed condition. The contractor will attempt to justify his optimistic assessment as reasonable by using expert supporting analysis. The above described example which is quite common at present in the industry tends to make the most optimistic contractor (at time of bidding) the contractor selected for the project whereas it is in the owners interest to contract with the most efficient contractor not the most optimistic. This situation is similar to the Geotechnical analysis that was prevalent in the industry over twenty years ago. Many projects have experienced a significant reduction of penetration rate from that which was originally estimated. In these cases the contractor often makes a claim for extra compensation based on the difference between the actual rock encountered

Rock melting technology can provide in-situ glass liners in nuclear waste package emplacement holes to reduce permeability and increase borehole stability. Reduction of permeability would reduce the time and probability of groundwater contacting the waste packages. In-creasing the stability of the storage boreholes would enhance the retrievability of the nuclear waste packages. The rock melting hole forming technology has already been tested in volcanic tuff similar to the geology at the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

GeoBiotics, LLC and Kumba Resources (Pty) Ltd are jointly developing the GEOCOAT® heap bioleaching technology and downstream processing technology for recovery of zinc from tailings at the Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. This paper outlines the development of a computer simulation for the bioleaching of sphalerite and the downstream processing. Computer modeling has shortened the product development cycle by allowing many flowsheet scenarios to be analyzed negating much of the expensive and time consuming laboratory testing. A model was developed using the Limn® system which is an Excel® Add-In flowsheet drawing and solution engine. Given that most engineers are familiar with Excel® this software is extremely easy to use and has less hidden calculations making model verification much easier.

In Europe and Canada mine roadways are driven mainly by roadheaders. The application of tunnel boring machines to coal mining is somewhat recent. Such machines are however being used on major projects driving main mine entries.

A description of each item of the modules is included along with the problems encountered during development and how they were corrected. The system configuration is also described.

A field representative modeling of the gob behavior is critical for the understanding of the associated mechanics of strata behavior in longwall workings. The findings of theoretical models and laboratory tests on the simulated gob material have shown the strain hardening behavior of the gob material. The double-yield material model, which is a built-in constitutive model in FLAC3D, has significant potential to simulate the gob compaction process as it represents materials which undergo irreversible compaction in addition to shear yielding. Apart from this, several researchers have attempted using modified elastic model or applied nodal force in reaction to the strain in the gob area as per the well-known theoretical relations to meet this requirement. Although these models can simulate the mechanical response of the gob for subcritical and critical extraction widths, they do not apply to supercritical extraction width as the gob stress may exceed the in situ stress level in such cases. For overcoming these limitations, a standard approach has been developed and validated in this paper, which can be used for simulating the gob behavior in supercritical longwall workings as well. The complete study is divided into two stages wherein the laboratory scale compression test on the simulated gob material has been numerically replicated to develop preliminary confidence followed by a parametric study of the double-yield constitutive parameters for a rational estimation of their values in different conditions. The calibrated model has been used for verifying its results by plane strain modeling of two different longwall workings, using well-established empirical and analytical findings and field observations. The approach suggested in this study can be used for the efficient modeling of the gob behavior of longwall panels under varying geo-mining conditions without compromising the accuracy of the numerical model. The meticulously validated model can be helpful in rational estimation of stress redistributions around the gob area apart from load transfer on the barrier pillar.

Wet ground and dry muscovite mica continued to be the most commercially significant types of mica in the US. Canada&apos;s phlogopite mica and some US deposits of sericite mica have also contributed to the overall application of mica in a variety of industries. Mica&apos;s major end uses are paint, rubber, and construction material. Its value was about $30 million last year. The southern Appalachian Mountains weathered granitic bodies and pegmatites continued to be the primary US muscovite mica source. North Carolina production of mica as a coproduct of feldspar, kaolin, and lithium processing accounted for more than 60% of the total output. New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Georgia, and Connecticut accounted for the rest. Flake mica was also produced from mica schists in North Carolina and South Dakota. It is also being investigated in Ontario, Canada. Wet ground mica Wet ground mica was produced by four companies: KMG Minerals, Franklin Mineral Products, J.M. Huber Corp., and Concord Mica. KMG and Franklin Mineral Products accounted for more than 80% of the production. Wet ground mica is a highly delaminated platey powder used to reinforce solvent and aqueous system paints for increased weatherability, durability, and greater resistance to moisture and corrosive atmospheres. In plastics, it is an excellent filler and reinforcing agent, providing better dielectric properties, heat resistance, and added tensile and flexural strength. In the rubber industry, wet ground mica is used as a mold lubricant to manufacture molded rubber products, such as tires. It also acts as an inert filler that reduces gas permeability. Miscellaneous uses include additives to caulking compounds, foundry applications, lubricants, greases, silicone release agents, and dry powder fire extinguishers. Wet ground mica prices range from $353 to $496/t ($320 to $450 per st) fob plant. Specialty products may be higher, depending on customer requirements. Dry ground muscovite mica Dry ground mica was produced by nine companies: KMG Minerals, Unimin, US Gypsum, Mineral Industrial Commodities of America, Spartan Minerals Corp., Asheville Mica Corp., Deneen Mica Co., Pacer Corp., and J.M. Huber Corp. Dry ground mica&apos;s primary market is wallboard joint compound. Here, it is a functional extender that improves the physical properties and finishing characteristics of the mud. It is also used in various grades as a filler in asphalt products, enamels, mastics, cements, plastics, adhesives, texture paints, and plaster. Dry ground mica became popular as an additive in oil well drilling fluids, where the mica flakes platey nature helps seal the well bore, preventing circulating fluid loss. But oil&apos;s dramatic price drop and consequent curtailing of well drilling brought this once booming market to a virtual halt. Forecasters predict that this business will gradually pick up during the next few years and most current dry ground mica producers will again produce the oil well drilling material. Dry ground mica prices range from $110 to $420/t ($100 to $380 per st) fob plant. High quality sericite mica, sometimes referred to as an altered muscovite, was mainly produced by two US companies. Mineral Industrial Commodities of America and Mineral Mining Corp. have equivalent capacities of about 27 kt/a (30,000 stpy). The majority of the material produced was consumed by the joint compound industry. Minor uses are in paint and oil well drilling. The lack of ground sericite penetration into the traditional ground muscovite markets is attributed to high silica content, typically in excess of 20%, and a bulk density. Prices range from $88 to $187/t ($80 to $170 per st) fob plant. Phlogopite mica is a dark colored, magnesium bearing mica rarely found in the US. Suzorite Mica Corp., a division of Lacana Petroleum, mines a deposit in Quebec that is 80% to 90% phlogopite. The dark color has prevented the material&apos;s entry into the traditional paint markets. But the physical properties and high purity make it useful as a low-cost reinforcing filler in many plastics and several asphalt applications. Phlogopite mica is ground to several grades and may be treated with various surface coatings for use in plastics or coated with nickel for EMI/RFI shielding applications. Prices for phlogopite products range from $144 to $580/t ($104 to $580 per st) fob plant. As in recent years, production of domestic muscovite sheet - block, film, and splittings - remained insignificant. These resources are limited and uneconomic due to the high cost of hand labor required to process sheet mica in the US. Imports from India and Brazil were the primary sources of the estimated 1 kt (2.4 million lbs) valued at $2.5 million consumed by US electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers in 1986. The paper presents theoretical and practical aspects of directed adjustment of physicochemical properties (pH,Eh) and ion composition of recycle and mine water by electrochemical treatment. Treatment is run in the conditioners of diaphragm-type with production of alkaline catholyte of pH value up to 12 and acidic anolyte of pH up to 2. In process of water electrolysis the directed motion of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions is observed from anode volume to cathode one, were they precipitate as hydroxides and carbonates; it leads to decrease of salt content in anolyte and catholyte. The anolyte has been concentrating anions, it is being saturated with oxygen, which reaches 20-35 mg/L. The results of experimental and industrial testing of electrochemical technique for mine and recycle water in flotation of diamond-containing and sulphide-scheelite, hematite, phosporite, apatite-nephelite, bauxite ores indicated the increase of recovery up to 2-1 5% and grade up to 0,5-2%, concurrent with decrease of reagent consumption from 15 to 50 %. Modules of industrial conditioners of different type capacity have been developed.

With the growing demand for energy, explora¬tion for uranium deposits has dramatically increased in the past few years. Since the early ages of uranium exploration, natural gamma ray logs has proved fast and convenient in locating and evaluating mineralized bodies. However, natural gamma ray logging is an indirect measure of the uranium content and in some circonstances, the radiometric signal can be &apos;altered in a very significant way. To check the presence of any distortion, statistical comparision of radiometric counts and chemical assay values for the same samples is generally performed. Of course in such studies, one inevitably mixes samples where the radiometric signal is really proportional to the uranium content and samples where this signal is influenced by many other sources or distorted before being recorded. Nevertheless, the average tendency leads to correction factors which are then applied to every radiometric reading in the deposit or portion of the deposit where the statistical comparison is made. To account for the "average" character of these correction factors, a parameter of uncertainty like a standard deviation of possible errors is associated to each corrected value. This parameter can be latter used in an ore reserve estimation when the weights assigned to samples should depend on the precision of their grade. The purpose of this paper is to present a new regression technique which can be used without any restrictive hypothesis like a normal or lognormal distribution. Different standard ways which can be used to statistically compare radiometric and chemical assay values for the same sample and to derive a correction factor for the latter will first be reviewed, after a general discussion of disequilibrium problems. The discussion and the examples will be restricted to the case of natural gamma ray logging in drill holes but the methods presented in this paper can also be applied to data from the radiometric probing of a working face or a truck load in an operating mine.

Ore was first discovered at the Kidd Creek mine site during the first few days of December 1963 when a diamond drill hole there cut sulfide mineralization. This event marked the end of the search started 11 years earlier with the conception of a geological idea. Economic forces provided the stimulus needed for the application of this idea but other-events, and legal considerations, also played arole in delaying the ultimate discovery. The location of Kidd Creek is shown in Fig. 1. Management of the then Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. had become concerned in 1951 at the company&apos;s declining reserves of native sulfur in Texas. This problem was to be alleviated by new discoveries and development of methods to recover sulfur from sour gas. At the time, however, the solution appeared to lie in the recovery of sulfur from pyritic ores. Canada was chosen as the best country in which to find these ores. Walter Holyk was hired in 1951 to conduct the search. By 1952, he was working in the area near Sherbrooke, Quebec, known as the "Eastern Townships" where mineralization consisting of base metal sulfides in volcanic rocks has long been known. His observations here led him to the then revolutionary conclusion that such mineralization could have formed as part of the volcanic process and not, as was generally supposed at the time, by replacement. On learning of the discovery of similar mineralization near Bathurst, NB, he moved there in the spring of 1953. He was able to utilize his new concept and found the Half-Mile Lake sulfide deposit.
