H. P. Ferri I refer to the article "Degradation Process in Coal Slurry Pipelines" by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott in the September 1988 issue of Mining Engineering. I would like to congratulate Dr. Ayat and his colleague on a very interesting and valuable piece of work. This article is an excellent one, describing a real phenomenon that has been ignored for so long. I do, however, have an objection. The article fails to address the degradation process when coal is processed or transported in other ways than slurry form, particularly those employed in this work. Could, for example, screening (wet or dry) have contributed to the extent of degradation? Perhaps scanning electron micrographs of the samples examined and after screening would have helped to clarify this. I would like to point out that degradation is also observed in pneumatic conveying systems, mechanical conveying, and other means of transportations employed by the mineral industry. Reply by M. G. Ayat We gratefully acknowledge Dr. Fern's comments on the subject paper. As he so rightly points out, the degradation process is a real problem, not only in coal slurry pipelines, but also in many handling and processing equipment employed by the coal and mineral industry. Scanning Electron Microscopic examination of samples may offer very little information about the extent of degradation for several reasons. One is that preparing a representative sample that has undergone degradation will be extremely difficult if not impossible. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that SEM requires only very small amounts of material for testing. Secondly, there is a sample preparation step involved in the SEM examination and, as such, it would be very difficult to associate the extent of degradation to either sample preparation or handling and processing operations. Finally, it is probably worth mentioning that degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors. The logical approach to this problem would, therefore, seem to be a "one-step-at-a-time" approach.

In continuing its long range studies of methods of treating low-grade iron ores, the Bureau of Mines has developed a new selective flocculation, desliming, and flotation procedure that enables effective beneficiation of the finely disseminated ferruginous jaspers of the Marquette range, Mich. The process, developed on a bench scale and later confirmed in the 800-lb/hr pilot plant, comprises dispersion, selective flocculation, desliming to reject fine silica and clay, and flotation of silica from the remainder of minus 400-mesh pulps. Pilot plant flotation of two Marquette range ores, using the selective flocculation procedure on feeds containing 36 percent Fe, yielded iron recoveries of about 84 percent in concentrates containing 65 to 66 percent Fe and 4 to 5 percent silica. These results were metallurgically superior to those obtained when selective flocculation was not used. Also operating characteristics were better, and reagent costs were lower.

Introduction The need to develop accurate predictive hydraulic fracturing simulators arises from the consideration of vertical containment for the fracture. Fracture height growth from a pay zone into adjacent layers has been shown (see Cleary [I]) to depend on three sets of parameters for the different strata: - elastic properties, - closure stress variations, and, -fracturing fluid leak off, and poro-elastic stresses. Qualitative analysis of the effects of these parameters has been reported in the literature. The first effects were described by Van Eekelen, using simple elasticity considerations [2]. The effect of stress variations was described numerically by Simonson and a1. [3] and experimentally by Thiercelin [4]. Effects of back stresses induced by fluid invasion on fracture propagation were considered by Cleary [5]. In order to couple these effects, a numerical code al- lowing the simulation of three dimensional growth of a hydraulically induced fracture has been developed with the ability of representing the effects of heterogeneities on fracture lateral and vertical extension. The model is based on a new variational formulation of the boundary integral representation of three-dimensional elasticity. The fluid flow and elasticity equations are solved using a moving mesh representation which offers enough flexibility to enable the simulation of any closure stress distribution. Simpler models representing fracture height growth (P3DH models) have been developed [6] [7] that approximate the fracture by a series of one dimensional segments, and the limitation of such approaches is examined in this paper. 1 Description of the model 1.1 Fracture Geometry Hydraulic fracturing simulations involve the coupling of solutions to elastic deformations, fluid flow in the fracture, and fluid leak off into the formation. Since the use of direct solution techniques (i,e,,3D finite elements) is prohibitive, the method used in this study is baaed on a boundary integral representation of the 3D elasticity equations. 1.2 3D Models The classical representation of the problem of a fracture in an infinite medium by boundary integrals is [8]: [ ] where u is the unknown displacement field, r n is the traction operator, I? is the fracture surface, and K is the Kelvin tensor of fundamental solutions to the elasticity operator. OSIRIS is a continuous monitoring system for respirable dust which has been specifically designed for mining and related industries. By using the latest microprocessor technology, OSIRIS provides a sophisticated dust measuring system which is a cost effective alternative to regular gravimetric sampling. The system is certified intrinsically safe for use underground. Up to eight underground OSIRIS sensors can be controlled and monitored by a single IBM PC computer located at the mine surface. This computer provides continuous and instantaneous information about the dust concentrations at the sites being monitored. Information is available in tabular and graphical form. The paper gives details of proving trials of the OSIRIS system in some UK coal mines. During these trials, adjacent OSIRIS sensors placed on the same underground roadway cross-section gave virtually identical results. Throughout a good correlation was obtained with conventional gravimetric dust samples. The OSIRIS equipment proved both reliable and easy to operate. The expansion of gold production in Nevada's Carlin Trend over the last few years has been staggering. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the mine engineering group at Newmont Gold. Organizational changes were implemented by the company to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems. Specially developed computer software and its applications will be explained in this article as well as improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves. Scheduling procedures for the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities will likewise be presented. Ore control procedures and current mine engineering practices are discussed. Growth at Newmont Gold Expansion of production levels at Newmont Gold Co. was brought about primarily by the economic incentive to exploit increased reserves. Clay-coating has been used as an environmental technology tool for the immobilization of toxic elements. The mechanisms of arsenate retention in clays suggest that not only the system pH is of fundamental importance in the process but also the character of metals and ligands that compose the electrolyte system. The goal of this study was to investigate the interactions between system pH and electrolyte ions on the retention of arsenate in an Oxisol soil. The sorption of arsenate decreases with the increase in system pH, reflecting the competitive sorption of arsenate with OH groups. Solutions containing Ca tend to favour the immobilization of arsenate in a relatively broad pH range.

Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

Stone is considered by many to be the premium material for beauty and durability in all kinds of construction. Its use dates to the dawn of civilization and only buildings made of stone have survived from ancient times. The use of stone relative to other materials declined from the beginning of the present century reaching a low point in the third quarter, but there has been a resurgence in the use of stone in construction during the past decade, due probably, to new techniques for producing stone, a greater recognition of its beauty and durability, and greater affluence among consumers. The aesthetic appeal of stone is attested to by the many attempts to simulate it in synthetic materials. Today, natural stone is considered by many to be the ultimate in aesthetic appeal, durability, and ease of maintenance. Consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. The US Bureau of Mines reported that the total value of US consumption in 1978 was $1 13 million and that total imports were valued at $65 million in 1979 (Anon., 1980). In 1989 consumption of domestic dimension stone was valued at $208.3 million and imports at $525 million. This dramatic increase occurred after demand had decreased at an average rate of 2.5% in the two decades prior to 1978 (Anon., 1980). More than half of the imports come from Italy, but production of dimension stone has increased worldwide spectacularly. Meaningful statistics on dimension stone are hard to acquire. The finished piece of stone is a highly value-added product, but stone may be sold as rough blocks, sawed slabs, or finished product. The same piece of stone may therefore be sold and reported three or more times. Furthermore, although the quantity of stone is most commonly reported in tons, stone cladding is more often sold by the surface area and at the same price for different thicknesses. By any measure, however, the production and consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. A significant indication of the resurgence of stone was the introduction of two new trade publications during the 1980s. Stone World (Tradelink Publishing Co., Inc., Oradell, NJ), introduced in 1984 is published monthly and Dimensional Stone (Dimensional Stone Institute, Inc., Woodland Hills, CA), introduced in 1985 is published monthly. Both magazines provide useful information on new technology, market trends, producing areas and companies, and other information not previously available.

"A comprehensive analysis of the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems has been investigated. Cations chosen for this analysis included groups 1A and 2A, rare-earth elements and other common transition metal ions such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ag+, Cd2+, U4+, UO2 2+, Hg2+, Al3+ and Zn2+. The Newton-Raphson technique was used to calculate and plot various metal species over a wide range of pH. This study has clearly shown that by adjusting the concentration of OH-, the separation of Fe from Mn, U from V, Ce and Eu from other rare-earth elements, and In from Sn is possible. The effects of hydrated metal ions on the separation and removal of various metals from each other under various conditions is discussed.IntroductionThe primary purpose of hydrometallurgical processing is to extract, remove and purify various metals from diverse sources. Hydrometallurgists are frequently preoccupied by the extraction of cations in metallic form, but overlook the important role anions play in such processes. A proper choice of anions can determine the fate of successful extraction, removal and purification of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2005; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), and also separation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974) of cations from various solutions.In this study, the authors have examined some of the effects that anions play in various solutions. The Permanente plant of Kaiser Cement & Gypsum Corporation is located at a unique thick deposit of Calera Limestone (Figure 1) on the southwest side of San Francisco Bay. Limestone is rare in the eugeosynclinal Franciscan assemblage, constituting less than 0.1 percent of the total volume. On the northwest part of the San Francisco peninsula Calera Limestone is present as isolated masses from the type sect ion near Rockaway Beach southeastward for ten miles, where the belt is truncated by the San Andreas fault. The large Permanente deposit is sixteen miles south of the truncated belt, on the northeast side of the San Andreas fault. Scattered small exposures are known for about twenty miles southeasterly from Permanente. (1,2) Most deposits of Calera are thin; the type section is about two hundred feet thick. At Permanente, however, the normal limestone section contains at least four hundred feet of limestone; and, due to folding and extensive faulting, the total vertical thickness of the limestone section is over 1400 feet. The unusual thickness of limestone is due to low angle thrust faulting. This fortuitous structure formed a deposit of limestone that supplies an 8,500,000 barrel cement plant in a major metropolitan market.

he Broken Aro coal mine is located at the Woodbury Wildlife Preserve 11 km (7 miles) west of Coshocton, OH on State Route 541. Underground min¬ing at the 16-hm2 (40-acre) site took place during the 1910s. During the past five years, surface mining has occurred along the western and northern perimeters of the underground region. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), R&F Coal and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved in a project to remine the abandoned underground complex. The program also includes installing a mine seal made of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. Previous mining activity in this area has resulted in an acid mine drainage (AMD) problem on portions of the reserve. In particular, a prominent AMD source is present in the Simmons Run drainage. The project goal is to eliminate or reduce the AMD that is discharging into the watershed. It was initially hoped that the Simmons Run drainage area could be economically mined. Accordingly, this area was included in the mine permit. However, experience with other previously mined areas on this reserve showed that the old mine workings were more extensive than originally thought. Old mine workings present several problems. The most significant are reduced coal recovery, poor coal quality and AMD liability. All of these problems increase mining costs. And the more extensive the old workings, the more significant the increase in cost. Based on R&F's experience with old mine workings in this area, it was decided that economic recovery of the Simmons Run drainage reserve was not possible. As a result, R&F excluded the Simmons Run drainage area from its early mine plans. Some time after it was decided not to affect the Simmons Run drainage area, R&F and ODNR's Division of Mining and Reclamation discussed the possibility of removing this area from the permit and attempting to correct the AMD problem as an Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) project. Specifically, the discussion centered around mining through a portion of the old mine workings to expose the mine openings in the highwall. Once exposed, the mine openings would be sealed using FGD material from the nearby Conesville power plant operated by AEP. In addition, there was interest in reclaiming the old tipple and associated gob pile located adjacent to Coshocton County Road 17 on the opposite side of Simmons Run. R&F attempted to eliminate the AMD problem by sealing the mine openings with FGD material. Once the seals were installed, they were covered with overburden. Monitoring wells were installed to determine the effectiveness of the seal and the inundation progress in the old mine workings as well as monitoring the quality of ground water. The project was jointly funded by revenue from the sale of the coal recovered during the project and AML funds. The FGD seal is expected to cause well water levels to increase above preseal elevations. However, the additional head pressure due to increased water depths in the underground mine may cause seepage through the bottom of the mine or out through the perimeter. The in¬creased water depth in the underground mine is expected to cause lower oxygen concentrations in the underground mine water. Since acidity is produced by oxidation of iron pyrites, less oxygen should result in better quality water. Monitoring wells will be installed before seal installation so that pre- and postseal water levels and well water quality can be determined. Surface sampling locations will be identified. These will be monitored before and after seal placement.

Longwall systems are used to mine approximately 50 pct of the world's total coal production. Single entries are the predominate method of longwall development in Europe and Asia where mining conditions are much more severe than those encountered in the United States. During the 1970's and early 19801s, the Bureau of Mines and the coal mining industry invested nearly $20 million in single entry and related research. This report reviews the accomplishments of single-entry research in the United States. Two U.S. single-entry field projects are described; the Sunnyside Single-Entry Project conducted in central Utah, and the Tunnel Boring project conducted in northern West Virginia. Two other important studies are discussed, the Single-Entry Study by NAMCO and the Single-Entry Design Study by Ketron. Inc. This review compares the resulting technology with European counterparts to further assess the utility and efficiency of the U.S. systems, and final1 y, it discusses future research and development options which would lead to safe and productive single-entry longwall development in this country.

The basic story at Bear Swamp was how to excavate an underground chamber 79 feet wide by 227 feet long and 150 feet high, along with the related access, tarbrace, leads, power tunnels and shafts, do it under cost and ahead of schedule and still have just about everybody love you. The isometric sketch of the overall project follows. I won't go into any of the details of the physical scope at this point. Instead, we'll bring out the sizes, grades, particular problems of the different areas as we cover them. First of all, let's establish that Bear Swamp was a Target Estimate - Fee with Incentives type of contract. Gates and Fox's contract was with the project's general contractor, J. A. Jones. We were one of three contractors who submitted proposals and estimates to Jones. After much negotiation and many submittals, Gates and Fox was notified we had been selected to do the underground excavation on April 12, 1971. We had our first people back on site in two days, set up a temporary office, made our first steel order for jumbo erection, pacing our jumbo construction to meet the date when J. A. Jones would have the access portal ready for us. The shops, yards, dry house, compressor building were all erected as sites were designated for our use. At last, on Thursday, June 3, we trimmed the face and moved our 9-machine Euclid jumbo up a hastily constructed haul road and started our portal preparation of the access tunnel.

The paper begins by describing an underhand cut-and-fill mining concept for a 50m thick, generally tabular though irregularly shaped orebody dipping at 30 degrees and occurring at a depth of between 2300 and 2700m in the Sudbury Basin. From this, the broad design requirements of a fill system are stated. Two and three-dimensional numerical models are then described which were built to evaluate the theoretical benefits of different types of fill reinforcement. Included in this evaluation are the effects of span, fill strength, fill tightness, as well as static and dynamic loading types. Results, supported by large-scale physical models, are presented to show the significance of reinforcement on stable, undermined fill performance. Finally the paper describes work which has been done to evaluate the suitability of so-called silicated cemented backfill. This system is, in principal, attractive for deep mining applications since transportation is in the "safe" hydraulic regime, while fill water run-off, segregation and shrinkage effects are potentially eliminated in the stopes. The results from various surface and underground trial pours are reported which substantiate the proposed use of this type of backfill at depth.

A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

"In coal mines, handheld air, electric and hydraulic powered drills are used along belt conveyors, in single entry development, in entries where there are obstructions, and in longwall recovering bolting. In hard rock mines, pneumatically powered jackleg drills are typically used in narrow vein mining. Drilling and bolting in narrow confines has traditionally been performed with pneumatically or hydraulically powered hand-held drills or newer electrically powered hand- held hammer drills due to their low cost, simplicity of operation, and extreme flexibility due to their small size. Mechanized equipment has typically been too large, too expensive, inefficient due to the confined space, and too restrictive due to lack of flexibility for use in narrow confines.Although the handheld equipment is effective, it requires operator exposure to certain inherent hazardous conditions in use. These include falling rock from the roof, rib and face; tripping hazards; bending twisting lifting hazards; high noise levels and chemical fumes from the pneumatic exhaust. The operation of the hand held equipment can adversely affect the long-term health of the operator - continual jackleg operation frequently results in longterm damage to hearing, shoulders, arms and wrist joints and back injuries. This results in a reduction in life style for the operator and higher personnel turnover rates for the mining company.Hand-held drills also typically have limited thrust and torque capability that limits their ability to push long resin bolts, inadequate torque to properly install resin bolts or to properly torque mechanical or tensioned rebar bolts. Hand-held drills do not offer any type of protection for the operator from roof or rib falls. They do not offer any means for handling roof or rib mesh. Since the operator stands on the ground the maximum safe drilling height without use of a ladder or "riding the drill" is limited to 2.44 m (8 ft)."

The present study has investigated the bioleachability of low-grade and high-grade pyritic gold ores and the extraction of gold from the leach residues of bioleaching with thiourea solutions. Final gold extractions as high as 96% were obtained from the high-grade ore and above 93% from the low-grade ore. The gold extraction was found to follow the extent of pyrite biooxidation. Using a cyclic voltammetric technique and carbon-paste-FeS2 electrode it was found that the semiconductor pyrite oxidation involves many intermediate electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, the oxidation is solid-state diffusion controlled as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements.Using Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion biooxidation of pyrite was determined to be AEa=22.4 kJ. A generalized model for the mechanisms of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

"Instrumentation and monitoring of ground deformations in tunneling is a principal means for selecting and controlling the excavation and support methods among those foreseen in the design, for ensuring safety during tunnel construction (including personnel safety inside the tunnel and safety of structures located at ground surface) and, finally, for ensuring construction quality management. In this paper, the effect of Hakim Tunnel excavation on the behavior of the surrounding ground was investigated based on the geotechnical instrumentation. This tunnel with 1080 m length, 18 m width and 12.6 m height is being constructed using the SEM/NATM along the Hakim Highway in Tehran. The results which are obtained from recorded displacements by geodetic pins (on the tunnel wall and roof), extensometers and settlements pins (at the ground surface) demonstrate the tunnel stability during the various stages of excavation. However, it is concluded that the rate of excavation in different sequences could have a major role on stability of tunnel. In this case the surface and underground openings were monitored as well as needed for controlling the face probably collapse. INTRODUCTION Tunneling is increasingly being used world-wide to provide the infrastructure required for sustainable urban areas. The high demand for space and the disturbance of existing infrastructures by construction measures increasingly forces future infrastructure projects to be conducted underground. One of the important purposes of tunneling projects in urban area is not only to minimize displacements but also to control them during the construction (Pourhashemi et al., 2015). Normal method of tunnel stability analysis is not able to evaluate the real rock and soil mass behavior. Hence, instrumentation is a practical method to monitor displacements, to evaluate the stability of underground openings, and also to determine the rock and soil mass properties (Dehghan et al., 2012. Dehghan, 2013). Rocks and soils are materials with properties that can change instantly and significantly from one point to the next. Some complications may often happen due to uncertainties in the loads that the new facility must withstand during construction and operation. Instrumentation and monitoring provide quantitative information on actual behavior of ground and adjacent structures. A lot of deformation monitoring studies for determining and analyzing different kinds of engineering structures such as tunnels, bridges, high-rise buildings and dams are implemented.
