The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. Flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are presented and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium¬ bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite (1,2,3) and scheelite from calcite(24) and apatite(2,5) almost always involve the use of sodium silicate, for example. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood; this fact is probably due to a number of reasons. That is, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species. (6) In addition, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na20 to Si02, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system. (6) At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant.

The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The United States was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1991. According to the US Bureau of Mines, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled about 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st), yielding about 608 kt (670,000 st) of BO, in 1991. Total estimated value was $440 million. That level of production was equal to 1990 revised production figures. Value was greater by $37 million, however, reflecting a strengthening of boron product prices. The US continued to supply essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source to foreign markets of sodium borate products and boric acid. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1991 remained at 1100 people, about the same level as in 1989. The Bureau of Mines estimated total world production of boron in 1991 - mineral concentrate and chemical - at about 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st). That corresponds to about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO ,. World production in 1991 was about equal to revised 1990 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals in 1991. US producers, in order of quantity of production, were US Borax and Chemical Corp., North American Chemical Co., and American Borate Co.

The main purpose of mine ventilation design is to provide sufficient quantity and quality of air to the workers and to dilute methane and other contaminants. It is generally perceived that the additional air along the longwall face will improve methane dilution on the face and in the tailgate. However, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling efforts at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) under a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded research project have found that higher flow velocities along the longwall face are shown to increase the pressure differential between the gob and longwall face allowing more methane to be entrained in the active face and tailgate (TG) area, thereby negating the dilution effect. The increased face ventilation causes an increase in pressure along the headgate side which allows more oxygen to ingress into the gob area, thereby increasing the amount of oxygen available to form explosive methane air mixtures in the gob and to support spontaneous combustion of the coal. Two things are happening at two different locations along the longwall face, increase in pressure as the flow enters the active area cause an increase in pressure which forces more oxygen into the gob, but as the flow is developed along the longwall face, the higher velocities causes greater pressure drop allowing methane to enter the active face further downstream from the headgate (HG) towards the tailgate side. In this paper, a parametric study will be presented to discuss the effect that varying the face air quantity has on methane concentrations in the tailgate and formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in the gob. Counter to conventional wisdom, it appears that increased longwall face air quantities may increase the explosion hazard as they result in increased EGZ volumes in the gob, along with increased methane quantities in the tailgate return.

The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions was investigated. The variables studied were temperature, stirring speed and the concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was believed to be chemical-reaction controlled, with an apparent activation energy of about 25.3 kJ/mol.

Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways; therefore, air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between [ ] the intake and the return airway is zero. At this point, there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation. However, in practice, the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. Booster fans have the potential to increase the capacity and efficiency of coal mine ventilation systems. However, these fans add a significant pressure source to ventilation systems and can create areas where the pressure in the intake is less than the pressure in the return causing recirculation. In systems with multiple booster fans, there may be multiple recirculation paths and, as the capacity of these fans increases, recirculation is more likely to occur.

Many processes in the hydrometallurgical and chemical industries require the separation of dissolved material from suspended solids. Counter current decantation (CCD) with thickeners is one of the methods generally used. The process engineer needs a quick and accurate CCD calculation method. Several theoretical 1-12 CCD calculation methods are available in the literature . The simultaneous 1, 2 equation method for a complex circuit as used would take too long to solve the problems. Approximate equation method1 is not accurate and is for simple cases only. A shortcut method developed by Counselman3 contains no mathematical equation, and thus is not suitable for computer programming. Based on Counselman's method, Woody4 derived two simple equations in terms of percent soluble loss for two typical examples. Scandrett5 included a term for mixing in his formulas. This mixing efficiency was defined by Murphree6. Another method which depends on making volume calculations instead of using weights is presented by Mastin8 and Cahalan9. None of these methods is related to dissolution and pre¬cipitation reactions. Chen 10,11 demonstrated his methods for counter current leaching. His results are calculated from the general solution of a derived linear difference equation for constant underflow, and from the solution of a derived non-linear Ricatti difference equation for variable underflow. This paper concerns derivation of a general equation for CCD washing with provisions for adding and withdrawing the streams, and for leaching (dissolution) or precipitation reactions. I welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss the work and program of the Office of Coal Research. Our programs are oriented to serve the conservation objectives of the Johnson Administration and of the Nation by seeking out the most efficient and best uses for coal. We believe that even if only a portion of our program is successful, the coal industry and the Nation will benefit far out of proportion to our expenditures. Operating with a budget of $7,220,000 in Fiscal Year 1966, OCR sponsors contract research which offers potential for achieving benefits to the coal industry in the form of new production and new markets. This directs us into many areas of research activity: in coal combustion, in advancements in mining methods and coal preparation, in new uses for coal, and in associated economic and marketing research.

This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Although direct examinations of the gob atmosphere are difficult due to the inaccessibility of these gobs, evidence from methane drainage practices and investigations of numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners. Most recently, this was demonstrated in the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe.

An important tool for use in the geochemical assessment of abandoned mine-waste piles is a leach procedure that can easily be done in the field and used for on-site screening of historic mine-waste material. We have developed a simple field leach test that is an effective indicator of waste pile geochemistry and can be used in order to establish the relative geochemical fingerprint for a given pile. This simple procedure also provides indication of the potential chemical composition of run-off from the weathered surface of these piles. As part of developing the technique, a comparative study was carried out on eight mine-waste composite samples from different deposit types. Splits of all eight composites were leached using the field leach test procedure and a modified version of EPA Method 1312 (SPLP). We found that the field leach test consistently provides relative indication of leachate geochemical trends comparable to leachate data derived from the more regulated, time consuming and laborious EPA Method 13 12 (SPLP).

Mining methods used to protect the workings in underground salt mines against the destructive activity of natural factors are presented in this paper. Major hazards and methods of elimination of their impact on the stability of workings, were determined. Old and modern technical means and technologies used for protection and preservation of the selected most interesting sites were characterized. The results of surveys and studies allowed proposing the change of mine structure i.e. dividing it into monumental and not-monumental part, which should improve execution of necessary protective works.

Successful longwall gate entry design requires control of vertical and horizontal stresses. Vertical, or overburden, stresses are most severe in the tailgate where they are concentrated by longwall panel extraction. Horizontal stresses can also be highly destructive but they are less well understood. This paper discusses measurements of in situ horizontal stress fields in the eastern United States, experience with horizontal stress in longwall mines and methods for predicting and controlling horizontal stresses. The information presented was collected through site investigations at 45 US longwalls and an international literature review.

From 1993 through 1999, Cyprus Amax Minerals successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents: from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from sea level to an elevation of 4,900 m (16,00Oft), from city suburbs to remote wilderness and from a low of US$130 million to more than US$ 1billion. The operations included open-pit and underground mines, mill and leach facilities and involved gold, copper, molybdenum and coal. The diversity of these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a "best-practices” project-management protocol to steer corporate expansion in the new millennium. This paper summarizes these best practices, while highlighting the project-management pirfalls to avoid.

More than two thousand abandoned mines within the Animas watershed in Southwestern Colorado are being prioritized for remediation by the Animas River Stakeholders Group (ARSG). Phased collection and assessment of information progressed from large scale to site specific. Prioritization was based on existing or potential environmental impact and technical feasibility of remediation as measured by dissolved Cd, Cu, and/or Zn in the discharge; indicators of habitat degradation; aquatic life in streams; cumulative impacts at the point of compliance; cost effectiveness; treatiblity/feasibility; and cultural and historic preservation.

Cu isotope fractionation in low-temperature aqueous environments has been well documented. Here Cu fractionation was applied to two distinct, yet related, mining problems. First, an exploration geology application, where copper isotope fractionation was measured in oxidized leach caps, chalcocite enrichment blankets and hypogene mineralization in three porphyry copper deposits located in the southwestern U.S. Cu isotope patterns exist in a vertical distribution within the mines, coupled with distinct relationships with the Cu grade. Second, a hydrometallurgical application, where copper isotope fractionation was measured in leach fluids, feed and residues from a quick leach test (QLT) on Cañariaco, Peru ores. The results indicate the relative proportions of the minerals providing Cu during leaching. Interpretations of the QLT test measurements indicate covellite is the dominant ore mineral providing Cu during leaching. Both applications clearly demonstrate the use of the Cu isotope technique to understand low-temperature aqueous processes involving copper.

Final reclamation of mine tailings impoundments typically involves addressing the broad issues of surface stabilization and water management. Surface stabilization includes immobilizing the tailings particles and providing long-term protection of the containment facility. Water management typically includes provisions for handling both the external water (rainfall and runoff) and the internal water (pore fluids). Wet tailings disposal facilities, and sites with limited access and steep topography, present challenges to implementing effective surface stabilization and water management plans. This paper presents a generalized discussion of the approach to tailings impoundment reclamation based on project experience.

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. In situ leaching of disseminate gold deposits has been studied from a theoretical perspective to outline the operating environment for the process. Rock permeability and the relationship of permeability to the site of gold particle deposition are key factors in predicting the efficiency of in situ leaching. Permeability measurements, however, have rarely been made during gold exploration, so that secondary geologic features of the deposit must be used. This paper examines some of the geologic characteristics of disseminated gold deposits and comments on the problems and possibilities of in situ leaching of gold.

The reliable performance of the coal reclaim system is essential to the continued availability of a coal-fired electric generating unit. The control of fugitive coal dust within the areas housing the reclaiming equipment is necessary not only to minimize maintenance and clean-up costs, but is also a safety and health consideration. This paper describes the reclaim system control and dust suppression systems as initially installed, the shortcomings of these systems and the steps eventually taken to correct these shortcomings.

Mining activity around the world has increased significantly to meet stepped-up demand for various metals [1]. Apart from the target minerals, mining also generates huge amounts of unwanted minerals that exit the mines as overburden. Due to the active mining activity, high-grade mineral resources are being depleted, leaving inferior-quality ores [2]. The mining of low-grade ores further increases the amount of overburden/waste per ton of metal equivalent of ore mined. Currently, overburden and other mine waste is most commonly used in the construction industry and as feedstock for making cement and concrete, but the overburden can also be used as a source of valuable minerals and metals [3].
