The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: 1) as a diverse group of fine-grained minerals, 2) as a rock term, and 3) as a particle size term. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that comprise it; therefore, the definition must be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine grained material comprised largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates comprised mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many definitions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic, e.g., halloysite and flint clay. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on various grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 pm. as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 pm. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term clay for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or argillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally understood by those who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material, and it has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial minerals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1988, 1989, and 1990 productions according to the US Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1992). As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodities, each having somewhat different mineralogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. In this section these commodities are organized as follows: 1) bentonite, 2) common clay, 3) hormites, and 4) kaolin. Fuller's earth is discussed in both the bentonite and hormite chapters. Fuller's earth is a term based on use, and both bentonites and hormites are sold as fuller's earth. The overlapping is particularly evident where both bentonite and non-bentonite fuller's earth are used for the same purposes or products, such as in drilling mud, bleaching or clarifying fats and oils, and carriers for insecticides and fertilizers. Kaolin, ball clay, halloysite, and refractory clays are grouped together because they consist mainly of minerals of the kaolin group. Approximately forty years ago, the military services began a realistic investigation of the problems involved with the replacement of high pressure gaseous systems with liquid oxygen systems. The program was temporarily discontinued because of numerous State-of-the-Art problems. Ten years later, interest in the liquid oxygen breathing concept was revived. Initial testing of this concept was completed in 1946. The ensuing years have seen the general acceptance of many cryogenic breathing systems for airborne applications. The inherent features of weight savings (approximately 70%) and space savings (approximately 80%) make it very desirable for high performance military aircraft. A typical aircraft system consists of a storage container with appropriate integrated control valving (the liquid oxygen converter), a heat exchanger, breathing regulator, and oxygen mask. Normally the liquid converter is located in the aircraft wheel well for easy access by ground crew personnel and the breathing regulator is mounted in the cockpit where the pilot can connect his oxygen mask. An aircraft system such as this will provide the pilot with eight hours of breathing oxygen after a 24 hour standby period. Early in 1960, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sought a means of providing a cooling system for their personnel involved in fueling the rockets used in the space program. Beneficiation of high magnesium Florida phosphates requires ultrafine grinding to liberate the dolomite (the main source of magnesium), and a separation process capable of dealing with ultrafine sizes such as selective flocculation. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of separating dolomite from apatite ultrafines by selective flocculation. To achieve this objective, selective polymeric reagents to either dolomite or apatite must be first designed and synthesized. This challenging task was accomplished by carefully selecting complexing/chelating agents which are selective to either the Ca or Mg ionic sites on the minerals, and incorporating these reagents into the structure of long chain water soluble polymers to obtain either selective flocculants (with high molecular weight, MW, polymers), or selective dispersants (with low MW polymers) to either the dolomite or the apatite particles. Synthesis and testing of these polymers on individual and mixed mineral slurries, and on a sample of natural high magnesium phosphate ore, have been attempted and the results are described in the paper. The preliminary results showed encouraging signs for the feasibility of selective flocculation separation of dolomite from apatite.

Holes cored through the Prairie Creek lamproite volcanic complex at the Crater of Diamonds State Park by companies interested in the site's commercial diamond potential give an opportunity to redefine the size and shape of the Prairie Creek pipe. Relationships of cored rock sequences and the discovery of a previously unrecognized major rock type allow a reinterpretation of the sequence and type of intrusive activity. Trench sampling of diamondiferous rock units yielded a diamond content far below what was anticipated based on an estimate from historical records. Inadequacies of shallow bulk-testing methods for a diamondiferous pipe are examined.

The Payback Period (PBP) is one of the most widely applied project evaluation criteria 'in the mineral industry. As much as this criterion is liked by practitioners, it is also criticized by academicians who seriously question its validity. Inspired by this criticism, the author of this paper examines the classical definition of the PBP criterion, and formulates a new one designed for both investment and borrowing projects. It is demonstrated that the PBP, in its revised version, is free from all the shortcommings of the old one, and is fully compatible with the Net Present Value (NPV) criterion, as well as with all the other NPV compatible project evaluation criteria. Since the traditional approach to the comparison of mutually exclusive projects (MEP1s) by means of the PBP criterion has been incorrect, the paper also outlines the correct approach to this problem. Finally, owing to the fact that the PBP depends on the assumed interest rate, and using a specially developed computer program, the PBP is graphically presented, in six numerical examples, as a function of the interest rate.

The Schaffer linear kimberlite complex and Aultman kimberlite diatremes comprise a major part of the State Line kimberlite district of Colorado and Wyoming, which encompasses approximately 200 sq mi (500 km2). The district is located along the eastern flank of the northern Front Range and is underlain prin- cipally by Precambrian granites (approx. 1.4 b.y.) which have been intruded into an older (approx. 1.75 b.y.) metamorphic complex. The kimberlite occurrences are Devonian in age and are related to older Precambrian linear structures. The Schaffer kimberlite complex is a dike or fissure system with enlargements or blows developed at the intersections of cross faults; the two Aultman occurrences are diatremes. Kimberlite within the Schaffer complex is predominately grey to green phlogopite-calcite kimberlite breccia and tuffisitic breccia. Carbonate is abundant in some phases. Inclusions of host granite are common and locally abundant. Upper mantle peridotite, pyroxenite, and eclogite and lower crustal granulite xenoliths are present at many localities. Four phases of tuffisitic kimberlite breccia occur in the Aultman diatremes. These breccias are characterized by high carbonate and serpentine contents. Xenoliths of upper crustal granite, lower crustal granulite, and upper mantle assemblages are abundant locally. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rock xenoliths are also abundant in the Aultman diatremes but are absent in kimberlite of the Schaffer complex. From 1979 through September 1982, Cominco American, Inc., conducted geologic mapping, petrographic studies, geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys, and auger drilling in the Schaffer-Aultman project area as part of an extensive evaluation program of kimberlite occurrences. Forty bulk samples (approx. 8,000 metric tons) were excavated from the occurrences and then were processed for diamonds at Cominco American's heavy media separation and diamond recovery test plant at Fort Collins, Colorado. Indicated grades from the Schaffer and Aultman kimberlites range from approximately 0.5-1.0 carat per 100 metric tons and as such, the occurrences do not appear to approach economic viability at this time.

Two weathering procedures are being developed by the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative in cooperation with federal agencies(OSM and EPA). Objects are to: (1) standardize existing humidity cell and leaching column procedures; (2) improve test methods by maintaining a carbon dioxide enriched environment needed to optimize carbonate mineral dissolution, and quantifying particle size variables to evaluate reaction kinetics, and (3) provide flexibility in test method implementation consistent with EPA guidelines for Performance-Based Measurement Systems. Preliminary results indicate the CO2enriched leaching environments produce alkalinities that are similar to field observations and greater than the tests run under atmospheric PCO2. Leaching columns produce higher alkalinity than humidity cells.

Knife River Coal Mining Company's Beulah Mine is a multiple seam lignite operation located in western North Dakota. The mine began production in 1963 with annual production at 450,000 metric ton and now produces 2.2 mm ton. As development progresses, operations have advanced into more complex geologic areas. Various techniques have been analyzed to maximize coal recovery in a cost effective manner. Additional studies are on-going to determine what changes will be implemented as we encounter deep wet sands in the reserve area.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines evaluation which examined the extent of gas leakage from sealed areas in underground coal mines and measured the effectiveness of commonly used structures for controlling the quantity of gas exchange from these areas. Evaluations were performed on five abandoned areas in two operating underground mines within the same coal seam. Methane and oxygen levels inby the seals were monitored to determine if the gas leakage was unidirectional or bidirectional. Results from this and prior work dealing with minimizing gas leakage were then applied to a newly abandoned area. Also discussed are bulkhead site preparation, construction plans, techniques for monitoring the status of the atmosphere within the sealed volume, and a modified European method for controlling gas migration from the sealed volume to the active mine.

Environmental regulations concerning the processing of gold ores and the treatment and disposal of spent process solutions range from rigid standards in some locations to site specific options in several other jurisdictions. This paper examines the regulations and policies in two North American jurisdictions. Emphasis will be placed on the mill process and waste stream treatment and disposal, and implications for environmental impacts. Case examples of mine licence requirements will be discussed, with brief descriptions of individual treatment and disposal systems. Policies and environ- mental regulations within each jurisdiction will be examined in terms of potential environmental protection.

Synthetic indium-bearing zinc ferrite (IBZF) was mechanically activated by a tumbling mill. Subsequently, the behavior and kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF in sulfuric acid solution were investigated. The results demonstrate that the tumbling ball milling enhances the leaching reactivity of IBZF and increases the zinc and indium extractions. The reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration have an important effect on leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF. The kinetic model -ln(1-x) = kt was used to describe the kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF and to calculate the kinetic parameters. The tumbling ball milling causes a decrease in activation energy and reaction order, which indicates that the dissolution of IBZF after mechanical activation by a tumbling mill becomes less sensitive to temperature and H2SO4 concentration. For the zinc leaching, the activation energy decreases from 73.9 to 70.3 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.72 to 0.70. For indium leaching, the activation energy decreases from 78.1 to 73.5 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.82 to 0.69. It is found that the dissolution rates of the initial IBZF and activated IBZF are controlled by surface chemical reactions.

Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012). This is the second part of a three-part series. The first part was published in the October 2013 issue of Minining Engineering magazine and can be found here at www.me.smenet.org. This paper discusses methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables, and presents a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. The third paper, to be publised at www.me.smenet.org on Oct. 14, presents an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved.

The Inter-Island Tunnel is one of two undersea tunnels which are part of the Boston Harbor Clean-Up Program. The tunnel is 7.7 km (25,160 ft) long, bored to a 4.3 m (14 ft) diameter in the Cambridge Argillite Formation and was finished to a 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter final concrete lining. The owner is the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) who is a regional authority responsible for overall design and construction. The tunnel's primary purpose is the transport of untreated effluent from Nut Island facility in Quincy, MA to the new treatment plant at Deer Island. Two sludge lines are installed for the transport of sludge from Deer Island to Nut Island. During construction the contractor encountered fault zones, fractured strata, and soft ground tunnel sections which liberated more ground water than was originally anticipated by the project designer. Ground water was controlled during mining and the placing of the final lining. The final lining of cast-in-place concrete had to be backfill grouted to cut off water inflows and provide contact for equal tunnel loading which is critical in long-term design. This paper deals with an engineered backfill grouting system which was the first of its type to be used in North America. It discusses the geological conditions encountered, the design criteria used in the evaluation process, and an indepth review of the various system components. It demonstrates how contractors can use knowledgeable and professional industry suppliers to solve difficult construction problems.

This report concerns the successful construction of Contract No. 287 of the Northeast Side Relief Sewer System for the Metropolitan Sewerage District of the County of Milwaukee. The contract involved the construction of approximately 3316 meters (10,880 feet) of tunnel concrete lined to 1.83 meters (72 inch) internal diameter; 30.48 meters (100 feet) of 1.83 meters (72 inch) reinforced concrete pipe jacked-in-place; a river crossing of approximately 107 meters (350 feet); 197 meters (647 feet) of 1.83 meters (72 inch) reinforced concrete pipe in open-cut; several diversion and flow monitoring structures; and miscellaneous manholes and appurtenances. The contract proposal, which was extremely prescriptive, did allow alternative methods of primary support consisting of precast reinforced concrete segments, steel liner plates, steel ribs with wood lagging, and combinations thereof in designated areas. The specifications required the contractor to designate which support scheme it intended to use. The specifications also required compressed air as a means of ground water control for approximately 2316 meters (7600 feet) of tunnel. The alternative selected in the bid proposal was the support method consisting of steel ribs and wood lagging for 2263 meters (7425 feet) of tunnel and steel liner plates for the remaining section. Shaft supports, by specification, were designed to be steel liner plate with steel ribs varying in size from 4.27 meters to 6.10 meters (14 foot O.D. to 20 foot O.D. ).

An open pit production planning method for stage mining is presented in this paper. The method brings solutions to the four most important parameters in stage mining : 1) the number of stages, 2) the size and geometry of each stage pit, 3) the mining sequence of the benches in the stage pits, and 4) the time of transition from one stage to the next. The method can also simultaneously optimize the ultimate pit, mine life, and production rate in each stage.

Introduction Shotcrete, by the American Concrete Institute definition, is mortar or concrete pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. The term gunite is still common in literature. It is a trade name established by Cement Gun Co. of Allentown, PA, around 1911 for a dry mix of fine aggregate material, hydrated at the nozzle, and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. This article will discuss shotcrete applications, ingredients, mix proportioning, batching and mixing, admixtures, testing, and steel fiber vs. conventional shotcrete. Applications Shotcrete is used primarily by the mining and underground construction industries to temporarily stabilize an excavated rock surface until a permanent cover can be installed. It may also be used as the permanent covering material. Other uses include refractory material, architectural finishes, slope stability, wearing surfaces, repairing existing concrete structures, fireproofing, and corrosion protection of steel. Wet Versus Dry Process In the wet process, all ingredients, including water but not accelerator, are mixed the same way as normal concrete before its placement by pneumatic projection. The accelerator is added in a liquid state through the nozzle at the point of placement. In the dry process, all ingredients, including acceleration in dry form but not water, are mixed just before placement by pneumatic projection. Water is added through the nozzle at the point of placement. Liquid accelerator may be added at the nozzle in the dry process. Ingredients Shotcrete consists basically of the same ingredients as concrete with some limitations. Type I, II, and III cements are used. However, Type II seems to be used most in underground applications. This can be attributed to ground water at most sites having slight to moderate concentrations of sulfates. Air-entraining cement or air-entraining admixtures are generally not used in dry mix shotcrete. It is generally agreed that it is impossible to entrain air due to the absence of the usual concrete mixing action, and the high velocity of impingement of the material on the application surface. Air-entraining cement or air-entraining admixtures are used in wet mix shotcrete. Their use, however, is not widespread due to the placement method and the fact that high velocity air drives off most of the entrained air. Test results are not conclusive in showing any durability increase of shotcrete to freezing and thawing by using entrained air. In spite of current practice, the trend is toward additional research, with more agencies and owners requiring the use of entrained air. The philosophy behind this is that some entrained air is better than no entrained air to increase durability to freezing and thawing. The aggregates used in shotcrete are the same as those used in concrete. However, the largest coarse aggregate presently used is 19 mm (0.75 in.). A typical gradation requirement is shown in Table 1. The water quality requirement for shotcrete is the same as that for concrete. Accelerators are by far the most important admixture in shotcrete.

Separating oil shale from waste material or into high- and low-grade fractions can have a major economic influence on the surface retorting process. Different shale rock components vary significantly in physical and surface chemical properties, such as specific gravity, color, and water wettability. Various techniques that use the differences in one or more of these properties have been proposed to preconcentrate oil shale before retorting. This article discusses some proposed techniques, such as gravity separation, sorting, and froth flotation. Retorting oil shale is the most common method for recovering oil from the rock. This process is accomplished either underground (in situ) or above ground (ex-situ or surface retorting). Both techniques have serious limitations, such as low recoveries in the underground method and the ability to process rich shales only in the above ground retorting method. Also, environmental problems are associated with both techniques. Some of these limitations could be overcome if feed to the retorts is of consistent grade. This could be achieved by selecting appropriate sites for in situ retorting and selective mining for surface oil shale retorting. Both of these, however, would have a serious economic impact on shale oil recovery. Obviously, little control can be exercised over preparing feed material in the in situ retorting process, but beneficiation of oil shale could definitely be advantageous in surface retorting, and should have positive influence on the overall economics of recovering oil from the shales. For example, preconcentration of mined shale could result not only in reduced costs for materials handling, but also in waste disposal costs, since waste characteristics before and after the retorting process are significantly different. Upgrading the oil shale might also allow substitution of alternate technology for retorting as well as extend the process to recover oil from marginal deposits. Also, the separated material may become a potential source for recovering other values from shale deposits. Overall, the incentives for preconcentration are to reduce costs and improve thermal efficiency of the recovery process. Research methods to develop an economic model for the determination of regional mineral advantage are discussed. An industrial complex conceptual framework is used to study potential mineral resource outputs of Kansas. A procedure for making a comparative cost analysis of potential outputs for a Kansas-based industrial complex is outlined and illustrated. Methods for estimating aggregate demand and for developing an input-output matrix for a hypothetical limestone complex are explained. The input-output matrix is expressed in physical units. A computer algorithm for converting physical production data and input cost data into total cost per unit of output information is briefly explained and flowcharted. Limitations and usefulness of this procedure in determining regional advantages are surveyed.

This is a shortened version of the paper ?The Methane-Air Explosion Hazard Within Coal Mine Gobs published in the 2013 volume of SME Transactions (Brune, 2013, pp. 376-390). This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Evidence from numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners, including the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives April 5, 2010.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe. The insufficiency of Boolean Logic and ?hard? decision making to represent and manage spatial data in set with their spatial errors comprises a remarkable difficulty for widely accepted estimation procedures, in realistic planning of space geometric problems and management through a GIS. Fuzzy logic as well as other theories such as the theory of Probabilities, Bayesian theory etc., contribute substantially towards this direction. Data are accompanied by their accuracy and are managed through the applications and modules of Spatial Analysis, aiming to access a decision with known accuracy and fuzziness. As it concerns the cases of waste sanitary landfill sites designing, which are based on the construction of a bank, the problem shown by this paper, seems to be quite serious. The determination of the theoretical waste disposals body in the landfill is based on an uncertain Digital Elevation Model (DEM). As this model is a result of a procedure enclosing errors and inaccuracies, it is for certain a non - error free model. Thus, the geometric computation of the excavation quantities and the waste disposals solid body volume, misquotes the expected standard theoretical computation and imports the need to decide and set a risk level for the project.
