The aim of this paper is to present the progress of the plan of the Greek Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC S.A.) at the Lignite Centre of Megalopolis in Peloponnesus (southern Greece) to manage impacts on local communities in areas affected by its activities during the lignite mining operation and post-closure. The reclamation works in the waste dump areas of the mines that constitute the Megalopolis Lignite Centre, concerning the utilization of waste dumps for infrastructure community projects constructions are discussed. Moreover, selected environmental indicators concerning land use and closure and rehabilitation are presented.

[The Atlantis-II-Deep is a hydrothermal mineralization located along the median valley of the Red Sea at a water depth of about 2200 m. Extensive exploration of the metal-rich brine deep revealed a potentially mineable deposit on economic interest consisting of oxides, silicates and sulphides with considerable concentrations of zinc, copper, cadmium and silver. Geostatistics was applied to assess the most likely in-situ vague of the metal potential for economical exploitation. Semi-variograms were constructed to characterize the structure of the regionalized distribution of the geological parameters. Volume grades and thicknesses were determined by the kriging technique, avoiding systematically biased high or low grades, and then block .tonnages were computed. The estimation variances, distribution of errors and histograms of observed and kriged values in each grid Mock were also produced.]

The regional geologic setting is essentially a volcanic island arc built upon an oceanic basement, consisting of basalt and minor pelagic sediments (the Tinombo Formation of Eocene - lower Miocene age. Trail et. al. 1974). -- An east-west chain of intermediate and acid calc-alkaline volcanoes (the Bilungala Volcanics) was built on the oceanic basement during the Miocene. The Bilungala Volcanics are flanked to the north largely by contemporaneous andesites and volcanoclastic sediments of the Dolokapa Formation. During middle to upper Miocene time the Bilungala Volcanics were invaded by large masses of predominantly dioritic intrusive rock and it is within one of these dioritic intrusive complexes, the Bone Diorite, that the cluster of porphyry copper systems occurs. Renewed volcanic activity in the Plio-Pleistocene produced acid pyroclastic rocks (the Pinogu Volcanicsi whose distribution is controlled by present-day topography. Structural trends, largely interpreted from SLR imagery, are pre- dominantly NW or NIWJ. The right-lateral Gorontalo Fault, which trends hW through the town of Gorontalo (Katili, 19691 is the most prominent structural feature. Many of the major structures in the Tapadaa district have similar orientations and may be sympathetically related to the Gorontalo Fault.

To determine the effect of flux crystal size on the production rate and strength of sinter, batch sintering tests were conducted on samples of both dolomite and limestone of various crystal sizes. In addition, calcination tests .were performed on the dolomite and Limestone to determine the effect of crystal size on calcination rate at various temperatures normally attained in sinter beds. The results indicate that flux crystal size does not affect sinter production rate or sinter strength.

The Hladysz Rock Tester was developed at the South Dakota School of Mines as a portable rock strength tester. The hand held device is placed against a rock surface and struck by a hammer. The impacted force causes a steel ball in the device nose piece to indent the rock and simultaneously indent a standard steel bar also contained in the nose piece. By comparing the two indented diameters the compressive strength of the rock can be calculated using laboratory determined correlation coefficients.

Early Models In 1906, Daniel Jackling demonstrated that relatively low-grade disseminated copper deposits could be mined profitably using mass mining technology. The ensuing years saw a gradual increase in activity aimed at defining ore targets for large reserves of disseminated supergene enriched copper ores. Prominent organizations, such as Calumet and Hecla, Phelps Dodge, and Asarco, established teams of geologists. They focused on interpreting oxidized and leached outcrops over supergene chalcocite ore bodies. Techniques to evaluate oxidized cappings and predict the presence of underlying supergene chalcocite enrichment ores were developed and put to practical use by the late 1920s and early 1930s (Locke, 1926; Blanchard 1939, 1968). Oxidized capping evaluation centered on recognizing oxidation products derived from the various sulfide minerals found in disseminated deposits. Chalcopyrite, for example, oxidizes to a characteristic reddish pitch limonite that exhibits characteristic boxworks. Chalcocite is recognized by earthy, powdery, indigenous, hematite-rich limonite. Pyrite weathers to characteristic cavities and yellowish jarositic limonites. Evaluation of cappings is a systematic effort of noting and estimating the preoxidation sulfide mineral content and copper grade in an oxidized outcrop using mineral composition and morphology of oxidation products. Several complications were noted early in this technology's development. For example, the associated pyrite content of protore greatly influences mobility of copper and iron during oxidation. High-pyrite disseminated sulfide assemblages, upon oxidation, mobilize iron as well as copper. This results in oxidized rock with many leached cavities, poorly developed boxworks, and poorly developed indigenous limonites. This effect was noted and used in a general way to identify possible development of supergene chalcocite. Indeed, strongly leached outcrops could be present over enriched ore. A second complication is the manner in which associated gangue minerals influence the products of sulfide oxidation. Reactive gangue minerals, such as carbonates, neutralize acids formed by sulfide oxidation. Thus, copper cannot be moved from oxidized outcrops. Relatively nonreactive gangue, such as quartz-sericite-altered schist or porphyry, neutralizes supergene acid very slowly. This allows copper to move out of the oxidized outcrop. Recognizing these features was closely allied to an early understanding of the processes involved in oxidation supergene enrichment of disseminated ores. Field observations and mineralogic mapping of oxidized cappings were important in discovering many important porphyry copper ore bodies during the 1920s. These include Silver Bell, Miami-Inspiration, and Morenci in Arizona; Tyrone, NM; and Ely, NV. Capping interpretation like-wise led to discoveries at Mineral Park and Esperanza in Arizona during the exploration surge that accompanied high copper prices in the 1950s. In the 1960s, Kennecott research geologists refined and quantified some aspects of oxide capping appraisal (Anderson, 1982). The ratio of jarosite plus hematite to the total limonite assemblage was shown to be proportional to amount of copper leached from the oxidized outcrop. Thus, if the limonite assemblege in an oxidized capping consists of 40% goethite, 20% jarosite, and 40% hematite, 60% of the original copper is leached. The amount of copper remaining in the capping, together with the limonite mineralogy, can then be used to estimate original copper grade in the outcrop, amount of leaching, and chalcocite enrichment grade (in feet/% copper) in the underlying supergene chalcocite zone (Anderson, 1982). Evaluation of oxidized cappings and prediction of chalcocite blanket ore targets were successfully used in the western US and South America through the 1950s. Discovery of new porphyry copper provinces in other regions during the 1950s and 1960s, however, underscored some limitations of capping evaluation technology. Porphyry copper systems in Australia generally oxidize and weather to hematitic cappings. Presumably, the semiarid monsoon environment and the long time that the sulfide systems have been exposed to oxidation on that continent lead to development of relatively stable hematite. It is now recognized that jarosite and goethite persist metastably in the limonite assemblage in all areas once sulfide oxidation is complete and acid generation ceases (Brown, 1971). The assemblage eventually converts to hematite. But, climatic conditions in arid southwest US allows metastable limonites to persist for a long time, thus providing information on former sulfide assemblages. This paper discusses some important industrial interactions between size reduction and downstream froth flotation processes. Experience gained at the industrial level is clearly indicating that how size reduction circuits are designed and/or operated can have a significant impact on froth flotation beyond normal considerations of particle size, liberation, etc. Three specific interactions will be discussed: 1) the impact of steel grinding media versus autogeneous grinding on the efficiency of sulfide mineral flotation with varying thiol collectors and water sources; 2) the importance of appropriately utilizing the electrochemical window that is created in the grinding to enhance sulfide mineral recovery by froth flotation; and 3) the interaction of particle size distribution with collector dosage and frother type.

When driving a shallow soft ground bore, the appearance of surface craters along the tunnel alinement indicates trouble, particularly when a major highway is intersected. During the excavation of a 3.7 m diam tunnel in Seattle, Washington a chemical grouting program was implemented to stabilize soil conditions sufficiently to allow advancement of the mole without loss of ground. Unanticipated mixed face conditions consisting of saturated running sand and some boulder pockets bedded on top of dense glacial till created excavation difficulties. A discussion of problems and corrective measures is presented.

Collophane, cryptocrystalline fluorapatite, is examined as a substrate for plant water and wastewater remediation. The attenuation of Fe3+, Cr3+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ is presented as a function of metal ion concentration, amount of collophane, initial pH and conditioning time. TCLP results for Pb2+ contaminated collophane are presented. Mechanisms of adsorption for divalent and trivalent species are suggested. Stratiform uranium deposits occur in Canada along the north shore of Lake Huron near the base of the Middle Precambrian Huronian Supergroup. Outcrop of the Buronian Supergroup extends for over 400 km from Sault Ste. Marie in the west eastward through Sudbury and then northeastward to Cobalt. Maximum stratigraphic thickness exceeds 5 km. The predominant Huronian rock type is metamorphosed sandstone (quartzite), with sub- ordinate argillite, conglomerate, mixtite (possibly tillite), volcanic rocks, and minor limestone, Much of the quartzite is highly feldspathic. Substantial uranium ore was first discovered in Huronian rocks in 1953 and has been exploited continuously since the initial mine-mill plant was constructed at the Pronto ore body, 30 km south of the present townsite of Elliot Lake. Only one ore body remains in production, however. It is shared by Rio Algom and Denison Mines 14 km north of the town of Elliot Lake.

The increasing cost of developing new mines and the need to mine more marginal deposits have led mining companies to use more sophisticated estimation methods such as kriging. But until recently, coal mining companies have shown little or no interest in these techniques. However, the stringent quality controls which are now placed on coal have led to a surge in interest in improved estimation methods. This can be seen from the -, number of research projects by private companies and governmental agencies on the application of geostatistics to coal reserve estimation. At present, most of these programs are centered on the problem of estimating the tonnage and the average grade (i.e. ash percent, sulphur content, calorific value, etc.) of the coal in-situ. See, for example, Sabourin (1975), Woods (1976, 1979), Pauncz and Nixon (1979) and Armstrong (1980). These studies show that the established techniques of linear geostatistics can be applied successfully to coal deposits. The study by Woods is particularly interesting because he had access to the actual production figures as well as the initial sample data from the no 2 seam in the Greenside Colliery owned by the Anglo-American Corporation. He showed that the estimates obtained by kriging were consistently closer to the actual production figures than those given by three other estimation methods. This confirms the superiority of kriging as a method of estimating block values for coal. Another advantage of geostatistics is that it can be used to determine the optimal spacing between drill holes. An example of this is given by Armstrong for the coking coal deposit in the Bowen Basin, Australia.

The trend in underground room-and-pillar coal mining is to employ remote-controlled, continuous-mining machines and extended cuts to depths of 12 m (40 ft) or more. This system of coal extraction, adopted by more than 435 mines, can create additional worker safety hazards. To address the ground-control-related safety hazards, a combination of statistical analysis and numerical modeling was used. Initially, the reported roof-fall incidents and fatalities were reviewed to delineate the ground-control hazards. Then, the application of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) for estimating safe extended-cut depths was evaluated. Finally, computer modeling was completed to predict roof displacements during extended-cut mining. This paper describes the results of these studies and their impacts on the safety of extended-cut mining.

This report summarizes the results of preliminary investigations concerning the influence of block caving mining upon adjacent mine openings and discusses possible methods for reducing critical rock pressures and damage to these openings. These investigations are one part of a general study of the rock mechanics of block caving by the Denver Mining Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this part of the study Is to obtain an estimate of the stress concentrations around mine openings adjacent to block caving stopes for use in developing better designed openings and improving mining methods. When mine openings such as slusher drifts, grizzly drifts, and haulage drifts are damaged by rock pressures induced by block caving mining, the mining cost increases, mine production decreases, and ore recovery may be consider- ably lessened. Methods of mining that result in lower rock pressures and methods of design that enable mine openings to withstand these pressures are desirable. The development of these methods, in turn, requires a fuller understanding of the following: The stres concentrations around the mine openings and the changes in stress induced by adjacent mining; the physical properties, such as the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the rock surrounding the openings; and the support supplied by the concrete lining, timber sets, or other types of supports used in the openings.

The introduction of liberalisation in Dutch mineral provision has created a lot of uncertainty on how and where to supply for the need of construction raw materials. Some possible effects of this policy shift are: 1. the extraction of materials from small pits with truck transport, 2. an increasing dependence on foreign suppliers, 3. the usage of marine dredged materials, 4. more input of secondary substitutes. The outcome of this policy and the resulting marketbehaviour have consequences for transport and infrastructure and hence for sustainability issues. Mineral provision, on the other hand, is also influenced by the availability of infrastructure. Insufficient transport capacity could hamper the development of mineral projects that render benefits to society. (Even) in a liberalising market for mineral provision, the central and local governments have an important role to play with regard to infrastructure and the effects of transport. Various trends point towards an increasing internationalisation in mineral provision. What will increasing trade and increasing influence of the market mean for transport infrastructure? How should increasing transport be judged with respect to sustainability? In the sustainability discussion these questions will have to be answered on a national as well as on a European scale.

The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make everything "bigger and faster" This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities for clean coal. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal bulk carriers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities at ports. The present engineering and construction cost of these larger facilities make it essential that the flow and handling properties of the particular coals are fully known. These properties can be measured well in advance and the proper design criteria established. This eliminates costly surprises later on during start-up and operations. This paper will review coal and coal refuse properties, such as shear strength, cohesion, friability, and the flowability of coal and how they affect the design criteria of storage silos.

Case studies are presented in this paper to illustrate the usefulness and applicability of using conditional simulation in under- ground coal mine planning. Conditional simulation is a technique developed in the last five years that allows the building of a simulated ore body (or coal deposit) model. Construction and validation of the simulated model is described in order to show how well the model reproduces the essential characteristics of the deposit. In the model, the thickness, ash, and sulfur content are known everywhere in the deposit and each variable has the same mean, variance, and spatial variability (variogram) as that variable has in the real deposit. Use of the simulated deposit in the design of drilling strategy for long range mine planning is demonstrated in me case study. Determining the potential of short term production scheduling to reduce the fluctuations of sulfur in run of mine coal is described in the second case study.

Cumulophyric feldspars, of varying morphology, carry myrmekitic quartz interstitially between microperthitic feldspar lamellae. The size, coarseness, and morphology of these crystals, together with concordant foliation features constitutes evidence that they are a product of primary crystallization, formed prior to eruption from a vent. These crystals occur preferentially along 2 - 5 mm thick tan, vesicular to compressed alteration bands intercalated with more densely welded light grey bands. In perlite with quartz at or below a 0.1% threshold, megascopic feldspars are less than 1%. Perlite with quartz above this level has megascopic feldspar concentrations >3%, typically in the 5-20% range.

"The objective of this work is to validate a methodology for spatially predicting the fracture intensity, defined as the average fracture area per unit volume. First, using the observations from drill holes, the fracture intensity is directly inferred at the support of drill-hole composites based on a Terzaghi correction. Subsequently, the composite values are interpolated to larger blocks. The methodology is tested on sets of simulated fracture networks, in which each fracture consists of a disc with a random diameter, random position and random orientation. For each of these simulated networks, one can calculate the actual fracture intensity within any region of space, based on geometric considerations. A regular sampling mesh is then defined to emulate a set of vertical drill holes and the proposed methodology is applied to predict the fracture intensity, both globally and locally. The actual and predicted fracture intensities are finally compared, showing that predictions are unbiased, insofar as, on average, the prediction error is always close to zero. Also, the error dispersion increases when the support of the prediction decreases, which is consistent with the well-known support effect. In practice, the proposed methodology allows predicting fracture intensity based exclusively on drill-hole information, without the need for simulating fracture networks in space, hence its interest. INTRODUCTION The characterization of fractures in rock masses is an important part in the evaluation of mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks. Fractures have a large impact in disciplines such as reservoir engineering, safety of underground storage of CO2 or of nuclear waste, assessment of high-enthalpy geothermal installations, safety of mining exploitations, efficiency of in-situ leaching operations or of extraction by block-caving. As a rock mass property, fractures must be characterized in the three-dimensional space, whereas observations are limited to 1D (drill holes) and 2D (outcrops, drift walls), moreover very often to rather short stations, so that the available data are subject to geometric bias, truncation and censoring. Fracture characteristics includes the number of fracture sets and, for each set, the number, orientation, spacing, location, shape and size of the fractures must be inferred from data sampling. Some important parameters that are considered nearly in all models are fracture intensity and fracture size."

Solvent extraction is widely used in hydrometallurgical processing of uranium for purification and upgrading leach solutions prior to recovery of metal values. Conventional solvent extraction processing utilizes mixer-settler units to achieve mixing of the aqueous and organic phases. Use of mixer-settlers permits continuous treatment of feed, but the processing rate is restricted by the time required for phase separation after mixing. Because of the high-shear type mixing used in a mixer settler a portion of the organic phase becomes mechanically entrained in the aqueous resulting in loss of extractant. For this reason application of mixer-settler units is often limited by the settling area required for phase separation, especially for systems where high volume throughputs are desirable or necessary. Several alternatives to mixer-settler operations involving the use of column extractors have been proposed. Packed columns (1-2), in which organic and aqueous phases are fed countercurrently, utilize packing materials similar to those used in gas absorption or distillation columns. Extraction columns utilizing rotating(3-5) or reciprocating elements(6-7) to achieve mixing have also been developed. Van Dijek(8) originated pulsed columns, in which mechanical or air pulsing of the phases enhances the mixing in the vessel. Each of the above column processes involve varying degrees of mechanical complexity which may lead to operational difficulties.

In the event of fire underground, it is essential that all miners be warned as quickly as possible. With mine air, rapidly depleted of oxygen and contaminated with smoke and toxic fire gases, any delay in the warning signal could have disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, present mine, fire warning systems, such as stench, audible or visual alarms, telephones, and messengers, are often slow, unreliable, and limited in coverage.
