Prior to mining, all rocks contained in a mineral deposit must be placed in one of several categories known as ore types. Each ore type describes a different way that the rock will behave in processing. The ore type determines which process stream a particular mined unit will be sent to, sets expectations for process engineers and metallurgists, and forms the basis for recovery predictions and production estimates. At first, ore types are assigned mainly by geologists based on visible geological criteria (dominant ore mineralogy, estimated grade, rock type, alteration type). As metallurgical tests are carried out and process data accumulate, the resulting criteria may be factored into the ore typing process, typically as assays and recoverable metal using the relevant process(es). Other variables may also be incorporated into ore typing at operations if they are particularly important, such as grindability, preg-robbing, gangue reagent consumption, and the presence of especially deleterious minerals such as talc or smectite. The mine operation department may also redefine ore types and/or process destinations based on economic criteria. A “best” ore type is designated that (in theory) best describes how the rock will behave in processing. Codes representing this ore type are entered into the drill-hole database, then interpreted on cross sections and level plans, and finally added to the block model. Ore types are iteratively reexamined and adjusted over the life of a project. Major difficulties in effective ore typing are (1) lack of communication between geologists and metallurgists, (2) the imprecision inherent in imposing clean categories on messy natural systems without discrete divisions, (3) the need for ore types to provide useful information for a wide range of processes, (4) difficulties in scaling up laboratory test results to mine production, and (5) conflict among geological, metallurgical, and economic criteria for ore typing.

Productivity from large walking draglines is primarily dependent on operator skills. This machine may be in operation three shifts a day, 364 days a year, and its output is directly related to coal uncovered and mine profitability. Dragline operators must have highly developed manual skills and be knowledgeable in mine planning and working strategies. When using equipment costing more than $25 million, some formal training is usually required before an operator is allowed to assume complete con¬trol; however, dragline operators rarely receive any structured training before operating these giant excavators. A form of apprenticeship is usually followed where an operator candidate progresses from a groundsman to an oiler position. As an oiler, he is permitted to operate the dragline for short periods under supervision. After apprenticeship, the operator is considered sufficiently prepared to operate the largest, most powerful machine at the mine. The apprenticeship training method has obviously provided the surface mining industry with skilled dragline operators; however, conditions are arising that require a realistic and effective training tool that can be accessed by mining companies. New mines -either planned, under construction, or recently opened in the West-do not have access to a pool of experienced operators and oilers as do Midwest mines. As coal mining activities increase in both the West and Midwest, demand for trained dragline operators could be required in a short amount of time. Also, the more productive techniques along with sound basics of strip mining are sometimes lost in the informal "OJT" training method. Modern draglines are the pacemakers of the strip mine, and are simply too expensive to be used as a training device where lost productivity and susceptibility to damage can directly affect mine output. The Dragline Training System is a logical first step in formally educating or retraining operators. The program, started by the US Bureau of Mines and continued by McDonnell Douglas Electronics Co. under contract with the US Department of Energy, was installed and evaluated at DOE's Carbondale Mining Technology Center in Carterville, IL, last year. It is now being operated by Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. System Description The Dragline Training System addresses specific environments and work practices encountered during an actual mining operation at a midwestern US surface mine. This area was chosen because of its high number of strip mines using large walking draglines. Most draglines in the region are Bucyrus-Erie 1370, 1450, and 2570 models, so the dragline trainer was patterned after the company's 1370 machine. Operating and emergency controls are sufficiently standardized for most large walking draglines, and peculiar dynamics and responses from any specific dragline can be programmed into the computer system. The computer simply prompts the user to select the manufacturer and any peculiar response or rate changes needed. A 46-m3 (60-cu yd) bucket is simulated, but for closer simulation, various bucket configurations can be provided. Dragline Trainer The dragline trainer uses the TV-model simulation technique. A scaled model of the dragline is positioned in a model mine. A television camera is positioned at the operator's theoretical eyepoint, and the view captured is projected into a large screen in full scale. The screen is positioned in front of the operator seated in a full-size cab at Bucyrus-Erie controls. By manipulating the controls, the trainee can operate the model dragline and observe its reaction in the television display. In addition to housing dragline controls and consoles, the wooden, oversized cab contains the digital computer, terminal, video recorder and monitor, power switch box, air conditioner, and has enough room for the instructor and five student observers. The 50:1 scaled dragline model contains servo-controlled functions for hoist, drag, swing, delta swing, and longitudinal and lateral position. The delta swing provides bucket lag during swing and a realistic pendulum action when the swing is terminated. The over-responsive second order servo system is designed to provide hoist, drag, and swing rates exceeding present draglines. In all cases, position servos are used for better control and sta¬bility. The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. Point load strength (Is50) and slake durability (ID2) indices provide a measure of the strength and durability of rock fragments and are related to the alteration intensity and frictional resistance of the materials. Samples were collected from the rock piles, alteration scars and debris flows at the Questa mine with the purpose of examining relationships between Is50 and ID2, mineralogy, chemistry, weathering, hydrothermal alteration, and other geotechnical parameters. The Is50 from the various rock piles ranges from 0.6-8.2 MPa and the ID2 ranges from 80.9-99.5%. The Is50 and ID2 results indicate that the samples from the debris flows are stronger (average Is50= 4.0 MPa and ID2= 98.4%) than the rock-pile samples and that the alteration scar samples are weaker (average Is50 = 2.8 MPa and ID2 = 89.2%) than the rock-pile samples, but still most of these rocks are strong in terms of their Is50 and ID2. The Is50 decreases as the degree of alteration increases in some rock pile and alteration scar samples, but not in all. However, the majority of the rock fragments within the rock piles still indicate high strength, even after 25-40 years of weathering.

Determination of the state of a mine fire is an important function during firefighting and during rescue and recovery operations. It is imperative that an accurate, up-to-date assessment of fire conditions be available for persons directing such activities in order to avoid unacceptable risk to mine rescue teas and/or fire fighters. Many indicators which consist of ratios of the concentrations of fire gases have been developed over the years for determining the state of a mine fire. Results from numerous gas sample analyses are necessary for determining the trend of the fire. Some indicators are preferred because the influence of sample dilution, a frequent problem, is said to be eliminated. Definitions and examples of indicator6 found to be useful in diagnosing recent western U. S. coal mine fires are presented. Mine gas explosibility is an important subject also requiring rapid assessment. Example explosibility calculations are presented applying one widely used method. Establishing limits for withdrawal of personnel are discussed.

Role of mine and mill data Companies employ a variety of information systems to allow employees to accomplish their operational tasks, and each worker is focused on the metrics, or key performance indicators (KPI), for his or her individual function. For example, machine operators monitor throughput and cycle time to keep the machines running continuously and to meet daily production quotas. Meanwhile, the maintenance teams monitor machine performance, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and meantime between failure to predict and help prevent downtime.

The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) has been successfully applied to two very different tunneling projects in the U.S.. In the case of Pittsburgh's Mt. Lebanon Tunnels, two original design alternatives were prepared. The NATM alternative incorporating a reinforced shotcrete final lining was successfully bid and constructed. At Washington Metro's (WMATA) Section B-10 Glenmont Route, Wheaton Station and tunnels, a NATM value engineering redesign was prepared for the low bidder. The design incorporating a waterproofing system based on a PVC membrane between the initial and final linings was accepted by WMATA. In both cases, European experience and standards were meshed with U.S. standard practice. Examples of NATM flexibility as an original design and as a value engineering proposal are presented.

Shovel operators are one step closer to having a better tool to operate and monitor their equipment. The development of a unified shovel interface is proceeding into phase three, focused on producing a standard application programming interface (API) for connecting onboard devices. This solution will positively impact safety, performance and productivity, and is the result of collaborative work driven by the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG). Proof of concept revealed During the spring of 2013, Peck Tech Consulting was engaged to develop the working proof of concept (POC) software implementation, which integrates multiple vendors? systems into a single interface using one-to-two displays. As a result, the GMSG developed a functioning, manipulatable, unified shovel interface proof of concept and unveiled it at the World Mining Conference in August in Montreal. The proof of concept effectively provides a unified operator interface that pulls together the many divergent systems onboard large shovels.

The modem copper industry presents an excellent opportunity for the application of clean, environmentally friendly techniques using currently available hydrometallurgical technologies. This paper briefly reviews key events in the development of modern hydrometallurgy in Chile. Discussion is given to those prominent events whose impact continues to be felt on most projects currently underway. Mention is also made of the foundations of heap leaching technologies, preceded by agglomeration and acid curing, known as the T.L. Leaching Process, the cornerstone of more recent developments. A review is also presented of the leading copper hydrometallurgy projects of the 1990s. A list of those projects, their tonnages and the estimated date of implementation is provided. The conclusion provides an overview of developments in research and the trends in the implementation of copper hydrometallurgy projects in Chile for the coming years.

Western bituminous coal can be processed to low sulfur liquid fuels by fast reactions. A process (LEFCO) under development at the University of Utah uses coal and catalyst under hydrogen pressure to convert 60 to 70 percent of the coal matter to fuel liquids and gases. Coals have been processed in small diameter (less than 1/2 inch) tubes and at reaction residence times of less than 10 seconds. Effects of process variables on the yield and quality of products have been studied. General features of the process and the properties and characteristics of the products produced are presented. Special features of the process that distinguish it from other liquefaction processes under development are also discussed.

Variations in designs between belt cleaner systems are so wide that it is impractical to establish a dimensional stan- dard. The number of variables that affect the efficiency of belt cleaners is too great to assume a required number or style of cleaners for broad classifications of bulk solids or typical applications. The amount of carryback remaining on the belt is more dependent upon the characteristics of the bulk solid and the physical parameters of the conveyor system than it is on tonnage of material conveyed. Therefore, a performance-based standard is proposed. Three levels of cleaning performance are proposed: • Level I cleaning is general specified when concerns about carryback are not critical. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level I performance are single or double cleaner systems with one-piece blades undergoing poor to average maintenance. Frequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level II cleaning is generally specified when carry- back is of concern but does not create a safety or environmental problem. Cleaning systems normally associated with Level I1 performance are multiple cleaner systems with segmented blades undergoing the manufacturer's specified maintenance. Regular but infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level III cleaning is generally specified when con- cerns about carryback are critical. Concerns range from safety to environmental to product contamination. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level 111 performance are multiple cleaner systems in conjunction with at least one low- volume water spray. Scheduled inspection and the manufacturer's specified maintenance would have to be performed to maintain a high level of cleaning performance. Difficult-to-clean bulk materials may require the use of a washbox system with multiple cleaners using a combination of low-volume eater sprays to lubricate the cleaners and high-volume sprays to keep the washbox and discharge piping freely flowing. Further addition of a water and sludge recycling system reduces the amount of water that ends up in the product to a negligible amount. Very infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will be required. PURPOSE The purpose of this proposal is to propose a standard method for specifying belt cleaner systems based on user expectations and equipment performance over time. DEFINITION In bulk solids handling by conveyor belt, carryback is the material that adheres to the belt after the belt discharges its cargo. PROPOSED STANDARD Required Basic Good Practices There are a number of basic design and operating principles that are good practice for the selection, installation, and maintenance of belt cleaning systems on conveyors in order to achieve "standard belt cleaning performance over time. 1. The Belt Cleaning System shall be designed to meet the performance requirements based on the worst operating conditions and worst bulk solids proper- ties that are expected. 2. Each conveyor discharge point shall be designed to readily accept the manufacturer's recommended minimum number of belt cleaners. In addition, the discharge chute shall be designed to accept, with minor modifications, at least one additional cleaner if it is required.

Interstate 70 running into the mountains west of Denver, CO is the main access to the state?s numerous ski areas and other tourist attractions. As such, the highway is a vital part of Colorado?s economy. Due to the mountainous terrain in which it winds, I-70 is limited to two lanes in either direction. And, during the past few decades, the volume of traffic has increased to the point where motorists encounter major delays, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading west from Denver, and then again on Sunday evenings heading east. In the past, those delays occurred mostly during the ski season. However, many of the mountain towns have been successful in turning their resorts into year-round vacation destinations. A good move economically, but the pressure added to I-70 has caused even greater traffic delays, sometimes to the point where some Front Range residents avoid trips to the mountains.

The limitation of sulfur dioxide in power plant emissions dictates that sulfur in coal be reduced to the lowest possible level before combustion so as not to aggravate the emission control problem at the stack. For coal fired power plants, the methods in practice to achieve low sulfur coal include mining areas with relatively low sulfur. reducing sulfur in the mined coal through preparation techniques and blending high and low sulfur coals. A prerequisite to the successful implementation of any of these practices is the knowledge of the spatial distribution and the capability to predict sulfur values in a coal seam.

My recent experience has been with wet tropical environments, which address a different set of concerns than Nevada, for example. Spraying rather than drips are required in most cases just to assist the water balance requirement, and my comments address those situations. Most tropical operations are faced with both extremely wet and very dry seasons, with some having multiple cycles during the year. A heap leach operation must address the rate of solution building up within the ponds and how long the volume must last until the next rainy season. It may be easier to construct sufficient pond volume to permit yearlong operation than by discharging excess solution now, and searching for water later. Pond capacity requirements can help with the following: Consider using the solution that could be locked up in the pads during leaching to assist water balance problems. Spray excess solution continuously onto spent ore that would not be normally be sprayed again to "soak up" the excess solution, and stop spraying when the water balance is low, allowing the solution in the spent ore to return back into the system-with or without cyanide added. In a multiple lift system, if intermediate HDPE liners are planned for solution grade control, have drips placed before the HPDE liner is in place. The drips can distribute excess precipitation throughout the lower lifts to control the water balance, while the most current lifts are being leached and sent directly for the preg pond. With only 2 million tonnes (2.2 million tons) of spent ore involved, up to 200,000 cubic meters (53 million gallons) of solution could be moved into or out of the water balance system, if proper methods are designed and installed. That is equivalent to one meter (40 inches) precipitation falling on a 200,000 square meter (2.2 million square feet) pad area. You may even get a little bit more gold recovered as the solution drains from the earlier pads, as well.

Florida’s ancient beach ridge sand deposits, mined for construction aggregate, are highly variable. Rinker Materials utilizes a small reverse-circulation drill rig to prospect and profile unconsolidated fine aggregate deposits more effectively and inexpensively than other drilling methods. Sample data is stored in a spreadsheet that calculates yield and volume. Rinker also uses a Trimble ProXR backpack GPS to locate boreholes in the field, track mine progression on a monthly basis, and to map restrictive features such as wetlands. Autodesk Land software is used to create detailed deposit maps and mine plans. Rinker believes that these practices have led to improved awareness of deposit characteristics and deposit utilization.

Looking back on the second half of the 20th century, future historians, I believe, will be fascinated by two major political upheavals. The first is the environmental revolution in the 1960s. It erupted in the United States and parts of Western Europe and then swept across the rest of the globe like a wild fire. The second event is the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was the last of the world's great imperial empires. With its demise went central planning as a viable economic system. History, I suspect, will see this second revolution as an offspring of the first. This is because economic and environmental issues were largely responsible for the unraveling of the Soviet Union.

Digital systems have been employed in industry as an aid in process evaluation and control for about 20 years. The earlier systems were quite simple and did little more than periodically scan a multitude of process variables, perhaps comparing them to alarm limits, and print out the results. As time passed, the needs of industry and the imagination of process engineers became more demanding. Rather than perform only alarm checking and logging, operating guides were generated to help the operator gain optimum performance from the process. Eventually, systems were entrusted with the job of manipulating the set points of the local analog control loops in a (DDAC) digitally directed analog control mode. Today digital systems are used to gather all-the process information, including both analog and digital variables; to make the necessary data manipulations; and to control the process end elements in a (DDC) direct digital control mode. During these years of transition from the very simplest systems to the complex systems of today, the demands upon the system engineer have been every increasing. The process engineer has required, among other things, more computational ability at high speeds, faster input and output rates, greater flexibility, better communication facilities (man-machine interface), (process oriented software), and finally, greater reliability at lower cost.

This paper summarizes the benefits ofusing an in-situ analyzer in a sampling and valuation program. The tests and studies cited quantify the problems associated with current conventional sampling techniques and contrast conventionally-obtained results with those obtained through in-situ analysis. Data are presented to show the improved precision in valuation resulting from the in-situ method. Greater precision in estimating the mineral content of unmined ground becomes increasingly important as mines strive for optimum exploitation of their deposits. As the following analysis shows, the variable distribution of minerals within a deposit, along with the difficulty and the cost of high density sampling limits the precision which is currently possible in practice. An inherent problem exists in the conventional method of sampling. The erratic values of ore grade necessitate the collection oflarge numbers of samples for statistically accurate valuation and ore reserve estimation. Owing to the cost of manpower, current sampling techniques do not allow for the collection of sufficiently large numbers of samples. The most common method of sampFng in current practice is chip sampling, although bulk sampling is sometimes used. The intent of sampling is to obtain an estimate of the value of blocks of ground prior to mining. This information is used to plan the rate and sequence of mining, yet the sampling intervals which are possible in practice cause these block estimations to be ubject to considerable uncertainty. This inevitably leads to mcorrect mining decisions which may be vy costly.

"Accounting for changing duty cycles in equipment matching maximizes equipment utilization and productivity. The objective of this study is to investigate if the optimal number of shuttle cars for a particular panel width is optimal in different segments of the panel. In this study, discrete event simulation (DES) is used to determine the optimal number of cars that maximizes productivity in each segment. Data from a real-life mine is used to validate the model. The study shows that the optimal number of cars for the entire panel may not be optimal for some of the defined segments. INTRODUCTION Fleet optimization is important for efficient mine management. Deploying the optimal fleet minimizes the capital and operating expenditure for particular operating conditions and production targets. In an operating mine, with an already existing fleet, deploying the optimal fleet maximizes productivity or minimizes production cost with the available resources. Hence, a lot of research has focused on how to determine the optimal fleet size for a mining operation, given particular operating conditions. Mine managers and engineers have successfully used discrete event simulation (DES) to determine the optimal fleet size in mines (Michalakopoulos, Roumpos, Galetakis, & Panagiotou, 2015; Awuah-Offei, Osei, & Askari-Nasab, 2011; Ben-Awuah, Kalantari, Pourrahimian, & Askari-Nasab, 2010; Govinda Raj, Vardhan, & Rao, 2009; Yuriy & Vayenas, 2008; Kwame Awuah-Offei, Temeng, & Al-Hassan, 2003). In most cases, the published work on this topic involves determining the number of hauling units to be matched to a loading unit. Many of these examples involve truck-shovel optimization. There are, however, some underground mining examples. For instance, we recently concluded work that involves fleet optimization in underground room and pillar (R&P) coal mining (Awuah-Offei & Anani, 2015). Generally, when DES is used in fleet optimization it involves three steps: (1) Build a valid model of the mining system capable of predicting the required outputs with varying fleet composition; (2) Design and conduct experiments that vary the fleet composition across all feasible options; and (3) Determine the optimal fleet based on the results of the simulation experiments. A major decision in the first step is which outputs should be modeled. Some examples in the literature include productivity, unit cost, loader utilization, queue length, and hauler waiting times (Awuah-Offei et al., 2011; Govinda Raj et al., 2009; Kwame Awuah-Offei et al., 2003). Often, more than one of these outputs are simulated and considered as the objective function of the optimization."

Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions.
