The method of conditional simulation is easily implemented on the personal computer when the LU decomposition algorithm of Davis (1987) is employed. This algorithm is fairly compact, yet can generate moderate-sized simulations in a few minutes on a 80286 or 80386-based personal computer. The application of conditional simulation presented here is to generate possible ore inventories from a limited amount of exploration sampling. The simulations can then he examined to decide if the potential inventories are sufficiently attractive to proceed with further exploration. An example showing one application of this approach is presented.

Membrane technology has been available for about 30 years, but has been used very sparingly within the general mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral wound element construction, pretreatment equipment and element cleaning techniques have improved the reliability and robustness of membrane based systems. These improvements have expanded the potential to use this "new" technology to enhance critical recoveries of gold and silver in heap leaching operations or in the extraction circuit. Another opportunity for the mining industry will be to use membrane technology in new processes like controlling organic acids or ammonium thiosul­fate to enhance gold and silver extraction during leaching opera­tions. Finally, the most common use for membrane technology is for the control of mining water balance and acid mine drainage issues. Polymeric membranes, specifically thin-film composites, have been developed that will purify, fractionate or concentrate gold or silver. Recent applications have been developed for spi­ral wound modules that operate across the pH spectrum from 0 to 14. Systems using membranes have been constructed that operated on feed streams from 200° C to 3000 centipoise. Most recently, membrane based systems have been pilot tested suc­cessfully to purify solvents, like LIX. Opportunities exist to apply membrane technology to concen­trate gold and silver cyanide solutions with thin-film composite Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes at elevated pH values above 10. Incorporating membrane technology could allow one to increase production without incurring additional expansion of the gold extraction side of the process. Furthermore, free cyanide is not rejected by the Reverse Osmosis membranes, but other inorganic salts are rejected 98+%, thereby, allowing an essentially ion free, except for the free cyanide, to be recirculat­ed back to the heap leach operation for enhanced extraction.

INTRODUCTION The selection of the optimum coal preparation plant flowsheet is a vital part of the development of a new plant or the expansion of an existing facility. Selection of an inappropriate flowsheet or individual equipment items can result in costly production losses, or needless expenditures or redundant or oversized equipment. The accuracy of the flowsheet selection process is, like most decisions, heavily dependent upon the amount, reliability, and quality of the database. A flowsheet which is based on simple borehole information from an area that has experienced little or no previous mining activity must necessarily include significant allowances for uncertainties. However, a plant which is to be built at an existing mine with good information on run-of-mine (ROM) coal quality, as well as bulk washability data and accurate projections of future quality, can be optimized. The following chapter will describe the processes which should be followed to select the most appropriate flowsheet for each unique operation. They include: 1. Examining and adjusting the washability database to reflect the ROM feed. 2. An evaluation of clean coal specifications. 3. Selection of the level of washing required. This includes no washing, if the coal is already at the desired specification, all the way through to complex total washing circuits for metallurgical grade coals. 4. Selection of the appropriate circuit such as dense medium bath vs. Baum jig. The most appropriate circuit is generally determined on the basis of economics. An approach for performing the evaluation will be desired. 5. The steps that need to be followed to develop a balanced plant flowsheet. ADJUSTING WASHABILITY DATA It is not unusual to have as many as 10 to 20 sets of washability information available for a particular mining property. These may be a combination of core and bulk samples or all bulk samples. In the latter case, they may also be face and/or ROM samples. It is necessary to reduce all of this information to a single set of washability data that is representative of the mean feed to the proposed preparation plant. This set is used to compare the clean coal yield and quality characteristics of the various flowsheet options. The term "representative" has some serious negative connotations. It is recognized that ROM coal quality will vary throughout a mine. However, over a period of 250 to 350 days per year, certain trends can be established. If possible, this "representative" sample should be close to the coal quality of the mean daily sample in terms of raw ash and sulfur contents, clean coal yield, and clean coal ash and sulfur content. We have developed a layer-by-layer deposition technique for preparation of nanocomposite particles. Using this process, it was possible to make nanocomposites of various oxides with desired local composition and microstructure. The attachment of the shell particles to core particles was achieved using controlled polymer adsorption. Removal of excess polymer was accomplished without detaching the pre-adsorbed polymers by a specific stepwise washing scheme. The inherent chemistry of the process makes it easy to incorporate functional fillers over core particles. The nanosized filler materials will replace the shell particles in the present process and the polymer bridge would be chosen by taking into consideration the respective surface chemistries of various shell and core particles.

A key component of the Inland Feeder Project is the Riverside Badlands Tunnel, a7.9-mile stretch subjected to high internal and external hydraulic pressures passing beneath highly eroded hills in a semi rural environment. The tunnel presented significant design and management challenges to the project team. This paper describes the formula for project success used to manage the design of this complex pressure tunnel, from team member selection to the completion of all contract documents, on schedule and below budget. The project team dealt with sensitive regional and local community issues and won the trust of the community. The team included participation by senior management and recognized experts from inception to finish. The team worked diligently to build quality into design and adopted a claims avoidance approach to management and preparation of documents.

Geothermal and operational reasons in the German coal mining industry make it necessary to an increasing extent to climatize coal faces and headings by means of refrigeration plants. Air coolers installed on coal faces as well as in gateroads play an important part in such climatization. They must transfer, under difficult conditions, the refrigerating capacity supplied by central or de-central refrigeration plants from the chilled water to the air in the workings. The performance data of two new types of coalface coolers and of two different types of gateroad coolers were measured in two testing stations under different thermo- dynamic conditions with dust-free fresh air. As air coolers must be installed particularly at working points with a high .dust load the heat exchanging surfaces are fouled for the most part causing an essential reduction of the refrigerating capacity. The investigations therefore were extended to measurements with a certain dust load in the intake air of the coolers.

Because of air pollution control regulations in the early 701s it became necessary to clean effluent gases from the Morenci Reduction Works Smelter. Feasibility studies indicated that this could be accomplished most efficiently by using the smelter gaseous effluent to feed a sulfuric acid plant. Complying with air pollution control regulations thus created the need to dispose of relatively large amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid. Typical Morenci ores contain substantial amounts of oxidized copper minerals which are not recoverable by flotation. In addition, there is low sulfide, high oxide material which can be leached, but is not suitable for flotation concentration. Early in 1971 sufficent data had been accumulated to show that a leaching plant for the Morenci tailings could use a large portion of the sulfuric acid produced by the Smelter. It was determined that for all practical purposes leaching of the available copper was complete in two hours or less. Capital expenditures could not be justified for more than two stages of counter current decantation for recovery of the leached copper, and the plant was designed with these criteria in mind.

Identifying the optimum ultimate height for heap leaching ore requires the consideration of a number of competing factors. A primary limitation is the reduction in the permeability of the ore with increasing heap heights. At low permeabilities the heap can blind off, cause serious ponding and runoff, and become very difficult to rinse at closure. The authors present a laboratory methodology that has been successfully used on several projects to identify the maximum height for controlling heap permeability.

The sixth survey on the mining industry by Comann Associates provided data for entry-level and midlevel engineers as well as executive officers. Average 1989 compensation - base salary and anticipated bonus - for chief mining executive officers or chief mining operating officers: $237,943. This is an increase of 20% over the results of the last survey, on 1985 compensation. The latest survey also showed that bonuses for chief mining executive officers averaged 33% of base salary. Average 1989 compensation for chief executive or chief operating officers at mining operations with under $50 million in gross sales, $148,638; at mining operation with more than $50 million in gross sales, $275,141. The survey showed that these officers averaged 14 years employment with their present company, had five years in their present position, and had an average age of 54.

The Activox™ process is a new method for the pre­treatment of refractory gold ore concentrates prior to cyanidation. The process has been developed in Western Australia, and relies on a combination of fine grinding and pressure oxidation to achieve the destruction of sulphide minerals and the liberation of encapsulated gold. The process operates under much more moderate conditions than those that would typically be used for conventional pressure oxidation of similar concentrates. This results in significantly lower capital and operating costs being achievable.

Coeur Rochester Inc. located in north central Nevada, operates an open pit mine moving a total of 16 - 18 million short tons of material per year. A three stage crusher produces approximately 8 million tons of a minus half inch product that utilizes truck stacking to construct a heap leach with a zinc precipitation recov­ery plant. Coeur Rochester recovers approximately 6.0 - 7.0 MM ounces of silver and 60 - 80 K ounces of gold annually. Current metal prices and good operating practices require contin­ued review of operating systems that support the operation, thus the development of a Strategic Mine Plan. This Strategic Mine Plan provides managers, engineers and supervisors a means to improve their operations through three main objectives: 1. Reduce operating costs, 2 .. Increase production, 3. Increase mine life (reserves). These three main objectives will be reviewed in context to their current status and past performance.

Strategic design of groundwater monitoring programs can increase public confidence in mine management, decrease financial assurance requirements, and minimize environmental budgets. Monitoring of inorganics is challenging because many occur naturally with baseline concentrations fluctuating spatially or temporally. Evaluating monitoring data to distinguish between a hazardous release or a natural fluctuation in baseline concentration can be controversial. In order to develop an effective program, monitoring parameters should be selected which are mobile and stable. Statistical procedures should be customized to address the uniqueness of groundwater systems. Calculated baseline concentrations should minimize the false negative & false positive rate.

The Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom mine is a surface operation near Beulah, ND that produces more than 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy) of lignite. Coteau, a subsidiary of North American Coal Corp., ranks among the largest mines in North America. In 1994, Coteau ranked eighth in annual coal sales, becoming the largest mine outside the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. However, for the Freedom mine to stand alongside the Powder River Basin heavyweights, Coteau had to overcome several obstacles. These included a coal seam with three-quarters the heating value and overburden-to-coal ratios three times higher than Powder River Basin mines. Coteau's ability to compete has been built around a program of continuous improvements in productivity, cost efficiency and innovation.

The three key parameters of mine fires are local airflow velocity, temperature and oxygen concentration. According to the theories of seepage in porous media, heat transfer and heat dispersion, mathematical models were constructed based on the three parameters. The models can be used for early prediction of mine fires and for estimation of the level of spontaneous combustion. Proper use of the models can assist in preventing and controlling mine fires. Extractive industry (mining and quarrying operations), as other industrial activities, is subject to environment protection laws, regulation and standards such as the Environmental Impact Assessment directive, Natura 2000, Habitats & Birds directive, Water Framework directive etc The European Commission (EC) is aim to strengthen the EU environmental legislation to improve the (environmental and human) safety of mining activities. The mineral processing and the management of the mining waste will be covered by the new amendment of the Seveso II Directive, by a Best Available Techniques reference document (BREF) describing the Best Available Techniques of mining waste management and a new directive on the mining waste management. At the same time initiatives as the environmental liability, the energy taxation for environmental reasons and the natural resources management policy, which will have a positive impact on the protection of the environment, will affect the extractive industry operation procedures.

Ion exchange resins may in the future displace activated carbon in gold plants where cyanidation is practiced. Recently patented technology based on interpenetrated polyurethane polymers shows that these new materials offer significantly improved loading kinetics over both activated carbon and commercially available ion exchange resins. These polymers are not restricted either in particle size or in density and therefore offer the gold industry the potential for a further technological advancement.

The MIT tunneling group has developed, over the past decade, a number of decision support tools for the geologist and engineer, planner and designer, owner and contractor involved in underground construction. These computer based tools can be used in the planning and exploration stage of a project, in predesign and design, in construction planning and during construction. Tasks as different as optimizing information collection during exploration and during construction, as selecting major design alternatives in predesign and modifying design during construction, as providing cost and time estimation and considering social and physical environmental constraints, can be handled. Output can be in the form desired by the user ranging from geologic profiles (cross sections) to management reports.

Impervious zones in copper waste heaps create a problem in contacting the rock with leaching solutions. These zones are normally associated with compacted layers .formed on the surface of each lift by dump truck traffic and by disintegration of the rock exposed to atmospheric conditions. These layers are usually only a few feet in depth--but, nevertheless, act as barriers to vertical flow causing the leach solution to perch in the heap, Consequently, much of the rock remains untouched and the leach solution breaks out the side of the heap instead of continuing downward to bedrock. One solution to this problem is breaking the hard pans with explosive charges. However, to use explosives means adopting new explosive materials and methods. To use this process successfully requires finding answers to operating conditions inherent to waste heaps. Foremost among these are: (1) type and size of casing that can be used because of limitations brought about by drilling problems, caving and, corrosive conditions; (2) perforating the casing at required levels; (3) an explosive capable of being pumped; (4) obtaining detonation of the, main charges through, the wail of the casing; (5) an explosive with the ability to propagate through the voids of the rubble and one which is not affected by water, acidic solutions, or back pressure conditions from hydrostatic heads; (6) to heave and rupture the compacted zones without chambering or recompressing the waste material.

Screens serve several important functions in CIL and CIP processes for gold extraction. One important screen application known as interstage screening allows slurry to be continuously transfered through a series of CIL or CIP tanks while retaining activated carbon in the tank. In some cases, this has been accomplished by using airlifts to carry slurry containing activated carbon to an external screen which separates carbon as oversize and returns it to the tank by gravity. The undersize slurry advances to the subsequent tank. More recently this has been accomplished using launder screens and Kambalda type screens. These are essentially static screens that rely on air blasts or mechanical sweepers to clear carbon away from the screen surfaces.

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter.
