Traditionally mining and conservation have been regarded as opposing and mutually exclusive concepts of land use. Often problems are anticipated which cannot be substantiated by facts. In addition, an ill defined time-scale adds to potentially emotive issues. Examples from Australia and elsewhere are presented which illustrate the dynamic nature of the environment and accentuate sequence patterns in plant community development following natural and man-made disturbances. The mining industry generally appears to be aware of the environmental impact of mining and whilst endeavouring to minimise the disturbance, is still orientated towards maximum production.

While sustainability itself needs to be redefined in a selfless way, methods of measuring and optimizing it also need to be reformulated. Gone are the days when we had the luxury of abundant resources and the freedom to extract values in self-centered ways. In the past, focus has been mostly on reagent performance, processing operations, and upgrading of tools to maximize rather than optimize value extraction from the earth's crust. Today we as extractors face a new set of challenges that include value separation from low quality resources including wastes, but within the energy, environment, and societal constraints. Development of such technology depends on understanding the role of entities and concepts such as bio-molecular interactions at surfaces, forces involved in inter-granular versus intra-granular fracture in new fragmentation methods, robotic in-situ or extraterrestrial mining, exploiting new membrane and nano technology, use of new sensors and actuators for detection and separation and computation capabilities for faster and economical processing. Equally importantly, we need to communicate with everyone what we foresee and anticipate when we extrapolate the type-performance-cost relationship of ores to the era ahead of us and establish viable schemes for ecological survival. The novel attachment timer apparatus presented in this paper serves as a diagnostic tool that allows the detection of changes in bubble-particle attachment probability and therefore floatability caused by alterations in the chemical environment and particle properties. The apparatus consists of six identical capillaries where bubbles with defined size are produced simultaneously in a measurement chamber. The bubbles at the capillary tips are placed in contact with the submerged particle bed for specific time periods, controlled with the help of automatic actuators. The advantage of the instrument is that hundreds of bubble-particle contacts can be measured automatically within a short time period. Microscopic pictures of each measured bubble are taken while recording the movement of the bubble before, during and after contact with the solid particles. The recorded pictures can be used to determine the actual bubble size and its corresponding deviation, and to detect the attachment of particles. The attached particles are collected in a detachable chamber for subsequent characterization. Furthermore, the device is portable and can be taken to the mineral processing plants for quick evaluation of particle-bubble attachment efficiency with particles and process water sampled directly from real processes.

National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

Investigations were undertaken to evaluate peroxygen compounds for effective­ness in alkaline cyanide leaching of gold. The addition of peroxygens improved the leach results. Calcium peroxide was the best performed reagent to be employed. Improved reagent consumption followed the trend of calcium peroxide> hydrogen peroxide> no peroxygen addition. In general, preaeration stages could be eliminated, and improved leach rates achieved with no detrimental impact on leach perfor­mance. Interox has not developed an Au Plus (Trade Mark pending) system to utilise this new leach reagent. Initial plant trials are verifying its potential to give additional benefits.

Wet kata cooling power (WKCP) as measured by a kata thermometer is a well-known heat stress index used in the mining industry. Although, over the years, several researchers proposed different heat indices and indicated limitations of the kata thermometer, WKCP is used in the South African gold mining industry due to its simplicity and rapidity of assessment. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the newly developed empirical expression for the WKCP and some of the more commonly used empirical models. For this purpose, WKCP measurements are obtained based on experiments conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel. Based on a regression technique, the analysis presented aims to assess the disagreement between the empirical model predictions and actual measurements. The correlation is also presented between WKCP and the well-established thermoregulation models using parameters from the low-speed wind tunnel experiments, including dry-bulb temperature (Td), wet-bulb temperature (Tw), barometric pressure (P), and wind speed (v). It is found that the proposed empirical model for the WKCP represents the bioclimatic interaction quite well under the specific parameters that defines the harsh thermal environment and air condition, such as metabolic activity, clothing of the person, and the velocity of the ventilating air in which the person is working. The statistical analyses performed show that the empirical model proposed for the WKCP produces satisfactory estimates of the thermal stress experienced under lower air velocities, light clothing, and higher metabolic activity rates.

"This paper focusses on the strength or capacity of cable bolts and introduces a new perspective for cable bolt design by demonstrating that mining-induced stress changes may affect cables in a detrimental manner. The concept underlying a novel cable bolt pull-out resistanceor bond capacity model is described and its practical significance is demonstrated by application to a simple two dimensional scenario of a fall-of-ground.A number of practical implications emerging from the application of this model are discussed to provide guidance to ground control personnel jar improving cable bolt support systems in mining applications. These include cable layout optimization, use of cable pre-reinforcements, assessment of embedment length requirements, need for plated cables (or straps), use of bird-caged cables (or buttons), and grout quality issues.IntroductionDuring the last decade, cable bolting has become a standard support technique in mining for handling wide spans, reinforcing are passes, preventing or reducing dilution of ore in marginally stable stopes, and for many other rock support need s.In its infancy, many deficiencies in cable bolt supports resulted from improper installation techniques and, in particular, grout quality control problems and the use of empty breather tubes (Goris, 1990). The development of special grout pumps and fail proof placement procedures (Oliver, 1992; Bourchier and O'Flaherty, 1992) have eliminated many of these early problems. Nevertheless, there are still situations where cables seem to lose their capacity during mining, and in these cases the cables do not provide the expected and needed ground support. In some instances, cables perform extremely well, whereas in others the same support layout and quality of support installation seem to be insufficient, allowing falls-of-ground or progressive cavings to occur."

"The objective of this study was to gain a better insight into the kinetics of chalcocite leaching in an acidic ferric sulfate media. Chalcocite leaching in acidic media is known to occur in two sequential stages, with the first stage being much faster than the second. The leaching residue from the first stage is typically assumed to be a covellite type of material. This study hypothesized that the mineralogy after the first-stage leaching varies in response to different leaching conditions. We investigated the dependency of the mineralogy of the first-stage leaching residue on temperature and initial ferric concentration. The experimental results showed that chalcocite leaching behavior altered upon temperature and initial ferric concentration. A proposed combined reaction model was found to be able to describe the experimental data. The first stage was described very well by the shrinking core diffusion model while the second stage was described very well by the shrinking core chemical reaction model. This finding has important implications for mine operations to manipulate leaching conditions to create the desirable leaching kinetics.INTRODUCTION The kinetics of chalcocite leaching in sulfate media has been extensively studied (Cheng & Lawson, 1991; Fisher, 1994; Fisher, Flores, & Henderson, 1992; Niu, Ruan, Tan, Jia, & Sun, 2015). Sedimento II oceanographic cruise, on board of the B/O El Puma, shows a new high anomaly or phosphate associated with shelf sediments from the south Mexican Pacific. Recently, were found two anomalies in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, that are located to the east of this new anomaly, that is related to muddy sands and rock fragment debris. The latter shows values of 17% P205. The phosphate occurrence is probably associated with red tides locations that usually are found in sites where sediments are phosphates enriched. These findings suggest that south Mexican Pacific is of potential interest for P205, in waters with high nutrients values. The possibility of a more regional occurrence of phosphate, from California to Chile is suggested.

In a marked departure from conventional practice, the Power Plate process combines the two unit operations of leaching and electrowinning into a single continuous step for direct recovery of copper from sulfide concentrates, cement copper, copper scrap, and copper oxide slurries. Considering how environmental controls are pre- venting development of smelters for additional capacity or new construction, the Power Plate process provides a welcome pollution-free alternative to the smelting-electrorefining routes. And its low capital investment and low operating costs also recommend it to copper producers who are now using or investigating various hydrometallurgical methods.

Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corporation (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corporation, is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, Utah. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL's primary product. The GSL Sulfate of Potash Complex The GSL potash complex (depicted in Figure I) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar,evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 Km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season, and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit con¬taining primarily kainite (KCl-MgSO4.3H20), schoenite (K2SO4?MgSO4^ 6H2O), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KCl.MgCl2.6H20) and epsomite (MgSO4.7H20). Other minor minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. "With the increasing demand for minerals, technologies to maximize mineral recovery are paramount to a mine’s economic success. Many mining process waters have the potential to form calcium-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, the solution to inhibit these deposits is the implementation of a chemical antiscalant program. This paper examines the application of a fouling analyzer to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scale in mining process streams. The fouling data can be used to compare antiscalant programs and to optimize antiscalant feedrates. Case studies validate the ability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery processes.INTRODUCTION The mining industry uses significant quantities of water. From quarrying, to crushing, to flotation, leaching, and refining, water is often the integral motive force to move slurries, separate or agglomerate fines, and extract and purify minerals. As well, water is used in a number of ancillary applications at mines, including dust suppression, gas scrubbing, and utility processes such as boiler, cooling, and waste water operations. For many processes, the quality of water being used is inconsequential. However, for certain processes, such as flotation, leaching, and desorption / stripping, water quality plays a key role in the ability of the operation to economically recover the target minerals. Dissolved solids such as calcium and magnesium salts can concentrate in process waters, exceed their solubility limits, and precipitate as scale on metal surfaces such as feed and transfer pumps, piping, and equipment. Some of the more common scales that form in mining operations include calcium carbonate (CaCO3, or calcite) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4, or gypsum), and to a lesser extent, calcium and magnesium silicate compounds. Any scale that deposits in a process stream will negatively impact mineral recovery, and increase the operational costs of the mine site. Whether it is acid washing a scaled heat exchanger in a carbon strip at a gold operation, replacing plugged emitter tubes in a leaching operation, or hydroblasting process lines in a scrubber unit, there are costs associated with labor, cleaning chemicals, repairs, and replacement parts. These costs pale in comparison to the potential costs of downtime and lost production, should the scale deposits occur in a process that is critical to the recovery of the target mineral."

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. Accurate determination of platinum group metals (PGMs) and gold (Au) has always proven to be a difficult task, due to their low concentrations in platiniferous ores. The most common preconcentration technique used in analysis of these metals is fire assay with a flux containing nickel or lead. This technique can be improved by using co-collectors. Here we hypothesise that Fe, Co, and Cu can be used as co-collectors to enhance separation and preconcentration of PMGs and gold by fire assay. To test this hypothesis, geological exploration samples from Siyanda Union Mine (Northam, South Africa) were analysed by an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) for PGMs (Pt, Pd, and Rh) and Au. A control sample (certified reference material AMIS 0426) was also analysed by the same technique. The PGM and Au recoveries from the control sample ranged from 83% to 105% for all three co-collectors, with relative standard deviations less than 10% for the control sample and 7% for the geological samples. The PGM and Au recoveries by Fe and Co co-collectors were modestly higher than that of the Cu-collector. These results indicate that Fe and Co are better co-collectors than Cu, presumably due to the loss of analyte when using Cu. Taken together, Fe and Co co-collectors can be viable alternatives for analysis of PGMs and gold using the fire assay method.

A new preparation scheme for a difficult-to-float coking coal from the Kailuan Mine, Tangshan, China was investigated. The results showed that grinding followed by column flotation was beneficial for obtaining products with low ash content. The positive effect of grinding on the coal floatability is attributed to the liberation of intergrowths and coal surface improvement. Tests indicated that 10 minutes was the optimum grinding time, and over grinding resulted in a deterioration in flotation performance. With a grinding time of 10 minutes, conventional flotation had potential to yield a product with around 12.42% ash content and 69.15% combustible recovery. Column flotation can reduce the product ash content to 11.15%and increase combustible recovery to 74.47%. Consistently better flotation results reveal that column flotation is more efficient than conventional flotation for such fines.
