APPENDIX B - DEVELOPMENT OF FOAM-CONCRETE SLURRY MINE SEALANT 1. Introduction This appendix describes the results of an experimental development and laboratory evaluation of foam-concrete as a rapid setting, lightweight, self-supporting mine sealant material. Foam concrete, otherwise known as Aerated Concrete, is a form of lightweight concrete whose structure consists of air bubbles held together by a hardened cement mortar. Its principal applications are found in roofing, insulation, shock absorbing, and backfill. The air bubbles in foam concrete are formed either by chemical reaction in the wet, placed mortar, or by introducing a stable foam into the mortar during mixing. The mortar is usually a cement slurry with fine sand or fly ash as filler. Our attention focused on preformed foam concrete, since this is most adaptable to field applications. Equipment is available,* which simultaneously mixes and pumps a slurry of foam concrete. Such a slurry can be produced at a rate of up to 50 yards/hr and has been pumped in a 2-inch-diameter hose 1000-feet horizontally and 250 feet vertically up without significant bubble deterioration. For a user interested in using the program as it exists, Sections B 2, B 5 and B 6 are particularly useful. The program listing (B.6) can be used to prepare a card deck and the data cards can be punched from the directions given in Section B. 2. Typical input data and output printout summarized in B 5 provides guidelines for the program use. Sections B 3 (Program Nomenclature) and B 4 (Subroutine Description) describe, in detail, the inner workings of the program and are particularly useful for a user interested in modifying the program.

The current rulemaking on mine illumination makes it necessary for mine personnel to have an understanding of the behavior of light. They must be able to understand many terms that are new to the industry and must be familiar with the use of various types of photometers. With this knowledge, the enforcement criteria for mines can be understood and compliance can be maintained.

This paper "On Coal" was published in three issues of The Western Gleaner in 1814. Name of author is not given. This magazine was started by Cramer, Spear & Eichbaum, in Pittsburgh, Pa., in December 1813, and ran for about two years. Copies are very rare, and this one is made from an original in the Darlington Library, University of Pittsburgh. This is almost certainly the first general article on coal published west of the Allegheny Mountains, and one of the earliest in this country. ON COAL Its Natural History-Mining of Coal-Phenomena occasioned by Fire-damp-Method of Coking-Distillation of Tar from Pit-coal-Gas-light-Coal, a Manure I. NATURAL HISTORY OF COAL There are few productions of nature which present to the philosopher a wider field of investigation than pit-coal. A substance highly inflammable is found in the deep recesses of the earth, sometimes loaded with numerous superincumbent strata of hard rock, and extending frequently along with these strata through a vast expanse of territory. Though metals may be said to be inflammable substances, as they combine more or less rapidly with oxygen when placed under particular circumstances, yet the character of rapid combustion with disengagement of light and heat, seems to belong. principally to such substances as are derived either from the animal or vegetable kingdom. That this is probably the case with regard to coal we are further induced to believe, by the remarkable circumstance, that the chemical analysis of this natural production yields especially, though in various proportions, those materials which constitute essentially the vegetable. And if any thing was wanting to confirm, us in that opinion we might trace in a number of fossile substances the gradual transition of the vegetable into the state of mineral coal. This fact is so intimately connected with the natural history of coal, that we cannot think it superfluous to give it some farther development. Among the great number of principles which the chemist is capable of tracing in the vegetable kingdom, the presence of extract, resin and fibre seem to form the characteristical marks of plants.-If vegetable matter be boiled in water, and the water, after having been strained and filtered, be exposed for some time to the open air, a flocculent precipitate takes `place from every part of the liquor; which soon subsides to the bottom of the vessel containing it. This is the extract; altered, indeed, by exposure, and now no longer soluble in water, a change which is supposed to depend on the absorption of oxygen; and if, by any means the proportion of oxygen be increased, the extract gradually becomes of a darker color, blackens, and approaches to the state of charred wood.

APPENDIX C - HOISTING SYSTEMS - AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT C 1 - Introduction A survey has been made of available hoisting equipment which has applications for use in metal and non-metal mine emergency escape hoist systems. The information was gathered from a number of sources, including representatives in the USBM and MESA, mine operators, personal visits and telephone interviews with manufacturers, field visits to inspect equipment, advertisements, catalogues and indices of manufacturers. Wherever possible, technical specifications and prices were checked out with the manufacturer, or supplier. The sections on individual sub-systems and components, such as automatic control systems, winches and controls, are not intended to be all encompassing surveys. Rather a reasonable number of representative units in each category are discussed. The sample is large enough to provide a general picture of the kind of equipment available, including the abilities and limitations and a reasonable price range. Scaling Law for Fly Ash Crater Formation The scaling law derived for predicting crater diameters at different scales is developed below by considering the equation of motion of individual fly ash particles. It is assumed that the air drag on each particle is characterized by Stokes flow, and at the borehole - passage intersection the air velocity and the fly ash particle velocity are the same. The equations of motion for a fly ash particle are the following, (see Figure C-1).

As stated in the preface, the nomenclature to be adopted for weights and measures has presented great difficulty. Agricola uses, throughout, the Roman and the Romanized Greek scales, but in many cases he uses these terms merely as lingual equivalents for the .German quantities of his day. Moreover the classic language sometimes failed him, whereupon he coined new Latin terms adapted from the Roman scale, and thus added further confusion. We can, perhaps, make the matter dearer by an illustration of a case in weights. The Roman centumpondium, composed of zoo librae, the old German ceniner of 100 pfundt, and the English hundredweight of 1112 pounds can be called lingual equivalents. The first weighs about 494,600 Troy grains, the second 721,900, and the third 784,000. While the divisions of the centumpondium and the centner are the same, the Libra is divided into 12 unciae and the pfundt into 16 unizen, and in most places a summation of the units given proves that the author had in mind the Roman ratios. However, on p. 509 he makes the direct statement that the centumpondium weighs 146 librae, which would be about the correct weight if the centumpondium referred to was a ceniner. If we take an example such as " each centumpondium of lead contains one uncia of silver", and reduce it according to purely lingual equivalents, we should find that it runs 24.3 Troy ounces per short ton, on the basis of Roman values, and 18.25 ounces per short ton, on the basis of old German. If we were to translate these into English lingual equivalents of one ounce per hundredweight, then the value would be 17.9 ounces per short ton. [ ]

Since the advent of coal mining, the minimal lighting in the under¬ground working place has been an obstacle to the safe and efficient performance of the miner's many tasks. Compounding this problem is the fact that the machines being operated in the working place are so large that the vertical and horizontal clearances around the machinery are severely limited. Consequently, in these poorly lighted and congested working places, the machine operator is unable to utilize his peripheral vision. He cannot see hazards as they develop and, too often, cannot react in time to avoid serious injury or death to himself or his fellow miners. The greatest hazard to miners inby the last open crosscut is from falls of roof which are often preceded by warning signs such as falling rock fragments, roof supports taking weight, or a sudden reduction in the height of the working place. These warning signs often go undectected because the machine operator's attention is focused on the small circle of light emitted from his cap lamp. Congress recognized the illumination deficiencies, and, in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, charged the Secretary of the Interior with the authority and responsibility for development and promulgation of minimum standards for illuminating working places in coal mines. These standards have been developed and, as stated in the April 1, 1976 Notice, Federal Register, Volume 41, No. 64, will be promulgated on October 1, 1976, as mandatory regulations under Section 75.1719, Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations. The regulations require that the designated surfaces within the miner's normal field of vision be illuminated to 0.06 foot-lamberts while self¬propelled mining equipment is being operated in the working places. The term "working place" is defined in the Act as "the area of a coal mine inby the last open crosscut".

During the latter part of the Civil War an income tax was placed upon coal and the production of coal in the various collection districts during the life of this tax is shown in the tabulation that follows. The counties that include coal deposits are shown for each district. No record exists now of the production by counties, but it is calculated here on the basis of tax collected. The table, of course, does not include any territory not under the control of the northern armies, and not all of that in some cases.
