"Prior to 2003, most high rise structures in Honolulu, Hawaii were supported on driven pile foundations, extending through shallow coral strata and bearing in competent formations at depths of 100 ft (30 m) or greater. In 2003, the 40-story Hokua Tower became the first building in Hawaii to use continuous flight auger (CFA) piles for support. These piles derived most of their capacity from side shear in the shallow coral formations, which reduced their required lengths to less than 100 ft (30 m) sand significantly increased their capacity. Not only did CFA piles prove to be more efficient and cost-effective than driven piles, but the reduced noise and vibration associated with their installation made them and drilled piers the foundations of choice for most mid- to high-rise projects going forward. Because drilled foundations were new to Hawaii, it was necessary to develop effective design parameters for the unique soil and rock conditions found within this urban area. While drilled foundations were found to have many advantages over driven piles, construction techniques had to be modified to compensate for extensive voids in the coral formations. This paper presents a compendium of the data derived from numerous full scale, instrumented load tests conducted during the past decade and provides guidance for the design and installation of CFA and drilled pier foundation systems in areas having geologic settings and history similar to that of Honolulu.INTRODUCTIONThe State of Hawaii is one of the most remote areas in the world, lying nearly 2400 miles (3800 km) from the nearest continental land mass. In spite of this vast distance, the population of the islands has grown to over 1 million people, the majority of whom live within and in close proximity to the City of Honolulu on the Island of Oahu. The city is densely populated with over 400 high rise apartments, condominiums, hotels and office buildings located within 5 miles (8 km) of the city center (Fig.1). Nearly all of these buildings have been constructed within the past 50 years."

Since 2001, the AMIRA P420 gold processing technology project series has been studying the recovery of gold using gravity devices, with particular emphasis on the centrifugal units, Knelson and Falcon concentrators. THE state of development of its iron and steel industries serves as a 1eading index to the general condition of a nation's business affairs. In this paper, the authors present an economic study of the progress of this group of industries in Canada for the decade 1927-1936. The statistical data and most of the tables which accompany this article have been com-piled by John Casey, Statistician, Bureau of Mines; the text and some of the computations have been prepared by the seni0r author. The principal source of statistical information has been the publications of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics; where other sources have been consulted, they are noted in the text. All weights are given in short tons. Records for the years 1913 and 1918 are also presented in the group of tables dealing with iron ore and pig iron; they will serve as a basis for comparison with nearly normal years in the two decades prior to 1927-36, which included the abnorma1 years of the Great War. GENERAL REVIEW At the beginning of the decade under review, this group of industries had returned to almost normal production, as determined by pre-war conditions. Iron ore consumption showed a steady increase between 1927 and 1930; a marked decline began in 1930 and reached its culmination in 1932, when the recorded consumption of ore was 293,353 to11s, about 16 per cent of the average consumption during the first four years of the decade; the last four years of the decade show a gradual increase in consumption; the amount of ore used in 1936 was still slightly below the amount used ten years before, in 1927 (see Table 1, top).

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Standardised stream-sediment sampling procedures have been used in mountainous and hilly terrains. Special sampling procedures were developed for application in remote environments, such as high mountains, desert, semi-desert, karst and loess-covered regions. The diversified analytical methods used in more than 20 analytical laboratories participating in the project have been unified into two multi-element, multi-method analytical systems. A unified data monitoring procedure was developed based on primary and secondary standard samples. To date the project has covered about 4 000 000 km2 and the aim is to complete the coverage within the present decade

THE correct sampling of coal and coke is becoming important to an ever increasing number of producers and consumers. This, therefore, may be an opportune moment to examine where we stand with regard to existing and proposed methods. In this paper an attempt will be made to review, as briefly as possible, some of the considerable amount of painstaking research which has been done in the last 10 years, and which has unquestionably led to a much better understanding of the subject. In so doing we shall try, on the one hand, to make clear where substantial progress has been made, and on the other hand, to draw attention to points that require further investigation. The paper is divided into sections in order to emphasize the major divisions of the subject; further, in order to retain this emphasis, detailed consideration of some of the points has been relegated to appendixes. No attempt has been made to give a complete survey of the literature, as this has already been done by L. A. This paper discusses a study that investigated different underground bulk air heat exchanger (>100 m3/s) design criteria. A literature review found that no single document exists covering all design criteria for different heat exchangers, and therefore the need was identified to generate a guideline with decision analyser steps to arrive at a technical specification. The study investigated the factors influencing heat exchanger designs (spray chambers, towers, and indirect-contact heat exchangers) and the technical requirements for each. The decision analysers can be used to generate optimized, user-friendly fit-for-purpose designs for bulk air heat exchangers (air cooler and heat rejection). The study was tested against a constructed air cooler and heat rejection unit at a copper mine1. It was concluded that the decision analysers were used successfully. This tool (decision analysers) can be used by engineers for the efficient and cost-effectively design of heat exchangers.

Commonwealth of Australia (2016) defines rehabilitation as comprising “the design and construction of landforms as well as the establishment of sustainable ecosystems or alternative vegetation, depending upon the desired post-operational land use”. For open cut coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales, the question of how to apply this intent to pits at mine closure is repeated for hundreds of individual pits. In EISs, closure plans and public discussion, assorted treatments are proposed to rehabilitate pits. While some aspects of final voids have been intensively studied, there is little guidance on how to choose a final void treatment option that delivers the optimal outcome against rehabilitation goals. For example, in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley commonly proposed rehabilitation actions include reducing the angles of pit walls; however, with few voids successfully rehabilitated to date there is limited understanding of what different wall slopes will achieve.CITATION:Henderson, S and Hocking, A, 2018. A decision support system for the management of the mineral resources of a developing country has been derived. The system allows the evaluation of the impact of a mineral project in a developing country in the broad context of its economy. The analysis permits the assessment of the overall socio-economic consequences of mineral prospects and allows incorporation in the evaluation of issues that are broader in scope than the pure financial objectives. The system is built around the Leontief framework of economic analysis. The original input-output model, enhanced to incorporate country-specific behaviour is integrated with cost-benefit analysis and shadow pricing. The analysis leads to synthetic measures of profitability at market and shadow prices. These measures are useful to direct the mineral policy of a developing country through the exploitation of those mineral resources which are most likely to bring about economic growth and social advancement.

Mine planners frequently face the challenge of mitigating the impact of climatic events on mining operations, such as floods and droughts. Specific water management infrastructure can be implemented to meet operational requirements in response to these events. However, the effect of flood protection, for instance, may reduce the resilience of the site to drought. The probability and duration of unfavourable climate sequences significantly influences the net present value (NPV) of implementing specific water management infrastructure.Good life-of-mine planning will consider the incremental development of the project, and provide staged development plans. Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.

In this paper, a methodology for a computerised recognition of joint sets on 3D point cloud models of rock masses is presented. The process starts with classifying joints on a 3D rock mass surface through training a deep network architecture and validated using manually labeled datasets. Then, individual joint surfaces are identified using the Density-Based Scan with Noise (DBSCAN) clustering algorithm. Subsequently, the orientations of the identified joint surfaces are computed by fitting least-square planes using the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC). Finally, the joint planes are classified into different joint sets, and the dip direction and dip angle for each set are calculated. The performance of the proposed methodology has been evaluated using a case study. The results show that the presented procedure is fast, accurate, and robust.

Roof bolts are an essential component of roof support systems in underground mines. They are used to provide structural support to the roof of the mine and prevent it from collapsing. Therefore, it is imperative to perform regular assessments of these roof bolts to avert any hazards. Manual investigations of roof bolts are done by surveyors in underground mines, which is extremely timeconsuming and challenging due to the low-light conditions in underground mines accompanied by stringent mine access rules. To this end, automated recognition of roof bolts in 3D point cloud data obtained through laser scanning in underground mines serves as a potential solution to aid roof bolt monitoring. With the continuous advancements in laser scanning-based 3D data acquisition systems, the feasibility of making such surface estimations from 3D point cloud data has increased severalfold.

NOT long ago an engineering study was made to determine if the time had arrived to lower the head of standing water in abandoned Rock Springs mines Nos. I and 3 of The Union Pacific Coal Co. so that this water would not become a menace to the future operations of adjacent mines or mines developed on seams lower in the coal measures. This survey resulted - in a decision to unwater the No. 1 mine workings and, incidentally, the old No. 3 mine workings by drilling a large-diameter hole from the surface to an opening in No. 1 mine at the sump below 21 entry, provided it was found practical to operate a large-capacity, vertical, deep-well pump under the existing conditions. Over the past decade, the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry's injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked and injury rate. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992-2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dike intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. These metasedimentary rocks have undergone three phases of folding: a first phase of recumbent folds (F1), a second phase (F2) of northerly-trending inclined folds with a prominent crenulation cleavage, and a third phase (F3) of steeply plunging folds. The granite porphyry dike has a thickness of up to 40 m and intrudes thin lamprophyre dikes along its contacts. Deflection of the crenulation cleavage around the granite dike, shearing within the dike and its sinuous outcrop pattern indicate that the granite dike has been deformed during F2 and F3. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with a first stage of magnetite-ankerite alteration. This first stage is cut by a second stage of quartz-pyrite veins and a third stage of sulphide, quartz and ankerite veins, accompanied by pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile¦pyrite-ankerite-sericite assemblages. Lamprophyre is altered to an ankerite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. The sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite. The altered granite and the veins have been deformed and recrystallised. The competent sulphide minerals pyrite and arsenopyrite are fractured and brecciated, with fractures locally filled by galena, a ductile sulphide mineral. Vein quartz shows local cataclastic and mortar textures and develops pressure shadows around arsenopyrite. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre. These features together with the style of veining and the sulphide mineralogy indicate that the mineralisation was formed from a magmatichydrothermal fluid that was sourced from the granite. Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope values of the vein minerals (quartz, ankerite and sulphides) are also consistent with a magmatic source.

In the presence of joint sets sub-parallel to a slope face, the stability of the rock mass is controlled by the shear strength of the joints. On one hand, if the joints are persistent their shear strength can be assessed according to Mohr-Coulomb criterion, assuming appropriate values for the cohesion and the friction angle on the joint surface. On the other hand, if the joints are non-persistent with their continuity being interrupted by the presence of rock bridges, their shear strength will increase considerably. In this latter case, the contribution of the rock bridges to the shear strength of the joint has to be accounted for in order to better assess the stability of the rock mass. A numerical analysis of the progressive failure of a rock slope involving a non-persistent joint has been set up based upon simulations performed using a Discrete Element Method (DEM) algorithm specifically enhanced for the modeling of jointed rock masses. Pre-existing discontinuities are explicitly accounted for in the model by using a modified contact logic that ensures an explicit and constitutive mechanical behavior of the joint planes. In addition, rock bridges can be spatially distributed along these joint planes following a prescribed probabilistic technique. Jennings’ formulation (Jennings, 1970) is considered as one of the first rock slope analysis that evaluates the shear resistance to sliding as a weighted combination of the shear resistance of the intact rock and the joint planes. The validity of this formulation is discussed in the present study. Contrary to the Jennings’ formulation, we show that tensile failure is an important mechanism, particularly as the dip angle of the sliding plane increases.
