In coal mining, geophysical techniques have an established application in determining the location of seam boundaries ahead of the face so that underground mines can be planned to avoid any geological structures that might disrupt production. Geophysics can also be used in geotechnical studies to determine the in situ properties of the rock mass and the response of the rock mass to the mining. The use of geophysical logs and microseismic monitoring in these geotechnical applications are discussed in this paper.

"The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a seven-electron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. The number of electrons transferred in the carbonate and sulphate salts suggests that the sulphur is oxidised to a thiosulphate intermediate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+. The Cu+ and Fe2+ is subsequently oxidised in solution in non-Faradaic reactions. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O32- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, however observations made on the mineral surface after leaching do not support the formation of elemental sulphur. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis of the mineral surface suggest presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper under the ammonia–ammonium sulphate conditions, an iron-rich surface layer under ammonia–ammonium perchlorate solutions and absence of surface layer build up under ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different approaches to hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be carried out. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base-metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation 1 (Beckstead & Miller, 1977a):"

The incorporation of low cost technology transfer to increase the ability of locals to acquire and maintain long term employment are key ingredients for sustainable industrial development. Alcoa’s Alumar plant on the island of Sao Luis is the largest and most modern refinery/smelter complexes in northern Brazil. The plant has one of the most advanced Environmental, Health, and Safety management process in the aluminum industry. Technical assistance, training and financial support were made available to Alumar to address social sustainability issues. Through several programs led by employees on a voluntary basis and applying intensive and extensive training programs, Alumar has enabled local people to develop skills on agriculture and land management, wastes minimization, small business development and administration, all based on sustainable development and social responsibility concepts.

Drainage of water from abandoned underground mines has become important in recent years because of safety concerns when mining near abandoned works or reentering abandoned mines for further development. Seepage from inundated mines causes environmental damage and may threaten homes and communities. Where topography permits, horizontal drilling can provide a quick and cost effective method for solving trapped water problems. The mechanics of the horizontal drilling operation as applied to water drainage are discussed in this paper.

Problems with the stability and performance of rockpasses in deep-level mines are common. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the recorded performance of rockpasses in deep-level gold mines. Records relevant to the geological environment in which the passes are excavated, their excavation details, and their historical performance are not at all well documented on mines. In general, the quality of data available from mines is poor. The investigation showed that very large spans frequently developed in passes during use, and that rock mass quality, the orientation of the pass with respect to the dip of the strata, and the magnitude of the stress acting normal to the axis of the pass were the main factors of influence. From the historical information obtained, the risks of instability in rockpasses are identified.

For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.

An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. As we enter the new century and close out the old, it has become standard procedure for most blasters to complete a blasting log or shot report following a blast. However, how can you be sure these completed blasting logs are worth the paper or electronic space they occupy.3 Is the recorded data accurate and meaningful? Will the blasting logs stand up under investigation? This paper will attempt to define the purpose of a blasting log, illustrate common mistakes, discuss potential problems, and indicate steps that a company or individual blaster can take to improve and protect against costly errors. The end result will be a reminder of the importance of accurate documentation following a blast that must be given the same individual effort as went into the blasting itself. This paper will also attempt to achieve a proactive training resource to improve the use of blasting logs. A completed blasting log is, quite possibly, the only witness to the overall credibility of the work of the responsible blaster. The log may remain perpetually silent, only to end up in a file that is moved progressively with time to various levels of long-term storage. But, will this silent witness be ready to speak out should a concern arise from the blasting ? Will the blasting log communicate with authority and credibility, or will it be ridiculed by investigation and silenced in shame with costly adverse results for the blaster and company? It is not enough to simply complete a blasting log. The information it contains must be accurate enough to stand the test of time and arduous scrutiny. Unfortunately, most blasters and their associated blasting companies do not realize the status of the silent witness until it is too late.

Anisotropic behaviours of OhshimaOshima granite were investigated by carrying out uniaxial compression tests, together with observations of microcracks under an optical microscope. The elastic modulus tensor of Oshima granite at 10 per cent strength,E10, were calculated using theoretically formulation of elastic modulus tensor in terms of the second-rank crack tensor for pre-existing open microcracks. Furthermore, with the assumption of orthorhombic elasticity, the nine moduli of Oshima granite E10were determined by uniaxial compression test. Twenty-onemoduli of samples, calculated without assuming any symmetry, also showed orthorhombic features. Direction of the symmetry axes agreed well with the orientation of preexisting cracks. Comparison of crack tensor-based formulation results with the experimentally determined one show that the anisotropy of elasticity of Oshima granite is caused by pre-existing open microcracks, not by pre-existing healed microcracks and also crack tensor formulation can be used, as a first-order approximation at least, to describe the anisotropy of Oshima granite induced by pre-existing open microcracks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das anisotrope Verhalten des Oshima-Granits wurde mit Hilfe voneinachsigen Kompressionstests und durch die Betrachtung von Mikrorissen unter einem optischenLichtmikroskop untersucht. In rock cutting mechanics, the effects of the rock and coal brittleness on the efficiency of cutting bits are examined by many researchers. There is no universally accepted brittleness concept as a measure of cutting efficiency. The effect of the brittleness on rock cutting has not been completely explained. The aim of this study is to correlate the relationships between Specific Energy (SE) and brittleness concepts. The applicability of various brittleness measurement methods for rock cutting efficiency has been investigated. In this study, the raw data derived from previous experimental studies were used, and the relationships between SE and brittleness concepts were investigated. The two previously used brittleness concepts, which are named as B1 (the ratio of compressive strength to tensile strength) and B2 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), and a new introduced brittleness concept named B3 (the area under line in relation to compressive strength and tensile strength) were evaluated in this study. The relations among these brittleness concepts for rock cutting efficiency were established using regression analysis. There is no correlation found between the SE values and the brittleness of B1and B2values. But, the SE is strongly correlated with the brittleness of B3. It was seen that the suggested brittleness of B3concept could be used as an indicator in rock cutting efficiency analysis.

Loy Yang Power (LYP) owns and operates a 2160 MW brown coal fired, base load power station in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia (Loy Yang A). It also owns and operates a brown coal mine that supplies fuel to its own power station and a nearby 1000 MW power station owned by International Power (LoyYang B). The mine supplies 32 Mt of coal per annum from an open pit, which is currently about 4 km long by 2 km wide and 180 m deep. LYP has 500 employees and a substantial amount of work is also carried out by contractors and consultants. GHD Pty Ltd(GHD) has been contracted to provide mine planning and earth sciences expertise. GHD is an international professional services company that operates globally in many market sectors including mining, industry and the environment. The company has major offices in Melbourne and also within the Latrobe Valley. This paper sets out the experiences that GHD and LYP have gained in establishing a unique alliance arrangement for GHD to provide a range of mine planning, earth science, dam surveillance and environmental services to LYP. The underlying philosophy of the alliance is to closely align the objectives of the two companies such that GHDÆs recompense for service delivery is proportional to the benefit achieved by LYPÆs business. Quality of service, whole of life costs and risk management are important aspects and are reflected in key performance indicators against which GHDÆs performance is measured. Currently GHD provide 20 000 hours of labour to LYP per annum, which are delivered by up to 120 staff who possess the required diversity of skills. The paper explains how the contract was initially let as a conventional service agreement and explains why the contract was transformed into an alliance. It then illustrates the operation of the alliance with reference to the 2006 work program. The paper concludes with thoughts on how the arrangement can be further developed for the future to the benefit of both parties.

"Abstract After noting the importance of standardization for piles, the European system is described (execution, tests and design, etc.). Some important aspects of Eurocode 7 are outlined (like the role of pile load tests). Finally, the calculation methods in the recent French standard for the design of piles following Eurocode 7 are shortly addressed.Importance of standardization for piles Like for other fields of geotechnical engineering, pile engineering is a complex art. For piles, the challenges are particularly numerous and many things must be mastered properly: - the soil investigation must be serious and adequate (for instance, deep enough!);- the choice of the pile type and the assumed behaviour must be assessed in order to reach a safe and economic design of the overall foundation;- the execution itself (construction and/or installation) deserves special attention and must follow strict state-of-the art rules.The geotechnical engineer, in charge of the design of a pile foundation, must have in mind the parameters linked to the variety of soils, of soil conditions and of pile types. A wide range of strong environmental issues are also to be considered: minimum disturbance during the execution processes, long-duration friendliness of the “inclusions” into the ground (to avoid pollution of the soils and waters, for instance) and respect of the neighbouring structures.Pile engineering plays in a world which is constantly moving and progressing: constructions expand in new difficult areas, actions on piles are more and more important, new execution techniques of piles are developed, research into the complex behaviour of pile foundations has no end, etc. Our views on how piles and group of piles really work are constantly evolving!"

The obligations of the European Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major accident hazards, the so-called Seveso II Directive, became mandatory within the E u ropean Member States February 3, 1999. Explosive products have been included within the Seveso II Directive, in the categories of substances capable of generating a major accident. In addition to taking “all measures necessary to prevent major accidents,” explosive manufacturers are also obliged “to limit their consequences for man and the environment.” However, for explosives in particular, no pro c e d u res, nor specific re f e rence values for damage calculation, are given either in the Directive or in the corresponding Italian Legislation, “Ministry of the Environment decree of 20 Oct. 1998.” This article presents a simplified but scientifically rigorous approach for the first approximation calculation of the effects on the surrounding area following an accidental explosion. As an example of the method of calculation, the damage areas in a hypothetical explosives manufacturing facility, as shown in F i g u re 1, will be anal y z e d . "INTRODUCTIONOn November 10, 1982 Nor and a Inc signed an agreement with Golden Sceptre Resource Ltd. and Goliath Gold Mines Ltd. to construct a mine and milling facility.The Golden Giant mine is located in the Marathon area of north - western Ontario, immediately north of Highway 17 and about- 3.5 km west of Highway 614.With the exception of selected unit processes, the mill was designed for a nominal throughput of 2500 tonnes per day with early operating data to be used to identify sections requiring possible expansion to achieve an ultimate throughput of 3000 tonnes per day.Commissioning of the highly instrumented milling complex which includes crushing, grinding, cyanidation, and carbon in pulp processes commenced in February 1985. After water testing various sub-circuits from grinding through tailings, waste ore was introduced to ensure proper mechanical and electrical operation of process equipment.The first ore was milled as a mixture with waste on March 4, 1985. The first gold bullion was poured April 6, 1985.Initially, ore was only available from mine development at a rate of 700 t/d, which was milled at a minimum rate of 1200 t/d. While regular weekly shut downs of two to three days was useful for mechanical maintenance, changes, and modifications, process tuning was more difficult due to the non-steady operation. As increased quantities of ore became available, regular weekly shutdowns tapered off and process operation improved accordingly. For testing purposes and as ore was available, mill throughput was increased regularly to 2300 t/d and for very short periods of time to nearly 3000 t/d.No major design or operating problem has been encountered to date. The following is a brief description of the milling process and various operating highlights. Process flowsheets are shown in Figures 1 through 6."

We still need to innovate, but it is getting harder. The real price of metals is declining, return on shareholder value is lower than other industries, and there is a shorter-term focus on staying viable in a capital-intensive industry where timeframes for implementation of new technologies can be long (+I5 years). In this environment, the levels of R&D spent by major minerals companies are remaining steady at around 0.2%-0.5% of revenue. This is not large and to remain viable in the future, we need to be smarter about the way in which we do R&D. The mining industry is a knowledge-based industry. Driving down the cost curve demands innovation, which demands knowledge. To be smarter and more effective in our approach to innovation, a new paradigm is required Generating, capturing and using knowledge has evolved from Mode 1 (discipline based and clear distinction between basic and applied research) to Mode 2 (multidisciplinary, team-based approached with flow between basic and applied activities). Mode 2 is now seen to be much more efficient and to deliver better appropriability (Tegart 2003). To survive, we need to innovate, and the best way to do this is collaboratively. Some examples and pointers for the future will be given in this paper. THE CURRENT SITUATION The Rand report and other recent studies have painted a grim outlook for the mining industry. The real price of metals continues to decline (Figure 1) and profit margins remain thin. This is reflected in shareholder returnwhich are well below other industries (Figure 2)-and current management strategies-which reflect something of a "survival mode." Traditional vat leaching methods have had limited success, primarily due to the high cost of loading and unloading the vats. In general, such batch methods are labor-intensive and costly. Heap leaching has emerged as a viable, low- cost alternative, but low recoveries, normally in the 70% range, offer opportunities for improvement. Also increased regulatory guidlelines for effluent and spent heap leach pads disposal offer potential for alternative methods. The Mackie Vat Leaching Jig (MVLJ) has had its incubation at Ortech International, where bench scale through pilot scale testing continues. Design developments and testwork over the past two years indicate that the time may be right for field trials.

The flash furnace is used for smelting concentrate to (i) high-Cu matte and (ii) molten metallic copper. It is also used for converting solidified/crushed matte to molten metallic copper. This is flash converting. It consists (Table 20.1, Fig. 20.1) of: (a)tapping molten 65 to 72% Cu matte from a flash smelting furnace (b) granulating the molten matte to ?1/2 mm particles in a 103 m3/hour water torrent (c) crushing the granulated matte to 50 µm in a vertical roller mill (d)drying the crushed matte (e) feeding the dry particulate matte to a second flash furnace for oxidation converting to molten copper. In 2000, flash converting is being used by Kennecott Utah Copper (George, et al; 1995; Newman et al, 1998, 1999a,b). A second installation is being designed for the Chuquicamata smelter (www.outokumpu.com [October 12, 2000]), The potential uses of flash converting are: (a) as the second half of a flash smelting/flash converting coppermaking sequence (b) as a continuous converting alternative to batch submerged tuyere converting. This chapter uses our flash furnace matrix to determine the %O2-in-blast, industrial oxygen and oil requirements for converting solidified 65% and 72% Cu matte to molten copper. It then discusses choice of feed matte grade and other aspects of the process.

In open pit mine planning and design, push back mine sequencing is widely used for long-term production planning. In push back design, a series of nested pits is generated and then considered as possible push backs with regard to the minimum push back width requirements. These nested pits are produced by parameterizing on one economic parameters like commodity price, mining or processing cost, stripping ratio etc. The most important characterization of these push backs is that the inner most push back has the highest value per ton, the second inner most push back has the second highest value per ton and so on. These nested pits are generated based on the best estimates of grade within a representation of the ore body in a three dimensional matrix form. Therefore, the inherent uncertainty associated with reserve estimation (for our discussion grade uncertainty) is not taken into account when push backs are designed. These methods do not attempt to establish which part of the deposit is likely to be worth most. This paper introduced a new algorithm that incorporates ore grade uncertainty during push back design process. The suggested strategy tries to seek to schedule risky blocks later in the extraction sequence.

This paper provides an overview of the current use of backfill for ground support in underground metal mines in the United States and a summary of recent accident data reported for these mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Backfill mines comprise a major part of the underground metal mining industry and are particularly important in terms of the fatalities and injuries impacting this workforce. Ground falls are the leading cause of fatal accidents at these mines accounting for 50 percent of the total fatalities (4 out of the 8 fatalities that occurred from 2006 through second quarter of 2011). MSHA reported several different types of accidents involving backfill at these mines. While backfill ground falls do not occur frequently, these accidents result in a much higher proportion of fatalities than host rock ground falls. Backfill ground fall accidents are especially hazardous in underhand cut-and-fill mining operations where employees work directly beneath the backfill. An analysis of recent MSHA accident data supports the need for further cooperative research with the mining industry to identify and address ground control problems in underground metal mines using backfill.

U.S. mines are among the most efficient, productive and safest in the world. Much of that efficiency is due to the high-technology equipment and processes available to the industry. The U.S. mining industry can produce more material now with fewer people than it could a few decades ago. And that material can be produced more safely. However, the workforce is growing older and fewer young people are filling the holes created by retirements. Even though mining is one of the highest paid occupations in the United States, young people believe they can find jobs that pay almost as well without the risks and the often remote locations associated with mines.
