It was found that the high RPM and extreme fan wear caused a major maintenance problem. Water is controlled manually and gravity flows to a central sump box. LHD (load haul dumper) is now used as a loading machine for intermediate mechanization in underground coal mining. For survival in the intense competition in the global business environment in recent years it is essential that LHD machine should be reliable and maintained effectively and efficiently. This paper seeks to study the reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM)of an LHD machine with failure and repair data by Markov modelling. The constraints and reasons for machine unavailability are outlined. The reliability and maintainability of an LHD and its subsystems are evaluated. Possible modification or design alternatives are highlighted. Reliability and maintainability of an LHD system are disappointing. There is room to take decisions on optimal maintenance planning and machine improvement from this analysis. Keywords: reliability, availability, maintainability, Markov model, LHD

"This paper summarizes a comprehensive energy and cost study comparing an existing SAG mill based circuit at Huckleberry Mine with two proposed circuits involving comminution technologies which are associated with energy efficiency: high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and high speed stirred mills. The specific energy requirements expressed as kWh/t for the proposed circuits were determined from pilotscale HPGR and stirred mill testing conducted at the University of British Columbia. Samples and operating data were collected from Huckleberry’s copper-molybdenum concentrator to evaluate current mill performance for comparison. To support the base case, the SABC circuit was modeled using JK SimMet® software. The main comparison focused on the complete energy requirements for each circuit, including materials handling equipment such as conveyors, screens, feeders and pumps. This paper also provides capital and operating cost estimates for each of the comminution circuits. The results showed that the HPGR - ball mill circuit achieved a 21% reduction in energy consumption over the existing SAG - ball mill circuit at the same P80 grind size of 160 µm. At a grind of 80% passing 75 µm, the HPGR - stirred mill circuit showed a 34% reduction in energy compared to the base case. It was concluded that the energy reduction for the new flowsheets significantly improved the economics of the Huckleberry comminution duty.INTRODUCTIONUp until now, tumbling mills such as AG/SAG mills and ball mills have had a dominant bearing on the design and economics of comminution circuits. However, it is commonly agreed that the majority of employed comminution processes are energy intensive and energy inefficient, accounting for up to 80% of overall process plant energy consumption and having an efficiency of as low as 1% (Abouzeid and Fuerstenau, 2009; Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 2002). The U.S. department of energy reported that there is a potential to reduce energy consumption in the metals industry by up to 61% from current practice to bestestimated practical minimum energy consumption; suggestions included the implementation of best practices and the adoption of energy efficient mining and mineral processing technologies such as advanced blasting techniques, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and stirred mills (U.S. DOE, 2007)."

Technologies and systems used in the management of energy consumption in the mining and metal processing industry are well understood and documented from the supply side of the business. It is our contention that in many instances, through a more complete understanding of the demand side of the business, based on the detail of the operations plan, will provide greater lead time in terms of the design, implementation and utilisation of power supply infrastructure. Thus, optimal management of demand in a proactive manner, based on production requirements, will ensure both security of supply as well as continuity of operations. This paper describes the technology and methodology that is being developed to enable the above statement to be achieved. We use a case study to demonstrate the ability of the tools and methodology and conclude by outlining the business benefits achievable as well as the future developments emanating from this initiative.

For the second time in four years, the coal industry was brought to the forefront of the nation’s consciousness in 2006, as two separate events unfolded which involved coal miners trapped underground. Unfortunately, the tragic results of the 2006 incidents were not the same as in 2002 when the trapped miners were all successfully rescued. In January, two different incidents, both in West Virginia, focused the public’s attention on the dangers that miners face on a daily basis. As a result of these unfortunate events new legislation requiring improvement in safety in underground mines passed both at the federal and state level. In 2006, a total of 47 miners died on the job, matching the total number that occurred in 1995, and more than double the 22 killed in 2005. Notwithstanding those tragic events, coal production in the United States reached another record level in 2006, ending the year at 1.05 Gt (1,161.4 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2006 was 27.1 Mt (29.9 million st) higher than the prior record set in 2005 of 1.03 Gt (1,131.5 million st). Although coal production rose in 2006, U.S. total coal consumption actually declined for the year. Coal consumption decreased in the electric power sector by 1.1 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly. Only the other industrial sector had higher coal consumption in 2006, increasing by 0.3 percent. (Note: All percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports declined slightly in 2006, while coal imports again reached a record level. The excess production over consumption allowed total coal stocks to increase significantly during the year, as electric generators rebuilt their stockpiles that had fallen substantially in 2005 because of missed shipments in the second half of that year.

Surface properties of minerals could be modified selectively and very specifically by adsorption -desorption (dissolution) processes. This requires a monitoring and control of the outermost surface layer at a molecular and atomic level. The nature and structure of self-assembled submonolayers and monolayers at the interface of minerals were studied by infrared reflection spectroscopy. The external reflection spectra of the adsorbed monolayers on any type of minerals: transparent, opaque or non-transparent, recorded at different angles of incidence and for two polarizations are an excellent source of information about the nature and surface distribution of the adsorbed species. The developed method allows to obtain detailed information at a molecular level about the adsorbed surface species. By combination of the simulated and experimental data, the qualitative description of the adsorbed species as well as quantitative evaluation of orientation and the thickness of the adsorption layers were obtained. This fundamental knowledge allows to determine the mechanisms of surface phenomena which govern selective separations. Examples of different surfactant - mineral systems and industrial applications will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION It has been recognized for some time that major changes in mining methods will be required in the near future. Two types of factors contribute to this need for change. Intrinsic factors include ground control problems associated with mining at increasing depths, noise, dust, toxic fumes, and logistics problems which arise from operation in a cyclical fashion. Extrinsic factors include competition for labor from industries offering safer and less difficult work, pressure for less impact on the environment, and changing economic and political conditions. The search for new mining methods has resulted in extensive research being carried out on such novel approaches as thermal fragmentation, high-pressure water jets, sonic drilling, microwave fragmentation, and laser cutting, among others. Joy Manufacturing Co. has elected to concentrate on impact breaking in stopes as a first generation continuous hard rock miner. IMPACT BREAKING Fragmentation techniques show a drop in specific energy as efficiency improves. Specific energy is the energy consumed per unit volume of rock removed and is affected by such variables as rock material properties, fragmentation method used, operator skill, tool design, etc. Mechanical fragmentation methods generally have specific energies much lower than that of the more novel methods. Table 1 shows impact breaking to have an efficiency exceeded only by that of drill and blast methods and it is this high efficiency which led Joy to impactors as the subject for research on potential mechanisms for continuous mining in hard rock.

In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

Low-temperature carbonization product yields for 129 coals representative of 12 Utah coalfields were estimated, using regression equations developed from heating value and proximate and ultimate analysis data. It was shown that yields of char, tar plus light oil, water of decomposition, and gas, as well as the gas volume and the heating value of the gas, could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. Published and experimental results from eight Utah coals carbonized at selected temperatures in the 4500 to 1,000° C range were used to determine the effect of temperature on product yields. Carbonization temperature, heating value) oxygen, and volatile matter of coal appear to be the principal variables influencing carbonization product yields. Data presented show that the heating value and the residual volatile matter in low-temperature char may be predicted using relationships developed from proximate analysis data for 220 coals.

Mining operations are characterized by cost pressure and cycling product prices. A high potential for enhancing efficiency is the integration of all single steps of the mining working chain into a production process structure to make advantage of an optimized flow of material and information through the ?moving ore factory?. As modern mining machinery today is controlled electronically and even already operated autonomously, a smooth and cost efficient flow of data in the mining process will be crucial for cost efficient future mine operations. Therefor, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ?common electronic language? for easy and standardized data exchange between mining machines and central computer systems. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automated equipment. It shall provide easy ways of using multi vendor machine installations in data controlled mining processes. At the same time it reduces cost for individual development of interfaces for all parties involved. Standardized data exchange is also a crucial precondition to integrate the mining process into enterprise level modeling, cost analysis and decision finding systems. The standard?s technical architecture is open and flexible for future applications. It uses modern XML technology enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases as well as open on line networking. The IREDES work is carried out by the initiative members working jointly together in the technical work groups. Prototyping implementations of the Drill rigs profile are currently going on. Further profiles under development cover LHD?s/Loaders/Trucks and Explosives Chargers. The first official release covering the Drill Rigs profile is planned for the end of 2002.

"The alchemists' symbol for antimony is a diamond with a dot in the centre. The latin name ''stibium'' gives this mineral its chemical symbol ""Sb"" and the name to the principal ore containing antimony. This is Stibnite, a sulphide of antimony, and the valuable mineral at the Consolidated Durham operations. Stibnite chemically pure contains 71.69% antimony metal.Antimony is used in many forms, as an alloy in the production of metal products and as chemical compounds of oxides and sulphides. In Biblical times, antimony was used as a medicine and as eyebrow makeup.Today, the largest single use of the metal is as a hardener and strengthener of lead, and corrosion inhibitor in storage batteries. New applications for antimony in its oxide form as fire retardants are broadening the overall demand especially in the chemical, plastic and fabric industries. Other users include the Military for such things as tracer bullets, shrapnel, smoke screens and flame throwers. An unusual property of the metal is that it contracts when heated which has made it a valuable alloying metal in the printing industry, for heat shields on re-entry vehicles used in the space programmes, and also for the manufacture of bearings."

Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel's at the University of Toronto and Bliel's at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. On 16 July 2004, at 07:10 a collapse of about 1.8 million m3 (about 4 ½ million tons) took place on the north wall on Nchanga Open Pit. This collapse was the result of a developing instability that was first identified when the benches in this area were exposed during September 2002. The NOP geotechnical and survey departments closely monitored the development of the failure. Control measures were implemented to reduce risk to men and equipment. These measures were continually improved and adjusted in reaction to observations and changing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the monitoring results that were obtained both by traditional methods and the novel slope stability radar system (SSR). Difficulties encountered in establishing critical deformation levels and deformation rates that can be used to predict the onset of collapse are described. Details of the monitoring and control measures, which led to the successful completion of mining in the area, are also described in this paper.

THE HELIUM ACT (50 Stat. 885; 50 U. S. C. 161,163-166), as amended, places the responsibility for conserving, producing, and selling helium upon the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Bureau of Mines-the only producer of helium in quantity in the world. It operates 4 plants-I each at Amarillo and Exell, Tex.; Otis, Kans.; and Navajo (Shiprock), N. Mex. The demand for helium has increased steadily since the decline immediately after World War II and is expected to exceed the capacity of the present plants in the near future. The Congress has appropriated $6,000,000 far constructing a new plant. In addition to providing additional capacity to meet increased demands for helium, the new plant will enable the Bureau of Mines to better conserve the helium in, the Government-owned reserves at Amarillo and Navajo.

The basic ingredients of success required to remain competitive and still produce a quality product are creative design based on experience and sound engineering principles, plus practical aspects of constructibility. The three case histories describe creative design/construct approaches that benefited all parties. 1. Introduction The increasing demand placed on specialty contractors to provide cost effective buildable solutions to complex construction problems compels us in the industry to be highly innovative. The practice of geotechnical engineering is considered more of an "art" than perhaps the other disciplines within civil engineering largely because of the basic nature and variability of soil and rock. The geotechnical design engineer must have the knowledge of the components of his design and know the limitations of his equipment and labor force. Thus, for the design/build specialty contractor the potential for creation of unusual solutions to difficult problems is quite high.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop economical mineral dressing processes for removing objectionable quantities of impurities, such as quartz and pyrite, from refractory clay deposits in east central Missouri. The presence of excessive quartz in these clays causes crazing. Pyrite causes bloating and unsightly dark blobs on the surface of fired refractory brick. The iron concentration in the proper state of oxidation may also act as nucleation centers for carbon crystal growth which can result in bursting of the refractory. Numerous deposits, representing a very large tonnage, have been examined and prospected by various refractories companies and found to contain impurities in objectionable quantities. Upgrading these clays would greatly extend our reserves of high-quality refractory clays. Wet-tabling and wet-cyclone concentration were found to be effective for removal of impurities from clays. Of the two methods, wet-cyclone concentra¬tion would be cheaper and more effective. Although wet-tabling improved the refractory properties of each clay, beneficiation by wet-cyclone produced clays of superior quality. Clay recoveries by wet-cycloning ranged from 56.1 to 81.8 percent of the weight of the crude samples, and the beneficiated clays contained from 71.9 to 94.4 percent of the total alumina. The pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) was increased from 1 to 3 cones by wet-cycloning. The beneficiated clays also met the reheat shrinkage requirements on refiring to 1,400° C. Missouri is one of the major domestic sources of fare clay. In addition to deposits of high-grade refractory clays, there arc many deposits that contain small percentages of impurities, which render the clays unfit for the production of high-heat-duty firebrick. Development of methods to beneficiate these submarginal clays to usable materials would greatly increase commercial fire clay resources.

Over recent years the trend in Australia has been towards the definitions of sustainable development which emerged from the 1992 Rio Summit of retaining a commitment to ecological integrity, but also incorporating social and economic dimensions of sustainability. Sustainable development may be seen as maintaining and enhancing:natural capital: defined as all natural resources, both environmental and those of traditional economic value; manufactured capital: made by human kind; including produced goods, infrastructure and built environment; human capital: defined as the health, well-being, intellectual capabilities and spiritual welfare of individuals; and social capital: defined as social relations and institutions within and between societies, their norms and functionality (Ameef, 2002). This paper will endeavour to assess the challenges and opportunities facing the professionals and their Institute in the minerals industry in Australia because the MMSD Global and Regional Australia Reports do not, in the authorÆs opinion, adequately address the æhuman capitalÆ input into the current or future development of the minerals industry, in particular, the sustainability of the professionalsÆ skills, knowledge and experiences in a global context.
