The aim of any rock breaking activity is to achieve success by developing designs that are blasting objective-specific and geology-specific, and then implementing such designs. This paper targets mining geologists with the aim of extending their knowledge of the rock fragmentation processes and providing insights to the significant relationships between geology and blasting. There are two main relationships, and if mining geologists appreciate both these relationships, then they can play a key role in optimising production. The business risk continuum is introduced to support this understanding. The first relationship is between geology and potential blasting hazards, and the operational complexity required to manage those risks. The risks associated with eight different ground types are discussed in terms of ground conditions, hazards and controls. These types are: reactive ground, hot ground, geothermal ground, fibrous ground, cavernous ground, combustible ground, pyritic ground and conductive ground.The second relationship is between the bench geology and blasting results. The blasting results discussed include: muckpile characteristics, remaining rock faces and blasting emissions. In this regard, some detailed insights and graphical examples are given for the influence of geology on blasting emissions, in particular, vibration, airblast and flyrock.A detailed description of the geological materials themselves can convey much useful information for blasting operators provided they are able to utilise this knowledge. Geologists are ideally suited to provide this description more effectively if they are familiar with the blasting process and the rock mass properties that influence blasting hazards and blasting results. It is also important to have clear statements of blasting objectives and associated operational targets, and this will maximise the likelihood of achieving the desired outcomes. The main aim of the paper is to highlight that geology is currently not fully utilised in the blasting process. In this regard, geologists are often not entirely aware of the blasting process and how they can contribute. The two significant relationships discussed above are integral parts of this process, and thus they are discussed as separate issues in the main body of this investigation.

Online cyanide analysers have been successfully used to control free cyanide in the gold/silver leach process for over 15 years. Use of such analysers leads to cyanide savings and improvement in recoveries. Plants with leach cyanide analysers show both lower and more consistent cyanide levels in tailings. Cyanide code compliance requires meeting residual cyanide targets in tailings. Monitoring and logging of the residual cyanide in plant tailings and effluent is required. Meeting targets may require cyanide recovery/destruction processes to be implemented. The operating cost of destroying cyanide is often the same order of magnitude as the cyanidation cost. Various cyanide destruction and/or recovery processes are reviewed. Choice of a process consistent with the environmental and operational requirements is illustrated. Online weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) analysers have recently been developed and introduced on gold plants. The application of a WAD 1000 online CNWAD analyser at a large gold plant is presented. The analyser ensures code compliance, reduces cyanide destruction process operating costs and forms a historical record of CNWAD values in tailings.

On the territory Sakha (Yakutia) are located largest in Russian Federation reserves of antimony ores, Sarylakhsk and Sentochansk deposits, amaunt 10% of world stocks of antimony. A processing gold antimony ores Sarylakhsk deposit is carried out on gravitation-flotation circuit to receive gold gravitation concentrate and gold-antimony flotation concentrate with the contents of antimony over 60%. The gold-bearing concentrate is treated on place hydrometallurgicaly to a high-standard product, accepted by gold bank cash department. At the ore dressing plant reached the highest recovery in world in a concentrate of antimony 90%~91.6%, and gold 85.7%~86.0% as a result of scientific research works. Studied the mechanism of interaction cations of metals Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Ag+ with a surface antimonite presented on the basis of modern physical-chemical methods: nuclear quadrupol resonance, x-ray electron spectroscopy, electron spin resonance. The industrial tests of sodium dimethyldithiocarbate were carried out which confirmed high recovery of Sb and As. The leaching Sb2S3 by bacteria Desulfovibro desulfuricans and transformation antimonite in antimony trioxide by Tiobacillus Ferrooxidans improved following cyanidation . The extraction of antimony in a solution 96.0%~98.0% under optimal conditions. The common total extraction in the appropriate commodity products for gold reached 98%, for Sb 96.5%. At a combination of bioprocessing and cyanidation 85.5% of extraction Au was achieved. The new solvents for antimonite were found. Now by the Close Joint-Stock Co ?Sarylach-Antimony? industrial plant is constructed for processing Au-Sb concentrates to receive antimony trioxide and gold from various antimony deposits of Sakha (Yakutia).

The cost of equipment maintenance is the largest single expense at many mines and processing plants. It is not unusual for a maintenance and repair budget to be larger than 50% of the punt's total budget. Generally, in the mining industry, 400-60% of the work force in a plant reports to the maintenance department. Studies have shown that many plant maintenance workers are only 33 to 40% productive, working 2.6 to 3.7 hours of every 8-hour day. In recent years, many companies have begun to recognize that- productivity improvements and cost reductions can he achieved by upgrading maintenance methods. This paper discusses ten common causes of low maintenance productivity and how recent advancements in computing technology can be utilized to address these causes for low productivity.

STATISTICAL' STUDY OF STUDENTS IN MINING The first paper, a statistical study of the students enrolled in courses leading to a mining degree in 40 institutions, was presented by H. D. Keiser,, assistant editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal; who gave a brief outline of an article he was about to publish in ?that journal?. The complete article appears in the issue for March 30; 1929: To avoid repetition the results are summarized as follows: A request was sent to 42 institutions which give courses in mining' for the number of students enrolled as freshmen; sophomores; juniors, seniors and special students in mining for the years 1925-26, 1926-27, 1927-28, 1928-29. Two of these colleges replied that there were no students in mining. Students' enrolled in courses in metallurgy, geology and engineering, other than mining, were excluded from the statistics:. A method is outlined for computing the contribution of a micropile group to global stability of a sliding mass. The forces in the micropile are computed in a way which accounts for the effect of soil mass movement on the mobilization of axial and shear forces and which maintains compatibility between shear and axial force as a function of displacement. The method provides a rigorous model to incorporate the pile forces into the stability calculations, including the effect of pile forces on the resultant shear and normal forces at the sliding surface. This paper demonstrates the proposed solution using a simple example slope.

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. The New South Ferry Terminal in the New York City Transit system represents an important milestone for the city. This is the first station designed and built in the 21st century. The design of the fire safety system included relying on Computational Fluid Dynamics to analyze the dispersion of heat and smoke, and modelling of people egress to determine the egress requirements. The project also looked into how to protect the structure from the heat exposure in order to meet the fire rating requirements. This paper provides an overview of the fire safety design approach taken to design the new South Ferry Terminal station in lower Manhattan and looks into fire modelling, structural fire protection, and station evacuation.

"Flotation is a complex process with many factors that influence the performance of a cell. This paper examines the impact of several key variables on the performance of flotation cells. The study makes use of a simulator for the froth phase of the flotation vessel, as the main purpose of this study is to separate the impact of different variables from one another.In experiments it is very difficult to separate the effect of variables from one another as a change in a singe input parameter, such as air rate, invariably also affects many of the other key variables, such as bubble size and bubble bursting rates. This interaction between variables makes it very hard to experimentally separate the impact of, for instance, the air rate from that of bubble size or bursting rate. In the simulator, though, it easy to make independent changes to these variables.In order to achieve this a base case simulation that is typical of many of the rougher cells found in sulphide flotation circuits was carried out. Four key variables, air rate, incoming bubble size, surface bubble size and the fraction of the bubbles flowing out of the cell unburst, were varied in order to obtain the system’s response.The most significant results were obtained when the bubble size was varied. An increase in the incoming bubble size has the effect of reducing the pulp zone recovery, but increases the froth zone recovery. If it were possible to vary the incoming bubble size without influencing the overflowing bubble size, the impact of the change would be unclear because of these two competing effects. The effect of a change in the overflowing bubble size has an opposite effect on the froth recovery, with larger bubbles resulting in lower froth recoveries."

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

"This paper was prepared for presentation at the 16th Canadian Mineral Processor's Annual Meeting, Ottawa, Ontario, Jan. 17 to Jan. 19, 1984.This paper gives an account of the development of treatment procedures for the differential flotation of refractory copper-zinc ores. Special references are made to the effectiveness of various zinc depressants and their combinations.Studies carried out on refractory copper-zinc ores demonstrated that conventional zinc depressants such as cyanide and zinc sulphate were not particularly effective when secondary copper minerals were present in the ore; the flotation activity of sphalerite was enhanced in the presence of cyanide.Among the various zinc depressants evaluated, the following depressant combinations were found most effective: Zn(OH) 2-S02 , 802-CaO, Na2S-Na2S03-S02, Na 2 S-S02 and Na 2S-S0rDS22.The practical application of any of these systems depends on the type of ore treated and other conditions such as pH, levels and points of collector and depressant additions.In this paper the effect of each depressant combination on different ores is described with reference to the selection of collectors."

The paper describes the salient construction features of the Pile foundation work for the Railway viaducts in Algeria. Six viaducts were constructed for execution of the Railway line between Aintemouchent and Benisaf in Algeria. The work was executed by the Indian Railway Construction Company Limited of India (IRCON) for the Algerian National Railways (S.N.T.F.). These six viaducts had multiple spans of 36M resting on hollow piers of heights upto 69M. Most of the piers were founded on piles of 1 and 1.2M dia bored piles going upto 22M deep through cal­careous rocks and were designed for Railway loading in seismically active area. The work involved 356 piles & constituted a very important aspect of the whole work. The concrete in the piles was made with sulphate resistant cement and the integrity of the concrete was tested with Sonic method so as to ensure the quality. The piles were driven with the help of a hydraulic oscillator and the concrete was laid with a tremie pipe. Problems as encountered during execution have been explained.

The exploitation of stone (trachyte) at the ?Srebro? open pit mine, located on the northern slopes of the Fru?ka Gora National Park (Serbia) central area begun in 1964. Stone exploitation in this locality does not endanger the environment in an ecological sense, does not pose a threat to plants and animals, and apart from the terrain configuration changes, it did not leave behind permanent consequences to the environment. Projects for permanent cessation of mining operations and for land reclamation and spatial arrangement were completed in these circumstances. The paper gives a short review of the condition at the open pit mine; furthermore, the key problems and basic demands are presented, together with a concept of technical and biological land reclamation and the spatial arrangement of the mining complex. Introduction The world has been suffering from an excessive production of all kinds of raw materials, and the metals and petroleum are no exception. As a consequence, at the moment, the urge to find new mineral deposits is almost non-existent and prospecting languishes. But from previous experience we know that sooner or later new supplies will be needed. Mineral deposits become exhausted, and to keep up the supplies of our metals and petroleum, new deposits must be found. Even now, a supply of petroleum of domestic production would not be unwelcome in Canada. It is not, therefore, so entirely malapropos to discuss means of finding ores and oil as it would seem. Almost any physical property connected in definite manner with minerals and rocks may be made the basis of geophysical exploration. This is particularly true of electrical resistivity, and its utilization in electrical prospecting has been the deciding factor in the discovery of such big ore-bodies as Buchans mine, Newfoundland, and the large copper ore-bodies in northern Sweden, etc., as well as in the solution of many foundation and structural problems. The importance of electrical prospecting has been growing steadily, and already there exists hardly any exploration project involving geological problems which may not profit by its application. Electrical prospecting is marching on, and neither temporary failures, nor incompetence, nor over-optimism, nor ill-will and pessimism, nor bad times and business depression, will be able to halt its progress.

"The Kemess mining and milling complex is operated by Northgate Minerals Corporation and is located in the mountains of north-central British Columbia, 430 kilometers northwest of Prince George. The complex consists of the Kemess South open pit mine and a 52,000 tonnes per day mill. Hypogene, supergene and leach cap ores are processed using conventional crushing, grinding, and flotation techniques to produce gold-copper concentrates with minor by-product silver value.The rougher flotation concentrate is re-ground in closed circuit before being cleaned to final concentrate grade. Historically, gold losses in the cleaner tailings were primarily associated with pyrite, with only minor amounts of free gold. More recently, with the processing of high pyrite ores, the major losses were found to be free gold less than 10 microns in size. The fine grind required for the high pyrite ores resulted in over-grinding of the free gold particles in the regrind circuit, contributing to poor flotation characteristics. It was thought that if this free gold could be recovered by gravity at coarser size in the regrind circulating load, the free gold losses in the cleaner tailings could be reduced.Preliminary test work carried out by Knelson Gravity Solutions indicated the potential for free gold recovery in the regrind circuit. A Knelson XD-30 Concentrator was installed with variable speed capability, and a series of optimization tests were carried out. In addition, cleaner tailings were characterized with gravity operating and with gravity not operating to determine the overall gold recovery benefit. The single Knelson XD-30 installation recovers ~10% of the total gold in the regrind circuit and increases overall recovery by 3% when high pyrite ores are processed."

"The pursuit of concentrator surveying for purposes of metal accounting or process optimization has not yet connected with the well-published realm of geostatistics. The reality of lognormality in time has seldom been discussed. One publication by Krige, 1962, examined such effects for a gold concentrator in South Africa, towards an information system that would provide feedback to the mining and surveying teams on grade control of ore mined.During present studies which are designing and testing a new survey model, called statistical benchmark surveying, it was found that the distributions of feed, concentrate and tailings bear significant residual signs of the parent lognormality in space. The multiple hosting of paymetals in different mineral species complicates the understanding of these distributions. These features have to be recognized and treated in order to perform appropriate quality control on the diagnostic sampling performed in the pursuit of statistical benchmark surveying.It is shown in this paper that the above two features can actually be used to advantage in the diagnosis of continuous periods of operations data ahead of such surveying, including the estimation of recoverable paymetals in flotation tailings from a graphical method.INTRODUCTIONAssessment of Concentrator PerformanceMilling and flotation, sometimes accompanied by gravity separation, are well-established unit processes, which have traditionally been used to treat ore that has been mined. This is because these processes liberate, then separate, the valuable minerals, which contain paymetals, from host gangue. This is often done by a combination of crushing and grinding processes, or autogenous grinding, to liberate the paymetal minerals, followed by gravity separation and/or flotation, to separate these valuable minerals into a concentrate, or several concentrates. These concentrate(s) have a lower bulk than the parent ore from which they are derived. Further, they contain a high percentage of the valuable minerals. Accordingly, they are more economically treated in subsequent beneficiation processes than the ore from which they were produced."

"Gold cyanidation kinetics which are often limited in commercial operations by the rate of oxygen dissolution from gas bubbles into the slurry, are discussed. Emerging technologies for improving the rate of oxygen dissolution are compared and the gas efficiency, energy use and operating performance of inverted cones and a device based on a jet diffuser are examined. The effect of solids loading is also reviewed and a relationship between operating parameters and the kilograms oxygen dissolved per kilowatt-hour is presented.Inverted cones are shown to create slurry settling problems at high gas flow rates and surface tension lowering agents are shown not to greatly improve the overall rates of oxygen dissolution.The novel jet diffuser technology operates at a range of gas to liquid ratios that improves its energy use over conventional technology and the performance of a number of designs are discussed.Gas efficiencies as high as 35% were observed with the novel diffusers at 40 cm diffuser immersion and are expected to increase at greater immersions. Energy use of 1.8 kg 02 I kWh were estimated for prototype full size diffusers operating at 100 cm immersion. Energy use of 3.S kg 02 /kWh is conservatively expected at 600 cm immersion.IntroductionGold ExtractionGold that can not be recovered by gravity separation can be recovered by either the Merrill-Crow process or the newer carbon in pulp (CIP) or carbon in leach (CIL) processes 1. This paper introduces a number of emerging technologies and provides a basis for comparison of the performance. The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selectivity was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of a large amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence, selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords: sulphide ores, flotation, flotation depressant, mineralogy.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research at a Pittsburgh Coalbed longwall mine to evaluate and optimize bleeder ventilation and gob gas venthole longwall methane control systems. Gas flow into these two methane control systems was investigated using a combination of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6)tracer gas studies and gob venthole pressure monitoring experiments. The insights gained from this research has facilitated the development of a longwall subsided strata methane control system conceptual model. This model provides the basis for design suggestions to increase the efficiency of the gob gas venthole system to permit the bleeder ventilation system to become a "safety net" for methane control.
