Abstract-Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has inves¬tigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (<_1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars he provided only in mines >_1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines <_1.22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

Effective strata control is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient mining operation. If the strata in the vicinity of an opening are not controlled effectively, it is impossible to perform a safe, efficient and economical operation. In this paper, the reasons and outcome of instability problems observed in roadways opened in clay and marl at the Bolu Colliery of Yeni Çeltek Establishment are investigated. Roadways under examination were located in a syncline causing high residual tectonic stresses. Factors affecting the instability have been studied thoroughly by examining geology and tectonics of the area, establishing convergence measuring stations to understand in situ behaviour of supports and laboratory tests to determine engineering properties of samples taken from nearby convergence measurement stations. As a conclusion, a new production strategy and a new support system are recommended to maintain stability.

With the continued deep drilling of today, increasing numbers of high pressure and high temperature gas-condensate reservoirs are being discovered. Correspondingly, the ranges of properties of gas-condensate reservoir fluids are also being increased. The literature1*&apos;." contains several excellent reviews of the property ranges in presently known condensate reservoirs. When one examines these property ranges, it becomes apparent that the need for reliable data is great if the engineer is to evaluate properly or appraise a gas-condensate reservoir. It is the purpose of this paper to present phase-behavior data that will point out some of the important variables that influence recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs produced by pressure depletion. All these variables may be resolved into two major categories: the hydroc:arbon composition of the reservoir fluid and the physical properties of the reservoir. But the variables which we will consider are those which are usually determined from well tests shortly after discovery and are, consequently, readily available to the engineer. They are as follows: (1) the producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio, (2) stock-tank liquid gravity, and (3) reservoir temperature. Laboratory depletion studies have been performed on several reservoir fluids to illustrate the effect of changes in the cronsidered variables upon ultimate recoveries. The deviation factors, Z, of a series of reservoir fluids were determined experimentally to illustrate their order of magnitude and their effect upon the calculation of in-place reserves existing at high pressurcs and temperatures. The procedures followed in conjunction with the performance of these studies and their associated calculations are illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of this paper, the depletion recoveries are expressed only in terms of pcr cent of initial stock-tank liquid, with the abandonment pressure assumed to be 500 psig. VARIATION OF RECOVERY WITH INITIAL PRODUCING SEPARATOR GAS-STOCK-TANK LIQUID RATIO The producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio has long been one of the principal criteria in assumptions and generalized correlations&apos; used for the estimation of ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs. Fig. 2 presents a plot of the cumulative recovery of stock-tank liquid at abandonment as a function of the initial producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio. The graphical illustration represents the results of 44 laboratory depletion studies performed on actual gas-condensate fluids. These data are presented not only to illustrate the general trend of ultimate recovery increase with initial producing ratio increase but to emphasize the considerable variation in possible recovery at any given producing ratio. Table 1 presents the properties of two actual reservoir fluids chosen to illustrate the approximate extremities of producing ratios for gas-condensate systems. The fluids designated as A and B exhibited initial producing ratios of 3,400 and 114,000 scf/bbl, respectively. Fig. 3 presents a graphical comparison of the cumulative stock-tank liquid recoveries, calculated from the well-stream compositions and produced volumes for each fluid during depletion. It is to be noted that Fluid A exhibited a recovery of only 16.5 per cent when produced to an assumed abandonment pressure of 500 psig while the corresponding recovery for Fluid B was calculated to be 62.2 per cent. Selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during desliming and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at very low concentrations of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration of calcium, ions to achieve the same effect. This difference may be attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to their larger size, can only adsorb to every other hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every other surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

A mining engineer from South Africa, whose research has taken him to some of the world?s deepest gold mines, is the winner of the St Andrews Prize. Daniel Limpitlaw, 27, picked up a cheque for $25,000 for his dissertation on reversing the damage done by early mining technology, which he claims is partly responsible for blighting the urban environment in many South African cities. Launched in October 1998 by the University of St Andrews and international energy company Conoco, the St Andrews Prize sought practical solutions to environmental problems. It attracted interest from 450 individuals and groups from countries as diverse as China, Pakistan, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, the UK and the United States.

At a regional scale, the Otago Schist has been divided into textural zones, metamorphic zones, structural transposition zones, and terranes and lithologic associations. Each of these subdivisions reveals aspects of the internal structure of the lithologically monotonous Otago Schist but, to date, a map of the schist derived directly from structural data has not been made. In the present study, digitised structural data from the QMAP GIS were used to make a form line map of Schist foliation which, in turn (and using certain non-unique guiding assumptions), was used to construct a provisional foliation thickness map of the Otago Schist. Contours of dominant foliation (Sp) thickness have been drawn from 4 kIn above to 16 km below the reference level of the Caples-Torlesse terrane boundary in the schist structural pile. A recent revision of the Otago Schist textural zone classification has shown that the grain size of metamorphic white micas increases progressively with textural grade. There also appears to be a correlation between schist mica grain size and foliation thickness. Using mica grain size, it may eventually be feasible to establish the vertical structural position of samples in greenschist facies parts of the schist pile to a precision of ¦ 1 km or better, even if they are in inliers or fault-bounded blocks. Foliation thickness and mica grain size are thus potentially useful tools for research and exploration in the Otago Schist in that they assist with structural interpolation and extrapolation. Even at this early stage of application they can be used to provide hitherto unobtainable, semi-quantitative estimates of displacement on Mesozoic and Cenozoic faults and folds. &nbsp;

The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .

Underground mining has yet to see an industry wide solution for control of their ventilation systems due to the complexity and sensitivity of the underground environment. Complexity arises from multi-level, multi-zone operations and sensitivity is associated with the impact that changes in equipment status and output have on air flows and quality throughout the mine. Our approach to solving this challenge incorporates system modeling and industrial control systems in a unified architecture. Although this approach can be applied to other processes and industries, this paper will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of an integrated model-control system (MCS) as it applies to underground mining ventilation.

As the number of prime surface coal mining sites diminishes with time and with the potential for increased coal demand, areas that were previously not mined because of their difficult mining conditions, marginal economics, and controversial environmental nature, will have to be considered if surface coal mining is to continue in the future. Such sites include areas near major rivers, streams, and lakes. The name most commonly given to these areas by regulatory agencies is "wetlands". The exact definition(s) to the term "wetland" will be discussed later in this paper. Most coal operators are now more than familiar with permitting requirements under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). The SMCRA permanent regulatory program recognizes the fact that coal mining operations will periodically encounter streams, wetlands, etc. Although discussed in various sections of the permanent program regulations, the relationship of coal mining operations to wetlands is particularly evident in the performance standards regarding hydrologic balance and protection of fish, wildlife and related environmental values.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 &#181;m) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce&#174; mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir&#174;) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (&lt;4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life. "Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited is located at Joutel in North-Western Québec. The mine is about four miles north-west from the town on the left bank of the Harricana River. The present mining is 1,800 feet deep with an extensive geological development below this level.HISTORY The development of the ore body started sometimes in 1967 and then the operation ceased in 1969 and again reopened in 1973 due to higher prices of gold. During these periods of active development, a considerable metallurgical research has been done by different laboratories and research and design companies.The original capacities of the Mill differed as much as 30%. So did the concept of the ore treatment. The original design of the mill was for 200 TPD of ore with straight cyanidation. The problems with low gold extraction, high reagent consumption and poor filtration resulted in a decrease of the expected mill output to an initial 550 TPD with gold recoveries in the order of 40 to 60%.Although the studies and research work done on the ore varied, all of them had a common conclusion: a very fine grind is needed to expose gold. The mining method (sub-level blast hole mining) now provides the ore that differs from that on which the metallurgical test work was conducted and the original capacity calculations had been done.These variations in the concept consequently led to the conclusion that the size of gold is a determining factor for the process.Kilborn Engineering provided the original design with the Leslie Eng¬ineering completing the design. The metallurgical test work has been done by the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources, Lakefield Research of Canada, Kilborn Engineering and Sidam Incorporated.The new flotation section with secondary grinding has been designed and put into operation by the company in December 1975 with the results yet to be evaluated."

"A general computer program has been written to calculate material balances using multiple regression techniques. The program can handle metal assays or size distribution data obtained in multiple surveys of the flotation circuit. The ""best fit"" weight split is calculated between the input and product streams by minimizing the sum of squares of the residual errors using all of the available data. The program includes an assay adjustment feature in which each assay is recalculated to fit the ""best fit"" mass balance. Thus assay or sampling errors can be easily identified. Also the assays can be statistically weighted so the most precise measurements are given the most influence on the material balance. The computer output reports the mass balance, the actual and corrected assays, the percent metal recoveries and the significance and confidence levels for the weight splits.The program enables a rapid and accurate evaluation of mass balances from large masses of data obtained in multiple surveys around a flotation circuit. The effects of changing process variables can be quickly evaluated with statistical confidence."

INTRODUCTION THE Argosy Gold Mines, Limited, which joined the ranks of active Ontario gold producers during the summer of 1936, holds a group of 21 claims on Casummit lake, in the Patricia portion, district of Kenora, northwestern Ontario. The Company is developing and mining goldbearing quartz veins that occur in a series of greywackes and slates of probable Keewatin age. The writer made a geological examination of the property and the surrounding area for the Ontario Department of Mines during the early part of the field season of 1936. This paper is a report on the general geology, structure, and ore deposits at the mine and is based almost entirely on data compiled during the examination. HISTORY Mineralization was first discovered on the property in May, 1929, by A. F. Hewitt, who, with J. A. Borthwick, decided that the country had prospecting possibilities and commenced work in April. Mr. Hewitt staked, and with his partner, J. Ziyone, still holds the group of claims lying immediately east of the present Argosy holdings. Mr. Borthwick staked six claims, K.R.L. 9,681 to 9,686, inclusive, adjoining Hewitt&apos;s on the west and later added claims K.R.L. 9,733 to 9,740, inclusive, to his holdings. F. Fiskness, who was also prospecting in the region, discoveted No. 1 vein on Borthwick&apos;s claims, and with his two partners, L. Parth and H. Jones, staked claims K.R.L. 9,758 to 9,763, inclusive, to the northwest of Borthwick&apos;s and Hewitt&apos;s ground. In July, 1929, the Casey Mountain Operating Syndicate, which held ground to the northwest, secured an option on Borthwick&apos;s claims. The Fiskness-Parth-Jones property was added in January, 1930, to protect the west dip of the veins. During the winter of 1930-31, the veins were explored by diamond drilling, No. 2 for a length ?of 900 feet and a vertical depth of from 51 to. 375 feet? and No. 3 .t~ a slope depth of 175 feet. I~ August, 1.931, after the msrallat10n of a miming plant, the Casey Summit Gold Mmes, limited, was incorporated to take over the property from the Syndicate. The Maple leaf Mines optioned a controlling interest in the stock in August, 1933, and on September 17th, 1934, brought a 50-ton amalgamation mill into production. From early in October to December 27th, 1934, when the mill was closed down, 4,094 tons of ore were treated to yield 887.89 ounces of gold and 87 .26 ounces of silver( ! ).

The present article sets forward the results of field tests that made it possible to validate the mathematical model used in the VENTGRAPH ventilation engineer programmes. The case considered relates to the introduction of a new heading to the ventilation network of the mine. The utilisation of computer programmes in practice is justified by the necessity of ensuring expected performance and secure conditions in the network of mine headings, where - for example - plans are being made to utilise the transport dip-heading, taking into consideration fire and methane hazards. In the article we have presented the methodology of preparation of a database for computer programmes of the VENTGRAPH system, obtained on the basis of ventilation measurements. The next step consists in the execution of a design of the modified network and prediction, this on the basis of heading geometries, of parameters characterising the flow of air for the designed headings. Due to the fact that the heading was in the final stage of driving, following its introduction to normal operation and the stabilisation of flow values it was possible to retake ventilation measurements, which validated the results obtained through computer simulations. In order to execute measurements of the volume flow in the dip-heading, we employed a new wireless multipoint measurement system to determine the velocity field of air in the mine heading; the results are characterised by a high accuracy of measurement. As a part of fire prevention and incident management planning, a series of underground fire case studies for the a validated network flow model has been made. Results of simulations show the capabilities of the FIRE module of the mentioned software, including assessment of stability of flow directions and hints on counter and preventive measures for particular locations of fire.

During a mine fire or other emergency, it may be desirable to reverse the airflow in order to provide an escapeway or to isolate a fire. Also, in colder areas, the airflow may be reversed to prevent ice buildup. When reversing main mine fans, the mine operator usually does not know what operating characteristics of flow and pressure to expect. Laboratory and field tests of vane axial main mine fans in the 7- to 9-ft diameter size range were conducted to establish forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions and at typical mine installations. The data obtained suggest that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. There is also evidence that reverse performance can be predicted for a family of blade angles and a given hub to tip ratio. Generally, quantity of air is 30 to 65% less in reverse than when operating in the normal forward mode.

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL.
