To further emphasis the bullish view they point to the emergence of India for follow through demand. The bears remain convinced China?s growth is unsustainable and with higher interest rates and high oil prices, the United States economy is poised to slow. Both groups can make a convincing argument and both will be proven right in the fullness of time. Profitability and balance sheet strength for the mining industry has rarely been better. Is this a time to be bold or cautious? In this paper, the author will address the dilemma facing today?s management as they pursue growth and try to minimize risk.

The paper presents problems resulting from the mobile mining machines functioning and requirements concerning a machine control system, which controls successive operation stages of such machines. The problem is presenting on the example of a mobile hydraulic support to remove residual pillars in copper ore mines. The paper describes an algorithm and a flow chart to be followed when designing a supports control system. Design of control systems to ensure machine function under given circumstances is also presented.

Integrating a research and development department into an engineering company's corporate structure can be rewarding to the engineering division, the R&D group, and, most of all, the company's clients. Actually, the R&D department is a logical extension of the conventional processing group within an engineering organization-but the R&D group provides services as needed to the engineering department while it is carrying out regular testing, pilot plant, and preliminary feasibility studies. Backup Services Provided With an R&D group, the engineering division does not need a process engineering group as such. The R&D group provides project backup services for feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed engineering, construction, and startup. The R&D group, in turn, benefits from its close association with project engineers, draftsmen, estimators, and computer capabilities in the engineering division. The client also benefits from the arrangement because R&D and engineering skills are available to both departments on an as-needed basis without standby eost. To handle the integrated responsibility of R&D projects, as well as conceptual design and preliminary feasibility studies, the R&D staff must be carefully selected. These research engineers should: • have a good background in plant practice as a mill superintendent or chief metallurgist; • be capable of organizing and supervising a testing program or a pilot plant campaign; •be innovative and willing to accept new ideas and concepts; • be able to translate lab test results into a workable flowsheet through sound conceptual design and feasibility studies; and •be able to communicate with clients. In short, the R&D engineer must be a jack of all process-engineering trades to successfully take a project from concept to operating reality. Keywords: Pyrochemistry, Salts Treatment, Distillation The pyrochemical purification of metal generates spent salts. When this metal is an actinide such as plutonium, the slags cannot be discarded and are thus disposed in nuclear facility. In order to handle with these slags, the decision has been taken to reduce stored quantities. The development of a pyrochemical treatment is in progress in the CEA Valduc centre. The feed salt, typically composed of various Pu and Am species contained into monovalent or divalent chloride matrix, is first oxidized to convert the actinides into oxides. Then the chlorides are separated from the actinide oxides by vacuum distillation. Temperatures higher than 750°C for monochloride salts mixture NaCl/KCl and higher than 1100°C for divalent CaCl2 base salts, are required to produce an industrial flow of vaporization. Inactive qualification of the process for NaCl/KCl base salt has been carried out with lanthanide surrogates. Then, a pilot equipment, called distillator has been designed and built for production-scale distillation of NaCl/KCl and CaCl2 oxidized plutonium salts. Industrial flows of vaporization have been obtained with this pilot equipment : about 4 g/cm²/h for NaCl/KCl at 800?900°C and 1 Pa, and more than 1,5 g/cm²/h for CaCl2 base salts between 1000?1200°C at 0.1 Pa. The last step, now in progress, is the integration of the distillator into a glove box.

As a minerals company, obtaining the appropriate consents under the Resource Management Act 1991 and getting permits granted for exploring, prospecting and mining under the Crown Minerals Act 1991, is necessary for actively exploring and mining in New Zealand. But the essential mix of ingredients for a viable and healthy Industry go way beyond this.   In the short term, an individual company seeking to operate on or within the Crown minerals estate of New Zealand must chart a course through the requirements raised by new cornerstone legislation, the Resource Management Act, the Crown Minerals Act and, the Conservation Act 1978 (where the minerals sought coincide with this estate).   However, this paper suggests that in the longer term for individual operators within the Industry and for the Industry at large to remain viable and sustainable and for New Zealanders to continue to enjoy its benefits, much more is required. Not least of which is a better balancing of competing uses and attitudes, which will require an opening of minds, a change in mindset, topped off with those two most essential of ingredients advocacy and leadership.   New Zealand has undergone massive restructuring in the last 15 years. Is it complete? Have each of its fronts evolved to the end point which was envisaged by the designers of the regime? What are the advantages? What is left to be done? What are the impediments from an incomplete transition which are left to either dog the Industry or remain as a challenge to be removed to ensure the Industry's smooth sailing into a prosperous and environmentally clean and friendly future? A future wherein an educated and understanding public welcome and are proud of the Minerals Industry to whom they owe the standard of living which they enjoy.   This presentation will examine the role of the New Zealand Minerals Industry Association (NZMIA) in paving the way for an optimum operating environment in which to couch a healthy industry into the future.

The history of the first twenty years of the high explosives industry in the United States begins as an illustration of the free enterprise system at its best and ends with the industry virtually taken over by a single company: a company which strongly opposed the new explosive material at the beginning of the period. In the world of the late Twentieth Century we could almost compare this history to the opposition of the mainframe computer manufacturers to the introduction of the personal computer, and their later entry into, and attempted dominance of, that market. At Namdeb, submerged beaches are earmarked for sampling and future mining and various sampling configurations are tested for optimality through the use of spatial simulations. For the creation of these virtual orebodies, basic statistics and variograms are needed, but in this specific instance no data exists from which the necessary parameters can be determined. The best that can be done is to use proxy data from onshore beaches, with adaptations where needed. The reworking of raised beaches during periods of rising and falling sea levels in some cases destroyed the internal beach structures, and it is very difficult to determine the variograms. A method is proposed whereby simulated annealing is used to adjust the sample locations to align the data pertaining to beach crests or cliff lines, thus improving the variogram structure along the shoreline in the direction of the highest geological continuity.

Radioisotopes of selenium (se78) and tellurium (Te123) were successfully employed by the Bureau of Mines as tracers in metallurgical research directed to developing improved methods for volatilizing these elements from low-tenor raw materials. Prior research, guided and controlled by conventional analytical methods, was seriously hampered by inconsistent selenium and tellurium analyses, by the slowness of the conventional chemical methods, and by the poor accountability of these volatile elements in test products. Methods were devised and evaluated for admixing the radioactive tracer with typical raw materials and then following the deportment of the selenium and tellurium by radiometric methods with occasional chemical analysis checks. These techniques were found unusually effective in (1) quantifying the completeness and the rate of volatilization of selenium and tellurium while heating the raw materials at different rates to different temperatures and (2) accurately tracing and quantifying the distribution of minute amounts of these volatile elements in the several products made by high-temperature treatment and in the several units comprising the experimental equipment.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce risks of coal dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this NIOSH study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust (<75 µm diameter) in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity. Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing, and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle is operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings can be used to select sprays and design spray arrays to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. INTRODUCTION Coal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 microns in diameter, are deposited in return entries of coal mines and can be re-entrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; NIOSH, 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (CFR, 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal dust-fueled explosions. Water sprays are both effective and widely accepted as a method for controlling underground coal mine dust. In fact, water sprays are considered to be the most economical and technically feasible means of reducing dust concentrations in underground coal mines (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Barker and Humphreys, 1996). Sprays are used in several ways to control dust in mining processes: inhibiting dust formation, immobilizing dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, and capturing airborne dust (Cheng, 1973). Reductions in airborne dust concentrations have frequently been attributed to inertial impaction between water droplets and dust particles, forming larger agglomerates which then quickly precipitate out of the airstream (McPherson, 1993). Inertial impaction activity is generally accepted as the major capture mechanism for airborne particles larger than 0.5 µm in diameter. It is this mechanism that is evaluated in this study."

Komatsu America has introduced its 2-MW (2,700-hp), 930E-3 ac electric drive truck with a 290-t(320-st) capacity. The truck is designed to provide increased productivity, lower cost per ton hauled and improved speed and control. The 930E-3 is powered by a Komatsu SSDA16Vl6016-cylinder engine. It is capable of speeds up to 65 km/h(40 mph) and is a 15-percent to 20-percent more productive unit than 218-t (240-st) trucks, at a lower operating cost per ton. The 930E-3 also provides enough torque and speed to get up and off ramps easier than mechanically driven trucks. And it can climb at altitudes up to 3,650 m(12,000 ft) without any fuel deration.

In an investigation of the incineration of combustible wastes, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of dimensional parameters, process variables, and fuel properties on the operation of an incinerator that consisted of a single cylindrical combustion chamber in which all combustion air was supplied tangentially above the fuel. Construction and operation of three designs of such a device proved that the tangential overfire air design is effective in providing efficient combustion and low concentration of particulate matter in the effluent gas. A correlation was found that related burning rate with air rate, chamber diameter, and inlet port diameter. In one of the incinerator models, ignition was by radiation from a preheated surface. The temperature of this surface was required to be 1,400° to 1,600° F to insure ignition of moist refuse; however, this had little effect on combustion rates. In the combustion of moist refuse, evaporation of the water proceeded through the fuel bed as a wave, with an ignition wave following the evaporation.

There is a significant amount of historical mining and exploration information available. This information is often distributed throughout a number of reports or plans, available from a variety of sources, and in many differing formats. The ability to capture paper-based historical information in a modem digital format provides mining and exploration companies with valuable information that can be used in a number of ways; for example, reassessments of exploration or mining work previously undertaken, or used in conjunction with current exploration information. &nbsp; The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, to present the paper-based historical information; highlighting some of the problems encountered, solutions to those problems, and any assumptions used. Secondly, to present the historical data in digital format, and demonstrate the tools available to analyse geological and associated information, and finally, to illustrate some of the potential future applications of the information, including mining optimisation, mine design and scheduling. &nbsp; The Glenorchy scheelite/gold prospect has been used as an example. Within the overall prospect two smaller areas were selected. The Mount McIntosh and surrounding areas, focuses on exploration and surface excavation information. The Mount Judah area (State and Kelly-Taylor workings) focuses on underground mining and exploration information. &nbsp;

Main gate roof control during longwall retreat is subject to a significant increase in horizontal stress and risk. The implementation and management of an appropriate roof support design is as a result, an imperative requirement for any longwall mine and must in addition to the likely consequences of a roof fall, also consider the variables of the geotechnical environment, associated support costs and practicalities. This paper will therefore summarise a number of recent advances in main gate roof control in the Australian coal industry. Points considered include; (i) the ?Longwall Acceleration? concept, (ii) macro-scale horizontal stress notching, (iii) micro-scale horizontal stress notching, (iv) bedded versus laminated roof types and (v) the type of cable reinforcement used.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

Geophysical explosive charges are used in mineral resource exploration. They are detonated subsurface and radiate sonic waves into ground monitors, which detect the vibration waves and their interaction with underlying geologic strata. Geophysicists perform computer analyses of the waves reflected from the strata to determine their depth and thickness (Strobel, Berger & Schaefer, 2012). The purpose of this research is to determine how the detonating explosive charge interacts with the adjacent ground and how the induced waves propagate through the surrounding medium. Furthermore, it is necessary to optimize the location of the initiation point within the charge. Establishing both the direction and intensity of the waves will allow geoscientists to refine and optimize geophysical studies that employ explosive charges.

Since 1995, when "freeze lining" refractory systems were introduced to the ferroalloy industry, they have gained in popularity, due to the freeze lining?s reputation for reliability, safety, and the contribution it makes to profitability. As with many popular and effective technologies, however, the freeze lining has spawned low-cost pretenders that claim the "freeze lining" name. On the surface they appear to contain some of the components of the technology, such as thermally conductive materials, but they fail to incorporate all of the principles that define a true Freeze Lining. The term "freeze lining" refers to the refractory system?s ability to maintain a temperature profile that is low enough to freeze a layer of process material on its hot face, which insulates the refractory and prevents direct contact with molten metal and slag. In doing so, the common wear mechanisms found in the submerged arc furnace - chemical attack, erosion, and thermal stress - can be prevented. These wear mechanisms are all related to high temperature; thus, they are prevented by maintaining low temperatures. Certain refractory properties and design concepts are absolutely necessary for the lining system to function as a true Freeze Lining. The paper explains these requirements and why they are important - the Truth of freeze linings - and further explains why systems that ignore one or more of these requirements cannot claim to be freeze linings, thereby exposing the Myths.

"The Vietnamese economic growth of more than 5% per year leads this country to an enormous demand for raw materials. In the duration of ongoing expansion, the big challenge in the coming decades will be to make this process as sustainable as possible when it comes to economic, environmental and social objectives. Risk management especially in occupational safety and health (OSH) in enterprises is one of the most important tools to achieve this aim. But until now, this has not been taken into priority by Vietnamese coal mining enterprises. Main reasons for this situation can be found in deficient legislative conditions and in non-synchronized risk management systems. In contrast, Germany has implemented an adequate legal system and the German mining industry has gained lots of experiences in risk management, especially in occupational safety and health. This paper seeks to point out specific challenges how to improve occupational safety and health in Vietnam by transferring and applying German methods and standards."
