Nas aciarias que operam com forno elétrico a arco (FEA) existe o interesse de garantir uma maior estabilidade ao arco elétrico para almejar uma menor distorção no sistema elétrico, consequentemente, uma redução no consumo de energia elétrica. A prática da escória espumante no refino primário do aço líquido melhora consideravelmente a eficiência da transferência de energia do arco elétrico para a carga e promove um menor consumo do refratário, entre outras vantagens. Além disso, a espumação da escória aumenta a estabilidade do arco elétrico, por reduzir o total de distorção harmônica (THD) entre as fases do FEA. No presente trabalho foram coletadas informações de composição química da escória e parâmetros elétricos de 156 corridas de um FEA, de um padrão de carga específico. Com os dados de composição química pode ser determinado o teor de FeO e basicidade da escória espumante que propiciaram uma redução do THD e no consumo de energia elétrica do FEA. Calculou-se o índice de espumação das escórias. O aumento do índice de espumação proporcionou a queda do THD. A redução do THD mostrou uma redução da energia elétrica consumida na etapa de refino do FEA.

S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. The purpose of using experimental subjective and/or perception methods is: (a) to understand human subjective impressions of the physical characteristics of vibration; (b) to determine the relationship between the subjective perception of some aspect of the vibration and an evaluation index of the physical vibration characteristics; and (c) the establishment of target values for design of vibration environments in terms of human sensation of vibration characteristics. In order to understand the relationship between a physical measure of the mechanical vibration and the subjectively perceived aspect of the vibration environment, experimental methods shown in Table 1 have been used1. [ ] The constant measurement methods of Table 1 are mainly used for measurement of the threshold of human sense. The subjective scaling methods are mainly used for obtaining subjective (or proportional) scaling between the perceived quantity and physical quantity. In this review, the fundamental approach of experimental methods for obtaining the target values used in the design of vibration environments, and the different findings between the subjectively perceived methods for evaluating human response to vibration characteristics and the physical quantity of the vibration environment are summarized. Fundamentals of Subjective Scaling The relationship between the experimental psychological methods for providing target values in the design of the vibration environments and the physical quantities is illustrated in Fig. 1. Vehicle mechanical vibration can be characterized using many metrics, and these can be considered the ‘input’ to the human. In order to predict subjective responses to the vibration, it is necessary to link the characteristics of the source of vibration and human reactions, the ‘output’.

"This paper focusses on new developments regarding thermal rock fragmentation applications. The technology consists of a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air. The thermal reaction that is created allows for the enlargement of 125 mm to 450 mm holes by breaking the rock in a spalling effect. It has been used for over 30 years in Russian open pit mining. Following an agreement between Dynamitage T.C.G. Inc. and the owner of the technology, major improvements have been brought to this technology, allowing for the fabrication of a prototype suitable for the Canadian industry. In Russia and the Ukraine, thermal rock fragmentation is actually used to drill large diameter holes in surface mining. Upon having acquired a better knowledge of this technology, it seems that it presents a great potential for selective mining in narrow-vein operations, for either surface or underground mining.Rocmec International Inc., a subsidiary of Dynamitage T.C.G. Inc., and Natural Resources Canada are technical partners in the evaluation of the operational parameters and environmental aspects such as gas, heat, dust and fog emissions. Furthermore, Canada Economic Development is a financial partner in this project.This paper presents the technology and its history. It also reports on the changes brought to the equipment to adapt it to North American environments. A summary of the tests carried out since 1995 is provided, along with the main conclusions obtained. The anticipated applications for the use of this technology in both surface and underground environments are described such as open pit mining, bulk sampling and narrow-vein ore extraction. An estimate showing a comparison between the thermal fragmentation mining concept and the long-hole mining method is presented and, finally, the future developments planned are listed."

""Combined silica,"" on the other hand, has been reserved to denote silica combined with other elements as silicates.Improvements in methods for the determination of free silica, and quartz in particular, have been the subject of considerable interest during the past decade, owing mainly to the accented and increased knowledge concerning quartz as a causative factor in silicosis. Analysis for quartz, however, is of importance in many other fields, including the determination of quartz in ceramic raw materials, such as feldspar and clay; the evaluation of a beneficiation procedure by the ore dresser, such as in the concentration of iron ore; control studies of a manufactured product, such as silica brick; and routine analysis of rock, mineral, and ore samples by chemists and petrographers."

Acute vibration causes vasoconstriction in naïve human subjects1. Vibration-induced decrease in skin perfusion has also been reported in the rat-tail vibration model 2. After vibration exposure, rat-tail arteries demonstrate vacuoles in smooth muscle cells, similar to that caused by pharmacological vasoconstrictors3. This study addressed the effects of different frequencies, durations and patterns of vibration on lumen size and vacuole formation using the rat-tail vibration model in male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g). Methods The different groups were: 4-hr continuous vibration at 30, 60, 120 and 800 Hz; continuous exposure durations of 5 min, 1 hr and 4 hr at 60 Hz; and 4-hr cumulative exposure of 60 Hz delivered intermittently in cycles of 10 min on and 5 min off. Acceleration was set at 49 m/s2 r.m.s. for all frequencies. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage driven by a B&K motor (4809). The sham control animals were also placed in the vibration apparatus but not vibrated. Room temperature was controlled at 25 ± 1°C. Ventral arteries from proximal tail segments 7 were immersion fixed in aldehydes, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned (0.5 µm) for morphological analysis. Vascular lumen sizes were measured as the percent ratio of the lumen perimeter to internal elastic membrane length using Image J software (NIH). The number of vacuoles in the smooth muscle layer of each artery section was counted. Results Fig 1: Semithin sections of arteries. A. Sham control. B. 4-hr vibration 60 Hz. Introduction Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the operating company for a consortium of industry and government participants that produce synthetic crude oil from their leases in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Production from the $2.3 billion (1978) integrated mining, extraction, and bitumen upgrading and utility complex started in September 1978. Production is currently about 6.4 Mm3/a (40 million bbl per year) of high quality synthetic crude oil. This is done by upgrading the extracted bitumen from the oil sands mined. Plans are to increase the production to 8 Mm3/a (50 million bbl pier year) by 1989. At that time, the mining operation will be required to deliver 100 Mt/a (110 million stpy) of oil sand (ore) to the extraction plants, and handle quantities of waste ranging from 50 to 75 Mt/a (55 to 83 million stpy). The Syncrude plant is located at Mildred Lake, 40 km (25 miles) north of Fort McMurray and 480 km (300 miles) north of Edmonton, Alberta. Climate, particularly winter, is therefore a major factor affecting the design and operation of all the Syncrude production facilities. Bitumen production, consisting of overburden removal, oil/sand mining, bitumen extraction, and tailings disposal, account for about half the total SCO production costs. Considerable research and development, therefore, continues to be applied to improve both material handling and bitumen recovery methods. Potential applications for feeder breakers were identified in the material handling aspects of both overburden and oil sand mining to reduce cost and to attain planned production increments. Overburden removal Overburden materials on the leases comprise thin Pleistocene sands, gravel and fill, and sands, silts and clays of the thicker Clearwater Formation with the silt to clay components predominating. The latter contains multiple leases of hard siltstone with unconfined compressive strengths up to 148 MPa and thicknesses up 0.1 to 0.9 m (1 to 3ft). Characteristics of the overburden as well as the climatic environment and scale of operation present unique problems for the efficient removal of the material. In a bucketwheel/conveyor system, the weak silty clay formations require relatively flat working slopes for safe operation, while the siltstone lenses and frozen overburden require blasting or selective removal by other equipment. These factors, combined with the normal bucketwheel/conveyor design parameters, lead to high capital investment and relatively inefficient use of that capital. This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to present a brief history of the listing of Iron Mountain Mine as a Superfund site on the National Priorities List (NPL) and subsequent remedial actions. The mine area is located on 4,400 acres near Redding, CA, and includes underground workings, an open-pit area, waste rock dumps, and tailings piles. This property involves multiple sources of acid mine drainage (AMD) that are high in copper, zinc, and cadmium. The selected remedial actions, based on the Record of Decision of 1986, would partially cap the Richmond mineralized zone to reduce infiltration of clean water, divert clean surface waters away from contaminated areas, fill surface subsidence areas, and enlarge the Spring Creek debris dam to provide increased surge capacity. Site remediation efforts at Iron Mountain are well into the remedial design-remedial action phase. Costs to date for remedial action are $7.5 million. Details of activities and designs of remedial elements are presented and future activities discussed.

During development mining, ventilation capacity may decrease and the ventilation requirements may depart from initially planned values depending on the mining rate, increases in the methane emission rate, and changes in ventilation airway leakages. Insufficient ventilation air quantities and the occurrences of high methane liberation rates can overwhelm the existing quantity of ventilation air and result in elevated levels of methane gas during development mining. This condition can both limit the development of that section and increase the risk for an ignition that may lead to an explosion. Thus, the prediction of ventilation air requirements prior to mining can enhance worker safety by reducing the likelihood that explosive methane-air mixtures form. This study presents an approach for prediction of methane inflow rates using coalbed methane reservoir modeling. For this purpose, a two-phase coalbed reservoir model of a three-entry type roadway is developed. In the model, grids are dynamically controlled to simulate development of entries. Examples are given for methane inflow and ventilation air requirements as a function of mining rate, development section length, mining height, and the existence of degasification boreholes. This technology can be used to limit the methane concentrations occurring as a result of the influences of various coalbed and operational parameters.

It is well documented that a significant amount of the new PGM (Platinum Group Minerals) production that is coming on stream now, and over the next few years, is to come from the UG-2 reef. Clearly the reservations, or perhaps the perceived reservations, attached to the processing of this ore are no longer there. What were the metallurgical issues that delayed the exploitation of the PGM values from this reef? Traditional furnaces treating Merensky concentrates were not able to accept the concentrate produced from a UG-2 plant due to the relatively high chromite content of this product. The chromite reports to an insoluble spinel phase that accretes in the furnace, resulting in the necessity to shutdown and dig the furnace out periodically. This was clearly not an attractive economic option, so producers stayed away from it in the early days. The Merensky ore had all higher base metal credits anyway, and you needed them to get a matte fall, so there was no driving force to look seriously at the UG-2 reef. Platinum demand at this time could be easily met from the Merensky ore, so the motivation to tackle more complex ores was not there. The low price of PGMs meant that these operations were not particularly profitable and there was little effort directed at improving the operations. Concentrators were generally not run very efficiently and the emphasis was on cost reduction through increasing milling rates.

The Modified Zincex® Process, developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is highly flexible dealing with a wide range of pregnant leach solutions. No matter if those solutions are produced from primary or secondary raw materials, and/or are based on conventional leaching, pressure leaching, heap leaching or bio leaching the result is always high-purity zinc product. The zinc solvent extraction unit within the process is a very effective barrier for impurities and a buffer for the composition of the pregnant liquor. This unit achieves an extremely pure aqueous extract that can be converted into different final products. All of them are characterized by fulfilling the highest purity standards. Also, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of pregnant liquor compositions and various production capacities up to a zinc production limit over 150 000 t/a with a single solvent extraction plant.

This paper discusses the application of a computerised model based on genetic algorithms (GAs), called GenRel, for reliability assessment of underground mine hoisting systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether GenRel can be applied to predict future failure data of a mine hoisting system based on historical records of failures. The incentive of selecting the GAs for prediction of failures is that GAs are a class of evolutionary algorithms which imitate the biological evolution procedures such as reproduction, selection, crossover and mutation. The reliability of mining equipment changes over time due to an array of factors (eg equipment age, the operating environment, number and quality of repair). These factors affect the equipment's failure patterns and have complex impacts on the equipment's reliability characteristics. The failure patterns are assumed to follow a biological evolution process, and thus GAs can be considered applicable in the modelling process.To conduct the reliability assessment, a study was carried out with historical failure data of hoists in the time period from January to December 2007. Two failure data sets of two mine hoisting systems were collected from two typical underground mines in Ontario, Canada, which are denoted as the NA mine and the SB mine. The failure data sets were prepared in the format of time between failures (TBF). Then, these data sets were entered in GenRel to generate predicted failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008. The paper discusses the statistical similarity of the actual failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008 with the predicted failure data set generated by GenRel in the same time period.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion (Museum Convention Center) in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are James Harold Courtright (1908-1986), Dr. Howard L. Hartman (1924-2002), Charles Washington Merrill (1869-1956) and Kenyon E. Richard (1915-1993). The inductions will bring to 197 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

Separation and Recovery Systems, Inc. (SRS) provides on-site waste minimization and resource recovery using its state-of-the-art MX-1500 centrifuge and MX-2000 thermal desorber. The MX-1500 can process over 450 feed tons of material per day, resulting in centrifuged cake containing 20% to 60% by weight. The MX-2000 is a hollow-flite thermal processor indirectly heated by either steam or hot oil. SRS has dewatered and/or deoiled over 1,000,000 feed tons of material in the refining, chemical, and energy industries using the MX-1500. SRS estimates that over 300,000 barrels of reusable oil have been recovered from that material. Additionally, SRS has dried and/or detoxified over 150,000 wet tons of solids or soil to regulatory or customer-specified limits using the MX-2000.

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dike intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. These metasedimentary rocks have undergone three phases of folding: a first phase of recumbent folds (F1), a second phase (F2) of northerly-trending inclined folds with a prominent crenulation cleavage, and a third phase (F3) of steeply plunging folds. The granite porphyry dike has a thickness of up to 40 m and intrudes thin lamprophyre dikes along its contacts. Deflection of the crenulation cleavage around the granite dike, shearing within the dike and its sinuous outcrop pattern indicate that the granite dike has been deformed during F2 and F3. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with a first stage of magnetite-ankerite alteration. This first stage is cut by a second stage of quartz-pyrite veins and a third stage of sulphide, quartz and ankerite veins, accompanied by pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile¦pyrite-ankerite-sericite assemblages. Lamprophyre is altered to an ankerite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. The sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite. The altered granite and the veins have been deformed and recrystallised. The competent sulphide minerals pyrite and arsenopyrite are fractured and brecciated, with fractures locally filled by galena, a ductile sulphide mineral. Vein quartz shows local cataclastic and mortar textures and develops pressure shadows around arsenopyrite. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre. These features together with the style of veining and the sulphide mineralogy indicate that the mineralisation was formed from a magmatichydrothermal fluid that was sourced from the granite. Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope values of the vein minerals (quartz, ankerite and sulphides) are also consistent with a magmatic source.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 528 natural gas samples from 21 States collected during calendar year 1965 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the' Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analysis published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4
