"The High Speed 2D Analysis program allows the user to bring in data from several different sources. Of course, keyboard entry is included as a source. Other data is inputted through the serial port (X-2321 of the PC. Two types of data are transferred via the serial port. The first is the tablet digitizer data. The three types supported presently are the GTCO, tablet digitizers. and the Calcomp 2500 and 9100 series To transfer digitized data turn on the selected digitizer and place the cursor on the tablet. Enter the High Speed pmg.ram and select from the Input Program menu the Digitize Inputs(20) option and follow the instructions. TO exit the session, either a keyboard entry or a cursor button is pressed. The second type of serial port input Is from the collectors of the listed survey systems. Typically a file transfer program will be used to send the data from the collector to the PC. This topic will not be addressed at this time."

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

Jet grout column formation at large depths are prone to several uncertainties, such as inaccuracy in setting out boreholes, drilling deviation, soil variability and reduced jetting energy at the nozzle. This would result in shorter cutting distance of the jet, with potential lack of interlock between grouted columns. A design strategy for mitigating the risk should include a soil investigation program aimed at discovering potential variability in soil conditions at the locations of jetting. Determination of soil strength profiles with depth would be useful for evaluation of jetting parameters and prediction of the achievable cutting distance at any depth. Selection of design column spacing should include allowance for setting out accuracy, verticality of the boreholes and the achievable jet cutting distance. For deep jet grouting operations, it would be necessary to take into account the energy losses at the nozzle inlet; however the increase in the presiding pressure at the nozzle outlet at depth is small relative to the range of jetting pressures commonly employed and would not affect the cutting distance to any significant degree. Design column spacing should not be so close as to cause problems with ?masking? which may lead to localized ungrouted zones of soil. For effective field control, boreholes should be cased up to the top elevation of the grouted zone so that the orientation of the borehole can be measured prior to grout injection. An analytical equation for calculating the cutting distance is proposed for adjusting jetting parameters where necessary to compensate for drilling deviation and changes in soil conditions. It is preferable that jet grouting trials be executed at elevations that correspond to the actual production jet grouting depths for accurate evaluation of jet cutting performance.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulphide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

"A new office complex is being constructed within 25m of the Hudson River in New Jersey. The project, about 140m by 100m, will include 4 basements under the entire footprint. The perimeter was to be secured by a 0.8m thick diaphragm wall, laterally supported by high capacity tieback anchors to rock. Columns were to be supported on footings or piers to rock at a nominal bearing pressure of 3.8MPa at depths up to 17m. Although some variation in rock quality was observed in borings, a substantial vertical seam of weathered and/or decomposed rock, 1 to 2 meters wide by as much as 8 meters deep, was encountered during construction necessitating field redesign. In some locations, the seam dipped below rock that is more competent. Footings were redesigned for support on drilled caissons, or soft rock was excavated and replaced with concrete necessitating a reduction in bearing pressure of the footings by one half. The tower covering the south half of the site was topped out in 2002 and the garage levels in the north half of the site were completed in 2003.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONIn September 1999, a major investment company began the due diligence process to evaluate a property on the shore of the Hudson River in Jersey City, New Jersey for a new multi-use complex. The site offers a spectacular view of lower Manhattan directly across the river from the site of the former World Trade Center. The site, covering two city blocks, was previously occupied by manufacturing and office facilities of Colgate-Palmolive.The building footprint is approximately 140m by 100m, the southern half of which is occupied by a 260m tall office tower, shown in Fig. 1. As of this writing, design of the structure for the northern half of the site has not been finalized, but it is expected to comprise an 11-story office building. A glass-covered atrium will occupy the street that formerly separated the two blocks. As part of the due diligence process and preliminary design evaluation, alternatives were considered to accommodate various numbers of parking places, both above and below existing grade. A major consideration for below grade parking is the proximity of the Hudson River some 25m east of the east building line."

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

Enhancing the Flotability of Gold-Bearing Ores by a Mixture of Collectors

The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c.0.28 m3 s-1. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust that precludes the development of long term magmatic cycles at Taupo. Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2013 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2013: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Halifax, NS, Canada (formerly Metals Economics Group (MEG); 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2013 as compiled by the USGS; and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities, including economic, social and political conditions, that were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop commodity and regional compilations, reported statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2013 for 20 nonfuel mineral commodities based on surveys returned by companies primarily focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (coal, iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007. MEG included data on the commodities lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum for the first time in 2010 because of the increased topical significance of these commodities. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the MEG and SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. Budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The post-1999 budget surveys by MEG and SNL cover at least 90 percent of world?s reported nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets; the 2013 survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of these budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered is accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities.

This report describes the washability characteristics of 18 coal samples taken from 11 drill hole cores from the San Juan Basin area of New Mexico and Colorado. The ash content of these coals could generally be substantially reduced by removing the heavy impurities. The coals were characteristically low in sulfur content; only one sample contained more than 1 percent sulfur after removing the sink-I.50 specific gravity material. The coals ranged in rank from subbituminous C to high volatile C; 11 of the samples were subbituminous A. Many of these core samples came from areas where very little fieldwork has been done; consequently, an outgrowth of this work has been an increase in known coal reserves of the San Juan Basin area.

The combined 78th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 66th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 19 and 20, 2005, in Duluth, MN. More than 300 mining professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers, from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. This year’s theme was “Global Demand: A Window of Opportunity.” The meeting included a keynote address, technical presentations and a trade show. The atmosphere at this year’s meeting was upbeat. The iron ore mining industry in Minnesota is experiencing one of its biggest turnarounds in history. Because of greater demand, iron ore prices increased 20 percent during 2004 and 71.5 percent so far in 2005.

With ever rising energy costs, it is increasingly important for mines to operate with energy efficiency. As a large portion of a mine?s energy consumption is often attributed to the operation of mine ventilation fans, maintaining an efficient ventilation system is a critical pro-active way for mining companies to reduce power costs. A common way to measure a mine?s ventilation system efficiency is to calculate the volumetric efficiency, which is simply a calculation of the percentage of total mine air that is usefully employed for production. The purpose of this study is to document a nationwide comparison of the volumetric efficiency of U.S. underground coal mining operations. The results will aim to show just how efficient today?s coal mine ventilation systems are and what factors may be causing their various efficiencies and inefficiencies.

"The Samatosum Project is a base and precious metal deposit located in south central British Columbia. A dilute ore reserve of 766, 682 tonnes grading an average 1.1% copper, 3.0% zinc, 1.4% lead, 833 gram per tonne silver and 1.6 gram per tonne gold is available. The base metals occur as tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Virtually all of the silver and gold are associated with the tetrahedrite.The mill is operated at a rate of 21 tonnes per hour. Sulphur dioxide is used as a zinc depressant in the grinding circuit. Production of a Cu/Pb/Ag concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. This concentrate is then separated into Cu-Ag and Pb concentrates through a reverse flotation circuit utilizing sulphur dioxide, starch and sulphuric acid as lead depressants.The tailings from the Cu/Pb/Ag circuit are treated with copper sulphate to activate the zinc. Production of a zinc concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. Dewatering of the concentrates to 6% moisture is done with a LAROX filter press.Tailings effluent is treated with lime and sodium sulphide to precipitate out the heavy metals. The resulting sludge is treated in OYNASAND sand filtration units to produce a quality effluent."

Sillimanite, chemically named Aluminum silicate, 3Al2O3SiO2 is one of the three forms of alumino silicate polymorphs and commonly encountered in aluminous metamorphic, plutonic, and volcanic rocks and their weathering products. Most of the sillimanite deposits are granular and are of high grade available in coastal areas as associated mineral along with Titanium bearing minerals namely ilmenite, rutile etc. Sillimanite is one of the widely accepted raw materials for the manufacture of high alumina refractories (55-60 % alumina) or bricks. Sillimanite based refractory bricks are used for the lining of Blast furnaces, Arc furnaces, Soaking pits, Reheating furnaces of iron and steel, rotary kilns for cement manufacturing and general kilns for lime production. Considering the vast potential of unexploited sillimanite reserves in India, M/s Trimex Sands Pvt. Ltd., (TSPL)has set up a Mineral Sand Processing plant in 2010 at Andhra Pradesh with a capacity to produce about 50,000 tons of sillimanite per annum besides the production of various heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and garnet. Traditionally in India, sillimanite is upgraded by froth flotation technique using Oleic acid as a collector cum frother, sodium silicate as depressant and soda ash as pH regulator. At TSPL, Conventional mechanical float cells are installed to float sillimanite. In addition to the usual problems associated with conventional cells, poor flow ability of the sillimanite concentrate is experienced in dry circuit due to the presence of sodium oleate. Fine garnet in the sillimanite concentrate contributes to high iron content in the final product, making sillimanite separation a nightmare for operators (lower recoveries coupled with inferior grades). Various efforts were made to improve the performance of the circuit such as introduction of additional frother like MIBC, optimizing the operating parameters such as pulp density, collector dosage, depressant dosage, air flow rate, pH etc., use of collector aids, stage wise addition of reagents etc. The challenges faced to produce a sillimanite product with stringent quality norms and the efforts made to improve the grade and recovery are described in this paper. Things are going well in the mining and construction industries world-wide. So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

Industrial shale-oil operations in North America and Europe predated the Drake discovery, but, since then, most have succumbed to competition from petroleum. However, the existence of enormous oil-shale resources in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming [estimated at over a trillion bbl of shale oil in place] and the advancement of United States oil- shale technology by research and development programs of government and industry during the past 15 years point to a natural partnership of petroleum and oil shale to meet the accelerating energy demands of the future. The utilization of oil shale is not a question of limited petroleum supplies, but one of economics. Two factors are expected to improve the economic outlook for industrial shale oil production -- a rise in petroleum replacement cost and further advances in oil-shale technology.
