The performance of microemulsified diesel and conventional diesel collectors in coal flotation was compared by flotation indicators, including combustible recovery, ash content of the clean coal, and the flotation index. An efficient separation with lower dosage was obtained using the microemulsified diesel collector. Under optimum separation conditions, the microemulsion consumption was 100 g/t less compared with diesel. The saving in diesel consumption using the microemulsion reached about 70%, disregarding the consumption of the surfactant and cosurfactant. Frothing tests showed that the frother dosage was decreased by using the microemulsion collector, because of the surfactant and cosurfactant added during preparation. The microemulsified diesel collector is superior to the conventional diesel collector in terms of diesel consumption and separation efficiency, but the selectivity requires further improvement. The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

In July of 2013, Lundin Mining acquired the 2,000 tpd Eagle nickel and copper project from Rio Tinto. The project had been put on hold earlier in the year and construction was approximately 50% complete. Lundin immediately accelerated project activities and by September of 2014 the project was constructed, commissioned and ramping up. The newly commissioned facilities went on to reach design throughput, recovery and product quality targets by the end of the year. This was accomplished ahead of schedule and below budget despite numerous obstacles including the worst winter on record in the past 50 years for the area. What led to the success of the project, and in particular the commissioning phase of the project? This paper takes a high level look back and provides an overview of the methodology used, key issues encountered and lessons learned to answer this question.

Exxaro Mining?s Matla Coal situated in Mpumalanga, South Africa operates two shortwall faces on the No 4 and No 2 seam while the No 5 seam has also been longwalled in the past. Severe strata loading events have lead to a number of serious roof falls on the wall face (facebreaks) resulting in safety threats as well as considerable production losses. In 2002 the No 4 seam shortwall suffered a facebreak restricted mainly to the tailgate side of the mining panel due to a thick, near surface dolerite sill not breaking properly. This was partly due to the premature suspension of longwalling in the overlying No 5 seam. The resultant overloading lead to severe pillar damage and subsequent bord collapse. Surface pre-split blasting was successfully used to relieve the pressure as well as to pre-condition the dolerite above the following two panels. The shortwall on the No 2 seam has experienced mid-face loading due to No 4 seam chain pillars lying over this area and creating a secondary cantilever effect. Pre-split blasting of the solid rock above the No 4 seam pillars has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of facebreaks. The panel layout of the No 2 seam was subsequently changed so that the chain pillars on both the No 4 and No 2 seam are superimposed whereas previously they were offset.

"Sand and gravel are the second and third largest minerals in production in Brazil, and this is increasing noticeably. The extraction of natural sand from river beds is increasingly restricted and most of the sand used in large cities comes in from more than 150 km away, resulting in high transportation costs. As a result, it has become more common to use crushed rock as artificial sand. The main difficulties in this process are controlling the shape of the particles and the content of deleterious materials, such as mica. Within this situation, this paper presents an alternative to using artificial sand for concrete use. Our procedure involves the following steps: a) sampling sand from different production days, b) characterizing the bulk sample by particle size and shape distribution, chemical composition by X ray fluorescence and mineralogical composition by X ray diffraction, c) removing fine grains by air classifier, d) performing intensive attrition with high pressure washing and e) characterizing products. The results demonstrated that this sample contains a huge proportion of fine grains and a notable content of mica, which is distributed along all sieve fractions. The presence of mica makes the use of sand in concrete unfeasible, moreover scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that this phylossilicate is finely grained and associated with coarse fractions. Thus, the removal of fine fractions made possible a partial reduction in mica content. Furthermore, intensive attrition demonstrated that the procedure was efficient to remove most of the mica while also reducing sharp edges, which improved the shape of these particles."

Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide (60%) ores of the western Cordillera compose a distinct class of deposits although they vary widely in detail and perhaps genesis. They have been important sources of lead, zinc, copper, silver, gold, and more rarely, molybdenum, tin, and tungsten in complex mineral assemblages usually dominated by pyrite. They occur as concordant stratiform bodies, as discordant mantos, and as chimneys crossing tens of meters of section; many are associated with faults and breccia bodies. Environments of formation of carbonate hosts range from craton basin to shelf with ages from Proterozoic to Cretaceous; in many instances, dating has shown mineralization to be significantly younger than hosts. Temperatures of formation determined for many deposits are high (200°-400°) and many districts are centers of igneous activity manifested by dikes, sills, and stocks. However, direct cause and effect relationships have been difficult to establish. Many important problems attend the renewed interest and study of these deposits and include questions of metal-sulfur sources, metallization processes and histories, geological controls at all scales, and relationships to broader patterns of metallogeny.

Hand scaling is a physically demanding job and is responsible for numerous overexertion injuries in mining. This experiment studied rib scaling from an elevated bucket to examine force generation capabilities and electromyographic responses to a prying subtask. Subjects exerted force using two bars (steel and fiberglass) at five target heights. Work height significantly affected peak prying force during scaling activities with highest force capacity at the lowest level (p = 0.0188). Bar type did not affect force generation (p = 0.7843): However, use of the fiberglass bar required significantly more muscle activity to achieve the same force (p < 0.05). It was concluded that miners should scale points on the rock face that are below their knees, and reposition the bucket as often as necessary to do so. Additional research is needed to fully understand the impact of bar type on the physical demands of an entire scaling task.

Asset availability has been a longstanding objective in mining and mineral processing plants around the world. Enormous resources in both dollars and manpower are invested in improvement efforts to achieve higher asset availability. One dimension of asset availability is the time equipment is out of service for large scale planned maintenance activity: grinding mills, kilns, furnaces, mobile equipment, shovels and draglines are all regularly taken out of service for extended repairs and service. The speed, cost and quality of these planned outages provide an opportunity to increase asset availability. Equipment shutdowns are projects that are executed in a compressed time period. This paper will describe how the overall time and cost of equipment shutdowns were significantly reduced at Cliffs Natural Resources Michigan Operations (CNRMO) through the introduction of the Critical Chain Project Management techniques.

Workers using vibrating hand tools have the potential for developing health problems associated with repeated forceful actions and exposures to hand-transmitted vibration. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and other hand-arm system disorders have been associated with such exposures.1-2 To better assess health risks, comprehensive evaluations of these exposures must include quantitative assessments of hand-tool coupling forces; unfortunately, no standardized method for quantifying hand forces exists. Handle instrumentation may be ill-suited for some field environments. Psychophysical force-recall techniques may provide alternatives to handle instrumentation. A thorough understanding of the effects of vibration and other factors on force-recall accuracy and reliability is important before such methods are applied in risk assessments. Methods In this study, the effects of vibration and other factors on the accuracy of psychophysical force-recall were explored in two experiments. Twelve male subjects participated in the first experiment. The second experiment employed 20 participants (10 female, 10 male). In each experiment, participants applied specific grip and push forces to an instrumented handle mounted on a shaker system. Participants were exposed to sinusoidal vibration at frequencies that ranged from 0 Hz to 250 Hz. Three levels of applied force (low: grip = 15 N/push = 25 N, medium: grip = 30 N/push = 50 N, and high: grip = 45 N/push = 75 N ) and two levels of vibration magnitude (low: ANSI 4-8-hr limit and high: ANSI <0.5-hr limit)3 were examined. During the vibration exposure period, participants were provided with visual feedback while they attempted to “memorize” the applied grip and push forces. At the conclusion of the vibration exposure/force memorization period and a controlled rest period, the participants tried to duplicate the grip and push forces on a non-vibrating handle without the aid of visual feedback. The effects of different vibration frequencies, vibration magnitudes, and grip and push force levels were tested in a random order from trial to trial. Results Participants tended to overestimate grip and push forces. Depending on exposure conditions, error means ranged from 2 N to 10 N. The ANOVA revealed that force-recall errors for exposures between 31.5 Hz and 63 Hz were significantly higher than those at other vibration frequencies (p < 0.05). The frequency effect is depicted in Figure 1. Error means were greater when participants were exposed to the higher vibration magnitude (mean = 9.1 N, 95% CI = 8.2-10.1 N) when compared with the lower vibration magnitude (mean = 4.9 N, 95% CI = 3.9-5.8 N) (p < 0.05). In its 2001 diesel particulate matter (DPM) rule for metal and nonmetal underground mines, MSHA established an interim concentration limit of 400 micrograms of total carbon (TC) per cubic meter of air (400TCµg/m3), and a final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3, to be phased in over five years. Following a court challenge to the 2001 rule, MSHA, industry and organized labor reached a partial settlement of the litigation under which the agency agreed to issue a proposal to amend the 2001 rule by, among other things, changing the surrogate from TC to elemental carbon (EC), applying MSHA&apos;s traditional hierarchy of controls, and revising requirements for one-year special extensions for complying with the final DPM exposure limit. MSHA issued a final rule in 2005 converting the interim concentration limit from 400TCµg/m3 to 308 micrograms of EC per cubic meter of air (308ECµg/m3) based on a miner?s personal exposure. Pending further rulemaking, MSHA retained the final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3. In May 2006, MSHA issued a final rule that clarified that the final limit of 160TCµg/m3 would be based on a miner?s personal exposure rather than as a concentration limit. The 2006 rule also phased in the final DPM limit in three steps over two years, beginning in May 2006 at 308ECµg/m3, followed eight months later in January 2007 with a limit of 350TCµg/m3, and finally reaching 160TCµg/m3 in May 2008. Also in the 2006 rule, MSHA committed to converting the 160TCµg/m3 limit to an EC limit in future rulemaking. This paper reviews the DPM exposure limits in the context of the MSHA rulemakings and discusses the DPM engineering controls that were utilized by mine operators to attain compliance with each progressively lower limit.

This paper concentrates on ground control innovation in Europe since the first Morgantown conference, mainly from a UK perspective. In particular, it describes the rock engineering and ground control tools developed to address the mine support and design problems associated with coal mining at great depth in areas influenced by previous workings. The differences in approach across the Western European industries are also examined. Perhaps the most significant change in the period has been in the science of coal mine rock mechanics itself, with support design now based firmly on measurement, analysis and understanding. The ground control innovations described here have played their part in increasing the efficiency with which coal is mined and in increasing safety to the extent that fall of ground accidents are now rare.

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of the two major iron ore agglomeration processes, sintering and pelletising, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The following agglomeration processing routes, with the fuel options shown, were investigated:sintering with combined natural gas/coke breeze or charcoal as fuel, grate-kiln pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel, and straight-grate pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel. Inventory data for each process derived from the literature, and in some instances supplemented by additional simulations and calculations, were used in the study and the environmental impact categories considered were gross energy requirement (GER), global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). The results of the study showed that the GER, GWP and AP for a sinter plant are higher than those for a pellet plant for the same amount of metallic iron in the agglomerated products. These results are partly due to higher consumption of solid fuel and flux in the sintering process. However, it should be pointed out that the study only compared substantially fluxed sinters with acid pellets that may require additional flux (and hence potentially more greenhouse gases emissions) to be a balanced blast furnace feedstock. Extending the LCA to the blast furnace process stage was beyond the scope of the current study. Within the sinter plant, the sintering stage itself is the largest contributor to the GER, GWP and AP. In the case of pellet plant, the pellet induration stage is the largest contributor to the various environmental impacts. The GER and GWP of a straight-grate pellet plant are marginally higher than those of a grate-kiln pellet plant due to the higher electrical power required by the straight grate system. The substitution of coke breeze with charcoal in the sintering process results in an increase in GER but a decrease in GWP. However, a substantial proportion of the GER is derived from renewable sources (wood), resulting in a decrease in the non-renewable components of this environmental impact. Given the source of the inventory data and the assumptions and approximations made in carrying out the LCAs, it is emphasised that the results presented in this paper should be considered as indicative rather than as definitive results for the two iron ore agglomeration processing routes considered.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. In these cases, a portion of the unwanted sulfur dioxide gas can be used to recover gold in magnetite containing calcines as an economic incentive.CITATION:Guresin, N, Blanco, S and Dunne, R, 2013. This paper describes a focus of work presently being conducted at the Rock Mechanics Research Group at the University of British Columbia. The underhand method under consolidated fill ensures a high recovery under an engineered back that is comprised of cemented rock fill and/or cemented paste fill. This method of mining is generally necessary either due to a weak rock mass comprising the immediate back and/or high induced back stresses. A major concern in the design of sill mats is the loading and strengths associated with the overlying sill mat. This paper reviews past practice coupled with present observations and measurements from over ten(10) mines throughout North America. It outlines areas of concern in terms of design requirements.

As drilling and blasting is carried out in an urban tunnel, which is adjacent to an existing building or structure, the balance between blasting-induced vibration reduction and drivage efficiency is a most important issue that must be resolved properly. Therefore, a new cut blast method named Stepped V-cut millisecond blasting (SV-cut) was developed by optimizing the most common used Vertical V-cut blasting method (V-cut). The most significant features of SV-cut lie in the utilization of sublevel interval charging structure and millisecond delay blasting technology in cut hole and the cut-cavity formed from outside to inside sequentially. SV-cut provides advantages of high borehole using ratio, low vibration level, and satisfied advance per attack. Based on the principal of millisecond blasting, the rock fragmentation process and the vibration reduction mechanism of SV-cut are analyzed. Determining methods of blasting parameters, which do have significant effect on vibration intensity and cut-cavity formed quality, are proposed according to the forming requirement of both outer and inner cut-cavity and vibration reduction. In order to compare the performance between SV-cut and V-cut, field blasting experiments were performed in the blasting engineering of Yamalike twin-arc tunnel, which closely passes over aged parallel tunnels. Blasting results show that SV-cut blasting is proven as an effective tunnel blasting method for both increasing blasting effects and decreasing blasting vibration. Comparing SV-cut with V-cut, the SV-cut can increase blasting drivage about 8.5% and reduce the vibration intensity induced by cut hole blasting 30% at least.

Historically, coal miners have known that roof shales can deteriorate in contact with humid mine air, causing massive roof falls and injuries from falling rock. It is critical to recognize rocks prone to weathering and to adequately support these rocks in order to ensure the long-term stability of the openings. In a recent study, NIOSH has used a wet/dry cycling test to determine the moisture sensitivity of over 800 specimens of roof rock from 25 U.S. coal mines. Fireclays and some gray shales are the most moisture-sensitive. Rocks with disturbed bedding, in contrast to flat-bedded rocks, are also more sensitive to water. Black shales are relatively un-reactive to moisture and serve to protect more reactive gray shales above. Mines that have roof rocks with moisture-sensitivity indexes above 40% can experience slaking roof conditions, and many require high coverage surface controls. Three case studies are presented in which the moisture-sensitivity index is correlated to roof conditions underground, and can be used to indicate long term deterioration. Engineering measures are described to control moisture-sensitive roof. In one case, roof screen not only reduces injuries from rock fall but also is shown to reduce roof falls.
