To carry out a physicochemical substantiation of a transition to ?soft? modes of reduction of calcine obtained by desulfurizing roasting of nickel concentrate produced as a result of copper-nickel converter matte separation in a nickel anode production circuit, an analysis has been conducted of the macrokinetic behavior of actual calcine samples in the presence of gaseous H2-CO mixtures and solid reductant additives. Within a temperature range of 900°C to 1100°C the main regularities typical of the calcine reduction process with individual gases (H2, CO) also take place when using a gaseous mixture. Under the conditions of low-temperature (900°C to 1000°C) nickel oxide reduction with products of fuel oil conversion in the presence of coke, the role of the latter is insignificant from the technological viewpoint. As a result of the present investigations, we have obtained analytical expressions of macrokinetic parameters of the reaction interaction within the [NiO] calcine-H2-CO-C-CO2-H2O-O2-N2 system.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University (MTU) are collaborating to develop an apparatus for measuring diesel tailpipe emissions in underground mines. A tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) is described that dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory-grade instruments. Concentrations of CO and CO2 measured by the EMA were usually within ± 14 pct of concentrations measured by laboratory-grade instruments for CO and ±20 pct for CO2. EMA¬ measured DPM concentrations were, on average, 29 pct lower than those measured by laboratory-grade instruments, with the differences being fairly consistent. The CO and CO2 differences are related to the method of calculating the EMA's dilution ratio, and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminary analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

This review paper describes recent advances that have been made at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in Brisbane in developing a framework for simulating the flotation process. The work has been carried out collaboratively with the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town in South Africa (UCT), as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. The framework consists of four components, namely – the mathematical model of the flotation process, suitable measurement tools for characterising the flotation cell, a computer program for modelling and simulating the process and the plantas for testing and validating the flotation models. A brief description of the model is first presented, then a number of applications of the model are described. The paper shows how the model can be used to optimise the performance of flotation cells, and then two case studies on the modelling methodologies are described. Finally the current and future plans of the project are outlined.

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

Consider the case of a mining company with N investment opportunities in projects of different commodities. The problem is: since the company has limitation of capital, equipments, technical staffs, etc, what is the best portfolio of production projects in order to maximize expectations from shareholders? In the no-longer past, the traditional method for the selection of portfolio of projects was the rank-an-cut method. But, this does not properly account for the risk to which the company is exposed. The Markowitz?s Mean-Variance is an advance because the risk of the NPV can be estimated at the level of the company or even division of the corporation. The final product of the Markowitz?s model is the efficient frontier, in which, the manager can clearly understand the maximum return from existing assets and the associated risk level - but this model does not recommend which one is the best portfolio. In this paper we present a model to select the best portfolio considering not only economic indicators, but also requirements of production, constraint in investments, etc. We show that if investors are diversified, managers should select projects with highest return, regardless of risk. However, in practice, if bonuses of managers are tied to their performance, the choice for portfolio with lower return and risk can happen. Numerical application considering typical portfolio of large mining company is used as example.

Colin Maynard Spence was born in November 1921, and was educated at the Durban Preparatory and High Schools, in both of which he was a Dux Scholar. He graduated from the University of Natal in 1942 with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. In 1958 he received a Diploma in Town Planning from the same university. Among the impurities present in phosphate ore, dolomite is the most difficult to remove. This is because dolomite and phosphate have similar chemical compositions and because the dissolved species of dolomite is adsorbed on the surface of the phosphate mineral. A new amphoteric surfactant was found to be a suitable collector for the separation of dolomite and phosphate. Flotation results showed that the new amphoteric collector had a high flotation selectivity for dolomite over a wide pH range. studies on the flotation of francolite and dolomite in each other's supernatant demonstrated that the dissolved ions had little effect on the selectivity of the new collector. It was found, however, that the dissolved ions were detrimental to the flotation separation using sodium oleate as collector. From a mixture offrancolite and dolomite containing 26.2% P2O5, a phosphate concentrate containing 35.2% P205 with a 90% recovery was obtained using 290 g/t of the amphoteric collector. The rejection of MgO was 81.41 %.

As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

"An index to evaluate the amenability for processing of different coals is implemented. The index is based on the well-known Mayer-curve or M-curve. The index is superior to other existing indices and is implemented using Microsoft-Excel™. Several coals are used to demonstrate the implementation of the index proposed.IntroductionIn 1950, Mayer introduced a curve that carries the information embedded in the fir s t three curves or ash curves of the conventional washability tables and curves (Peng et al., 1979; Osborne, 1988). The curve was labeled the Mcurve (abbreviation for Mittlewertkurve in German or the Mayer- curve). The main idea behind the curve is to use the ordinate for the cumulative mass and the abscissa for the ash (attribute) mass. Specific slopes on the resulting curve represent the cumulative float, cumulative sink, and elementary ash (attribute) contents (Mayer, 1950, 1953, 1957; Venkatesan, 1975; Osborne, 1988; Salama, 1989). Beyond the ash values, the curve carries graphical information that can be used in evaluating coal processing characteristics. Consequently, it becomes possible to present several raw coals on a single diagram, thus making it easier to compare their processing characteristics. This is particularly useful in comparing various size ranges of raw coal or the same size range from different seams. Therefore, the M-curve is adopted as a vehicle for developing the “processing (washing) characteristics index” implemented in this paper."

The ability to predict the performance of an explosive relies upon having a Reaction Rate Law and knowing its functional dependence upon various parameters of the explosive. In particular, emulsion explosives have a matrix cell size and may be sensitized with glass or plastic microballoons. The cell size dependence should. be very nearly the spherical grain burning dependence upon web that appears in the reaction rate laws for ball gun powder. The dependence of the reaction rate law upon the parameters of the sensitizing microballoons has been explored using hydrocode analysis of the pressure field produced by the collapse of a microballoon. This pressure field provides an increase in pressure in the vicinity of the microballoon which, in turn, increases the rate of reaction within this field and provides the energy release that must be achieved in order to have a steady state detonation for use as a blasting agent. Hydrocode analysis allows the determination of an approximate functional form for the reaction rate law which shows the dependence upon the size, type, and quantity of microballoons. This presentation includes the theoretical background and the determined functional form of the reaction rate law.

The position of Australia as a continuing long-term supplier of mineral sands, and their upgraded products, has been reinforced with the discovery of the extensive mineral reserves in the Murray Basin, an area covering parts of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. A major impurity in the Murray Basin is chromium, mainly present in ilmenite concentrates as individual chrome spinel grains. Magnetizing roast treatments are being evaluated as a means of removing the chrome spinel impurity from the ilmenite and as a result of the roast and magnetic separation treatments, the chrome spinels can be expected to be concentrated in the non-magnetic reject fractions. It is from these fractions that attempts were made in this study to recover a chromium-rich product by magnetic fractionation and by application of flotation. The high gauss non-magnetic rejects from the roasting of a primary and a secondary ilmenite fraction were magnetically fractionated to obtain a product with 40.5 and 28.7 per cent Cr2O3,respectively. From the high gauss non-magnetic reject from the roasting of a primary ilmenite, flotation produced a chromium-rich product assaying 29.5 wt per cent Cr2O3at 69.0 per cent recovery. In another test a magnetic fraction assaying 32.9 wt per cent Cr2O3was floated to yield a chromium-rich product with 39.7 wt per cent Cr2O3at 96.4 per cent recovery. X-ray diffraction patterns of all the products indicated that the spinel concentrated was a ferroan magnesiochromite with rutile, ilmenite and hematite as impurities. Since all products were from a single pass, further processing can be expected to remove the impurity minerals and yield higher grade products. The material produced from the Murray Basin ilmenites in this study had similar compositions to commercial chromite ores, except for titania levels that were much higher. The high titania levels were due to residual rutile in the products, but it is expected that this can be removed with further processing. The mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin are scattered over a wide area and the amount of chromite that may be produced from each of these deposits is unlikely to be sufficient to support an export market. Consequently, any chromite produced in the Murray Basin will most likely need to be processed locally to value added products for a niche market such as chemicals production. This volume, the first of a six volume final report, provides an executive summary of the research and results carried out under a grant from the U. S. Bureau of Mines on underground coal mine ventilation. Under the project, a mine ventilation simulator was developed. Sensitivity of leakage and friction factors on the total quantity and pressure requirements was studied. The simulator was applied to a new mine under development, and to an operating mine, to demonstrate the usefulness of the simulator in ventilation planning and in evaluating proposed changes to existing ventilation system. Twenty-three companies mined kaolin in nine States in 2004. Production was estimated to be 7.6 Mt (8.3 million st) valued at $912 million, based on preliminary data. This was a slight decrease from 7.68 Mt (8.46 million st) valued at $939 million in 2003.Georgia was the leading producer state with an estimated 6.5 Mt (7.1 million st) in production. It was followed, in decreasing order of tonnage, by South Carolina, Alabama, California, Texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina. Georgia accounted for nearly the entire domestic water-washed, delaminated, and pigment-grade calcined kaolin production. Consumption Sales to the paper industry accounted for 49 percent of domestic sales and 64 percent of total sales. Other major markets for domestic sales were refractory products (10 percent), paint (5 percent), fiberglass (4 percent), catalysts (3 percent) and rubber (2 percent).Paper coating and filler markets accounted for about 87percent of export sales of kaolin.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has developed the Peñasquito property to produce an average annual production of 120 kilo tonnes of lead containing 0.5 million oz gold and 30 million oz silver and 250 kilo tonnes of zinc containing 20 thousand oz gold and 1.5 million oz silver.. The Peñasquito property covers a 39,000 hectare area in the western half of the Concepción del Oro district in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, approximately 24°45'N latitude/101°30'W longitude. The sulfide reserves are 1,009 million tonnes containing 3.33 million tonnes of lead, 7.26 million tonnes of zinc, 16.5 million ounces of gold and 1,000 million ounces of silver. This paper describes the work to justify the installation of HPGR to process the crushed SAG mill pebbles. The SAG mill-Ball mill and Cone crusher (SABC) grinding circuit is an accepted grinding circuit to optimize power consumption relative to throughput. The installation of a HPGR to process the Cone crusher product is the next step in optimizing the power consumption relative to throughput. The concern expressed by some on not moving on this change in grinding circuit was the capital and operating cost of a HPGR. The pebbles from the SAG mill can be the more abrasive and are the harder particles of the ore. Goldcorp investigated the wear and processing costs of installing a HPGR to treat the crushed pebbles. The conclusion was the installation would be a very positive economic factor in the operation of Peñasquito. This is the first application of the use of HPGR to process crushed pebbles. Minera Peñasquito and M3 Engineering selected Polysius to provide a Polycom 2417 with twin 3,000 kW drives. A comprehensive test program at Polysius has shown for 7% higher circuit power it is possible to get approx 23% higher tonnage. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies and with proper control of the transfer size from the SAG to Ball mill circuit there is the potential to achieve 65,000 mtpd per line or a 30% total capacity increase. The cost of power for this increase in grinding capacity is 4.8 kWh/tonne.

Bioleaching of nickel laterite ores is the extraction technology based on the use of heterotrophic micro-organisms and their organic acid products to dissolve metals from oxide minerals. This study examined the chemical leaching kinetics of limonite and nontronite ores with metabolites including citric, lactic and malic acids. The leaching process was found to follow the chemically controlled model. The leaching kinetics was found to be significantly influenced by the acid strength or dissociation of acids in solution. Although increasing the acid strength increased the rates of leaching, this trend was not indefinite. An optimal acid concentration that defined the fastest leaching rates was identified for each acid. The amenabilities of the minerals hosting the nickel and cobalt in limonite and nontronite to organic acid leaching were also established.

Electrostatic separation of non-conductive materials can be accomplished by triboelectric charging. The efficiency of convential separators becomes worse in the size range below about 100 ¦m. These problems are solved by developing a new double-drum-separator. The investigations have shown the possibility of separating very fine mineral mixtures (eg quartz/calcite) in a strong electric field after tribo-charging in a special dust-feeder. The paper reports about the influence of particle size and field intensity on the separation and deals furthermore with the problem of desagglomeration.

"Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is at present B,C.'s only asbestos mining company, and has been actively engaged in the management and operation of the Cassiar Mine since the early 1950's. The Cassiar operations are located between 3,500' and 6,600' elevation in a secluded mountainous area of northern B.C., approximately 100 miles by road southwest of Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory. Climatic conditions in this area range from mild warm in the summer, to extremely cold during the long winter period.The minesite itself is located over a mile above sea level at the top of McDame Mountain, where year round 24 hours per day miners extract the chrysotile ore from the surrounding waste by standard open pit techniques. The ore body dips into the mountain at about a 45° angle, and as the mining progresses, larger stripping ratios are required. Waste to ore ratio this year will be more than 10 to l whereas only a few years ago ratios of 3 or 4 to l were possible. After drilling, blasting, and loading by shovel onto trucks, the asbestos ore is transported to the Primary Crushing Plant for crushing prior to transport by aerial tramway more than three miles to the Concentrator and Mill in the valley below, where the fibre is extracted from the barren host rock serpentine and milled into numerous grades for shipment to asbestos users round the world. The major air usage is associated with the milling process, presently requiring over 500,000 CFM, with future requirements expected to exceed 840,000 CFM by the end of the decade."
