This paper points out two key elements in resource trade in general and the Canada-Japan relationship in particular. The first is that the advanced countries have a more important role than one would expect in the supply of resources in world trade. Canada 's dual role as a major resource supplier in conjunction with an advanced economy will continue to increase. The second point is the heavy reliance on foreign resource supplies in some advanced economies, particularly in Japan. Finally, as regard the future of the Canada-Japan economic relationship, particularly .in resource development, it is suggested that trade could be enhanced by an accelerated exchange of various types of resources between the two countries. These include natural resource commodities as well as the more abstract capital, technological and human resources.

In the U.S. coal mining industry, most spontaneous combustion fires occur in longwall or worked-out gob areas. In order to reduce the fire hazard caused by spontaneous combustion, it is important to understand how ventilation and gob characteristics affect the spontaneous heating process. Given the difficulty to conduct field tests in such an environment, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to investigate the effects of ventilation and gob characteristics on the spontaneous heating process in longwall gob areas. Two longwall panels with a bleeder ventilation system were simulated. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using the Arrhenius rate law and kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale studies. The heat generated from the spontaneous heating is transported by convection and conduction, and oxygen and the oxidation products are transported by convection and diffusion. Unsteady state simulations were conducted with different ventilation conditions and gob permeability distributions. The ventilation parameters varied in the simulations are the pressure at the bottom of the bleeder shaft and regulator resistance in the second entry inby the longwall face.

"INTRODUCTION The Cphir Hill Consolidated mine was examined 2/ in January 1944. It was recommended that the mine be explored for the purpose of increasing of lead and zinc ore.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work at the mine in June 1944 and completed it in June 1945. The work was planned to indicate ore that could be developed and extracted quickly and consisted of core drilling and trenching.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Its the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by cash exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The work reported on in this paper was conducted under the supervision of S. R. Bowie Resources, LLC (Bowie) has been using the Stability Mapping System (SMS) developed by Dr. Keith Heasley, West Virginia University, since 2005. Seven three-entry longwall gateroads, four longwall panels and a five-entry set of mains have been mined in two different seams in areas originally analyzed with the SMS. This paper compares predictions of mining conditions based on the SMS with actual mining conditions. Specific comparisons include longwall and continuous miner (CM) productivity, longwall tailgate response and support and CM roof bolting requirements. The paper also discusses current thoughts at Bowie on the use of different weighting factors for CM development, longwall face conditions and longwall tailgate support requirements.

concentrations) and physical nature of receiving streams, which in turn affects the stream ecosystem. Benthic macroinvertebrates are used to illustrate these impacts, and to investigate natural recovery in affected streams. In Charming Creek, a severely impacted stream in the Buller District, the macroinvertebrate community recovers diversity and the proportion of sensitive species (EPT) in the community is more significant with increasing downstream distance from the source of AMD. This is most likely due to dilution of AMD contaminated water by tributaries to the Charming Creek mainstream. Other impacted systems with less dilution from tributaries did not display similar levels of recovery. The effectiveness of remediation products BauxsolÖ and Zeolite was investigated using laboratory trials. Both products mitigated the toxicity of AMD and enhanced the survival of mayflies exposed to AMD contaminated water. Such products may be of use in the New Zealand environment but are likely to be most effective in conjunction with other systems (eg wetlands). Mitigating the impacts of AMD on stream ecosystems needs to include systems to directly address water chemistry issues (low pH, high metal concentrations) as a component of a holistic approach to restoring environmental conditions.

I was lucky to land a job in the powder business. I was looking for some way to support my wife and first child to be when I saw an ad in the Hercules magazine, “Explosives Engineer” for technical representatives. I answered the ad in hopes that a geologist might find something else to do besides sit oil wells or “doodlebug” for oil. Both of these occupations I had tried and while the money was good the life was a bit erratic. The Army also wasn’t made for a guy who asked too many questions although my two plus years in uniform were interesting and in a few cases fun.

Due to economic aspects and environmental regulations recycling of slag and waste from ferroalloy production became a very important issue for the companies during the last years. The treatment of slag depends prior on the composition, especially on their content of valuable metals and impurities. The final aim should be a total re-use of these materials in the industry e.g. cement industry, pig-iron production etc.. Therefore, to reach the required physical and chemical properties for a further use, possibilities of a metallurgical treatment have been investigated. The conditioning of slag with a high V-, Mo- and P-content via reducing metal bath showed to be one alternative. To determine the optimal process parameters, practical investigations with different slag compositions and thermodynamic calculations were carried out.

Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

Intensive process and technology improvements related to the BOF converter — the key process to increase steel plant productivity and stability — have been performed at Ternium Brazil. This paper details the road map for process developments and investments in equipment technology, as well as the results achieved. The main topics of this development are the process control and optimization systems, slag forming model, oxygen blowing pattern, end-of-blow point control and slag carryover control. The outcomes of this development are improvements in the reblow rate, end-of-blow oxidation, direct tapping, slag carryover, slopping ratio, metallic yield and lining life.

Part of the work of the Precious Metals Section is to conduct oretesting experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts or areas . The projects are authorized by the Metallurgical Division , and only those ores in which gold and silver or gold or silver constitute an essential part of the total values are assigned to the Precious Metals Section . Such ores include those containing the precious metals only as commercially important ingredients , as well as those containing base metals such as copper , lead , and zinc along with the gold and silver . In many instances the "ore " may be a tailing product of a grade good enough to warrant retreatment , or a concentrate for which it is desirable to develop a method of treatment to avoid the expense of shipment to a smelter . It is evident that in general the greater part of this ore - testing work is done according to standard testing procedure , such as cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity - concentration , and flotation , or a combination of these methods . The standard methods of conducting such tests have been outlined in previous reports of ore - testing studies . However , since the inauguration of this oretesting program 6 years ago , the ores submitted under authorization have become increasingly more refractory to simple methods of treatment. Consequently, a considerable number of the projects completed during the fiscal year 1941 have required an unusual amount of work and in some instances have developed into real research problems . This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors.   Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs.   New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt.   Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October.   The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007.   Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

The need for yieldable ground support, particularly in high stress or deep mining conditions, has grown in recent years. This paper highlights some of the current industry limitations and provides selection criteria for a new yielding ground support system, DSI?s Dynatork Bolt. This bolt distinguishes itself by withstanding 16 ? 30 kJ of energy deflecting loads anywhere from 7 ? 20 tons (depending on the energy). A summary of the laboratory test results and case studies will also be presented as a measure of the performance of this dynamic product.

Without an adequate data sample there can be no Reliability Analysis (RA). Without analysis there can be no systematic, verifiable improvement in reliability or in operational economy. A sample is a collection of life cycles. A beginning and ending event define a failure mode life cycle. Well known obstacles impede the reliability engineer in his role to analyze maintenance data. The main problem lies in the difficulty to obtain analyzable data samples. Although modern Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMSs) should provide the needed information they rarely deliver samples of adequate quality. Cerrejon, an integrated mining operation in Colombia, South America solved the information management problem by applying a "Living Reliability Centered Maintenance (LRCM)" process to its fleets of Trucks, Graders, Dozers, Loaders, and Shovels. This paper describes a method wherein completed work orders capture reliability analysis enabling information. The 'right' maintenance observations reference significant failure modes. Work orders link to records in a continuously growing Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) structured knowledge base. Grouped and filtered knowledge-to-work order links, being instances of failure modes, provide the samples required by reliability analysis software tools and methods. LRCM software and related procedures facilitate the growth of knowledge, manage the work order-to-RCM relationship, and generate samples for subsequent reliability analysis.

"A computer model has been developed to predict grain structures in alloys solidified under unidirectional flow using a combination of three techniques -- solution of the equations for flow of an incompressible fluid bounded by curved surfaces by the SOLA-SURF algorithm, calculation of heat flow by a finite difference method, and simulation of grain formation by a two-dimensional cellular automaton (CA) model. The changing rigid surface has been taken into account. Heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation are considered, and the growth kinetics of a dendrite tip are evaluated by the Kurz-Giovanola-Trivedi (KGT) model. These calculations were applied to solidification of an Al-4.5% Cu alloy flowing over a chill on the bottom of a channel, a system for which experimental results were available. Using a variety of flow rates and superheats, agreement between the computed and experimental results were very good including transitions between columnar and equiaxed grains, the aspect ratio of the grains, and the inclination of the grains to the flow.IntroductionModeling of casting and solidification processes has developed over the years along two distinct tracks: (1.) modeling of macroscopic heat transfer and fluid flow for design purposes, and (2.) modeling of microscopic processes such as nucleation and growth in order to improve the scientific understanding of the phenomena involved. The present work is an attempt to combine the macroscopic and microscopic approaches for the solidification of an alloy flowing over a chill. The specific case chosen is that of an aluminum-4.5 % copper alloy flowing linearly over a water-cooled copper chill for which experimental results were available over a range of flow rates and superheats. For the macroscopic calculations, the SOLA-SURF algorithm for solution of the twodimensional fluid flow equations was combined with the finite difference method (FDM) for calculating heat transfer. For the microscopic calculations, heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation were considered, and the growth kinetics at the dendrite tips were evaluated. The cellular automaton (CA) technique was used to apply the microscopic kinetics to the temperature and .flow conditions."

"Abrasive wear and corrosive wear of carbon-steel grinding balls occurred simultaneously during the wet-grinding of hematite iron ore, and Ni-Cu sulphide ore, in laboratory ball mills. Two corrosion control methods, the use of corrosion inhibitors and pH control, were investigated and found to be effective means of reducing or preventing corrosive wear. Up to 50 % reduction of total ball wear resulted from the use of these methods.Corrosive wear is caused principally by the reaction of oxygen in air with the carbon-steel grinding balls, probably by the following reaction: 2Fe + O2 + 2H20 - 2Fe2 + 40H-.IntroductionA survey of corrosion problems in Canadian sulphide ore mines was completed and the findings were published in 197l(l). The corrosion survey was used to develop the present research program with the objective to find more economical and effective ways and means to reduce the corrosion that occurs in the mining and metallurgical industry. The purpose of this presentation is to review the projects being done by staff members of the Corrosion Section, Extraction Metallurgy Division, on corrosive wear and its control in wet-grind ball mills.Both abrasion and corrosion contribute to metal consumption during wet grinding of ores. The total wear of grinding media in this study is assumed to be equal to the sum of corrosive wear and abrasive wear. A great deal of research and development has been reported in the literature on ways to improve the abrasion resistance of grinding media but only a small number of studies has been reported on the corrosion resistance of conventional grinding media."

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple-entry section of the Bureau's Bruceton Experimental Mine. Four-hundred-pound Pittsburgh Seam coalbeds were ignited and allowed to burn until well-developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires, and the quantity required to extinguish the fires was compared with the quantity of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 5.8 gal to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 8.1 and 8.0 gal, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 7.4 gal. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, and the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

In the present paper, a new energy balance equation was developed, considering the slag phase, in order to define the effects of jet penetration and determine a new value for the factor K. The factor K measure the resistance to momentum transference between exit nozzle and metallic bath. The experiments were performed based on the same conditions of the article used as a comparison. The results showed the same behavior between the experiments and it was possible to determine a new value for the factor K, which changed from the unit order for the metal phase system to hundredths order for the metal and slag phase systems. These results are considered unprecedented.
